legend kobe bryant as new details emerge about the crash that killed bryant and his young daughter. video shows masses of heartbroken fans gathered outside of the staples center and you could see the growing memorial and people showed up throughout the even though they were told to stay away because the arena was holding grammy awards. >> ntsb will be at the crash scene trying to figure out why the helicopter went down killing all nine people on board. in the video you could see the smoking wreckage in the distance. the chopper went down in calabasas in heavy fog. and three additional victims wereowd fieded. all but one victim has been identified. the tragedy has been hard for long time fans of bryant to accept. >> kobe is so great and i'm just waiting for someone to tell me this isn't real. >> investigators will try to determine if those foggy conditions played aol waiting

to land in burbank when he made a u-turn before descending. >> we have team cover. pete suratos is live at the chase center with reaction from the warriors. >> but first live to anthony flores. we're not seeing the normal celebration after the death of kobe bryant and 49ers reacting to the loss of the mab legend. >> reporter: that is right. super bowl week kicked off on a somber note as news of kobe bryant's death and even 49ers reacting and richard sherman who grew up in los angeles tweeted this. just don't have the words. george kittle just one word from the all unbelievable. and joe montana tweeted our condolences to the bryant family and nba family and laker nation, rest in peace. as for the 49ers, they arrived in miami on sunday around 7:00 p.m. local time.

the super bowl arrival was more subdued because of the shock and sadness in the wake of the kobe bryant tragedy. today the 49ers will begin a week-long media blitz leading up to super bowl liv against the kansas city chiefs. both the niners and chiefs will be in the national spotlight with opening night. it is the traditional media day and we look forward from hearing from the 49ers as they take in all of south beach. now coming up later, we'll hear from rookie nick bosa who is living out a dream because he's playing the super bowl in his home town. reporting live in miami, anthony anks a, now back to you in the some of our biggest sports stars and fans are reacting to the sudden passing us live outside of the chase center with some of the response he' there. good guys. the golden state warriors like many nba teams paying tribute to the late great kobe bryant and they had an image on the

electronic billboard outside of the chase center that was up there yesterday and it is no longer there now. we'll show you video of the image put up not too long after bryant's sudden passing yesterday morning. now the team canceling practice yesterday following the tragic news of the passing of kobe bryant. and some of the team stars are paying respects to the basketball great and that includes steph curry who posted this instagram message you see there paying tribute to kobe bryant. the instagram message reads in part, that, quote, our faith is being tested but all i can say is thank you. may you and gianna rest easy and he's referring to the 13-year-old daughter in the helicopter and passed during hit oracle where warriors fans could hear more fans cheering for kobe instead of the home team at times. last game kobe bryant played in the bay area was at oracle arena

later this morning the president's legal team will resume its defense in the senate impeachment trial. the first day of defense on saturday consisted of a short two-hour session. the president's attorneys tried to rebut three days of house democrats alleging abuse of power and obstruction of congress last week. now as it stands the defense has 22 hours left to make the case over the next couple of days. and later this week the senate ay decide whether to hear right here throughout the> 5:07. and forget cruising down market street. starting wednesday everything will change. that is the day marketreet will permanently close to private cars. the ban will cover market from van ness to the water front. buses and taxis will be exempt and the idea to make public transit and easier for people on bicycles and pedestrians to have activity on market street. cars will be able to cross market street just not turn onto

it. san francisco supervisors will vote on whether to add new labelling warnings to warn people about the health effects of sugary beverages. p that passes sugarly drinks like soda will have a label with a san francisco government warning. it would advise people that sugary drinks could cause weight gain and increase the risk of obesity. happening today, trustees this san jose evergreen school district willecisn to close two schools. last week the superintendent recommended that the closure of laurelwood and dove hill elementary schools. it is due in part of the clining enrollment and a $12 million budget shortfall. a second hearing will be held next monday. trustees will make a final vote next month. it is 5:09. as you are up and out of the door this morning, we're taking a live look outside in oakland where we're getting a nice little breeze. and also not as much fog this morning. we are seeing some fog around napa where the temperatures drop down to 42. the coolest temperatures that

tax season is underway. this morning the internal revenue service will accept your return and you have until tax day, april 15th, to pay. last year many people did not get a refund, think paid much more than expected. even though in many cases they're taxes went down because they dt with hr and you fixed it for this year, right? right? hundreds of amazon employees have broken t spoken amazon require employees to get permission before allowing themselves to be quoted. but 340 of them added their names to thoughts on a blog post on sunday. one example, amazon's engineer said amazon participates in the global economy expecting its employees to maintain silence on these issues is really a reprehensible over reach and i'm proud to take this opportunity to demonstrate my unwillingness to comply. amazon acknowledged global climate change exists and the effect on the atmosphere. a couple of days ago it announced new plans to reduce the carbon footprint.

