we have a lot of breaking news. we're going to start with the deadly coronavirus outbreak. overnight, the first flight to evacuate americans from wuhan, china, returned to the u.s. with plans to hold those folks in isolation. there were more cases being detected. health officials and major airlines are working desperately to contain the rapidly spreading virus, including banning flights from china. jani janis mackey frayer is in beijing. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. hundreds of americans are back in the u.s. they were screened in alaska. they're on their way to california. there are still hundreds more who are stuck in wuhan. here in china, a spike in the number of cases overnight, now nearing 6,000. there's growing anxiety around the world over how this virus is spreading. this morning, americans getting out of wuhan, touching down in alaska. more than 200 people facing quarantine for two weeks. >> in anchorage, the passengers were screened twice more and

approved to continue on to california by the cdc. >> reporter: fear of the mysterious coronavirus is spreading. british airways, the first international carrier to suspend all flights to the mainland. the u.s. also considering an all out ban on travel to and from china. >> this is a potentially very serious public health threat. this is a very fast-moving, constantly-changing situation. >> reporter: scientists are making some progress in duplicating the virus to come up with a treatment. with five confirmed cases in the u.s., and more than 100 people in 26 states still being watched for symptoms, hospitals are preparing. here in china, the growing number of infections fueling a rush to build hospitals. at least two to be ready within days. but hundreds of americans are still stuck in wuhan with no way out. priscilla dickey and her daughter turned away from the state department flight because of a passport problem. >> i've been outside maybe once or twice.

not a lot. i just kind of want to stay in and not worry about whether or not i'm going to get sick. >> reporter: this man in wisconsin unsure how to get his wife and daughters home. >> i'll look at the headlines and get scared and think, what have i done? my children are there. >> reporter: restrictions to contain the virus have paralyzed much of china. around beijing, villages are building roadblocks to keep v visitors out. and masks are selling out across asia. yet in wuhan the other night, a moment of determination. voices in the dark chanting encouragement, for people to be strong and keep going. scientists are racing to develop a vaccine, but it is timely, time-consu time-consuming, and very expensive. the best-case scenario is they'll have something within three months. the concern is the virus is spreading so rapidly.

in some cases, showing up in people who have never even visited china. savannah? >> janis, we saw last week you getting out of wuhan at the last minute. what's the mood? you're in beijing now. what is the mood and situation there on the ground? >> reporter: well, there are restrictions that are covering most of china now. more so it's the anxiety that seems to be taking hold. the streets in beijing are unusually quiet. there are temperature checks to get into grocery stores. food prices are rising. everyone is wearing masks. in a lot of cases, just staying indoors. i think it is hardest for parents. the kids are out of school indefinitely. they're bored. my son is 6. he misses his friends. he's wondering why we're not hugging anymore. a lot of people here are taking the necessary pru cautiecaution they're taking it seriously. everyone is hoping this critical period passes quickly. >> really hard times for everyone there. thank you very much.

also this morning, millions around the world continue to mourn the deaths of kobe bryant, his daughter, and the seven others who died in the tragic helicopter crash. in a moment, we'll share a powerful, new tributes from the likes of smagic johnson, shaquille o'neil, and lebron james. first, tom costello has new information. >> reporter: major news from the ntsb. the helicopter involved did not have a critical piece of safety equipment that may have helped the pilot avoid the steep hill. had he been just 30 feet higher, he might have avoided the ridge line that he then slammed into. this morning, the ntsb says kobe bryant's luxury helicopter was not eequipped with a terrain warning system. >> terrain, terrain, pull up, pull up. >> reporter: it is common on commercial aircraft and, for years, the ntsb has recommended it for large passenger helicopters. but the faa has not ordered the change. investigators say it may have

helped prevent this crash. >> certainly, it could have helped to provide information to the pilot on what terrain the pilot was flying in. >> reporter: the chopper didn't have black boxes, a cockpit voice or flight data recorder that could have provided critical information about why the pilot crashed. on tuesday, investigators removed pieces of the wreckage from this rugged hillside, as well as the final remains of the nine victims who lost their lives here. the coroner now identifies four of them, including kobe bryant and the pilot, 50-year-old ara zobayan. he was certified for visual and instrument flight rules. jacob chambers was one of his students. >> ara was the most capable pilot. he was -- there was nothing that he couldn't do. he was extremely safe all the time. safety first. >> reporter: so why was he

flying in potentially dangerous weather? as thick clouds and fog moved in sunday morning, trouble came fast. flight data indicates the chopper dropped 350 feet in just 6 seconds, making a quick left turn and accelerating, slamming into the hillside at 176 miles per hour. the question now, did zobayan become disoriented in the clouds, or was there a mechanical problem? jennifer is leading the ntsb investigation. do you have any credible information this helicopter was in distress before hitting the hill? >> we don't have credible information on that yet. >> reporter: nothing is ruled out at this point? >> nothing is ruled out. >> tom, people are going to be interested to hear the ntsb, the faa has recommended that safety technology, but the faa apparently not requiring it. how does that work out? >> reporter: well, this happens regularly. essentially, what happens is, the ntsb comes up with recommendations after a crash. it's up to the faa to do an analysis and determine whether that makes sense.

