quintana has more on the pentagon's new move. >> reporter: the west wing inn is a quarantine site, the on-base housing already being cordoned off. the health and human services will provide medical and security staff. this is one of the sites across the country to house and monitor about a thousand u.s. citizens still in wuhan, china and eventually brought back to the u.s. >> quarantine is what we do to apparently healthy people who might be incubating the disease. >> reporter: arthur ryangold from uc berkeley said one of the sites are being set up is because of a series of infections at a company in germany, like by someone who didn't have any symptoms. >> if you are only infectious when you have symptoms, then we can at least try and limit our aggressive efforts to those people who are sick, coughing, sneezing, whatever it is.

situation after that. back here locally, the search continues for the gunman who opened fire on a santa clara county sheriff's deputy. >> shots fired! >> that call came in around 10:30 on friday night. investigators say a vehicle approached a deputy on a stretch of uvas road in morgan hill and as the driver got close the driver turned off the car headlights and then someone shired several shots at the deputy. one hit his body camera possibly saving his life. hours later crews finally towed away the patrol car and reopened the road. fremont is now planning to plant boulders to stop cars from parking near the tesla plant. the city tagged rvs and cars parked there letting owners know they will be towed if they don't move on cato road in front of tesla and you could see it from 880 and now they will remove

existing parking and installing boulders to prevent parking in the future. you may remember a similar boulder installation was to keep the homeless off a san francisco street and it was met with controversy and the boulders were eventually removed. at 7:09, much more ahead on "today in the bay." live to des moines, iowa, to talk to chuck todd and get a preview of this week's "meet the press." plus closer to keck -- closer to kickoff of super bowl liv, we'll have more on the commercials you might see during today's game. tom: my mom always told me actions speak louder than words. she was a school teacher. my dad joined the navy and helped prosecute the nazis in nuremberg.

