colors. i don't know the official names for the colors but the chiefs and the niner so wshe ea red and gold. >> big time. i heard there are more niners fans buying tickets -- >> because the niners are better. >> truth is truth. >> we're looking forward to that. and a nice day ahead. >> great weather for super bowl. but we'll just have to get through some north bay showers today and light rain many san francisco. but most of this falls through the morning and will be very light. here is a look at golden gate bridge. you could tell it is damp out there. you may have to turn on the windshield wipers just a bit. here is a look at what is happening as rain moves in ahead of the a cold front and a lot of the rain will dry out and still rain chances in the north bay while the rest of the bay area will miss out on it. we'll talk more about this and what is ahead for the rest of the week. mike, you're tracking the roads. >> we see mist on the richmond san rafael bridge. we don't see it at the bay bridge just yet.

but slowing down at berkeley curve toward the bay bridge back-up. e left approach plo.nes off under 20 minutes toward the bay bridge but that is building over the next half an hour as well as we come through berkeley. non the south bay ae s o c that. >> thanks, mike. sunnyvale. i'll hand it off to you for new overnight parts of highway 85 open again after a driver crashed into stevens creek before 1:00 in the morning near the fremont avenue off-ramp in sunnyvale. chp said that car shot through a fence first and then ended up in the creek. two people were in that car. neither were seriously injured. chp said alcohol played a role in that crash and the driver is now facing dui charges. taking a live look at capitol hill. it is 6:02 this morning. it is the last day of senate arguments and a startling new revelation from a former trump insider shaking things up on the senate floor. tracie potts joins us live in washington with the very latest.

tracie? >> reporter: hi, laura, good morning, everyone. well it is the last day for the president' team to make the case, a lot of talk in washington about the unpublished book by former national security adviser john bolton and whether bolton needs to come testify. >> they say their case is overwhelming and uncontested, it is not. >> reporter: the president's legal team wrapped their case today with huge news happening outside the senate chamber. >> we do not deal with speculation -- >> reporter: "the new york times" reports former national security adviser john bolton heard it directly from president trump, freg military aid to force an investigation of joe biden in the unpublished books. >> what about the allegations of -- >> false. >> reporter: despite denials by the president. >> nothing was ever said to john bolton. >> reporter: through is now a push for bolton to testify. >> i think john bolton's relevance to our decision has

become increasingly clear. >> the senators cannot hide from a relevant witness who has come forward willing to testify. >> if are republicans try to keep him from being a witness, that means they feel he's very credible. >> reporter: the president's team staying focused, barely mentioned bolton. >> nothing in the bolton revelations even if true would rise to the level of an abuse of power or an impeachable offense. >> reporter: their defense amid growing pressure for bolton to testify. and more about that book. there were also h conversations with the attorney general and there were concerns that president trump was doing favors for other world leaders. this morning, this morning new, a statement from the justice department saying that bolton grossly mischaracterized those

conversations with william barr. >> tracie potts live from washington. thank you. be sure to stay with nbc bay area. scott mcgrew will do a deeper dive in the checks and balances segment and when with the impeachment trial resumes nbc coverage will include special reports throughout the day. 6:05 now. and the death of kobe bryant leaving a feeling of loss around the globe. and at tonight's game between the lakers and clippers have been postponed. and now new video showing the helicopter within a half an hour before it crashed. now this is something a lot of experts are saying may provide clues in answer why it went down. that video was shot by a homeowner in glendale abouthey had no idea it could be bryant's chopper. investigators are asking for any pictures or even images that could show what the weather conditions were like at time of sunday's crash. with clouds and thick fog, the pilot requested special visual rules for low ceilings, radar

shows that the chopper nearing calabasas as the pilot asked for guidance from air traffic control. >> you're still too low level for a flight following at this time. >> approximately four minutes later the pilot advised they were climbing to avoid a cloud layer. when atc asked what the pilot planned to do, there was no reply. >> patrols are on atvs and horseback to keep people away from the crash site. and tributes continue to grow across the country for bryant as super bowl liv kicked off last night, a moment of silence wahe name. on the outside of chase center in san francisco, bryant's photo is shining bright for fans and warriors draymond green and coach steveker reacted to the death in philadelphia, where they are playing the 76ers tonight. >> if you just watched kobe and you're a fan, you're grieving.

