tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  January 12, 2020 7:00am-8:01am PST

7:00 am
good sunday morning. it is 7:00 on the dot. we're taking a live look outside at the shark tank. the sap center in san jose on a chilly morning. look at that. 39 degrees on our screen there. thanks for joining us. i'm kira klapper. vianey arana has a look at our microclimate forecast. and, boy, it turned out to be a beautiful day yesterday for the 49ers win. >> it was. i think it played a key role in the win. so now, though, we're experiencing very cold temperatures because that system that brought the showers yesterday morning is leaving behind, look at this in napa, 31 degrees. that is below freezing.
7:01 am
san jose 39. concord 39. santa cruz 38. and up through santa rosa, 38 right now. so the temperature difference compared to the last 24 hours is pretty significant in some parts including livermore, ten degrees colder and napa 11 and oakland 10 and down through san jose 7 degrees colder compared to the same rain shower yesterday morning. now we're still dealing with the high surf advisory through 3:00 p.m. and talk about the king tides, we are expecting the high upwards of six feet around 11:54. so if you are around the coastline, be careful there is the possibility of coastal flooding potential. i know they have certain areas probably blocked off just out of safety. and then, guess what, kira, we're tracking two more storms heading in our direction. i'll have the latest one an the rain-maker and the big one and low elevation sthoe. >> wow. okay. we'll see you in about 15 minutes.
7:02 am
vianey, thanks. we begin an investigation into what a muni train continued down the track after hitting a pedestrian. it happened before 3:00 at bay shore and sunnydale south of visitacion valley in san francisco. the persons was found dead at the scene. the driver of the train left, stopping at the muni metro at the 25th street in the dog patch. police are initiated two investigations into why the driver kept going. northbound traffic on bay shore was shut down for a couple of hours as officers canvass the streets this morning. people are on alert after a sighting of a coyote amidst homes not once but twice. marianne favro reports on what could be behind the sightings. >> reporter: four legs, ypgçq fu a tail. strolling on the sidewalk in

different reaction. >> i did decide to skip the dog walk this morning. >> reporter: marianne favro, nbc bay area news. let's go, man! one down. another one next week. >> history in the making. maybe the curse lifting at levi's. jimmy g.'s message to 49ers faithful after the blowout win 27-10 over minnesota and they are one win away from advancing to the super bowl. some 72,000 people packed into levi stadium for the first playoff game in levi stadium history. sea of red and gold. one couple we caught up with brought their four-month-old daughter. >> i grew up with steve young, jerry rice so i want her to grow up with george kittle and jimmy g. >> those who couldn't score tickets to the sold-out game gathered at watch parties across the bay area. we went to a celebrate at sp2 in

san jose and doesn't look like we have video of that. clock hadn't even run out yet before the niners fans went wild. think about 1:30 left in the game and figured out it was over. anthony flores will join us later in the newscast to have highlight and reaction from squ -- from jimmy g. and george kittle come up in 30 minutes from now. road rage or more. a sayrefying scene in the south bay on highway 101 in san jose near hellyer avenue. two cars nearly collided on the freeway and then atan sedan pulled up next to the pickup truck and started shooting. the shooter hit the truck at least six times. look at that bullet holes and that glass. a man and woman were inside of the car. the woman was hit by shattered
7:06 am
glass. she is okay. the chp said the shooting likely was road rage but they don't know for sure. they're investigating. no arrests is been made. another violent robbery in the east bay involving a laptop and this time the victim was shot. less than two weeks ago a similar situation ended with with the victim ending up dead. sergio quintana spoke with the man who helped the victim. >> it was a dime or nickel-sized wound right on his hip. >> reporter: brian lives near the scene of the laptop theft turned violent this time at an oakland bus stop and he heard the gunshot and grabbed his paramedic bag and splitted to help the man. the victim was on the phone with the 911 dispatcher describing what happened. >> someone had come up in a mask and asked for his laptop and he said he was on his laptop and somebody asked for it and i
7:07 am
think he said he refused and the guy shot him. >> reporter: the 21-year-old victim is expected to be okay. this laptop robbery at gunpoint comes more than a week since oakland resident shuo zeng was killed when robbers stole his laptop in the montclair neighborhood. zeng was killed when he chased after the alleged robbers and was hit by the getaway car. two men have been arrested in that case. dan kalb wants to see more police on the streets to stop violent street crime. >> we have a vacancy rate twice as much as what it should be at opd and the only way to fill vacancies is more police academies so i'm -- i'm pushing to have for officers. >> reporter: there have been several shootings and a stabbing here recently. many don't stay out late and wonder what would happen if someone tried to steal there there him. >> you hate to think your
7:08 am
reaction is not to think at the time and grab it or refuse to give it up and in that moment, that might cost you your life. >> reporter: in oakland, sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. and new details concerning the would moms who have been ordered to leave that vacant oakland house that they took over. the property owners want to help the women get temporary housing. a squ-- a judge ruled on any ane told you about this yesterday morning, the two moms have no claim to the house they took back over in november. the alameda county sheriff has five days to evict the women and turn it back over to the owners, a company called wedgewood out of los angeles. yesterday wedgewood offered to pay the cost of housing the mother and families at a shelter for the them. two months. one of the mothers said in a statement they said we want to buy this home through oakland community land trust but wedgewood would rather see our kids in shelters or worse.
7:09 am
their offer is an insult, end quote. the owners want the mom to leave peacefully and voluntarily. >> we're doing this because the company recognizes what the women are saying even though it disagree with their methods which is to break in and forcibly take this home. we still fael -- feel for them and respect them and want to help them transition to a safe place. >> the women maintain they have no intention of leaving voluntarily. it is 7:90. much more ahead. live to washington to talk with with chuck todd and get a preview of this week's "meet the press." and plus information that could help save lives. the battle between lawmakers and ride share companies to keep customers safe. >> announcer: time and temperature on nbc bay area is sponsored by mancini's sleep

