>> soggy in some spots. light rain moving through the north bay but the rest of the bay area we're starting out with low clouds. here is a look at walnut creek this morning. you may have some of the sprinkles on the windshield as you drive to work this morning. and we'll also see temperatures in the low 40s heading into the mid-50s by early this afternoon. looking at all of our high temperatures around the bay area, we have some mid to upper 50s today. a little bit warmer than yesterday and i'll talk about some rain coming in tomorrow. as we head out on the roads this morning, here is a live look at bay bridge. smooth flow of traffic and so far we haven't had any big issues. i hope it stays that way. as we are looking at a lot of green for the drive which means that everyone is flowing at speed. we'll talk more about what is is a head in weather and traffic coming up again in a few minutes. >> sounds good. thanks, kari. we're celebrating. 49ers are nfc champs and off to the first super bowl in seven years after dominating green bay

gold rush of sorts for merchandise. >> reporter: yeah, definitely. i saw a lot of merchandiseme, right before the game, i was at the grocery store and everybody was wearing 49ers gear and now they have to get new gear because it has to say championship, road to the super bowl. after the game was over, folks started buying merchandise. milpitas dick's stayed open late and will open at 7:00 so fans could get their new merchandise before heading off to work and school. fans are ready to support the niners as they head to the super bowl in two weeks in miami. >> look, nfc champions are here. yeah! >> the nfc championship. i got one for myself and one for my parents. >> reporter: merchandise is flying off the shelves. american airlines is announcing it is adding flights to miami

ahead of the super bowl. particularly out of san jose and sfo. southwest airlines also announcing that they're adding flights into fort lauderdale which is 30 minutes from miami. now according to seatgeek.com this is on track to be the prize -- the priciest yet. the three most expensive were the patriots super bowls ranging from $4,500 to $4,500 and in 2016 when levi's stadium hosted super bowl 50, tickets then were about $4,400. so these tickets look very much more expensive. now jimmy g. was on fire against the packers last night. but this is what happened the last time the niners played the chiefs. remember it? when jimmy g. store his acl. would we'll forget that happened. patrick mahomes was on fire last night so it will be a very exciting game. if i do say so.

washington. >> and be sure to stay with nbc news as the impeachment trial kicks off tomorrow. there are several special reports planned throughout the day. the deadly and fiery crash of a tesla in the tri-valley has some people living nearby calling for more safety measures. it happened on saturday in pleasanton on hacienda near las positas boulevard. the car burst into flames after striking a concrete sign outside of a condo complex trapping the driver inside. the crash is till being investigated but neighbors say drivers speed through the area. >> there is no protection over here for us. had this wall not been there, it would have been hit directly. >> it is scary for sure and something we want to do is get a barricade here or something. >> reporter: the driver has not been identified. 6:07 now. happening today. across the nation thousands will honor dr. martin luther king jr.'s, legacy. king is regarded for champing

dr. king departs from the diridon cal train station in san jose at 9:30 this morning and will stop in palo alto, san mateo and finally san francisco and that is free. and i'm also hosting an annual dr. king event in san jose today. it is a luncheon. and i'm told, kari, it is sold out. >> oh, man. >> i tried to get you tickets. >> it is so popular. >> it is. >> that is nice. it is a great celebration. >> it is great. and we're going to see as we head out this morning, a couple of spotty light showers but nothing that should really cancel plans to head out. we're seeing some of the showers moving through. parts of the north bay, it is hit or miss. also very light and just enough in the north bay along the coast had a could make those roads wet for you. but as we look at the rest of the bay area, we're going to see the showers along the coast and then some more widespread rain heading in by tomorrow, especially during the morning. first starting in the north bay and here we are at this time tomorrow seeing the rain moving

through santa rosa. off-and-on showers and those fall apart before it makes it into the rest of the bay area. but going into the afternoon, we could see areas south of the golden gate bridge getting some rain. i'll be tracking that as you head out on the roads this morning. let's get a look at your morning commute as we look at our overall view of the bay area map. and we haven't seen any major issues. it is been a pretty good drive for you. our south bay drive times on northbound 101 from 85 over toward mountain view it will take about 19 minutes. and then northbound 280 on highway 101 towards highway 85 takes about seven minutes. i haven't seen any back-ups yet. let's hope it stays this way. i'll have an update again in about three minutes. >> we'll check back. thanks. 6:10 right now. >> still ahead on "today in the bay," the time is up for several house boat docks at the redwood city marina. those floating homes will be demolished to make way for new homes. >> and a new study said parns don't worry the cell stuff.