if you are a fan of basketball, you're grieving. and if you knew him, you're crushed. >> you can't understand it. it makes no sense. >> and steph curry's wife took to instagram to share this photo of bryant and his daughter. and uconn women's basketball team paid tribute to gianna bryant before monday's game against the team usa. uconn laid out a jersey and flowers. gianna dreamed of playing basketball for the huskies before playing for the wnba. >> nice tribute there. 6:07 now. new this morning, a build up that would leave utilities like pg&e for damages for controlled power outages has cleared a big hurdle in sacramento. senator scott wiener authored that bill to allow customers to receive refunds from things like lost wages or spoiled food. "the chronicle" reports the state senate yesterday voted overwhelmingly to approve it. now the bill moves to the assembly. another bill introduced last week would authorize the state to refund schools for loss

revenue and offer makeup days for students who missed classroom time. a new warning from the cdc to avoid travel to china for nonemergency tripsment this , d deadly coronavirus. at least 106 people have died as a result. in california, a possible case is being investigated. this is another one. this time in san diego. it is believed that that patient may have contracted the disease while traveling in china. this is near the epidemic ground zero. doctors don't know for sure until the cdc returns with test results. >> it makes me more concerned. i'm going to wear it until -- [ inaudible ]. just in case. >> today a flight will carry u.s. diplomatic employees out of wuhan where the virus originated. but that flight will not be stopping at sfo and passengers will be screened before and after the flight. lyft and uber reportingly

hands and hugging it out. now the 49ers have eight players with super bowl experience including quarterback jimmy garoppolo. but in the two super bowls he was part of it, he was the back-up to tom brady and this time he is the starter so it is the first time being in the super bowl spotlight. >> last time i was out there. i was out there -- i was in the jungle out there. so got a little more space this time. living good right now. >> about a year ago i was learning to run again. so it is just how things change in a year and what could happen. this year has been a whirlwind, been a great time, though. i just had a great time with the team. >> we were said that once we started winning with this team we're going to be good and have a good time doing it. >> on the other sideline i considered good for a long time but a win in the super bowl the chiefs' head coach has been would all but make him a lock for the hall of fame. earlier in the coaching careers way an assistant at san francisco state and i asked if he ever imagined working for the

week long leaving up to the super bowl. anthony and raj mathai and cheryl hurd will join us with insights up until kickoff. but until kickoff, we talk about the weather here. looking good for super bowl. >> yeah, it is going to go be great for both miami and the bay area. now we're looking at temperatures in miami at kickoff at 72 degrees. and the really luck is because there is heavy rain on saturday but then on sunday all of it is gone. so we do have some nice weather there even waking up this morning as we bring it back to the bay area, now we're starting out today with some rain.weekd on hosting a football party it is going to be temperatures in the low 60s as we start off kickoff here in the bay area. partly cloudy and a breezy wind. we do also look at some dry conditions here. now we'll talk about what is going on today coming up. mike, you're starting out in the south bay. i'm starting out with a little bit of crow because i have to eat it. i have a little grief on twitter and i said yellow and reds will

driver. plus coronavirus hits the markets really hard. but they're looking a little better today. we'll take a look at its effect when "today in the bay" continues. as mayor, mike bloomberg slashed carbon emissions as a leader in the fight against climate change, he helped shut down over half of the nation's coal plants, then led one of the biggest pollution reduction efforts in history. as president, he intends to reduce emissions by fifty percent within ten years. because if we want to stop climate change,

are the first to announce travel restrictions. you won't see promotions for mr. peanut in the social feeds. planters has paused that campaign after the death of kobe bryant and will start running the ad during the super bowl but has decided against social ads. on a lighter note, atari the old game company has licensed the fame themed hotel in phoenix and eventually san francisco and san jose. very nostalgic. kids who grew up with it now in 50s and 60s. lady gaga out with a new song called "stupid love" and she's upset that people are pirating that song. so she sent out a tweet asking people to stop. take a look at the tweet. she writes can y'all stop and then included a picture from the stock photo service shutter stock. but as you could see, she used the proof version of the toto, the one you don't pay for. the one that has water marks all over it. shutter stock responded, with we

hear you, we like artists to get paid too. here is a link to the photographer's work where you could license the picture. apple reports its profits after the closing bell. it was ten years ago this week, yesterday in fact apple introduced the ipad. nobody was quite sure it would be successful. apple got huge pushback on the name and people thought ipad was weird but then again they hated ipod when they named that one as well. i was at that one. and steve jobs holes up ipod and you're like it's what? it is not a pod. it wasn't even the first mp3 player. nobody was impressed. >> i still have any apple -- my mini pad and i have my -- the ipod. >> and of course then there was the wee, the nintendo wee and called the what? >> i remember that. >> very unique. come a long way. >> a long way we've come and we're probably hungry.

