morning. >> thank you very much, keira. one day before the super bowl, when two team goes head-to-head on the biggest stage in the world. the san francisco 49ers take on the kansas city chiefs. now, there's been a lot of glitz and glamour and parties here in miami, and we've been all in the middle of it. red carpet events. things like that. and there's also been a lot of bad weather this year. it is storming off and on and it looks like it might storm today. i think it will. but we hope that it doesn't. so the weather has been a little bit unpredictable. but what hasn't been unpredictable is the excitement. there is a family who is really excited here today, and we got a chance to talk to them. that's 49ers player solomon thomas' parents, that is martha and chris thomas, they came here, all the way from dallas, and now the families are saying, staying at the team hotel in downtown miami and solomon's father tells us why this moment, this super bowl, is close to the

family's heart. >> finding a way to represent everyone up and off the field and help those who have suffered what we've gone through and a compassionate and loving young man. >> this story is out there. thomas's sister ella took her life years ago, suffered from depression after being sexually assaulted and taking on this mission to let people know that there is help out, there so solomon is dedicating the super bowl to his sister, and he wants people to know, and the family wants people to know, that people can get help. this may seem like a downer, but it is not for the family, because they say they're going to use this platform, to help as many people as they can. so in the meantime, go niner, and we will have a little bit more later on in the show, in about 40 minutes, to let you know what the family is doing to try to help this issue. keira? >> great to know, cheryl,

people to know, welcome to the public, but violence and dangerous antics are not welcome at their big celebration. >> we want to celebrate and give high fives and people walking, and if outsiders come in and do negative stuff and burn stuff, we don't want that. we want good celebrations. >> and this is exactly the spot where clouds gathered and lots of police there, too. and the mayor, the police chief say they plan to keep the city safe tomorrow, it includes mobilizing officers and possibly re-routing muni buses. now to friends, family, and former lakers teammates all remembering kobe bryant at the arena where he inspired so many. last night, the lakers played their first game since sunday's helicopter crash that killed bryant, his daughter and seven other loved ones. before the game against the portland trailblazers, a touching tribute to bryant, who played for the nba for 20

witness, the critical senate vote in the impeachment trial of president trump, and what happens next. >> plus, a surprising admission from mark zuckerberg. why facebook's ceo says if he had to do it all over again, he would not built the company in silicon valley. the number of uninsured americans, rising. the cost of prescription drugs, rising. the threat to people with pre-existing conditions, rising. the good news, so is support for the one candidate who'll do something about it. as mayor, mike bloomberg helped

7:11 am
welcome back. 7:11 on your saturday morning. the first day of february, a live look outside, at the golden gate bridge, it looks beautiful there, a little bit of a pink and purple tinge. we have clouds and low fog though across the bay area today, some seasonably warm, or i should say unseasonably warm temperatures, will give way to cooler temperatures and winds tomorrow. a live look at the capital this morning, where a highly-anticipated vote yesterday evening did go just as expected. the senate voted to block new witnesses, evidence, and documents at president trump's impeachment trial.
7:12 am
that outcome was no surprise. after retiring gop senator lamar alexander of tennessee, one of four votes needed to cross party lines announced thursday that we oppose witnesses. alaska senator lisa murkowski's the lone holdout announced her no vote as senators convened. democrats are incensed. >> that this trial was not a real trial, it had no witnesses, no documents, it is a tragedy, on a very large scale. >> to prolong this is more about politics than it is about any policy decision. >> the 51-49 vote all but ensures president trump's acquittal. when senators cast their final vote on impeachment this coming week most likely on wednesday. it is 7:12. we have much more ahead on today in the bay, coming up, there is new hope for children with life-threatening peanut allergies. the first of its kind treatment just approved by the fda. it was developed right here in
7:13 am
the bay area. >> and we do have some areas of fog, a live look over walnut creek, another warm day today but i'm not just tracking today's weather, we have party planning for tomorrow and a closer look at that forecast coming up. we tried to get the politicians to deal with the problem. but they wouldn't.
