here july 28th, 2020 >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everybody welcome to "today. good to have you with us on tuesday morning. hoda is on assignment. you're just back from los angeles. i can't imagine what it must have been like standing outside the staples center yesterday. >> so much heartbreak. and this morning so many questions. >> a lot of questions. in fact, that is our top story, new information emerging on that helicopter crash that killed nine people, including nba legend kobe bryant and his daughter gigi. and overnight lebron penned a moving tribute to who he called his big brother. we'll get to that in a moment. but first nbc's tom costello is beginning our coverage on the investigation. he's near the crash scene in calabasas this morning good morning, tom. >> savannah, good morning. behind me the sheriff's department continues to watch

over the scene an ntsb team is up on the hill they're documenting every piece of ywreckage, even using a drone to survey the entire field but questions remain, did the veteran pilot somehow become lost in the fog and clouds and slam into the hill or was there a mechanical issue? why and how did this helicopter go down, killing everybody on board? this morning new video of what appears to be kobe bryant's helicopter taken just 30 minutes before it crashed by a homeowner living under its verified flight pattern. now as investigators search for clues in the wreckage off the steep hillside, they're also looking up the weather as a factor the ntsb appealing to the public for help. >> we're looking for photos of the weather in the area of the crash. >> reporter: the pilot identified as era zobayan was an experienced aviator and flight instructor who colleagues say

but safety first sut sunday morning quick fog had grounded lapd and sheriffs' choppers so why did zobayan fly? >> my concern is the decision-making process. if we're not flying, why is anyone else flying >> reporter: just moments before the crash, scott daehlin heard the crash from above. >> just 20, 30 seconds i heard plexy grass breaking up. >> reporter: to have had this happen right here in front of you, what was that like? >> i just wish it didn't have to happen >> reporter: kobe bryant regularly leased the luxury chopper, a sikorsky that took off at 9:08 a.m. headed to bryant's train ago cad my in thousand oaks. air traffic control told the pilots to follow highways to the north, a normal procedure. but with the clouds and fog, zobayan requested special visual flight rules for low ceilings.

the chopper climbed and descended quickly before dropping off radar with month mayday >> 2 echo x ray, you're still too level for flight following at this time 346 the sikorsky has one of the best safety records of any helicopter chopper pilot kurt dietz, who also has known for kobe bryant, said he never felt pressured by the basketball star to fly in any unsafe conditions. >> did he ever insist trying to get through weather or anything like that? >> oh, no, no, no. flying is his final authority. >> so it's up to him >> yes. >> tom, there are so many questions here but it was so striking the ntsb investigators said they wanted the public's help they want pictures of the weather in the area. is that unusual? >> the ntsb really in recent years has been coming out and asking for the public's help because everybody has a cell phone these days

people have photographs, they have video like you saw in that piece of the chopper just a few minutes earlier and they want to collect all of that data from the chopper flying and also the weather. by the way, the sheriff's department had a problem with curious onlookers trying to climb up that hill to get to the wreckage scene so the sheriff's department has deployed officers on horseback and atvs they have a perimeter around this entire hill, mountain, however you want to describe it, to keep people away. >> tom, as i understand no black box, no cockpit voice recorder other than the pictures and video from folks who might have been in the area, how else are officials planning to get data from the flight? >> by the way, that was a surprise announcement when they said yesterday there was no cockpit voice recorder we were led to believe there probably was so they will try to get as much data as they can off the avionics inside the helicopter this is an advanced helicopter there should be good data off of that in addition the ipad the pilot

was using to file his fight plan, that should also hopefully glean some data and anything from air traffic control, from the radar tapes, all of that will be part of this investigation. >> tom, you imagine this high-speed crash into the side of a mountain, do they think they're going to be able to retrieve that data will it be in a form they can get the information? >> that's certainly the hope as you know right now, these micro processors are pretty small. they usually can withstand a crash but there was also significant fire absolutely all of that will be of concern. >> tom costello at the site for us thank you. the your pouring of grief and outpouring of support for all nine of the investigates only growing this morning, led by emotional new tributes to kobe bryant. including a very touching one from fellow nba star lebron. nbc's miguel almaguer has that story. good morning to you. >> craig, good morning

