just the brightness of the camera. >> the camera was a little bright but we have a mix of sun and clouds going through. that's because we had an overnight system which is why we have our very own storm ranger. there it is sitting on san bruno mountain, getting ready for the next couple of storms. i want to show you a quick scan of that. as you can see for the most part, things have diminished significantly when it comes to the rain. current temperatures in san jose, 46 degrees. 48 in oakland. 44 in santa rosa, and overall, we are expecting to see a lovely afternoon. we're going to get a period where it sort of dries out, and then we get a good mix of sun and clouds this evening. 56 degrees in san jose. if you're headed to the 9ers game, you don't have to worry about the rain. that's always good news. i will be breaking down your 9ers day forecast coming up in a little bit to really give you an idea of what you can expect during the half-time show and all the good stuff, and talking about the king ties in about 15

minutes during my full forecast. >> that will be good, a lot of people waiting for that forecast. i'll see you in 15 minutes. thanks. it's a huge day for 49ers faithful, the team takes on the minnesota vikings for the first ever home playoff game at levi stadium. the winner of course will advance to the nfc championship game. pete suratos joins us live from levi stadium, front row seat at 7:00 a.m. we're just about, what, 6 1/2 hours from kickoff, but who's counting. >> reporter: yes. good morning to you, kira. yeah, kickoff can't come soon yuf. you mentioned the 49ers taking on the vikings at levi stadium, the first ever playoff game at levi. expect it to be a rocking house behind me when the game starts in a handful of hours. the 9ers are taking a business as usual approach. what we have heard from the players has worked so far for the team as they nabbed the number one seed in the nfc

heading into the playoffs. well, the playoffs of course are a much different beast than the regular season. a lot more at stake, guys, and for some of the players, this will be their first time in the playoffs. that will be interesting to see when the game unfolds, they've got veterans like richard sherman, a super bowl champion himself who will be sure to lead the way come game day. >> you know, at the end of the day, the game is the same. you go out there, play hard, execute. if you execute well enough, you win, if you don't, you go home. >> i'm going to play football and have fun doing it. i feel like if you change things up, that's probably not for the best, and our team has been doing that. nothing has chaenged this whole week. the intensity is up. i'm just going to go play football. >> this is the team's first playoff appearance since the hard breaking loss. a lot of 49ers fans remember that. in the 2003 nfc championship against the seattle seahawks, richard sherman played a role in

san francisco district attorney's office after only two days on the job. d.a. chesa boudin has fired seven prosecutors, one of whom had 30 years experience. he fired homicide manager swart, managing attorney linda al skpn the head of the gang unit, anna gonzalez, as well as four more trial attorneys who combined had many years of experience. some believe the firing was part of a campaign promise to reshape the da's office. ayesha lewis's mother was brutally murdered a decade ago. her killer was sentenced to 25 years to life. mike swart was the lead attorney in her mother's case. >> i'm appalled that he would even be fired because he has done such a great job, and if i'm not mistaken, he was promoted to lead the homicide division. >> boudin released a statement saying quote i had to make

difficult staffing decisions today in order to put in place a management team that will help me accomplish the work i committed to do for san francisco. boudin ran a campaign promising to end charging gang enhancements and many expected him to get rid of the gang unit. instead, he fired the head of that unit. turning now to news in the middle east, a stunning admission of human error. that's the word this morning from iran about that ukrainian passenger plane shot down earlier this week. an internal investigation said their military had been on high alert following the u.s. missile strikes. the 737 passenger plane was mistaken for a hostile target after it turned toward a sensitive military center of the revolutionary guard. this admission from iran comes after iranian officials vehemently denied claims that they mistakenly shot down the jet, and accused the united states of spreading lies. iran's president offered his

apologies and condolences on twitter, nearly 180 people died including young children. back here in the bay area, the moms must leave, a judge has ruled that two moms have no claim to the empty home in oakland they took over back in november. the judge has sided with the owners of the property, a company named wedgewood based out of ron dedondo beach. the company bought the property for half a million dollars last year. they have five days to evict the women and turn the home back over to wedgewood. one of the moms tells us she's not leaving. >> all the attention that is on oakland right now. we are not going to stop fighting. >> wedgewood says they are working with a nonprofit that hires oakland youth to renovate the home. the company says they then

