ukraine even though, even though that accusations has been long debunked by government authorities of the united states and ukraine. now the democrats further claim that democrat -- that president trump blocked their efforts to investigate the president by denying access to records, documents and administration witnesses. so they made by all accounts a very compelling case. >> yeah, and yesterday we were preempted because the president's team began their arguments against the impeachment charges which will be described more in depth in more detail beginning tomorrow. what do you think we could glean from those opening statements. they only lasted about two hours. >> that is right. they didn't talk long. but they talked pretty powerfully if you look back at it. the president's team, if you will, argued there is no there-there. they submit that the democrats have offered what would amount to be a smoke and mirrors prosecution with half truths and hearsay from witnesses.

beginning from the much discussed july 25th phone call and ending with democratic witnesses who were interviewed as well as those not interviewed. the's te-- the president's team are coming back strong. >> and getting to what we had kind of teased leading into this conversation, what do we know about the public interest? you could argue this is a historic moment but a lot of people don't seem to care. >> to us wonks out there, it is kind of surprising. it shouldn't be but it is. the public just doesn't appear to be very engaged. at least so far. about 11 million viewers tuned into the hearings during the first two days and dropped by the way to less than 9 million the third day. now these numbers pale compared to other serious national events as you could see from the chart. imagine that twice as many people watching the kavanaugh

hearings rather than impeachment or 50% more watching michael cohen's testimony. so whatever the merits of democratic claims, the public has just not been engaged. now maybe that some people have watched other times and other media but that possibility could apply to the other recent example as well. so simply put, there is no groundswell of interest and that could not be reassuring to house democrats who were hoping for a surge of public outrage sufficient enough to pressure republican senators to vote for conviction at least for witnesses. >> it is almost like the -- the kavanaugh/comey/cohen viewership led people to what they feel now. >> maybe. >> how do you think thissin attentiveness played plea tor the request for witness and evidence to be included in the impeachment hearing.

>> it doesn't help. not if you're the democrats. from the beginning, republican majority leader mitch mcconnell has said that he wanted the trial to be completed as quickly as possible. the lack of public interest, all that is going to do is decrease the likelihood of enough senate republicans to join with the democrats to vote for witnesses. after all, why should republicans vote for witnesses if there is so little interest in the entire impeachment event altogether. >> that is a great point. at the end of the day, do you think that the democrats will make themselves look like fools over their efforts to have the president impeached or removed at this point. >> this is crystal ball time. and only the future is really going to confirm or reject whether democrats have hurt chances for upcoming elections. but look, it is important to remember that a lack of public interest doesn't necessarily mean that the democrats were wrong to pursue impeachment and it is likely that many democrats will view the past week's impeachment trial as a

stepping-stone to the november 2020 argument against the president. they'll argue even though the president wasn't convicted he has behaved terribly and hurt the nation. but you have to say one thing, mitch mcconnell, boy, he's something in organizing these guys. >> oh, absolutely. and what do you think speaking about the republicans, assuming a favorable impeachment trial outcome, will they likely benefit from that? >> in the short-term, yes. and large -- thanks largely to mitch mcconnell. look, after the trial, republicans will point to a robust economy and no arguing about that. it it is a robust economy and suggest that the re-election of the president is the best opportunity to keep that economy going. democrats are going to renew the focus on issues such as health care and immigration reform and economics assessment for the those at the top and suffering for those at the middle and the bottom. those things have been cast aside. but in some ways november is a long way away from now and by that comes along, impeachment

america's getting sicker. there are one million more uninsured americans every year under trump. and he's repeatedly tried to repeal obamacare. mike bloomberg will make sure everyone without health coverage can get it, and everyone who likes theirs, keep it. while capping fees to lower costs. as mayor, he helped expand coverage to seven hundred thousand more people. and championed women's reproductive health. as president, he'll give access to everyone. i'm mike bloomberg and i approve this message.

hanging out around emeryville and san mateo and down to near mountain view seeing a few of the showers. a look at san jose, the sun coming out after the rain has poved off to the east. starting off with mild temperatures, mid to upper 50s. right now 57 at oakland and 55 in san jose. and for the afternoon as the skies slowly clear, should see temperatures in the low 60s around the south bay, upper 50s closer to san francisco and oakland and half moon bay and low 60s near santa rosa and napa by the afternoon. now as you saw on the city cameras, especially for emeryville looking off to the west, we have a few scattered showers around sfo and a few more on the north side of san jose ands it is the central bay and south bay over the next three to four hours that will have the best chance for adding just a little bit more to the rain gauges from overnight. south bay about a tenth of an inch of rain and a quarter inch from san francisco to oakland out of the storm and we did see up to half an inch of rain for the north bay. but not much left now.

this is the afternoon forecast. the clearing skies and a rain totals from here on out for the rest of the morning generally light. less than about 500ths of an inch of rain and so here you go, hour-by-hour, you see the clouds and breaks in the clouds now. passing 11:00 and noon, you could see the skies clear perfect thorj to south and locally you might notice the winds pick up so that will clear out our skies and shut down the showers and after today not really going to see any in terms of big rain chances over the next seven to ten days. the storm track continues to the north. one brief chance of showers will happen monday night into tuesday but kind of like we're seeing right now, storm system not expected to bring a lot of rain and most of what does fall we think is up around the north bay. then after we pass tuesday, high pressure strengthens you see the orange coating on the map, a sign that the high turns even

stronger. it is possible by next saturday we could be seeing 70s in the forecast. and then as we head toward next sunday we nt cooler and breezy. still no sign of any rain in the extended forecast once we get beyond the light showers possible from monday into tuesday. so san francisco should be into the 60s bied e-- by the end of week. and temperatures interesting, friday, saturday and sunday and especially next saturday, 60s and 70s. as everybody gets ready for super bowl, closer to home we're looking at 70s and warm temperatures approaching next week. >> south floridian temperatures. part of me like is wow, beautiful and part of me is this is disturbing. >> we could use the rain and folks will have some plans for next weekend. so that is the nice part of the forecast. >> drag a couch outside and watch the game outside with your neighbors. rob, thanks so much. and thanks for making us part of