lebron said he last heard kobe bryant's voice sunday morning but he never in a million years thought that would be their last conversation today so many are remembering bryant, his 13-year-old daughter gianna and seven other people whose lives were cut tragically short. today the city of angels mourning its fallen superstar. a sea of flowers, tears and heartbreak as new memorials for kobe bryant, his daughter gigi, who dreamed of playing at uconn, and the seven other loved ones who lost their lives with them, spread across the city and country. fans and friends saying good-bye on instagram an emotional lebron james breaking his silence overnight, sitting here trying to write something for this post, but every time i try, i begin crying again just thinking about you, niece gigi and friendship bond/brotherhood we had. my heart goes to vanessa and the kids i promise you, i will continue your legacy. shaquille o'neal also

remembering his former teammate. >> we were still the best duo ever created and that's never going to change. for me, this is going to hurt a long time. i really lost a brother. >> reporter: along with kobe and gigi, seven others are being remembered matt mauser lost his wife christina, mother of three who coached with bryant. >> i'm going to miss her i'm sorry. i'm sorry. >> reporter: the alto belly family lost three family members, 13-year-old alyssa, mother keri and john the longtime baseball coach at orange coast college they have two other children also on board payton chester, gianna and alyssa's teammate and her mother sarah, survived by her husband and two other children loved ones writing, sarah and payton were the lights of our family we will also remember the fun and love that we all share the bryant family has not yet made any public statements on the tragedy.

vanessa and kobe married in 2001, along with 13-year-old gianna, the couple had three other daughters. 17-year-old natalia, 3-year-old bianka, and 7-month-old capri. his daughters inspiring bryant to get involved in youth sports and build mamba academy. bryant told barstool sports why he commuted by air for years. >> i had to figure out a way where i could still train and focus on the craft but still not compromise family time >> reporter: kobe bryant, a family man and a superstar, in a lifetime full of highlights, his greatest achievements were always off the court this morning there is no official word as to when there will be a private funeral for kobe bryant or a public memorial we should also mention that tonight's game between the los angeles lakers and the los angeles clippers has been canceled so that both franchises have time to grieve.

the president defiant as always, firing back and calling bolton's book false as pressure is mounting for the senate to call witnesses in president trump's impeachment trial, another new explosive report overnight involving former national security adviser john bolton. according to "the new york times," bolton in an unpublished book manuscript writes he has concerns for the leaders of china and turkey bolton claims he took those concerns to attorney general william barr, and barr also saying he's too worried about the president esprivate conversations with the dictator. at the time the department of justice was conducting two major investigations into a private form and state-owned turkish bank today they fired back calling it a mischaracterization, adding if this is truly what mr. bolton has written it seems he's attributing to attorney general

barr his own current views, views with attorney general barr does not agree it comes as president trump's defense team spent most of money dismissing the initial allegations, that president trump told him he wants to continue freezing nearly $400 million in military aid to ukraine, in exchange for ukraine announcing investigation into joe biden and his son hunter. >> nothing in the bolton revelations, even if true, would rise to the level of an abuse of power or an impeachable offense. >> reporter: nbc news has not reviewed the draft manuscript, first reported by "the new york times," citing multiple people who reviewed it. at the white house monday president trump firmly and repeatedly denying that bolton account. >> i have not seen a manuscript but i can tell you nothing was ever said to john bolton >> reporter: still, democrats want bolton to testify but they will need at least four republicans to vote with them, with speculation swirling around a group of moderates who could

be persuaded to cross party lines. two republican senators, mitt romney and susan collins, signaling they're interested in hearing from bolton. >> it's increasingly apparent it would be important to hear from john bolton. >> the reporting on john bolton strengthens the case for witnesses and has prompted a number of conversations among my colleagues >> so, kristen, the white house presumably is getting ready for the possibility that bolton would testify. what are they doing? >> they sure are, savannah we're being told the white house is increasingly gearing up for the possibility john bolton could be subpoenaed to testify look, savannah, if that happens, the white house has been very clear, they're going to claim executive privilege. all that means is this ultimately will get kicked to the courts in the meantime, you can expect president trump and the white house to try to discredit bolton