trujillo has the story. >> reporter: a stolen black honda with four suspects inside. the community cameras capture them from several different directions. >> we saw them where they drove in. we saw them when they made the u-turn. >> reporter: the images are clear from 10 feet away, and they even caught and recorded the license plate of the stolen car. the community cameras are placed on strategic homes so they can catch you coming and going. >> this is a neighborhood that i would call it a neighborhood watch on steroids. >> reporter: police are still looking for the suspects who got away. it's this kind of climb that prompted the neighborhood to arm themselves with state of the art technology. >> people are tired of being burglarized and harassed and being taken advantage of, and we're fighting back. >> reporter: the neighbors work with san jose police to enhance and expedite their investigations but some worry about being recorded just for driving through. >> i want to be able to go where i want, the only people i want

detail if that rain will move out just in time for the 49ers game. well, we are less than two weeks into the new year, and governor gavin newsom already is looking at next year's budget, and he's thinking bigger. his new spending plan would be 2% larger than this year's. the governor wants a 3% boost in funding for schools and community colleges, he's proposing just one new tax, adding a couple of dollars to the cost, and he also wants to close a state prison, if that state prison's number of inmates continues to decline. governor gavin newsom also wants to add a new state park, california's first new park in seven decades. >> we have put money in this year's budget. i can't identify the park because then the price goes up. >> and finally, $12 billion is devoted to a climate budget. it will help develop smart agriculture, and lessen the impact of future floods and

droughts. now to people with sleep apnea who could see improvements by losing fat in their tongue. that's according to a new study out of the university of pennsylvania. researchers found that people with sleep apnea who lost weight also lost weight in their tongues, improving sleeping problems. 22 million americans have sleep apnea. wow. >> did not know you could lose weight in your tongue. that is a new one. i wonder if it alters your speech pattern or anything like that. >> i wonder. you learn a new thing every day on this newscast. here's vianey arana with a look at our weekend forecast. a big one for 1:35 told. it is a big one, and i know a lot of people are pretty nervous because it's cloudy, we had rain that moved through. let's get right to that forecast. here's a live look at our storm ranger. it is up and scanning on top of san bruno mountain. as you know, we had showers push through. here's a live look at that radar. notice how things have significantly climbed down on

the radar because those early morning showers, we'll get a break from that. our current temperatures, 46 degrees. 48 in palo alto. 42 in napa, and san martin. what does this mean for us, we're going to get showers pushed out for the next couple of hours or so, and then by the afternoon, we're going to get a solid mix of sun and clouds, we're going to get a break from the rain, temperatures will climb into the 50s. a high of 56 degrees in san jose. 58 in palo alto. 55 in san francisco, and in through the concord area, to the trivalley, 57 degrees. your bay area skies will remain a little cloudy, and one other thing that we're monitoring are going to be the king tides. it makes for very impressive waves, but things can also turn very dangerous. there is a high surf advisory in place, as far as what we're expecting when it comes to the high tide, the highest tide will be at 11:07 a.m., and the low tide will be at about 6:00 p.m. this is going to be one of the

highest tides we'll see today, also through tomorrow. what this means is low lying areas can become flooded, especially all around the coastline, so there is a coastal flood advisory in place. you know how they usually have those parking spots along the coastline, i'm pretty sure they might have areas blocked off as a preventive measure in case they get too high for comfort. satellite and radar, the reason i'm showing you a wide look is because even though we had the rain that moved through overnight, we have a series of storms expected to make their way in again to tomorrow and monday. i want to take you through the timing of that. your hour by hour outlook over the next couple of hours, it's looking good. we remain fairly dry, once this original round of rain moves out, and look at the timing up here. so sunday morning, we're going to be okay. far off into ukiah. we'll get a couple of showers, and around 1:00, we'll start to notice the system, north to south, in santa rosa, and it will continue its trek to the south bay, around dinner time, for san francisco, it's not a

huge rainmaker right now, but it will be enough to where you'll see the wet pavement out there. here it is, i talked about your levi stadium forecast and the big game kicks off at 1:35. you don't have to take an umbrella, but you have to take a jacket with you. at half-time, we'll be at 55 degrees. we'll get a good breeze from the west, 5 to 15 miles per hour, and as you know, the windchill is definitely a little chillier than the rest. keep the high tides through tomorrow. 10:00 a.m. to noon. by monday, this is looking like the wettest storm system becoming most widespread from early morning, from work until you get out. then looking way out ahead to wednesday night and thursday, early estimates, another round of rain expected. rain this season it in full effect. >> it sure is. thank you so much. it is 7:20 right now. still ahead on "today in the bay" one 49ers player took some time before the big game to be with someone else. it's a story that will make you bay proud, next. have you flown the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy?