7:11 am
it's 7:11 and wb. we're joined by larry gerston and it is time for our chat with chuck todd from "meet the press." happy sunday for you. thanks for joining us as always. before we get into the impeachment trial which is top
7:12 am
of mind right now, you are in iowa. what will you be watching tomorrow night as the iowa caucuses kickoff really 2020 voting? >> well, for me it is sort of what are these voters here who are undecided or vas lating between a group of candidates all over the issue of trying to pick the right candidate to go up against donald trump, what do they do? does this anxiety led them to joe biden or disperse between joe biden and buttigieg. and bernie sanders seems to be in the tempered seat. he has the most devoted following and the biggest pool of supporters to pick from from four years ago and it would be surprising to see him finish lower than second. he seems to be a lock for the one of the top two spots. but you have an electorate who are worried about electability and a candidate whose premise is on the idea that he could beat
7:13 am
trump and that is former vice president joe biden. if he can't do well here, what does that say about his candidacy t candidacy -- for the rest of the way. i think there is pressure on joe biden to do well here because voters are looking for electability and biden is saying he is offering it. if he can't marry these two in iowa, where is he going to marry that. >> i had heard and seen there was a big rock party almost so to speak for bernie sanders last night when compared with the crowd who came out for biden so it is interesting to see how biden steps up. >> it is a big difference. sanders turnout and biden turnout, when you go to events that is for sure. >> chuck, mitch mcconnell shut down the impeachment trial. trump has piled the -- and the democrats are as divided as ever and the economy is humming. is this now trump's presidential election to lose? >> he's never been in a better
7:14 am
position to forecast a potential re-election than he is right now. a divided democratic party and divided on socialism versus capitalism versus a united republican party. has the upside. the fact that we're saying a guy with a 46% approval rating which is the high end and best position he's been in yet, he's in a weak position just strong comparatively to where he's been. but i do think this is certainly an opportunity for the president. i think he'll use this impeachment to try to kick off his re-election a bit. a little grievance in some ways, that is what has gotten him there and he's not going to change himself. i think the democrats have a challenge here. especially the congressional democrats. how do they continue to try to hold him accountable on the actions in office. but not look like all they care about is investigations. they were elected to deal with health care and climate change
7:15 am
and income inequality so nancy pelosi has to figure out how to start doing both in a post-impeachment world and so for me i'm curious to see how they walk that tight rope. >> all right. well, chuck, we appreciate your time. i couldn't help but notice your makeshift "meet the press" behind you. >> it is fun. >> we look forward to watching you tomorrow night. >> and more iowa to d.c. >> we'll stay locked in to see you in 45 minutes from now and we hope you will join chuck for the special edition of "meet the press" live from iowa. he'll have pete buttigieg ahead of the first caucus that we've been discussing plus an interview with senator lamar alexander, about to retire following his vote against witnesses in the impeachment trial. so be sure to tune in for "meet
7:16 am
the press" at 8:00 a.m. right after this newscast and we hope you stay here and larry will be back for our weekly political segment into the impeachment trial and what happens next. it sounds like we're looking toward wednesday for that vote but we'll talk to you for all of the latest. seen you soon, larry. turning back now to our coverage of super bowl liv, today's game will bring an avalanche of new commercials. aren't they the best. including political messages this is year and lgbtq representation. president donald trump and white house hopeful michael bloomberg will blitz viewers with with their political messages, that is the first time presidential candidates will air ads nationally at a super bowl. so that is interesting to see. and much more lgbtq representation like 49ers assistant coach katie sowers in this microsoft commercial. she's the first woman and openly gay coach in a super bowl. 49ers fans throughout the bay area hit the stores this weekend to grab their last-minute gear.
7:17 am
we take you to dick's sporting goods in morgan hill are where people poured in to hunt for anything red and gold. >> because i wanted to make sure all of my family is equipped with niner gear. >> the garoppolo stuff is gone, the bosa stuff is flying off the shelves and the kittle stuff. everything is flying off the shelf and i think it just shows how much energy the team brings this year. >> many of the faithful doing last-minute shopping were heading to super bowl parties and wanted to represent the niners. let's check in with vianey arana with a look at our sunday super bowl forecast. >> we have our red going on. >> and you have a good menu going on for your super bowl party. >> so i'll have to tribute one of my dishes to kris sanchez and she listed her jalapeno poppers on instagram and let's see if i could successfully perform. and we have enchiladas and
7:18 am
ordering pizza. >> and i was thinking of ditching my party for yours. >> come on over. we're kboing to have margaritas too. and this showcases two things, or three. the beautiful golden gate bridge and the cloud cover and also the wind starting to pick up around the coastline. that is today's story. a cold front sweeping through that will dip our temperatures down when it comes to our daytime highs. current as you head out of the door, we're in the 50s. san jose 52. 52 in palo alto. 53 in san francisco. livermore 49. concord 52. and take a look at satellite radar. you could see the cloud cover beginning to sweep down. we're certainly going to notice the possibility of maybe even getting a couple of areas of sprinkles through some areas but for the most part this is considered a dry cold front. so the biggest impact from this cold tront is going to be the winds. so right to your microclimate