they will also try to counterprogram today, in fact, president trump will be appearing next to prime minister benjamin netanyahu of israel and he says announcing a new middle east peace plan against the backdrop of all of this. >> a busy week for us, thank you. and we'll have live coverage of the impeachment trial starting at 1:00 today and now the breaking news, mysterious outbreak of coronavirus. the death toll in china has now topped 100 and this morning more than 100 people here in the united states are now being monitored for potential cases. nbc's janis mackey frayer is in nbc for us. >> good morning. people getting on flights will be tested for symptoms and when

they land in the u.s. will be quarantined 14 days. but there are still hundred of americans still stuck in wuhan and for them, there's no way out. this morning getting out of wuhan. americans stop at the epicenter of the virus outbreak. >> i'm more than a little concerned about what would happen >> reporter: a flight organized by the state department the only lifeline for u.s. consulate staff and a handful of other americans. >> the u.s. >> the u.s., yeah. see nana and papa. >> we're going to the airport. >> reporter: a tense drive to the airport for jacob wilson from louisiana, working at a tech start-up. worse, the drive back. he didn't get a call to board the flight. >> if there was a bigger plane, they could fit everybody i would definitely want to be on it >> reporter: the virus now spreading ran idly with more than 4,500 confirmed cases in

china, most in wuhan in the u.s. there are five confirmed cases, with 110 people being evaluated in 26 states the cdc dramatically expanding screenings, adding extra staff to 20 airports where passengers can be quarantined american health officials also advising travelers to avoid all nonessential trips to china because of the virus ground zero for the virus believed to be this market in wuhan that sold live animals and wildlife for consumption authorities confirming the virus can be transmitted from human to human through coughing, sneezing and other personal contact for the hundreds of americans left behind here, fear and uncertainty. wuhan sealed off, hospitals overwhelmed and short on supplies jacob's brother ben wanted to at least get his 7-year-old daughter jasmine to family in the u.s. but said u.s. officials here have offered little help, leadership or information. >> we don't know how long this

is going to last, and we have no assurances -- we have no idea right now. we're kind of lost >> reporter: as the crisis deepens here, china is becoming increasingly isolated. hong kong announced it will cut off rail service as well as most flights. japan and south korea now saying it will send planes to get its citizens out of wuhan. for the americans who are still stuck there at this point, the state department is saying nothing about more flights to come bring them home craig? >> janis, thank you for that big news from the tennis world and big news for this one -- an epic comeback at the australian open overnight for f. six-time champ roger federer >> one of his greatest escapes >> federer had to battle from behind for most of that match, including being down three points in the fourth set

have some sunshine heading out in palo alto and parts of the south bay. so seeing changes in the weather with rain moving in from the north. off-and-on light showers. but then as we go through the rest of the forecast we'll see this cold front bringing that rain weaken as it moves for areas south of the golden gate bridge. so we're looking at spotty rain chances mostly for the north bay and along the coast and the rest of the bay area will see sun and clouds. temperatures in the low 60s. a dry forecast for the rest of the week as our temperatures warm up through the weekend. mike, how are the roads moving? >> they are moving well but we have a slower drive through the south bay. gradual build for 101, 87 and 85. over here we have more unexpected slowing. this is northbound 680 at treat boulevard a crash in the middle lanes. counter commute a distraction for the southbound commute that slows from ignacio into the northbound direction. and in the bay bridge, a smoother flow and a crash at the

all of the stories of the people on that chopper. i talked to a lot of people who feel like it was an eye-opening moment to recognize how precious life is. of course, our 7:30 headline starts with that details emerging into the investigation of the helicopter crash that took the lives of bryant's young daughters and seven others there's new video that appears to show the helicopter 30 minutes before it crashed. ntsb investigators are asking the public for any photos of weather conditions at the time thinking fog and low clouds grounded police choppers in the area the helicopter does not have a black box or cockpit voice recorder an alabama community is picking up the pieces this morning after a tragic marina fire killed at least eight people seven other people were rescued from the water in scottsboro, taken to the hospital for treatment. fire officials say it could take several days to identify all of the victims. recovery crews are still searching through the debris