welcome back, as we have been mentioning in the newscast, it's a huge day for 49ers, hosting the minnesota vikings for the first playoff game in le levi stadium. one east bay family will be cheering on one player in particular. >> we're talking about the family of 5-year-old alamo boy, zavion hamilton. for his parents, it is a tremendously difficult time made a little brighter by the support of someone who's got a few other things on his mind right now. >> there are times when a football game can seem so very important. for 49ers fans, saturday afternoon in levi stadium will be one of those times. though one 49er player clearly understands that as important as

this game is, there are things much more important. it's why last saturday, one week before his biggest game of the year, tight end levine toylolo took time away from practice room and weight room reps to come here, ucf benioff children's hospital and to the bedside of zavion hamilton. >> we wanted to go and encourage them, and take a few gifts to cheer them up and try to get their minds off of it. >> reporter: levine and his wife stephanie learned of zavion's trouble when they helped find a bone marrow donor to help him fight cancer. >> his mom jasmine, not a perfect match, ended up being the donor. >> we went for it. we needed to. he had an extremely aggressive cancer. >> zavion is struggling with complications with the transplant.

>> it's the weekend. it's the weekend. anything goes, so because it is a very important day, we're talking about the forecast first, that is not the golden gate bridge, is it, no, but it is the view of our very own storm ranger and we are going to see the rain move out, temperatures today before you head out the door, i want to show you your micro climate highs, 57 in napa, 58 in santa cruz. let's get to that forecast for the big game tonight. kickoff is at 1:35, and don't worry, you don't have to worry about the rain. clouds will linger. it will look gray. might look a little frightening. but once the clouds continue to linger, temperatures are going to drop. which means you'll definitely be needing a jacket. it's going to be a light breeze during the fourth quarter. the windchill factor will kick off. winds at 5 to 15 miles per hour. look at those temperatures. 53 degrees. depending how long this goes, it's going to get chilly at night. don't forget your coat. no rain, that is great news.

promising to end charging gang enhancements and many did expect him to get rid of the gang unit but instead he fired the head of the unit. one of the top jobs in the bay area, how to make b.a.r.t. safer, it's now up to ed alvarez who was promoted yesterday from interim police chief. his plan includes making officers more visible on trains and on station platforms. alvarez says he's heard the complaints and he wants to rebuild trust with the public. >> so starting monday, we will deploy a newly created team of 12 sworn police officers who will be dedicated to only riding trains and walking the platforms in our system. they will work in pairs and focus on working nights and weekends. >> alvarez is a 22-year veteran of the b.a.r.t. police department. our investigative unit has taken an in-depth look at crimes and odd behavior on b.a.r.t. you can watch the series at

good morning, it is 7:44 saturday morning, this is what we're waking up to, early morning showers pass through. a live look at the golden gate bridge. you can see certainly cloudy out there, but the majority of that rain will continue to make its exit out of the area. that's going to give us a break from the rain, making for much dryer conditions in through the afternoon. by the time the afternoon rolls around, we can expect to see a

change in the forecast, current temperatures in san jose, 46 degrees. 48 degrees in oakland. 50 degrees in san francisco, and what can we expect for your daytime highs. we've got our very own storm ranger, you can see the red scan right here on top of san bruno mountain, and we're certainly going to need it over the next couple of days. we've got a couple of things to get through. first, let's get to your micro climate highs. as you head out the door, we're in the low 40s in some spots, eventually we'll climb into the mid-and upper 50s. morgan hill, 57 degrees. concord, 57. martinez, 56 and along the coastline, 55 degrees for san francisco, 54 for half-moon bay. if you will be hanging out around the coastline, don't forget that we are talking about king tides. they have been pretty hide, especially since yesterday. the high tide today around 11:07. low tide around 6:00 p.m. low lying areas are prone to coastal flooding. there's a coastal flood advisory for the entire coastline in place as well as a high surf