7:14 am
so we took it to the voters and forced big tobacco to pay its share of healthcare costs. we fought oil companies for new clean air laws and closed a billion dollar corporate tax loophole to fund public schools. by going directly to the people we got results. that's not something you see a lot of from washington these days. i'm tom steyer and i approve this message. let's make change happen.
7:15 am
welcome back a live look outside at levi stadium, it sure looks gloomy out there, covered in clouds, vianey arana is coming soon, with a detail of the forecast. still unseasonably warm today. but it will cool down and get windy for super bowl sunday. for parents of children with a peanut allergy, every day life can be difficult but relief may soon be on the way. the food and drug administration has approved the first ever treatment for peanut allergies. was developed by a bay area company. it is a specially prepared
7:16 am
peanut powder, taken in daily amounts that are gradually increased over months and trains the body to better tolerate peanuts so an accidental bite is less likely to create a serious action or kill. a reminder, it is a treatment, not a cure. a surprising comment by mark zuckerberg, the facebook founder says if he were to start a new company from scratch, he wouldn't do it in silicon valley. he was speaking at the tech summit in salt lake city and while silicon valley helped him get capital and connect with the right people, it has become too much of a mono culture. zuckerberg has been under intense scrutiny the past few years because of security breaches and fake news on his social media site. now, to our special coverage, making it in the bay, focusing on the bay area housing crisis, a new study shows that local people are mostly trying

to stay in the area despite the high cost of rent. even though the cost of living is among the highest in the country, it is not enough to drive people away. >> with engineer, tech here in silicon valley. >> the bay area is very good for the job market for me. >> family and good schools also are big reasons people want to stay here. and the weather, i would say. let's check in with vianey arana with a look at the weekend forecast. >> yes, and you can't really beat california weather. you know, we got microclimates here but at least we can take a trip to the beach or the mountains or the sierras. >> if you don't like it here, you can drive a few miles. >> a few miles inland and a little warmer. >> exactly. >> let's take a look right now at some of the fog. a view of the bay area. we are getting some reports of some fog, and the majority of that fog though, is starting to develop mainly in the north bay, but we are going to keep that fog to i would say 9:00, 10:00 a.m. san francisco, you can see some
7:18 am
of the fog passing by. up to the north bay, santa rosa, down to about a half a mile, a quarter of a mile in napa, six miles in oakland, and seven miles in san francisco, and we're doing okay in san francisco, a couple of areas of patchy fog through there. about eight miles of visibility. once that fog kind of clears on out, our temperatures will be on the rise. but let's take a look at the current temperatures as you head out the door right now, in the 40s. down to the south bay, 45 in san jose. and a couple of 30s up to the north bay. and satellite radar, it is showing for the most part, we've got some areas that are clear, and then again, a couple of those areas, with the low clouds, but it is a much bigger picture. because we have a cold front that is going to drop down and that is going to impact tomorrow's forecast. before i get to that, though, the daytime highs for this afternoon, san jose, 66 degrees. in oakland, 63. and 61 in san francisco. and 58 for half moon bay and up
7:19 am
to the north bay, we're talking 67 degrees. so go out there and enjoy it. mostly cloudy, and it is pretty warm for where we're supposed to be, the average high is around 57, 58 and let's get right to that forecast, heading in super bowl sunday. because i mentioned that system, so you saw the satellite radar, with the cloud cover, just off to the north, and here it is, taking you to the timing of this, 6:30 a.m. for tomorrow and you can see we have an increase in the cloud cover, and notice the moisture that is coming in touch with the cold front. the good news is, it is not really going to impact us when it comes to the ridge, and some areas north of the golden gate bridge could see light drizzle but for the most part it is a dry cold front. as it begins to sweep down, we will have the increase in the cloud cover around 3:00 p.m. and kickoff around 3:30 and look what happens to the sierra, we're talking about snow headed in that direction, so if you're traveling to lake tahoe, we are expecting some snowfall, and for the most part though, we're going to remain dry, a little cloudy for tomorrow, but the
7:20 am
biggest impact from the cold front is going to be the wind. we've got a high wind watch that will take effect tomorrow. gusting anywhere upwards 50-plus miles an hour, and that means if you had a party planned for the outside, with a tent, you definitely want to make sure that you have it tied down. and a major cooldown for super bowl sunday for san francisco, down into the 50s, and it is also, for inland areas, it is a predicted high of 56 degrees tomorrow. so pretty big drop in the temperatures tomorrow and it is going to be very windy. back to you. >> that is a huge difference. 68 to 56. all right, vianey, thanks for warning us. it is 7:20 right now. still ahead on today in the bay, it is a story three years in the making. some bay area students finally getting to meet their hero. and we'll show you the moment they came face to face with civil rights icon ruby.