well as the inland valley toward the tri-valley. 41 degrees in martinez. we'll see a lot of clouds and temperatures making it into the mid-50s for an afternoon high. now as we head out on the roads this morning, here is a live look in oakland. we're still seeing a big build. even for a holiday. but at least there is no slowdowns. you have a smooth commute. we'll look at the rest of the bay area this weather and traffic in about five minutes. and good morning. very happy monday to you. markets are closed for dr. king's birthday. if they were open, they're not. but if they were, they would open at new records so we'll see that tomorrow. intel reports profits later this week. watch this one. i think it is a company with some news. we'll keep an eye on tesla after the deadly fire we've been telling you about. did you see this over the weekend? spacex rehearsed an aboard long after launch as the rocket was supersonic, you could barely see the dot of the capsule launching away from the main rocket.

getting it self-to safety and then the rocket itself blows up. now this is intentional. that was the last major test. spacex had to perform before taking real astronauts to space. "the mercury news" said elizabeth holmes is having trouble paying lawyers and maybe out of money as she battles federal prosecutors in court. holmes had a business partner and both accused of fraud promoting their blood machine edison as something that could detect hundreds of diseases. and parents a new study out of the journal of child psychology said smartphones are not something you need to worry about. not compared to all of the other things you have to worry about when it comes to raising kids. the study by two researchers from uc irvine and the university of north carolina took a critical look at the studies that claimed a link between anti-social behavior, depression, and cell phones and came up with no causal link. the researchers said, yeah, it would be better if kids were

outside playing instead of on snapchat but it is not something they say they need to worry about, our parents need to worry about too much. i've posted that study to twitter so you could read it yourself. >> thank you very much. a comeback for payless shoes after all remaining stores were closed last summer due to bankruptcy. the company is expected to unveil the 2020 strategy soon. payless continues to sell some shoes on amazon but now the company is planning to launch its own online store and reopen some brick and mortar shops as well. >> remember that bo-go campaign. and shoes and clothes and accessories designed by beyonce relaunching her plan with adidas trying to attract more female customers. she launched in 2016 with top shop but it was pulled after sexual harassment claims were filed against the company owner. and we can't get enough of the 49ers. george kiting turns heads and

got chuckles answering questions after the gape. he was wearing a shirt that had a picture of a shirtless jimmy g. if that wasn't enough, garoppolo autographed the shirt and wrote "to george" on it. clearly a team having a lot of fun together. >> that is fun. >> playful fun there. >> watch that be a thing now. everybody wants the jimmy g. shirtless shirt. >> there you go. 6:17 this morning. we're talking about that weather right now. the weather is starting out a little cool and soggy for parts of the bay area. some light rain moving through. we'll be tracking that as we go throughout the morning with more rain in the forecast for tomorrow. a live look in palo alto. we're seeing some drive conditions here. temperatures starting out in the mid-40s. there will be a lot of clouds today. but it will actually be slightly warmer compared to yesterday. and we're seeing that rain across parts of the north bay right now. here is the closest look as

we've seen the rain in northern marin county and covering sonoma county and light rain around healdsburgs and off and on in santa rosa. so this will continue to stay along the coastline today. and fizzle out as it moves inland. and the next storm system, you could see the swirl of the clouds there, that is the sense of low pressure coming in along with a cold front for tomorrow. and we'll start to see the rain at 5:00 to 6:00 in the morning mostly in the north bay and then it starts to make its way into the rest of the bay area during the afternoon. but it does break apart and becomes a very scattered and staying very light. so for areas south of san francisco, you're not going to measure a whole lot of rain. it will mainly be in north bay where we see at least a tenth of an inch up to close of half an inch near ukiah and trace ams elsewhere. for the sierra, we're going to see light snow coming down around lake tahoe. from about one up to five inches of snow at kingvale and then the

seven-day forecast dries out. our inland areas reach into the low 60s and a nice weekend especially toward friday reaching 63 degrees. unfortunately there is more rain coming back and it is just in time for the weekend. we'll see the off-and-on showers on both saturday into sunday. so i'll have more updates on that. let's head out to the morning commute across the golden gate bridge we're seeing a light flow of traffic on this holiday and no fog at the golden gate bridge but i'm seeing one issue in san francisco on highway 101. now this is near vermont road and 101 southbound. this is not going in the commute direction. we have seen a hazard on the road, possibly a car that may be a little bit disabled, disabled on the side of the road and blocking one of the lanes. our south bay drive times are looking good. a lot of green here meaning that the cars are flowing near the speed limit so that is some good