outside. ine warmer for some of the our east bay valleys reaching up to 63 in livermore and morgan hill we're looking at a high of 65 degrees today. oakland about 58 and 60 today in napa. so we are going to start to see some clouds moving in later on this evening. we are already seeing that rain to the north but then as we go into tomorrow morning, our rain chances stay mostly in the north bay. now it is been pretty busy but it is in terms of storm systems moving through the pacific northwest, but a lot of that has stayed to the north of the bay area. so we've been getting a couple of waves of rain here and there. but it hasn't been all that heavy. we're expecting more of the same going into tomorrow. with some north bay showers starting out during the morning commute from santa rosa on northward. the rest of the bay area will just see some more clouds. some off-and-on rain may roll through here by tomorrow afternoon. but for the most part most of us won't see that. and then the rain continues the stream just to our north. so our forecast for the rest of

the week is staying all dry and, in fact, we're going to warm up. we're looking at temperatures in the low 60s to start this week. but look at the end of the week. going to be for getting outside but at this point we do need rain so we're watching for that beyond the seven-day forecast. let's head out on the roads this morning. here is a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. they have to turn on the metering lights earlier because we're seeing a back-up so that monday morning commute underway. and also the north bay looking at highway 101 and seeing all of the car flowing through there fairly well. as we look across the rest of the bay area, just seeing a couple of minor issues but no major back-ups. it is a typical monday morning commute if you are heading out of the door now but i do expect back-up through the next hour. so time to get moving. we'll talk about weather and traffic, another update in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. 5:20 this morning.

5:23 right now. and new overnight, the search for a gun in the east bay. police in oakland are investigating a shooting near 70th and hamilton street before 8:00 p.m. police found a man shot in the shoulder and police are looking at video from nearby surveillance cameras. this man is considered arms and dangerous. alexander mcgee is accused in a deadly hit-and-run a week ago near university and sixth street where officers saw him attacking a woman in a parked car. when they approach the car, he took off and striking and killing a 58-year-old woman in the sidewalk. people warn everyone not to approach him and call 911. a follow up on a discovery last week that rattled people in one stockton neighborhood when authorities found a man who had died of natural causes in his home. well it turns out they also discovered what they believe were hundreds of military

explosives. but now investigators say those devices were actually harmless replicas. the scare forced 20 nearby homes to be evacuated for more than a day. leaders in malibu banning parking over the scenic pacific coast highway. council members approved a new plan that singles out, they say, otherwise homeless rv owners. neighbors say the parking problem is getting out of hand and this is not the first time leaders have approved such a ban. but the coastal commission needs to sign off on it as well. in the past commissioners have refused to do so. >> new problems this morning for california's problem-plagued high-speed rail. in a new federal audit, the project with running with an increased risk of not completing its agreement and there is not enough happening to fix the issues. the project has been floundering every since getting off the ground a decade ago. auditors say that the state has matched only aboutone-fifthf

for "today in the bay." >> i would imagine it changes the tone a little bit. thank you, anthony. now across the country, and the world tributes are pouring in for bryant. on your left a look at the growing memorial outside of his newport beach home. fans were seen playing flowers and photos and balloons and lakers memorabilia at memorial. on the right is a growing memorial in the philippines including a painting bryant outside of a newly built house of kobe basketball court. many are taking to social media to reflect on the life and legacy and nba stars including shack eel o'neill, magic johnson and michael jordan and dwyane wade sharing photos and memories. former president barack obama wrote this part, quote, kobe was a legend on the court and just getting started in what would have been just as meaningful second act. a dangerous high-speed police chase caught on camera that ended with arrests. this started when vallejo police burglars targeted a beauty

supply store before 3:00 this morning and officers tried to pull over the car matching the description and that is when the chase started. video showed the car zooming without lights on owe down i-80 in berkeley. this all ended when the car crashed into another car in oakland. police say three suspects ran from the scene but officers quickly caught up to them. >> 5:35 right now. new fears the deadly coronavirus outbreak is expanding as a new case is confirmed here in california. kris sanchez joins us live at sfo where internet passengers are getting screened upon arrival. kris? >> reporter: well, hi there, laura. and none of the new cases was reported here in northern california. but sfo gets three flights directly from wuhan province in china which is the epicenter of the outbreak. so they are taking the temperatures of those arriving international passengers and asking about symptoms as well and anybody who raises a red

flag will then be tested further. the new cases confirmed yesterday were in l.a. county, orange county, and maricopa county in arizona. and remember that the first two cases were confirmed in washington and chicago. all of those patients are being held in isolation. now the last time the cdc did airport screenings like these was d 2014 ebola outbreak. screeners in that case did not catch any sick passenger. like sfo, l.a.x. is also screening passengers which is where where an arriving passenger self-reported his system. >> the airport screenings are working effectively, but remember they're not perfect. >> reporter: now at this point here in the u.s., the cdc has about a hundred samples for suspected cases and ruled out about a quarter of those. in china, though, the coronavirus killed at least 56 people and sickened nearly 2,000 people.