7:13 am
some international diplomacy here to try to keep the allies on the same talking points, if you will. they were struggling to do that. struggling to explain. but i think some of the criticism is mitigated because of iran's own behavior. first lying about downing the passenger jet and then fessing up to it sparking internal domestic protests and it bought the president some space both internationally to work on public diplomacy and domestically to try to repair some time with congress here, with some trust. i don't know if the trust between the congress and the executive branch will be any time soon but what is happening in iran right now does take a little bit of the political pressure off the trump administration. >> absolutely. with the iranians protesting and calling for the leader to step down. >> chuck, senator susan collins reported she's meeting with a fairly small group of republican senators who assure that new witnesses will be allowed to speak at president trump's
7:14 am
impeachment trial. what does this say about mcconnell's claim that he has the votes to move forward without fresh testimony? >> well, he's been very careful what he said. he said he had the votes to get going. to get this without a guarantee of witnesses. i think one thing, larry, that i remind people of is that -- and i ask this question and i'll ask it rhetorically, what is mitch mcconnell's priority? the president's politics or the senate majority politics? i promise you worried about the senate majority more than anything. so the fact of the matter is it strikes me as pretty smart politics by susan collins, martha mcsally, cory gardner, the vulnerable republican incumbents, i do expect them to all vote together. all of those vulnerable republicans that would like to have more witnesses, i think that is my guess is that that group, whether it is three, six, seven, maybe max, that they vote as a block. and if they did that and they wanted witnesses, well it owe
7:15 am
guarantee we would see witnesses that's for sure. >> moving on. new presidential polls in south carolina and nevada show spikes por tom steyer allowing him to participate in the next tuesday democratic debate. with him spending more money in the two states than all combined, is money now replacing the traditional retail campaign forum we've used in the early states? >> larry, i would buy into the premise if steyer were making a move in iowa and new hampshire. he's spending the same -- a gagillion dollars in those two states too and it hasn't had the same impact. let's be realistic. if you are the only person advertising in a state, you could garner some name i.d. and essentially he's the only person focusing on nevada and south carolina television airwaves to a thorough extent. that is not the case in iowa and new hampshire. so i'm a little hesitant to assume much other than that is what money matters when no one
7:16 am
else is advertising and the rest of the campaign shows up i expect the steyer number to fade but we'll see. the good news for him is he got his way into the debate. and that is -- that's what matters most for him. does he make the most of it. i'll be honest, i'm skeptical those numbers are nothing but sort of a bit inflated because he's the only one running tv ads in either state. >> a gagillion dollars. how many zeros is that. >> i don't know any more. so and so is spending $76 million. i remember when $76 million, this is in 2000, was the combined ad budget for both candidates for president in the nomination. so these numbers are sort of no longer real sometimes. >> astronomical. >> off the charts. >> chuck todd, thank you so much. and before you go, good luck to you and your green bay packers
7:17 am
today. >> well, i appreciate that. go, pack, do. >> thank you. be sure to join chuck for this morning's "meet the press" with an interview with national security adviser robert o'brien and exclusive interviewed with rand paul and michael bennet. tune into "meet the press" after this newscast at 8:00 a.m. just stay right here. and larry will be back in 40 minutes for our weekly chat and look at a record amount of campaign funding for the 2020 presidential election. did we know we were talking about that with chuck? two candidates who may be changing the paradigm. larry, we'll see you in a few. >> got it. turning to other news. a fight over crash data that could save lives. a state lawmaker is demanding that the california public utilities commission make public annual crash data reports from uber and lyft. for years state regulators have hidden the data even though they're not legally obligated do so. lorena gonzalez is promising to