7:19 am
highs for this toon. a windy afternoon, high of only 57 in san jose. that is a drop of about 10 degrees in some areas. 55 in oakland compared to yesterday. 54 in san francisco. palo alto 55. and there is a wind advisory that is already in effect and will remain through tomorrow. around the coast special winds will kick up with possible gusts up to 45 miles per hour. we're already starting to notice the wind withes picking up now. and then for the bay and valleys, talking 15 to 25 miles per hour gusting to 35 miles per hour and this will affect monday morning and an hour-by-hour look at are where wind speeds stand. right now the models are showing some of the strongest gusts but at around 2:00, half moon bay, 41-mile-per-hour gusts and san francisco 27 and down through san jose 29, livermore 22. the morgan hill area will be in the 30s when it comes to the wind speeds so 30-mile-per-hour plus in some areas and then fast forwarding the timeline and it stays gusty all evening look to
7:20 am
about 6:00. it isn't until really late tonight, i would say overnight, that the winds start to die down and then by tomorrow at about 9:00 a.m. is when we start to notice breezy conditions instead of windy conditions. but it is a windy day ahead. i want to show you the current weather here and also in miami, florida. where the super bowl is getting ready to kickoff. so santa clara, 52 degrees. winds about 10 miles per hour. but check out miami. 60 degrees. they were worried about the storms that did impact friday and saturday festivities even though i saw people partying in the rain. and cheryl hurd and abby fernandez is out there and also is raj. and one thing to point out, there is a cold front so overnight lows will dip down into the 30s which means frosty tor monday, tuesday and wednesday morning. kira. >> looks good. thank you so much. at 7:20, much more ahead on "today in the bay." saving horses from the
7:21 am
slaughterhouse. we'll take you to one of the largest horse sanctuaries in the country and introduce you to the woman who quietly made it all happen. ice? is this for real? not exactly...
7:22 am
thats bargain bliss setting in you're basking in the glow of organic produce at shockingly low prices i guess the choir isn't real? oh no, they're real... they shop here every sunday the number of uninsurising.ricans, rising. the threat to people with pre-existing conditions, rising. the good news, so is support for the one candidate who'll do something about it. as mayor, mike bloomberg helped expand coverage for seven hundred thousand people, including hundreds of thousands of kids. including hundreds of thousands of kids. as president, he'll lower drug costs and ensure everyone without coverage can get it.
7:23 am
that's a promise. and unlike himmike actually keeps his. i'm mike bloomberg and i approve this message. welcome back. one of the great things about living in the bay area is the abundance of beautiful open space. just a short drive in any direction. one los gatos woman is doing something very special with her piece of open space. saving horses lives. garvin thomas has her story in this morning's bay area craft. >> beautiful is a good word for what you're about to see. but it begins with then ugly truth. tens of thousands of unwanted horses are shipped out of the u.s. each year headed for slaughter. it is a fact that started alicia gaetz on a path to save the ones she could. just off highway 101 in san benito county, just behind he's gates is where you will find a lottery winner.
7:24 am
well, more like 500 of them. and the woman who gave them their prize. >> i have like 493 here right now but another ten are coming. but they're here. for the past six years, on this 4,000-acre ranch, alicia gaetz has been building one of, if not the largest horse sanctuary in the nation. though not by design. >> this just happened. it is definitely not in my plan. >> this is the property line between the front and the back. >> reporter: alicia said one of her daughters got into horses that she began to learn the fate of the tens of thousands of unwanted horses each year, shipped out of the country, bound for slaughter. >> so i'm like, oh, my gosh, this is what i have to do. i have to get involved in this and try to rescue some. >> reporter: so alicia began by funding other rescue efforts.
7:25 am
until one rescue in particular. >> it got to the last six and i think i said i'll take them. and that is what -- what did i just do. >> reporter: she started an amazing project. wild horses and ranch horses, jumping horses, just about any kind of horse you could find has found a forever home at freedom reigns, all with just one thing in common. >> what do they have in common? they were unwanted by somebody. >> reporter: even more remarkable is that alicia funds all of this on her own. she's not asking for any donations. just wishing everyone could find the problem they are passionate about addressing and get to work. >> i feel fortunate and this was what was supposed to happen and i am a firm believer in that, that things work the way they're going to. >> reporter: so i asked alicia if she's not interested in donations, what message did she
7:26 am
want to send to others and she said what she would really like to do now is raise the aawareness about the thub of horses that are sent to slaughter and right now just not enough people know what is happening. garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. >> thank you for getting the word out and for her tremendous work. it is 7:26. much more ahead on "today in the bay." back live to miami where cheryl hurd is standing by with the 49er fans who are determined to get last-minute tickets to the big game no matter the cost. plus a highly-anticipated poll next. and the reason why the des moines register pulled the poll ahead of the iowa caucus. to pay its share of healthcare costs. we fought oil companies for new clean air laws and closed a billion dollar corporate tax loophole to fund public schools. by going directly to the people we got results.