the cause of that fire is under investigation. a saudi hacking group is claiming responsibility this morning for hacking the social media accounts of the nfl and several of its teams hour mime, which promotes its own cybersecurity services, sat on twitter and hacked accounts including kansas city chiefs, green bay packers and chicago bears. the group wanted to show people, quote, everything is hackable. and now the mounting pressure on prince andrew after a weird move by a u.s. officer accusing of royal of allegedly not cooperating with the jeffrey epstein investigation. keir simmons has more. good morning. >> good morning. we're about to show you three sets of images taken across two decades that underscore the multiple questions for prince andrew and buckingham palace among questions this morning, why does prince andrew continue to enjoy such public support

from the queen prince andrew, seen with his mother the queen, smiling just days ago at the time the image seen as a sign of support from buckingham palace but it's relationship with a then 17-year-old american woman, photographed standing next to him in 2001, and his friendship with sex offender jeffrey epstein, pictures with the prince after leaving prison in 2010, that has u.s. authorities wanting to speak to him as part of an investigation into allegations of sex trafficking. >> the southern district of new york and the fbi have contacted prince andrew's attorneys and requested to interview prince andrew and to date prince andrew has provided zero cooperation. >> reporter: that statement made monday outside jeffrey epstein's former new york city apartment buckingham palace silent on the issue this morning prince andrew does have his own legal team epstein, who was accused of trafficking girls for high-profile men, took his own

life in a jail cell last year. in an exclusive interview last year, a young woman in the photo, virginia dufry, said prince andrew had sex with her when she was a teenager, after being sex trafficked by epstein. >> i couldn't believe it, even a royal was involved. >> prince andrew, of course, denies this ever happened. >> he denies it ever happened, and he's going to keep denying that it ever happened, but yhe knows the truth and i know the truth. >> reporter: prince andrew said he has no recollection of meeting dufry and denies any form of sexual contact with her. now the accusation of stonewalling after the prince said in a november bbc interview he might testify under oath. >> i'm like everybody else i would have to take orders and legal advice that there was before i was to do that sort of

thing but if push came to shove, and the advice was to do so, then i would be duty-bound to do so >> reporter: after that interview he stepped back from royal duties for the foreseeable future, repleting in a statement he was willing to help any law enforcement agency if required u.s. investigators now trying to hold him to that promise and to keep pursuing the force. >> jeffrey epstein couldn't have done what he did without the assistance of others, and i can assure you our investigation is moving forward. >> prince andrew said he would cooperate if required. so how does that work legally? do u.s. officials plan on requiring him to do so do they have the legal authority to compel him to come and talk to them? >> they can't extradite him to the u.s. he's a prince and member of the royal family he's entitled here to diplomatic protection, savannah a number of lawyers, legal experts we have spoken to here

good tuesday morning. right now at 7:56 we've seen a lot of clouds in the north bay. that is a live look in san rafael. also light rain coming down as we look at the radar. it is very spotty from areas near ukiah down to santa rosa. now moving into northern marin county. and we're going to see the rain chances throughout the morning for areas like san francisco, along the coast and northward. most of the bay area won't see that from the east bay to the south bay but we'll see some of the spotty showers moving through until about noon. the rest of the day is looking dry. the rest of the forecast is looking dry as we go through the end of the week we're going to see highs reaching the upper 60s and even for the weekend it will still be very pleasant. just slightly cooler for sunday into monday. in san francisco expect highs reaching into the upper 50s today. then 60s through the weekend.

a 92-year-old man makes his way past a crowd of tourists because he wants a picture at the gates of auschwitz his name is aaron crell. his story must be told >> i wouldn't believe it if i went through it. unbelievable >> reporter: when germany invaded poland in 1939, polish jews were herded into ghettos, a slave labor camp where crell and his prisoners made materials for the german war effort. >> you wanted to get rations and you had to work. we started working at the age of 8 or 10. food was very scarce sickness was very rampant. later it became so common that when you saw death, people on the street didn't even stop. just passed by >> reporter: crell guesses he was 11 or 12 when he and his family were sent there
