"today in the bay" continues right now. a very good morning and thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. right now we want to look at what you could expect as you

head out of the door this morning. kari hall is monitoring the forecast. >> it is a cool start around the bay area. we've only seen light patches of fog here and there. for the most part we're clear and it is warmest in san francisco. where it is 50 degrees. we're down to 43 in the tri-valley. 42 in napa. and 40 in san martin and san jose starts out at about 44 degrees. through the day, from a light jacket to probably no jacket at all as our temperatures warm up and we get some sunshine reaching near 60 degrees by the time that last school bell rings. as we get out of the door checking out the morning commute it is a slow drive across the san mateo bridge. no fog right now. and we've also seen more people getting up and heading out of the door. but no major crashes which is good news. let's hope it says that way. i'll have another update coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. well fans and nonfans mourning the death of kobe bryant as new details emerge

about the crash that killed him and his young daughter. ntsb investigators are expected to be at the crash site this morning trying to figure out why the helicopter went down killing all nine people on board. this video shows the smoking wreckage. that chopper went down in calla bass kwas yesterday morning in heavy fog. >> and authorities identified three additional victims including kobe's 13-year-old daughter gianna and all but one victim has been identified. investigators want to know iffing to played a role in the crash. >> there was an issue of visibility and a low ceiling. the actual conditions at the time of impact, that is still yet to be determined. >> the pilot was apparently waiting for clearance to land in burbank when he made a u-turn before descending. in the meantime, super bowl festivities are supposed to start but many people don't feel like celebrating. >> and anthony flores is live in

miami. this is a time that people want to celebrate but i'm sure that took a pause for a bit. >> reporter: it certainly did, shock, sadness, probably best described the mood here in miami, yes, it is super bowl week supposed to be a big party but that is not really the vibe here. at least not yet. everyone still dealing with the loss of kobe bryant. even the 49ers are reacting to the death of the basketball icon. the 49ers tweeting this out. a legend gone too soon. with heavy hearts we send condolences to the bryant family after the tragic loss of kobe, gianna, who is his daughter and prayer for those who lost a loved one, hashtag rest in peace mamba. the team arrived around 7:00 p.m. local time and the celebration that normally goes with a super bowl arrival was more subdued many the wake of the bryant tragedy. now tonight the niners will be in the national spotlight with opening night, that is media day

for the super bowl, and for rookie nick bosa, this is a home coming. he grew up and played high school football in nearby fort lauderdale so this is a dream come true. >> it's really awesome. i mean to be in my home town and i went to a lot of dolphin games and my dad plays i played a cou of high school games there and so it is obviously pretty big moment for us. >> reporter: and as i mentioned, it is opening for the 49ers and the chiefs. likely bosa and the rest of the teammates will answer a lot of questions about the life and legacy of kobe bryant. reporting live in miami, anthony flores for "today in the bay." >> thank you. across the country and world for that matter tributes are pouring in for bryant. on the left, a growing memorial outside of his newport beach home. fans were seen placing flowers and photos and balloons and lakers memorabilia at the

memorial. on the right the growing memorial in the philippines including a painting of bryant. this was outside of the newly built house of kobe basketball court. and many are taking to social reflecting on bryant's life and legacy. nba stars including long time teammate shack i'll o'neal and magic johnson and dwyane wade sharing momentos. president obama said he would have a meaningful second act. and new overnight in dangerous high-speed police chase caught on camera that ended with arrest. it started when vallejo police say burglars targeted a beauty supply store before 3:00 this morning. officers tried to pull over the car matching the description and o showing the ended se started. with the car crashing into another car in oakland. police say three spe offers p with them. 6:35 now.

