this is the democrats' last day with control of the senate floor. they will shift their argument today, arguing that president trump obstructed congress by stonewalling their impeachment investigation. the democrats' top prosecutor, adam schiff, last night, in emotional comments, saying truth matters, otherwise, we are lost. as president trump returned to the white house overnight, top democrat adam schiff delivering impassioned remarks, urging his removal from office, saying the president compromised america's national security. >> and you know you can't trust this president do what's right for this country. you can trust he will do what's right for donald trump this is why if you find him guilty you must find that he should be removed. right matters >> reporter: schiff hammering

7:13 am
they decide how they use it. sources familiar with the plans say it is likely they will not use all of that time, putting the bulk of their argument on monday, perhaps tuesday, when more people are watching they're not expected to contest the facts. not expected to do a point by point rebuttal it is more likely what they do is to try to cast this entire democratic case as illegitimate. craig? >> peter, stand by a moment. i want to bring in kasie hunt. kasie is inside the capitol for us this morning. you have been in that chamber. to peter's point there, in the long term, of course, these house managers trying to convince senators to remove president trump. in the short term, trying to convince the moderate republicans to hear witnesses. does it seem as if house managers are swaying any of these moderate republicans >> reporter: you heard peter say in his piece, craig, that the senators -- that adam schiff said it was clear the chamber was listening. that's what i saw yesterday while i was in the senate chamber.
7:14 am
i think especially during those closing arguments, it was clear that schiff had the attention of the senators there have been some flares among republicans. yesterday, susan collins, the republican from maine, sent a note to the chief justice s, anr nadler had accused senators of participating in a coverup, leading to the rebuke from the chief justice sis. we' we are watching that carefully if there are enough republicans to call witnesses in the trial, our reporting says, and sources i'm talking to say that it could be republicans who have been in the senate for many years. perhaps some who are not running for re-election coming up, who are retiring they could turn the tide if republicans are ultimately going to decide, you know what, we're convinced we really need to hear more so far, of course, they're holding their cards close to the vest while they wait for the white house to defend themselves craig? >> kasie hunt inside the capitol.