australia yeah and france and singapore have con fimmed cases but with a 14-day incubation period those sick might not know it just yet. and the cdc said this is all a matter of being precautionary and your particular risk is probably very, very low unless you have traveled to china recently. at sfo, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> kris, thank you. 5:37 now. and australian investigators plan to release more information tomorrow about the crash of an air tanker that killed three u.s. firefighters. they're still combing that crash site and this is where, again, they are going to be this morning. investigators are interviewing a number of people who saw that plane go down. the three firefighters were helping on the front lines of the australian wildfires and you could see pictures right here. captain ian mcbeth, paul hudson and flight engineer rick demorgan jr., all three were military veterans. well if you've been out on a drive in the bay area recently, you know the roads are more

crowded than ever and fewer people are turning to public transit to escape the transit jams. bob redell live outside of the b.a.r.t. station in fremont with a look at the reason why. bob? >> reporter: well, laura, blame ride-sharing services like uber and lyft and people are living farther away from transit hubs like the one behind me at the warm springs b.a.r.t. station in freem. the mercury news is reporting that the ucla institute of transportation will release a study in february that found between 2016 and 2018, ridership on b.a.r.t., muni, cal train and all of the other bay area public transit systems combined fell by 5.2%. that is adding up to 27.5 million fewer trips per year. it might not feel like that when you are crammed into your b.a.r.t. train during your morning commute. but that is because the decline is taking place during off-peak hours according to the merc. the study believes ride-sharing

services could be partly to blame and the housing shortage has pushed people into the out edges of the bay area, into places like the central valley where there is less public transit available. so how do you get more people on the buses an trains? the study suggests transit agencies could lower ticket prices and more dedicated bus lanes and provide more housing closing to the transit hubs. live in fremont, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 5:39. and snoena county leaders want people to be ready in the event there is another wildfire. there will be a series of preparedness meetings. the tubbs wildfire in 2017 killed 25 people and destroyed more than 4,000 hom place at 6:30 at the petaluma library. and the bike path on the richmond-san rafael bridge will be closed for the them. few weeks to perform strucl

enjoy. as you head on the roads check out the morning commute. the south bay chute is looking good. starting to see more issues heading around parts of the east bay looking at the bay bridge where it is starting to back kwup and also on i-80. an this is away from the main commute direction and we'll see that possibly cause some back-ups, also looking at highway 4 seeing some of the sensors there turning yellow meaning if your going westbound on highway 4 through pittsburg it is starting to slow down. in the tri-valley an accident just happened on i-580 as well as that connector with 680. that may slow people down heading through that area. so the tri-valley drive times now showing red. westbound 84 to i-680 takes about 20 minutes and from grant line to 680 takes about 23 minutes so now is the time to go. we'll talk about what is going on today in our forecast. that is coming up in about three minutes. >> we'll check back it you, thanks, kari.

parts of the bay area all week long. so a dry start. no fog as we looko outside in palo alto. and our temperatures starting out at 44 degrees and holding through sunrise. a nice warm-up through the rest of the day. reaching into the upp eventuall there. 64 is the high in san jose. and antioch reaching 67 degrees. while napa will reach up to 60 degrees. so nice, warm temperatures for this time of the year. and we've seen the rain just to the north of us. and that will cause some clouds to move into parts of the north bay as we look at the wider view it is pretty active out there. although all of the rain stays to the north of most of the bay area, only some north bay rain chances over the next 24 hours. we're look hour-by-hour today. we're staying dry, clouds moving in. look at the rain starting to move in by the morning commute in santa rosa on northward. as it moves into the rest of the bay area, it just falls apart.

maybe some spotty light showers possible tomorrow. but that is about it. and the rest of the week we are going to stay dry. temperatures warming up. we're going from the low 60s to start out the week to the upper 60s, maybie -- maybe even a few areas in the 70s. and san francisco watching out for the slight chance of rain tomorrow morning and then continuing on with sunshine tlupout the rest of the week. as you head out of the door this morning, here is a live look at the san mateo bridge. no major problems here so we were seeing the traffic flowing well across the san mateo bridge but then as we look elsewhere, we're starting to see a few problems popping up looking on the other side bridge we may see a slowdown there and then for the east bay a truck that may be causing a slowdown as you head through the richmond area on i-80 and it hasn't caused a major back-up but also a truck that is broken down on the side of the road. most of it not affecting your

down to 44 degrees. and then a slow warm-up as we go into the rest of the day. but looking pretty nice with the mostly sunny skies. inland valley reaching into the mid to upper 60s, low 60s along the coast. and a live look at san mateo bridge as we're starting to see it slow down there. all of the bridges are starting to slow down. check out the back-up at the bay bridge toll plaza andg lights turned on an issue with a truck that may be blocking one lane. also a few minor incidents causing slowdowns coming on i-80 and we've also back-up that is just past richmond starting to ease up a bit.