some of that is a cost benefit analysis. they have to determine whether it makes sense to require the industry, and the industry is going to have feedback, to require the industry, the operators, the helicopter owners, to put that kind of technology on board. it can cost $25,000, $40,000. sometimes, that can be a factor. we should make the point, medevac helicopters do come equipped with the terrain system. >> tom costello, thank you. we move to the emotional new tributes to all nine of the victims, including heartfelt remembrances of kobe bryant from his extended nba family. miguel almaguer is at the staples center in los angeles again for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. here at staples, where there is a sea of tributes, kobe bryant could have a statue next to magic johnson, kareem abdul he'lbe inducted into the hall of fame without a vote. the tributes on and off the court are heartbreaking. >> looks for help, and he finds

bryant. three ball. >> reporter: from a superstar used to standing ovations on the court -- >> all members and guests in the gallery rise for a moment of silence. >> reporter: -- a poignant moment of silence for kobe bryant inside the nation's capitol. as team s around the nba return to the court, emotions from bryant's friends, former teammates, and old rivals still raw. >> we're not going to be able to joke at his hall of fame ceremony. we're in the going to be able to say, ha, i got five and you got four. >> reporter: overnight, shaq surprising laker fans outside the staples center, leading the crowd in a kobe chant. >> kobe, kobe, kobe, kobe. >> reporter: another former laker, bryan shaw, melt bryant in italy when he was 10 years old. they'd play on three championship teams together. >> i admired him because of his work ethic and his will to win and not take shortcuts.

>> reporter: in la last night, lebron james attended his son's high school basketball game. kobe's jerseys in tribute to the fallen star. adored by fans and revered by foes, bryant, like magic johnson, transcended basketball, often with just his smile and charisma. >> you both called each other the greatest laker of all time. >> we both were committed to basketball. we were married to basketball. we were married to winning and playing the game the right way. >> reporter: in philadelphia, bryant's hometown, a moving tribute to all nine lives lost. an acknowledgment that while kobe bryant was the most famous, all of the victims were remarkable. at the college where john altobelli coached baseball, they paused for him, his daughter alyssa, and wife keri. >> people reaching out, you just can't say enough about it. >> reporter: the bond between father and son as strong as it was for bryant and his

daughters. >> my daughter plays every day, so i enjoy watching her develop. >> reporter: bryant's support for his girls striking a cord with so many. always the doting father to those he met. >> without hesitation, he said, i would have five more girls if i could. i'm a girl dad. >> reporter: after that story, girl dad began trending on twitter. fathers sharing photos with their daughters after another special tribute. >> i suppose it is the only small source of comfort for me, knowing he died doing what he loved the most, being a dad. being a girl dad. >> reporter: kobejordan, is so . there is a petition to make kobe bryant the new logo of the nba. a memorial and another tribute for bryant. >> miguel, thank you. we'll hear more from magic on the bond with kobe bryant in our next half hour. craig joins the table. we'll now look at impeachment. >> good morning. good morning to you, as well, guys.

the trial enters a new phase today. senators now all senators now allowed to pose questions to democratic prosecutors and the president's legal team this signals they do not yet have the votes to block witnesses. kristen welker joins us now from capitol hill kristen, good morning. >> reporter: craig, good morning to you so this entire impeachment trial, senators have been in a listen-only mode today, they will get to weigh in through written questions. it all comes amid this dramatic cliffhanger here in washington will witnesses be called in this trial? overnight, uncertainty looming over president trump's senate impeachment trial, with majority leader mitch mcconnell telling his gop colleagues on tuesday, as of now, he does not have the votes to block witnesses but later, many republicans saying they remain confident they will ultimately have the votes. still, the situation is fluid. it comes as fallout continues over former national security adviser john bolton, who

according to the "new york times," in a book manuscript says mr. trump told him he was withholding military aid to ukraine in exchange for investigating the bidens nbc news hasn't reviewed the manuscript democrats need four republican senators to vote with them to call witnesses. >> all we need is four, who rise to the occasion and say, we need to find out the truth. >> reporter: two republicans, mitt romney and susan collins, indicated they're leaning toward calling witnesses, including bolton a third republican, alaska's lisa murkowski suggesting she might vote yes. >> probably something that would be helpful to us. >> reporter: overnight, president trump tweeting, why didn't john bolton complain about this nonsense a long time ago when he was publicly terminated he said -- not that it matters -- nothing for their part, the president's lawyers arguing, senators should ignore bolton all together >> are you going to allow proceedings on impeachment to go