>> right. well to the next story. burgers but hold the hot dogs. this new image shows the iconic wiener mobile being pulled over by deputies in wisconsin. that driver didn't follow the move-over law which requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching a car that has hazard lights on. now maybe you're thinking, it was not this dog's day. but the driver got off with just a warning providing the deputy was more bark than bite. >> see that down the road. >> want to play the song. oh, i wish i was an oscar meyer wiener. >> thank you for putting that right here, marcus. >> good morning >> all right, another classic, meteorologist kari hall's forecast. a good one. light rain pretty good today. and in parts of the bay area, not all of us will seehi wet de in oakland where we are getting started with no fog, everyone is rolling and gschool day if oakland, we're going to see a lot of clouds today.

but at least we could leave the umbrellas at home. here we see clouds but not a lot of rain. temperatures reaching into the upper 50s throughout the school day. eventually reaching about 58 degrees for a high. concord we're heading to up 62. 60 in napa. and in san francisco expect a high of 57 degrees. now we do have some rain. very close by. here is a cold front that is moving closer but it does continue to weaken so we're still looking at slight rain chances for the north ba spotty off-and-on light rain as we go through 11:00. we are seeing some of the showers moving through san rafael, santa rosa and ukiah and still have the chance of rain over toward napas as well. as we go through about noon it comes into san francisco as well as the bay. there may be a slight chance of rain for the coast but notice the east bay, it is staying dry and that is what we'll see for the rest of the bay area going into the noon.

now the seven-day forecast shows after the slight chance of rain today, we dry out for the rest of the week. we have some upper 60s, expected through the end of the week, it going to feel like spring and i do expect a lot of the res to start budding under this warm weather. we're going to keep the dry weather into the start of next week for san francisco also gradually warming up this time for the weekend. now, mike, how is it looking in the south bay. we'll show you that map and see the san jose moves nicely with little slowing around capit capital expressway but they show the build one after the other there is 101. watch for 87. and 85 showing slowing where a disabled vehicle was reported but they have a tow truck arrived and it is out of the lanes but the distraction is setting off slowing as there is more traffic through san jose and pushing up toward the rest of silicon valley. sunnyvale moving smoothly. and the ramp reopened after the crash there and issues toward

- ( phone ringing ) - get details on this state program visit right now or call during business hours. and 6:26 right now. an nbc bay area responds to a sunnyvale homeowner whose spill on a scooter. >> good morning. over the summer charles shaw was riding his scooter when he crashed and broke his arm and wound up taking an ambulance to the hospital. he said he paid a $277 co-pay for the ride. but later the ambulance company sent him a bill for more than $2,300. and he couldn't get them to see that his insurance had already paid. charles asked if we could help. we messaged both the ambulance and insurance company about the double billing and another offered an explanation but

6:31. good tuesday morning to you. thanks for joining us for "today in the bay." i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. first of all, it is about the super bowl. showdown this week in a live look in miami where the 49ers and the kansas city chiefs are gearing up for the biggest game of the year. and coming up, a look at the nfl all-star texting quarterback jimmy g. good luck. and you might actually be surprised by this but first we want to check in with meteorologist kari hall with a look at the forecast we could expect here in the bay area. we're going to start out with a slight chance of rain in the north bay. we're seeing the system moving in closer and it will bring in a chance of some spotty showers in the north bay. as of now, we're just seeing the mist and drizzle there from ukiah down to santa rosa, even seeing some of the rain in san francisco. and then as we look at the rest of the bay area, east bay as

well as the south bay, missing out on many of the showers and then by this afternoon we're seeing it clear up. this is our only chance of rain we have this weekment so i'll have more look ahead for the weekend. mike, you found that drizzle and mist out there as well. >> exactly like you described, kari. so it was right on the nose. looking over here on the golden gate bridge and just use caution through the area with mist hitting the camera at the richmond san rafael bridge but not at the bay bridge. but there is sheen so maybe mist in the area but no windshield wipers. we do have metering lights in the back-up typical slowing for the upper east shore freeway and the build through walnut creek and into orinda and a smooth drive for contra costa county and the tri-valley showing slowing through pleasanton and the disabled vehicle still on the report but no additional slowing out of san leandro toward fremont. a crash at slowing.