7:23 am
peninsula, a group of peninsula students are all smiles after meeting their hero. garvin thomas was alongside the children when it happened and he takes us there in this morning's bay area proud. >> in november we shared the story of debra and her fifth graders at martin elementary in south san francisco. their three-year effort to honor a civil rights icon was turning into a full-fledged moment, there were a lot of people paying attention to what they were doing, but one in particular they wanted to let know. at the sacramento state student union, saturday night, at the annual celebration, for the man who had the dream, debra carlino and her students have a plan. >> we are going to meet that little girl today and she has grown up into a beautiful woman. and we hope to meet her. >> that girl, now a woman, is the evening's keynote speaker, ruby bridges, whos a just five years old, desegregated new
7:24 am
orleans public schools in 1960. >> my first goal is that ruby bridges, the first goal, and we are thinking about what is the next step in the problem. >> what debra wants ruby to know is what she and her students at san francisco's martin elementary have been up to these past three years. that was then, studying the civil rights movement and hearing ruby's story, a student asked why she didn't have a day in her honor. and so they decided to give her one. >> we made this. >> and the first year, they convinced the school to hold a ruby bridges walk to school day, and the next year, debra's fifth graders convinced the district, and the following year's class, whole city. their two goals now, go national, and let ruby know about all of this. >> so when i call you over, you've got to hustle. >> which is what they hope to do tonight. >> this is the student table. >> so with the help of donors,
7:25 am
debra bought tables at the event. >> we will wear these pins. >> that wasn't all. students made sure every adult entry was wearing one of their ruby bridges pins. >> you can see everybody wearing the pins. >> oh, okay. >> what are you going to do with all of this? >> so by the time they got up the nerve to approach her, during a lull in the program, well, ruby bridges had heard their story. >> i think that is absolutely amazing. i'm all in awe. >> she even asked them up on stage to take a picture with her. it was a mission very much accomplished. >> after all this week, it's like, i mean everything is spinning in the room right now, it is so, i'm in awe, i mean i can't believe it. i cannot. >> now, actually, letting yruby know what they were doing is only part one of the plan.
7:26 am
the next part is they were able to invite her to come to martin elementary in south san francisco in person to meet the rest of the student body. and what we heard is after seeing our story in november, a donor stepped forward and offered to pay for the whole thing. garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. >> garvin, thanks. 7:26. we have much more ahead on today in the bay, coming up, we take you back live to miami, where cheryl hurd is standing by with a touching story about a 49ers players mission tomorrow beyond winning the lombardi trophy.