from a "new york times" report about someone that says what they hear is in a manuscript >> reporter: mr. trump's own former chief of staff, john kelly, said tuesday, i believe john bolton. though he did not mention bolton by name, the president spent the night lashing out at democrats over impeachment during a rally in new jersey. >> the congressional democrats are obsessed with demented hoaxes, crazy witch hunts, and deranged partisan crusades. >> reporter: the president's outside attorney, rudy giuliani, who is one of the key figures at the center of the ukraine controversy, says he doesn't believe bolton's claims about the president. telling cbs news -- >> the only conclusion i can come to, and it is a harsh one, and i feel very bad about it, he is a back stabber. >> reporter: so while that debate over witnesses goes on here at capitol hill, i'll tell you hoda senators have to write their questions down on these cards. take a look at this.

six lines each ultimately, these cards get submitted to chief justice john roberts, who will read them out loud to the house managers and also to the president's defense team this is a process that will last 16 hours over two days fascinating, craig back to you. >> kristen welker, fascinating indeed on the hill for us nbc news will have live coverage of the impeachment trial later today. now to a shocking development in the case we followed very closely. the connecticut man charged with murdering his estranged wife is in the hospital this morning after police say he attempted to take his own life. anne thompson is here with details on this. hey, good morning. >> good morning. fotis dulos had been under house arrest since he was charged with murder earlier this month. he was due back in court for a hearing where his bond could potentially have been revoked, sending him to jail. dulos never showed up. >> reporter: the bizarre saga of fotis dulos now centers on this new york city hospital

he was flown there tuesday after the connecticut murder suspect apparently tried to end his own life >> can the next unit in come >> reporter: after failing to appear in court, police found dulos unresponsive in a car inside the garage of his connecticut home. >> he had obvious signs of medical distress officers forced entry and immediately began to perform life-saving measures. >> reporter: authorities say the 52-year-old is now being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning. >> anything you want to say today? >> reporter: dulos' bitter divorce from his estranged wife jennifer has been in the national spotlight since she vanished last may after dropping off their children at school earlier this month, he was charged with jennifer's kidnapping and murder, even though her body has not been found. prosecutors claim foe stis dulo was lying in wait when jennifer got home that day in may authorities found his dna at her house. and say surveillance cameras caught him dumping bags of evidence that included her

clothing and zip ties. they believed they were used to restrain her fotis dulos pleaded not guilty to the charges, insisting in a "dateline" interview last september, he had no involvement. >> did you have anything to do with jennifer's disappearance? >> i did not, but i'd like to leave it at that >> this morning, dulos remains hospitalized the bond hearing is now scheduled for later today. police say dulos was alone in the house when he tried to take his life they are not saying if any note was left >> a lot of details still to uncover there. thank you. >> thank you, anne. 7:19 seems like a good time for a check of the weather for that, we turn to mr. roker hey, al. >> hey, good morning we're watching this storm system that's overperformed in parts of the midwest. kansas seeing upwards of 1.5 feet of snow heavier rain to the south. the system rolls through the gulf, bringing not really severe storms but still rain and heavy at times it moves off the florida coast tomorrow morning keeps going. then by friday, we're watching another system come along the southeast coast.

quake that struck in the waters in jamaica on tuesday. it prompted some evacuations in south florida. there have been no reports of casualties or severe damage so far. now to a dramatic scene in eastern siberia. fishermen were stranded on a giant ice flow it broke off from an island, emergency crews were called to rescue them. one small group at a time. the rescue operation lasted almost seven hours local authorities say fishermen ignored safety warnings about the dangers of being stranded on those ice flows. now some soft biggest names in basketball, like magic johnson and shaquille o'neal sharing their first thoughts on the sudden death of their friend kobe bryant. the basketball world still grieving about the shocking loss of one of the best who ever played the game. >> reporter: lakers legends and long-time friends, kobe bryant and magic johnson were bonded by purple and gold. >> you were his idol, that's something. >> we idolized each other. >> reporter: overnight, magic

going green. you guys are plant-based diets. >> we're here with chef amy chaplin, she is out with a new book "whole food cooking every day. good to see you. >> thank you >> what are the most misconceptions of a plant-based diets. >> people think you have to eat a lot of green leafy vegetables. you have to eat whole grain ingredients, bean, nut, seeds. >> so you get protein. >> protein, variety of different sources of nutrients >> these are things you want in your pantry if you think of going plant-based. how about a couple recipes what are we starting with? >> we have this deliciou cauliflower bake, which is a healthy take on shepherd's pie, sorted leafs and greens and kales. you can add in protein chicopk peas or lentils.