have every tool available to force the release of that information. the cpuc has yet to respond to allegations that it is hiding information because of industry hobbying. wow, turning to vianey arana with a look at our sunday forecast. we had a little bit of rain yesterday. a lot of sunshine in the end. >> kwa. -- yeah it moved out but that is leaving behind the cold morning lows. if you are heading out soon, i'll bring you through the timeline. because we are dry for the first part of the morning and still the instability. but the view of san jose. look at skies. you could see cloud cover there. and also look at how beautiful this view of the golden gate bridge is. it looked like it may be blown out in terms of lighting. but it is 49 degrees in san francisco. meanwhile right now in the 30s in other parts of the bay briba cold 31. santa rosa 38. and in through oakland also in the 30s.
7:19 am
so what are we seeing in terms of the temperature change? if you notice up through napa, this is a 24-hour temperature change meaning they're running 11 degrees colder compared to the same time yesterday. concord 9 degrees colder. and our microclimate highs for today, a little bit of instability still left. so for the first half of the morning we'll get a mix of sun and clouds again and by the evening because of instability there is a chance we'll catch a couple of isolated showers but not a big rain-maker and not everybody will see the light rain. temperatures range in the 50s. but still dealing with the high surf advisory in place through 3:00 p.m. king tides, we've been talking about that all weekend, the high tide over 6 feet at about 11:54 this morning around the coastline. so the highlighted purple line, means the waves will be dangerous. it could be impressive to watch, but watch from a safe distance. we have the storm ranger up and
7:20 am
scanning. you could see radar is pretty quiet. but we'll keep our doppler radar working because we're tracking two additional storms. so let's talk about the hour-by-hour outlook. 30s right now. and looking at 8:30, i talked about the instability bringing a chance of isolated showersm here they have, san rafael and san francisco. not everybody is going to see it. it is a bit disorganized meaning sh areas will be driving down the highway and then noticing rain. our chance of more rain. monday night into tuesday morning, more rain is possible with low rain totals about less than a tenth of an inch, maybe a quarter in the mountain areas and fast forwarding ahead into wednesday, this is the biggest rain-maker right now. from a half an inch to an inch and a half and also a cold storm which means we could see snow near the lower elevations at about 3500 feet. wednesday night into thursday
7:21 am
morning. it is very windy. so widespread rain expected on thursday. we begin to calm down heading into friday morning but by from night into early saturday morning we get more rain. but don't worry, we'll get clear skies in time for the niners game in time for sunday according to the rain models now. so monday night into tuesday morning, light storms and wednesday night into thursday more widespread is our big rain-maker this week. kira. >> hank you. it is 7:21. coming up, if you bought or received a smart tv over the holidays, chances are it knows more about you than you might know. and it is sharing that information. coming up, with we show you some simple steps to outsmart your smart tv.