advisory, which means we're expecting those powerful waves to continue in through today and tomorrow. just be careful if you are going to check out our beautiful coastline. just do it from a safe distance. satellite and radar right now, sure, we had a couple of showers move through. not very impactful. we're tracking another series of storms just off the coast. and that's going to impact our monday commute and also towards the end of week, so we've got rain that moves in sunday night into early monday morning, becoming more widespread and then we get a little bit of a break tuesday into wednesday, but look what happens wednesday night. wednesday night, we get another system that rolls in, beginning to move from north to south. that's going to bring rain into thursday, possibly even friday, becoming more widespread. by thursday, a look all the way from northern california even down through southern california, so the plans to travel for southern california, keep that in mind as you head out. saturday, let's watch the game here on nbc bay area, kick off at 1:35. if you're visiting from out of

>> my father was the victim of a gift card scam. >> just last week, we introduced you to lisa in oakland whose dad sent robocalling scammers $8,000. >> they hit him at his most vulnerable. >> and jenny and max in santa clara who gave the bad guys 12 grand by phone. >> i fell for it and regretted it ever since. >> before we broadcast their robocall stories to you, we shared them with representative anna in colorado. >> i'm subjected to the harassment as well. >> eshoo says washington needs to focus on our country's outdated caller id system. >> when your phone rings and something pops up on the caller id, do you trust the caller id. >> not anymore, i don't. >> caller id is easily hacked, the federal communications commission says it's working with phone companies on improvements that we'll see in

2020. herb e she says she'll push congress to step in. does the american public deserve the ability to trust caller id. >> i think if we restore it to what it was, then they will trust it. >> whose responsibility is that? >> ours. >> the public likely won't see complex back end tech improvements that the fcc wants. what we likely will see is a caller id makeover. during a recent trade show near sfo, we got the first look at a candidate, a company named first orion let us preview a new system that lets companies and government agencies display their logos when they call your phone. >> a lot of security around how that image shows up. >> plus, a message about why they're calling. first orion's craig dunn told us only official, legitimate, and verified parties get access so you can once again trust your phone's display. >> so now you can make a choice

is that a call i want to take or not. when we stop answering, maybe the bad guys will stop calling 167 million times a day. >> first orion says it's already working with several real companies that might justifiably need to call you. >> the scammers aren't waiting for legislation. >> this could be the future of caller id, so first orion doesn't call it that. >> we call it call enhancement. >> will the bad guys just hack call enhancement the same way they krucorrupted today's calle id. there's no guarantee, but it estimates there's a one in a billion chance the message on your caller enhancement screen will be bogus. >> right now we feel like we're ahead of the scammers. >> they are ramping up with t-mobile. if you're a t-mobile subscribers, you might see caller enhancement in place of caller id, and you saw it here first.

and welcome back to you, it's time for our clear the shelters segment, featuring our friends from pets in need, jacqueline stewart, and out reach coordinator vanessa are here are ivan, dubbed the chillest cat ever. and he seems to fit the bill. he rolled up in a stroller here. he's chilling on your lap. he's 10 years old. and tell me a little bit about him. >> yeah, so ivan, he was surrendered to our shelter after his owners unfortunately had to move, so he has been in a home his entire life.

he has been with kids, he's great with other cats. so he is very calm, very mellow. he just loves to hang out. >> and cuddle. >> and cuddle, as you can see. so we think he would be really great in basically any time of home. >> yeah, and he, you say he's good with kids, he's good with other cats. he's also, he fits the bill of a senior animal. and you actually have a lot of senior, well not a lot but you have a good amount of senior pets, we should say in your shelter right now. and you're kind of offering an incentive because people don't typically come in looking for a 7-year-old cat or dog or older. >> right. >> what do you want to let people know about that deal right now? >> so, we actually have a foster to adopt program, especially with some of our older cats. it might take them a little bit longer. first meet and greet might not be what you expect from your cat, and it might not be how they express themselves in the home.
