in a bit. kari is handling both fof us this morning. kind of inform average start to the morning. >> feeling milder outside and it is not that cold. and patches of fog. elsewhere clear visibility. as we head out of the door in the south bay, a clear sky, temperatures starting out in campbell at about 44 and mid-40s up into the mid-50s by noontime and we'll see a lot of sunshine. there will be north bay rain chances going into this forecast. especially by late tonight. so we'll be tracking that next surge of rain coming in and where exactly we'll see hose showers. as we get on the roads this morning, a live look at the san mateo bridge. a live look at this camera shows that everything is flowing smoothly here. around the bay area, we haven't seen any major issues yet. a couple of minor issues and then getting a close look at the south bay, about to head out of the door now, it is still looking good and i'll let you know if there is any issues that

pop up in weather and traffic coming up again this a few minutes. >> sounds good, thank you, kari. people around the world still in disbelief. kobe bryant and his 13-year-old daughter were killed in a helicopter crash. tributes are pouring in as the investigation into what went wrong gets underway. >> jennifer bjorkland has the latest from los angeles. >> a surreal scene for fans outside of staples center. >> kobe is so great and i'm just waiting for somebody to tell me this isn't real. >> reporter: but there was this. smoking wreckage on the hillside on the route to the mamba sports academy where bryant and his 13-year-old daughter geeana were headed. >> it was very low flying. >> reporter: the circumstance or ski was waiting for clearance from the tower and making a u-turn before disappearing from radar. >> there was an issue of

the memorial and then also in the philippines including a painting of bryant outside of the house of kobe basketball court. 4:34 now. and new overnight, a dangerous high-speed police chase caught on camera that ended in arrest. it all started when vallejo police say burglars targeted a beauty supply store before 3:00 this morning. officers tried to pull over a car matching the description and that is when the chase started. the car zooming without lights on down i-80 in berkeley and ended when the car crashed into another car in oakland. police say three suspects ran from the scene but officers quickly caught up to them. the number of deaths continues to risen experts in beijing say this morning it is up to 80 deaths with 2700 more people infected. in the united states there are two more confirmed cases to bring the total to five involving patients in los angeles and arizona. both recently travelled in china

as did patients in the other three confirmed cases. in orange county, washington state and chicago. now at the same time doctors are monitoring more than a hundred patients in 26 states for possible symptoms. the fears about catching the virus are making a lot of americans extra concerned. >> every little cough, every little thing, oh, am i getting a sore throat, do i feel bad. those kind of things start to play with your mind. >> state health leaders say there is no immediate danger to the public. kris sanchez will join us with a live report ahead at 5:30. later this morning, the president's legal team will resume the defense in the senate impeachment trial. first day of defense on saturday consisted of a short two-hour session. the president's attorneys tried to rebutte three days of house democrats alleged abuse of power and obstruction of congress. the defense has 22 hours left to make their case over the next two days and later this week the senate may decide whether to

hear witnesses. 4:35 now. and our roads are more crowded than ever and yet fewer people are turning to public transit to escape the traffic jam. >> bob redell joins us in fremont with a look at the reason why. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning. you could blame ride sharing apps like uber and lyft and people live further away from transit hubs like the warm springs b.a.r.t. station in fremont. "the mercury news" is reporting a study by transportation, a study release in february, finding between 2016 and 2018, ridership on b.a.r.t. and muni and cal train and the other transit systems, ridership fell by 5.2% and that adds up to over 27 million fewer trips per year. it might not feel like that when you are crammed into your b.a.r.t. train during your morning commute.

because of the climb taking place during off peak hours. talking about nights and weekends not during the thermal commute times. the study believes ride-sharing services could be partly to blame. also the housing shortage has pushed people into the outer edges of the bay area where there is lessubli p transit available. so how do you get more people on the buses and rains? well the study suggests transit agencies could lower ticket prices and have more dedicated bus lanes and provide more housing closer to the transit hubs. bob redell, "today in the bay." concerns homeowners are meeting after a violent attack caught by a camera in oakland. the video is disturbing. it happened about a week ago in oakland. west of skyline boulevard, just as a woman was arriving home, there was a man with a gun who attacked her. police say he stole her valuables and so far no arrests have been made. tonight homeowners will attend a

town hall meet ago long with oakland council member lauren taylor. no doubt an emotional day on tap for students at one east bay school. with whun of the fellow students returns for the first time after being paralyzed in a shooting. it happened back in september when several people were caught in cross fire of a shooting nearby richmond deanza high school. a 16-year-old girl is now paralyzed from the chest down. she's scheduled to speak assembly today. be are ready in the event of another catastrophic wildfire. starting tonight thae libraries will start preparedness meetings. the tufts fire in 2017 killed 25 people and destroyed more than 4,000 homes. tonight's meeting takes place at 6:30 at the petaluma library. 4:48 right now and a new