mark to you. six months ago today the gunman suddenly turned gilroy garlic festival forever changing the site. the gunman killed himself as officers responded. "today in the bay" kris sanchez joins us live where the healing process continues. >> reporter: people still leave teddy bears and flowers and poemt -- and mementos but toward they will have a resource center to help try to move forward. now the first thank you last night for first responders who responded to the gilroy garlic festival shooting at the sharks game. if you look closely, you could see each uniform had gilroy strong printed on it and the sharks donated $46,000 to the gilroy strong fundraising effort and the gilroy chief of police really hopes that people will ultimately remember the festival the way that it was before.

>> we've dealt with the tragedy and the trauma and of course some of the victims are still going through that but i want to keep stuff fresh in people's minds so they remember what the festival was about and what it does for the community and all of the positives and in hopes that we could continue to move forward and create a successful festival in the future. >> reporter: now the gilroy strong resiliency center will open permanently at at work space on monterey road and will provide counting and trauma education and plans to add more hours in the months to come. the grand opening is happening at 2:30 this toon and it is open to the public. in gilroy, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you, chris. talking about the bay area housing crisis, now you see it everywhere really and people are being forced out of homes into

leang a lot of people with fewer options when it comes to where to park those overnight rvs. now it may soon change in berkeley and that is where bob redell joins us live with some details of what the city is planning to do about it. bob? >> reporter: laura, tonight at berkeley city council they're considering a proposal to open up its parking lots to people living in rvs including this lot at the berkeley animal shelt the plan the city would allow up to 25 rvs to camp overnight during nonbusiness hours in the safe parking locations for up to three months during what is called a grace period. berkeley is dealing with this problem as we're all aware. a 2019 census data showed that over 9,000 people are living out of vehicles an we're talking about cars rvs in the nine county bay areas and many parked illegally overnight in side streets or in front of

businesses and overnight [ inaudible ] within city limits but they can't enforce the rule as berkeley is reporting they have approved the idea of a -- [ inaudible ] as a compromise but not yet found a 2ur losing >> there you go. >> we're losing your there. but we'll continue to watch what is happening with the berkeley city council possibly letting rvs park there at the humane center. thanks, bob. the next story you're looking at, happening today, san francisco supervisors will vote on whether to add ania warning label on sugary drinks and if the proposal should passs sugar drinks like soda would have a label with a san francisco government warning advising people that sugary drinks could cause weight gain and increase risk of obesity. and today concerned san francisco residents who live at

the site of the former naval shipyard at hunter's point will hear about the latest radiation testing results. they are holding a community meeting at the testing and they believe the soil there is no longer radioactive but as our investigative unit first discovered years ago the clean-up has been tainted by fake results or tests that were never really conducted. see the full story on the website at nbcbayarea.com. a traffic alert for drivers in the east bay to tell you about. cal translate tonight will temporarily closed the caldecott tunnel on east bay highway 24, the two tunnels heading from oakland to orinda and they will repair lights in the tunnel. it should reopen in time tor the morning commute. but we'll keep tabs on that. mike has his eye on not only the tunnels and bridges and roadways, the works in the bay area. >> that is an issue. this morning the commute goes

westbounhe closure tonight eastbound and we'll continue to track that and i'll show you why that is critical in a second. the richmond-san rafael bridge and the lens have been wiped off and now clear and just sheen and not a lot of rain as kari talked about maybe light rain or mist or drizzle or whatever you want to call it. the typical flow of the commute through contra costa county and through orinda and toward the caldecott westbound is the commute direction and if you do cut off 24 like the caldecott tonight there is an issue of reroute toward 580 or 680 or toward highway 37 that is overnight. right here the rest of the bay and a spooj drive. we'll talk about the south bay and slowing on 85 in the next report. >> sounds good. thanks, mike. here we do. heading into the weekend. super bowl game and so much fun and everything is planned. how will it look. >> it is going to be perfect. we have great weather. we're going to be warming up into the weekend and we're looking at some of the warmest temperatures we've seen in quite