7:30 am
miami, 60 degrees. perfect for football weather. they were concerned about storms that swept through friday and overall our day is really windy. there is a wind advisory and i'll take you through the timing of the gusty conditions we're expecting coming up in about 15 minutes. >> we'll see you then. thanks so much. and it is finally game day after a week full of parties and galas and award shows we're now just eight hours on the nose away from the kickoff of super bowl liv. 49er faithful are flooding into miami and some are waiting to snag tickets to the game. at last check, what i saw, two tickets were more than $5,000. but our nbc bay area cheryl hurd is live in miami. you spoke to people willing to pay $6,000 or $7,000 and are still waiting. that seems so risky to me. >> reporter: that is right. people are willing to pay a lot of money for these tickets. welcome to super bowl sunday. yesterday when we were here it

behind us. despite the claims by both sides as the nation needed to find a way to turn down the vitriol and heal. trial opponents hardly moved to that end. each side seemed to delight with the gotcha questions and answers that had so little to do with the questions. simply put that was not the best moment for congress or for that matter the president. but the nature of the event assured that it would not be. >> and many people did expect a victory for the president because of the republican majority in the senate. mitch mcconnell's management of that majority and the two-thirds vote required for conviction and really their steadfastness in sticking together. why do you think the democrats even went through -- why did they even bother when you could predict the outcome. >> and so many people across the nation are asking that very question. why put everybody through this? a few reasons. first, for many democrats this
7:48 am
wasn't just about the president's alleged quid pro quo, trading ukrainian foreign aid for a promise to announce an investigation into bidens, democrats viewed many of the president's actions as illegal even before he was elected. the ukrainian affair thought democrats would clearly show the president's malevolence and they believed that when people saw the president's attitude toward the investigation and what they viewed as abuse and corruption, that would be a widespread support, well the majority of the support was there, but never support approaching huge margins. and third, and the related point, democrats believe that with the national stage there would be great public interest in the trial. there wasn't. in tact, merely twice as many people, kira, watched last sunday's grammy awards than any moment during the trial. how is that for a statement about a lot of things. >> i wish i could say it was a

surprise. i think people are just tired of all of this. do you think there was any surprised or what was the biggest surprise over the two weeks? >> for me, the biggest surprise was the way the president and his managers changed the rationale and at the beginning of the investigation the president denied anything happened. it was a perfect call. he said that of his july 25th conversation with president zelensky but a public summary of the call gave many the impression that the president was asked for that trade. well then the president defense turned to it, it happened so get over it. remember that is what chief of staff mick mulvaney said in a press conference when he declared these things happen all of the time in foreign policy. well, okay. then perhaps sensing doubts over the first two explanations, one of president trump's lawyers hard professor alan dershowitz changed the defense again when he said if the president is running for re-election and he sees his election as part of the

national interest, they are constitutional no matter what they are. and he can't be impeached. house managers shot back that with this broad definition, the president could do virtually anything and get away with it. so despite these democratic protests, public opinion never changed. in fact, the public pretty much seemed removed from the trial and like you said, we've had enough. >> yeah, i think so. and where do you think we go from here? >> three important questions. three important questions hit me as we emerge from this trial. short-term, what impact will the trial have on former vice president and presidential candidate joe biden? will support for biden fade away given the frequency with which the president's managers invoked his name. and media. what impacts will the trial and outcome have on the presidential election. will it serve as a major club for the republicans over the democratic candidates, whoever emerges, or over time will the public become angry with the president and third long-term what does this outcome say about
7:51 am
the future relations between the president and congress? well, congress will become a after thought or rubber stamp after the claims of executive power proclaimed by the president's management team. there is an awful lot at issue, an awful lot at issue as we emerge from this whole thing as the trump impeachment trial ends. whatever happens, it may be incredibly important in shaping the nation's future. we've lived through something and we don't really know what the next steps in this relationship will be. >> we really don't. and as always, it is job security for you. >> a political analyst employment act. >> we'll see you on sunday for the wrap up. larry, as always, thanks to you. we'll be back with a final look at weather. hope you stay with us. ice?