europe is lower and on the watch list a report on new home sales. gas prices are edging lower around the country. regular unleaded falling 4 cents on average to $2.60 a gallon. now in the bay area gas is averaging more like $3.62 a gallon and analysts say it is due to larger oil prices but gas is still 35 cents higher than it was a year ago. and twitter pulled the plug on vine in 2017 but now the co-founder of the video app has debuted a sequel called bite. it it is available on android and iso devices. byte lets you share six second videos just like vine and much shorter than the one minute maximum on tik tok. but interestingly it lacks ar filters, transition effects and other bonus options for now. byte hopes to differentiate itself by helping creators make

welcome back. a good monday morning to you. taking a live l outde at downtown san jose. a nice start to our monday morning. and what pleasant temperatures expected this week. >> we're going to see just some slight rain chances and it is not all of the bay area to see the rain chances this week. it is going to warm up quite a bit and that is going to be the main story we'll have here. here is a live look outside in palo alto as you get ready to head out. highway 101 looking good and you're starting out with cool temperatures in the north bay as

well as the south county. many inland valleys are in the lower 40s right now. we're at 42 in livermore and 41 in napa, where we're seeing fog developing. and then in san jose it is 45 degrees. we're at 59 in san francisco. and oakland at 50 degrees. as you get ready to head out of the door in concord, expect upper 40s. we're at 48 degrees cooling down to 46 around sunrise and then a nice warm-up through the day as we reach into the upper 50s by ssed0. this morning, cool start as we're going to need a jacket and the rest of the day short sleeves are pretty comfortable for you as our up. let me show you the microclimates and what we're expecting today. here we are at noon, heading out for lunch and still in the upper 50s. into the rest of the day, we have slow 60s at 2:00 for the east bay and livermore at 60 degrees. 62 in the valley and then the temperatures staying in the 60s going into today.

and then cooling off for tonight. and this is the start of a warm-up which you are probably seeing at the bottom of the screen as we head into tomorrow morning mid-40s. but there will be rain chances moving in for the north bay. we're already seeing that right now as we've seen some active weather for the pacific northwest but a lot it stayed to the north of the bay area. only a chance of rain for the north bay into late tonight into early tomorrow morning. but there may be some spotty sprinkles to wake up to tomorrow and then the rest of the week the rain stays to the north of us. so through the rest of the pper 60s we'll s- wll stay dry. by the weekend. if you're making mansor your super bowl party or getting outside, it is looking perfect with the highs reaching into the upper 60s. as you get ready to head out of the door this morning, here is a live look at the golden gate bridge. no issues for the golden gate bridge. the fog staying away from the

bridge and then we've seen that zipper truck just move through a few minutes ago to move the lanes so the morning commute from the north bay well underway. and then we see for the rest of the bay area, a lot of green sensors, that means no slowdowns and everyone is flowing at the speed limit or at least the speed limit and then we haven't seen any major accidents this morning. so that is good news. hopefully it stays that way. i'll let you know if anything changes. another look at weather and traffic coming up again in less than ten minutes. >> thank you. concord leaders are still trying to work out a labor dispute now putting development of a former naval weapons station on hold. the latest twist involves letters from the developer and unions sent to the council expressing concerns about reaching an agreement. the letter from the developer lennar also gives the council until february 11th to satisfy a series of issues before the project moves forward. u.s. border patrol agents are allowing activists to replant a recently destroyed cross-border garden.

the garden was planted in 1971 as a symbol of bilateral bonds and known as friendship park. agency said workers unintentionally bulldozed the u.s. side of the garden. on saturday agents allowed activists in a highly revicted area to start replanting. through details on president trump's travel ban on people from predominantly muslim countries. the legal battle is headed back to a federal appeals court tomorrow when arguments will be heard in virginia over three lawsuits filed by u.s. citizens and residents whose relatives have not been able to enter the u.s. because of the ban. the court must decide whether a federal judge in maryland made a mistake when he refused to dismiss the lawsuit. 4:51, decision 2020 and the countdown is on to the first presidential caucus in iowa one week from today. joe biden is getting more support in new england. biden is hoping his endorsements could put him in the lead as a front-runner in new hampshire which votes two weeks from now.

in a new survey by a vermont radio station 29% of democratic voters are backing vermont senator bernie sanders. next is pete buttigieg at 17%. and then former vice president joe biden 14% and lastly senator elizabeth warren is coming in at 13%. san jose state university is on a new push to fight homelessness among students, a study found more than 4,000 students were struggling to find affordable housing in the last year. it is one of the highest rates among the campuses in california. the school will announce the new housing plan and one option is to turn an unused state building in downtown san jose into hundreds of new apartments. the state would allow the school to redevelop the building on passio del san antonio and the strip. the bike path on the richmond-san rafael bridge will be closed from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for the next few weeks to perform structural