democrats to make that happen. bolton, as you know, through everything off guard after the manuscript for his book was leaked showing he's going to say trump did, indeed, link military aid with an investigation of the bidens. now trump's defense lawyers largely ignored bolton bombshell in the presentation yesterday. ken starr made a bit of news when he complains that president as are impeached too often. ken starr has been involved in two-thirds of all impeachments in presidents in american history. president trump tweeted the democrat controlled house never even asked john bolton to testify. it is up to them, not to the senate. the president is not telling you the truth. the house did ask bolton to testify. in fact, they put him on the calendarment a few headlines are from back then. house democrats ask john bolton to testify in trump impeachment probe on november 7th and they call for his deposition. so why didn't bolton testify?

the white house told him not to. bolton at the time said he would wait for a court decision. now while democrats did ask, they never subpoenaed, ts would work to trump's advantage with the subpoena stuck in the courts until after the election. bolton now said he is willing to talk. his manuscript shows the thing that he's willing to talk about is directly related to the very core of the impeachment question. taking a look at the calendar, republicans will continue their defense today. senators have then two days of questions, that is thursday, friday. then a vote on witnesses as early as saturday. sunday off. if there are witnesses, this trial could go much longer. either way, next week, monday the iowa caucus, two state of the union. today at white house, president trump will meet with israeli

rain today. it is been very spotty from santa rosa, extending over toward northern napa county up through lake county. we've seen the showers moving through. but the system continues to weaken. so as it moves south of santa rosa, we see the showers falling apart. t the will stille of rain. here we are at 11:30 and we see showers around half moon bay and san francisco. possibly some rain near the coast. but look at what is i the east bay. not a whole lot. only some very slight rain chances and then the sky clears for the rest of the day. and in fact the rest of the forecast clears out as our temperatures warm up. we'll see some upper 60s, won't be surprised to see 70 degrees and a while since we've had weather this warm so get out there and enjoy it, making plans to get outside. ma maybe go hiking on saturday but on sunday we're inside watching the game. >> pike, you're trying to help people through jams. >> and there is a jam at the grocery store so shop earlier rather than later.

a smooth flow of traffic. i want to talk you not to the east bay because that is moving as you would predict for a tuesday. we're looking at the south bay with slowing at 101 and 87 and then northbound 85 there was a crash and slowing really focusing around saratoga but over the last ten minutes we've seen it smooth out. still slow out of the al madden valley. i was checking to see if there were other crashes and there are not one. and this green route is around the big jam clearing but if you notice theft another route through the back and it is two minutes faster. so waze will help you evaluate your route in the morning. join nbc bay area wazers and the name went away but you know it because you're watching nbc bay area. we'll talk about how waze might help you tomorrow. market stree to find an alternate. mission will be there but for everybody else. meanwhile across and through the east bay, a back-up at the bay bridge.

it is 6:55. before you head out of the door here are the top stories on "today in the bay." >> new overnight, parts of highway 85 open again after a driver crashed into stevens creek. it happened just before 1:00 a.m. near the fremont avenue off-ramp in sunnyvale. chp said the car shot through a fence and then ended up in creek. two people were in the car and neither were injured but chp said alcohol played a role in the crash and the diver now facing dui charges. and six months ago today a gunman turned the gal lick festival into chaos. three people died and dozens

were injured. today gilroy is hoping to provide counseling for those still grieving or experiences post traumatic stress and nobody as the gilroy strong resiliency center at the neon exchange workplace on monterey road open from 5:30 to 8:30 every tuesday and thursday. and new this morning, a bill that would leaveute ill ilts like pg&e on the big bill in sacramento. senator wiener authored the bill to receive refunds from lost wages or spoiled foodch "the chronicle" reported that the state voted overwhelmingly to approve it. another bill introduced last week would authorize the state to refund schools for lost revenue and offer makeup dates for students who missed classroom time. and berkeley city leaders will consider adopting a three month grace period for overnight rv parking in city-owned parking lots. if the council moves forward the