7:28 am
good morning, it is saturday, february 1st. 7:28. as we take a live look outside. looking in san jose, it looks like it is a little bit more beautiful than it was a few minutes ago, when we were looking, there was more cloud cover a little bit ago, and now we're seeing some glow from the sun rise. that's a nice way to start the month. thank you very much for joining
7:29 am
us. i'm kira klapper. vianey arana has a look at the microclimate forecast, and boy, yesterday, was stunning. >> yes, it was. we had some temperatures that managed to climb into the low 70s. it is comfortable. but this is palo alto. we are getting reports of some areas of fog. as expected. and up to the north bay. so just be careful, limited visibility, down to a quarter of a mile, a half mile in some area, but the day is about to be nice. once the fog clears out, an area of mostly clear skies, in the interior valley and a couple of clouds will linger for the bay and the coastline, look at the temperatures, still above normal, 66 degrees in san jose, 63 in oakland. 61 in san francisco and i do want to give you a look at tomorrow's super bowl sunday forecast, because it is going to be very important, people are planning parties, and if you have a tent that is planned for outside or the party outdoor, the winds are pretty gusty, 15, 30 miles an hour, and upwards of 30-plus, and right around kickoff, and the temperatures will drop down by 10 degrees,
7:30 am
and we will go over this again with the next chance of seeing some changes in the forecast. >> yes. -- i was sort of hoping yesterday's weather would stay, until tomorrow. >> yes, i know. >> but it is february. so it will be fitting. vianey, thanks. we are 32 hours away from super bowl liv. the 49ers taking on the kansas city chiefs tomorrow, in miami. 49ers faithful are taking over south florida. some are already carrying their lucky tickets. some waiting until the last minute tomorrow, hoping prices drop below $5,000. but there are two specialty fans who already have their ticks, they are parents of a 49er. and an nbc bay area cheryl hurd joins us live from miami to bring us their story, and cheryl, they are using this platform of the biggest game of the year for a really good cause. >> they are indeed. one day before the super bowl, when the two teams go head-to-head, on the biggest stage on the world, as you said,
7:31 am
keira, the san francisco 49ers take on the kansas city chiefs, and oh, yes, there is a lot of glitz and glamour here in miami. the parties. the red carpet. and we are all in the middle of it. and the weather has been a little bit unpredictable. we've got dumped on last night. with thunder and lightning. and a lot of rain. and today, well, i said it was unpredictable but it started sprinkle ling a few minutes ago so we think we might get a little rain here today. the weather has been unpredictable but what is predictable is the excitement here in miami. and the excitement has been really overwhelming for 49ers player solomon thomas, and his parents. now i caught up with his parent, chris and martha thomas, they made the trip here from dallas, and now families are staying at the team hotel in downtown miami, and solomon's father tellsus this moment is so close to the family's heart. and i also talked to the mother about why they are using this platform to help other people.
7:32 am
>> we miss her. and we're trying to help erase the stigma for people who talk about people who die by suicide, and as well as working with the american foundation of suicide prevention, to try to get help for people who need it. >> now, the story has been out there for a while, that thomas's sister ella, took her own life, a couple of years ago, and now, she suffered from depression, and it really came along after she was sexually assaulted and she didn't tell her parents, now solomon's family is taking on the platform, to let people know that there is help out there, and solomon is himself, is dedicating the super bowl to his sister. so it may seem like a downer, but it's not for this family, because they want people to know that there is help out there. so back here live, with a lot of super bowl hype, and the 49ers faithful is here, having a good

the 40s and 50s and some 60s here locally so they're not tracking rain for tomorrow. the system will move out just in time. bringing it back home, we have the satellite radar, you can see for the most part, we're clear, into some portions of the central valley of california but up to the north bay, that's where you see the low clouds hanging on tight and we have a cold front that is going to drop in. and as your daytime highs today, they are still above normal, which means we're running a few degrees warmer than what we're supposed to be for this time of the year. 66 degrees in san jose. predicted high in livermore 67. 66 in martinez. up to napa, 67. and in san francisco, it will take a little longer to clear in some areas when it comes to the cloud cover, but eventually, we will be in the low 60s. now, with that cold front moving in for tomorrow, what will happen, there is an increase in cloud cover, potential for areas of drizzle, mainly areas of the golden gate bridge, but there could still be a chance early on in the morning. the big concern is the winds, we have a high wind watch that will take effect tomorrow. and what to expect, we're
7:47 am
talking about gusty winds, and especially 20, 30 mile-an-hour gusts, upwards of 50 miles an hour, and that's going to bring, a concern, if you have a party expected outside, make sure you safely set up those tents and make sure everything is good to go. now, your bay area forecast, though, once those gusts pick up, the temperatures are also going to drop by as much as 10 degrees in some areas low 50s and stay dry locally. over the next seven days with the cold front sweeping in sunday, overnight into monday morning, we're going to get frosty conditions, dipping down into the 30s. for early monday morning. which means a pretty chilly start to our workweek, and again, tomorrow, that cloud cover, it is going to roll through, and the winds are going to pick up and the temperatures are going to drop. >> vianey, thanks. it is 7:47. still ahead on today in the bay, 75 years later. a survivor of the auschwitz concentration camp reflects on his liberation.