new fears the deadly coronavirus outbreak is expanding as a must case is confirmed here in california. "today in the bay" kris sanchez joins us live at sfo where a lot of international travelers are getting screened right when they arrived. kris? >> reporter: well, hi there, laura. none of the new cases here in northern california. but sfo gets flights from wuhan, china, which is where the center of the outbreak is. travel restrictions are in effect there. but tomorrow they will evacuate personnel and private citizens from wuhan here to california. now health screeners here at sfo are taking temperatures of arriving international passengers and asking about symptoms and new cases confirm yesterday in l.a. county, orange county and maricopa county in arizona. the first two cases were confirmed in washington and chicago. all of the patients are being

held in isolation. and last time cdc did airport screening was in the 2014 ebola outbreak. screeners, though, did not catch any cases. like sfo, l.a.x. is also screening passengers which is where an arriving passenger self-reported his symptoms. >> the airport screenings are working effectively, but remember they're not perfas abo 100 samples for suspected cases they've ruled out about a quarter of those so far. in china the coronavirus killed at least 80 people and sickened nearly 3,000 and that is a jump over yesterday's numbers. australia, france, scrape, singapore, thailand also have confirmed cases. but with a 14-day incubation period, some folks who are sick may not know it yet. a reminder, the cdc said this is all precautionary at your risk, my risk and average person, our risk is very, very low unless we

have traveled to china recently. at sfo, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> good to know there, kris, thank you. 6:37 now. and people agree with this. our roads are more crowded than ever. and yet fewer people are turning to public transit to escape the traffic jams. "today in the bay's" bob redell outside of the warm springs b.a.r.t. station in fremont with the reason why. so, bob, why are we seeing this? >> reporter: well, marcus, according to the study, you could blame ride-sharing services like uber and lyft and people are living farther away there transit hubs. we're outside of the warm springs b.a.r.t. station in fremont. the mercury news is reporting about a new study lei-- study released by kwlu and found that between 2016 and 2018 ridership on b.a.r.t., muni, cal rain and all of the other bay area transit fell by 5.2% adding up

to 27.5 million fewer trips per year. it may not feel that way when you cram into the commute because it is taking place during the off peak hours, talking about fligh talking about -- about night and weekends. and the housing shortage push people into the outer edges of the bay area into the central valley where less public transit is available. how do you get more people on buses an strains. the study suggests transit agencies could lower ticket prices and build more dedicated bus lanes and pde housing hubs. live in dominicbob redell, "today in the bay." no doubt a emotional day on tap for students at one east bay school. one fellow students returned after being paralyzed in a shooting back in september when several people were caught in the cross fire o shooting near richmond deanza high

school. a 16-year-old girl is now paralyzed from the chest down. she's scheduled to speak at an assembly today. in the weeks after the shooting police arrested all three suspects. all of whom attended deanza. forget cruising down san francisco market street. starting wednesday everything will change. that is the day market street permanently closes to private cars. the ban will cover market from van ness to the waterfront. buses and taxis will be exempt. the idea is to prioritize public transit and make market more acceptable for cyclists and ont. so that is a major change to get used to. >> it will take some time. but maybe help the situation. >> we'll see. so weend. whether you're having a party or about to catch a flight to miami, we're going to have some great weather there and here at home. kickoff at 72 degrees. and we'll see in miami a nice

warm one. breezy at times and then by the end of the game it is only dropping down a few more degrees. if you are hiking, saturday is the best day. sunshine and slightly warmer temperatures in muir woods. 62 degrees and cooler on sunday. a light cooldown along the coast by the end of the weekend and you'll be at home watching the game anyway. we're at 62 on saturday for that high temperature in half moon bay and in the tri-valley looking very nice but look at how warm it is going to be. up to 70 degrees on saturday. and then cooler with more clouds on sunday. let's get out on the roads on this monday morning as you head out. we've seen a little bit of a slowdown on the bay bridge past treasure island and something slowing people down but elsewhere across the bay area some minor crashes but no big back-ups. i'll have another update and we'll take a look at the south bay temperature trend in three minutes. >> thanks, kari. coming up next on "today in