new this morning, a horrific scene in hawaii. a man shot and killed two police officers in honolulu before starting a fire. it happened yesterday when police were responding to a call at a stabbing when a man opened fire and started shooting. two officers hit by gunfire. the shooters then allegedly set the home on fire. investigators believe he died in the flames but he and two women remain unaccounted for. officials say they are continuing to actively search for the shooter just as a precaution. honolulu mayor said the city is in mourning. >> officers put on their uniform

this morning and didn't get home. >> this morning we're learning about the officers. one is a seven-year veteran of the force and the other a nine-year veteran. happening today. live this morning to richard, virginia, bracing for possible violence as thousands are expected for a progun rally including white nationalist and militia groups. these are live pictures of the crowd now gathering. a lot of people out there. this is coming as state legislators consider new gun control bills such as a limit on handgun purchases and required background checks. the governor declared a state of emergency banning torches, firearms and weapons at the event hoping to avoid a repeat of the 2017 deadly charlottesville rally. protesters are renewing the call for a southern california race track to close. this is after deaths of three more horses. those three horses died between friday and yesterday at santa anita outside of los angeles.

dozens of protesters calling for a ban on horse racing there yesterday. a little more than a year, 42 horses have died at santa anita and the park said they are committed to safety and transparency and will launch reforms before the recent racing season. 6:25 now. the zoo is celebrating a new addition. and perhaps a little mist in their eyes over this one. >> for the first time in over two decades a gorilla gave birth over the weekend at l.a. zoo. both are doing well and beyonding behind the scenes. no word on an official name for the little one. the zoo said the public will be able to see the baby gorilla for the first time in the coming days. >> that maternal instinct is amazing. >> shocking to see that. it is 6:25 now. coming up next on "today in the bay," shooting at a popular moraga shopping center injures two people. normally quiet there. the shooting suspect also injured. we'll have a live report coming

the field and bring you the very latest as the team gears up for the super bowl. all you need to do is head over to nbcbayarea.com and make sure you download our free nbc bay area mobile app. it is 6:34 now. police overnight revealed more about the shooting at a moraga shopping center that injured two innocent people. pete suratos joining us live in moraga with new details about the victims and the suspected gunman. pete? >> reporter: good morning to you. the information from moraga police is the suspect may have dated one of the victims so possible a domestic violence case but the scene is clear here in moraga. much different scene overnight as we show our viewers some of the video. now moraga police said they got a call around 7:30 p.m. about a shooting in this parking lot where we're standing. now when police arrived they found two shooting victims inside of a van. excuse me. moraga police are identifying

the shooting suspect as 21-year-old isaiah glaze of sacramento. they were able to arrest him north of the scene. thanks to the information they got from the victims. now here is a more police chief explaining what they know so far but ho the shooting unfolded. >> so there is a car, the suspect was driving a car, he stopped directly behind the victims' vehicle and the victims had a silver van right here behind us and blocked the car in and he got out of his car and went to the driver's window and fired two shots into the van. >> reporter: now police say when they found the suspect he was suffering from a gunshot wound which was self-inflicted. the victims were taken to the hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries but police are not looking for any more suspects at this time. reporting live, pete suratos, for "today in the bay." >> pete, thank you.

6:36 now. in oakland, crews are expected to continue to build tiny homes to fight the homelessness epidemic. over the weekend volunteers built three and are in the middle of building six more. many are wondering how long they will stay up. well the construction in oakland, san antonio neighborhood is the fourth attempt by the housing advocacy group the villeth to create a community for the oakland homelessness population. the three other attempts were bulldozed by the city and the projects did not need permits. on the peninsula, house boat battle is expected to come in to a head today in redwood city to make way for 130 new homes. as early as today, the city is expected to bring down eight remaining two-story floating homes at this docktown marina. the area is under development. three weeks ago the city removed morehouse boats it bought from owners last year. city officials say they worked hard to help the house boat

owners relocate. taking a look at the weekend weather. before we get there, we have to get through four more days. >> we do have rain coming our way but then also having a nice end to the week. an i think by friday that is our best chance to get outside because we will see some more showers coming in, especially on saturday and some more widespread rain on sunday. if you're going to be out in san francisco this weekend, get out there on friday. we want to once again track more wet weather in time for the weekend and as we make plans going hiking, friday is the day. 59 degrees will be the high temperature and then some off-and-on showers. we'll see that rain for both days of the weekend. and if you're going to be in the tri-valley, we're up to 64 degrees. a nice, warm day to start out. but then we'll see some cooler air as that rain arrives and we'll see waves of it coming through. if you're planning to do to yosemite this weekend, expect some nice, clear conditions getting there on friday. but then coming back, that is