7:24 am
price. this next report will show you what your smart tv knows about you and how you can stop it from sharing that information. nbc's vicky nguyen shows us how to keep your tv from being so smart. >> reporter: there are big ticket item for millions of people and nearly every tv sold these days is a smart tv meaning you could stream from netflix and youtube and hula and disney plus and you might plug in an amazon fire stick, roku or google chrome cast. but they are grabbing a lot of information about you. what streaming services you use and what shows you watch and when you are watching and how long. even if you do something like this -- >> play "star wars." >> the smart devices use that information for a range of reasons including analytics, marketing and targeted advertising. they could share that data with countless third-party firms. >> they are monitoring what you
7:25 am
do. they're monitoring what you watch. >> reporter: consumer reports director of products maria said your smart tv is basically a computer. >> these are connected and collecting and sending data and that is a lot different than how you think of a tv. >> reporter: she said many smart tvs use what is called acr or automatic content recognition. >> that is the technology that the tvs use to identify what you're watching. >> do you think most people are aware that this much information is being collected about them? >> no. i don't think people are are aware of and people are aware they could do something about it. >> reporter: so what can you do? maria shows me the steps on a samsung. >> on this tv we go down to settings. we then have to go down to support. go over to terms and policy, we want to go to viewing information services and there is this i agree. we're going to uncheck that --
7:26 am
>> and what does that do? >> it will are have it stop monitoring what you're watching. >> reporter: next look for interest-based advertisements service privacy notice. yeah, it is a mouthful. >> and also turn off the ability to get targeted ads. >> reporter: so this is not that easy for a normal user. >> right. >> reporter: others like resc--e roku is different. go to settings, advertising and limit ad checking it and then smart experience we want to uncheck. and amazon fire tv, go to settings, references, privacy settings and device usage data. >> so we would like to turn that off. >> reporter: finally disable collect app and over the air usage and interest-based ads. so good tips to help you outsmart your smart tv. >> wow, that was vicky nguyen

coming up this tuesday. still, almost all of the campaign has come from his own pockets. >> how much money are we talking? gazillions according to chuck todd. >> gazillions. more zeros than i'll ever know for darn sure. a record number. it is crazy. steyer already committed more than $100 million, already. with significant amounts going to the early caucus and primary states. bloomberg has past the $200 million amount with with most of his money going to states after the first four nomination contests and emphasizing the super-tuesday days on march 3rd. and california is one of the states with the largest number of delegates at stake. >> for the first time. and you mentioned that we might not know fully the results until july of how this money is panning out. but what do we see so far? >> well, the latest poll shows something interesting. they show some success for

steyer. a poll of south carolina democrats released last week showed a surge for steyer. all the way up to a tie for second. i think from a distant 4% just a few months ago. similarly a poll of nevada democrats released last week showed a jump for steyer to 12% from 5%. so there are important takeaways with the change going on with big money. first south carolina and nevada are are the third and fourth states in the democratic nomination process. significant because like iowa and new hampshire before them, they potentially play huge roles this setting the tone for the rest of the nomination process. and second, steyer spent $22 million in south carolina and nevada alone. more money than all of the other democratic candidates combined. so you could see how he is just laser focused and, boom, there goes his popularity. >> and people don't really know him. he's from california. we know him and now he's being

introduced to the rest of the country. and what about michael bloomberg, depending who you ask it doesn't seem like he's getting as much bang for his buck. >> you see him a lot on tv. every other commercial is bloomberg because he's employing a national campaign strategy focusing on the states after the first four events. even though he entered the race seven weeks ago he's averaging 6% and as high as 11% nationally in one poll. and this could ome be the beginning. if we consider the $100 million bloomberg spent to win the third term as mayor in thrk. $100 million for new york. you add that up nationally. that could amount to $6 billion. if you spent proportionately the same thing, $6 billion. which is about twice the cost of all campaign costs of donald trump and democratic hillary clinton campaign in 2016.
7:51 am
the dollars as we talked about with chuck are just beyond belief. >> astronomical. so do you think the self funded campaigns will become the new standard for winning elections or being in an election? >> you know, here is where it gets more interesting than we might think about money. historically self-funded campaigns have done miserably in most major races. in 1996 independent candidate ross perot spent $65 million of his own money on his campaign and came in a poor third. that was a lot of money in 1996. steve forbes spent $80 million in 1996 and 2000 and didn't even win the republican nomination and in the 2010 governor race in california, this is sobering things up, republican meg whitman spent $150 million of her own money. only to lose to jerry brown's $26 million campaign. so you know we talk about money and running things and what not,

but from the examples we could see massive spending may garner name recognition, it doesn't necessarily translate to votes. so whether the massive spending in 2020 will turn out differently, well you could see both sides of this argument that may not be as powerful at the end as it has been currently. >> always interesting. larry, thanks so much. we'll be back in a moment with vianey's final look at weather.