when we'll have some of the rain changing over to snow. and so you may have a tough drive coming back to the bay area. let's get out there on the roads this morning with a look at that morning commute. overall the traffic maps have been pretty good. pretty quiet and that means we haven't had any major incidents on the roads. our east bay drive times on westbound 80 from highway 4 to the bay bridge takes about 15 minutes and 15 minutes toward the bay bridge and northbound 880 to the bay bridge takes about 13 minutes. tri-valley drive times are also all green. everyone is flowing at least at the speed limit. we'll talk about what is going on as far as today's temperature trend coming up in three minutes. >> we'll look forward to it, thanks. 6:39 now. coming up on "today in the bay," chaos at l.a.x. people ducking for cover and trying to run out of the terminal after someone warned about a man with a gun. up next we'll tell you what really happened. plus the president expected to respond to his impeachment

cloudy sky throughout today. and temperatures slightly warmer reaching into the mid-50s for an afternoon high. as you head out on the roads this morning, here is a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. we've had such a light traffic and no metering lights on great news as you head out of the door and we'll talk about weather and traffic again in about five minutes. >> we'll check back with you. 6:43 right now. and new overnight, a suspicious fire at an apartment complex. it all happened about 1:30 this morning along campus drive not far from summit shasta charter school. the flames were centered in a common area and only caused minor damage. a homeless man in southern california will likely have some time to think about the panic authorities say he caused yesterday at an l.a.x. >> we want to show you video of the terrified ticket agents and travelers ducking for cover. investigators say that that suspect yelled that he saw someone with a gun inside of

hell of a deal. love and appreciate you all. this is great. turn the music on and get -- >> you heard it right there. this is not the trophy the niners are looking for. and hopefully two weeks from now, they're hoisting the lombardi trophy up in the air as super bowl champions. >> that is how we are after "today in the bay." a good one. >> where is sour trophy. >> a cup of coffee. >> yeah. so maybe you're grabbing some coffee, about to head out of the door for work or heading to some of the martin luther king celebrations today. we're going to start out with wet weather across parts of bay area. that is a look at the golden gate bridge. no fog here. but we have seen some low clouds rolling by. here is a look at our high temperatures for today. it will be slightly warmer than yesterday and some peeks of sunshine but looking at the radar, we are seeing some light green here indicating some light rain. now as we get a closer look athe north bay, a lot of this is in parts of the north bay along the

coast from bodega bay and up toward healdsburg. right now it is dry in santa rosa but we've seen the rain off and on. also getting spotty sprinkles up and down the peninsula and now into the south bay. as we're seeing light rain extending over san jose toward the hills. so this is going to start out with soggy weather for the morning. we'll take a break and then we'll watch this next storm system coming in that will bring us some rain for tomorrow morning. so here is how it shapes up as we go hour-by-hour. we're seeing mostly cloudy skies today. here we are, 6:30 tomorrow morning and rain moving through the north bay. through that morning commute, a lot of rain stays in the north bay. but then as it moves into the rest of the bay area for the afternoon, the rain becomes more scattered and it does stay light. a rainfall total will also be fairly light for areas south of san francisco. we're looking at a tenth of an inch of rain or less. maybe up to about a quarter inch of rain from san anselmo to santa rosa and more to ukiah.

and then through the rest of the week, we're drying out and warming up. it is going to be a great week. looking at some low 60s by friday. and then the weekend, we'll see more showers coming up. low 50s to high 60s for temperatures and then in san francisco upper 50s with rain again this weekend. as you head out on the roads this morning, heads up as you get a look at san mateo bridge. flowing smoothly but i have seen a report of a vehicle that may be disabled blocking one lane and then a live look outside in oakland, a light flow of traffic as you start out on this monday morning. it you do have to work today, it is one where you could leave later, hang out a little bit longer with with us. we're going to also keep an eye on what is happening on the san mateo bridge going into the commute direction, that disabled vehicle not causing a big back-up but may slow you down for a couple of minutes there. looking from our south bay drive times, northbound 101 from 85 to mountain view. we're at about 19 minutes.

housing site not far from the county's juvenile justice center. and in oakland, in honor of dr. martin luther king jr. day, the anti-police terror is leading the march for the sixth year in a row and this year demands include housing as a human right, closing the immigration camps at the border and putting a stop to oakland school closures. across the nation, thousands will honor dr. jr.'s life and legacy through organized boycotts and rallies and encouraging nonviolent protests and he led the 1963 march on washington where he delivered the uplifting i have a dream speech from the steps of the lincoln memorial. and hundreds of events are happening today. and an interfaith vigil will be held in austin, texas, where they had hold a march and festival and food drive.
