>> mahomes brings the magic to miami. his fourth quarter heroics that led the chiefs to their first super bowl victory in half a century. plus the commercials of the night and the latin stunner of a halftime show. good monday morning. i'm frances rivera. >> and i'm cori coffin the final phase of president trump's impeachment trial gets under way today. on friday night the senate voted against hearing from any new witnesses or allowing new evidence, setting the stage for an all but assured acquittal on wednesday. but today house impeachment managers will forge ahead in their final arguments to try to convince senators to remove the president. meanwhile a new nbc/"wall street journal" poll shows the nation is still deeply divided over impeachment with 46% supporting his removal and 49% against it nbc's tracie potts joins us with the latest from washington, d.c. tracie, just a momentous week ahead. >> reporter: it's going to be a big one, cori because we've got today the closing arguments. tomorrow the state of the union. and wednesday what we expect
4:02 am
will be the end of this trial. looking at today, we're looking at four hours of closing statements from each side where even some republicans admit democrats proved their case, but the question is should the president be removed from office because of it. that's where we're seeing a big split. the president reacting to all of this in a pre-super bowl interview on fox news channel on what he expects to be the end of impeachment this week. >> mostly it was unfair to my family i mean my family suffered because of all of this, and many other families suffered also it was a very, very -- it's a very serious thing it should never happen to another president. >> i still think it's enormously important that the president was impeached because the country is moving away from its democratic ideals but i'm not letting the senators off the hook we're still going to go into the senate this week and make the case why this president needs to be removed
4:03 am
>> like those republicans in the senate, in our nbc/"wall street journal" poll, the majority of americans did think that the president was guilty of abuse of power and obstruction of congress but they disagreed like the senate on whether it should be members of congress to remove him from office or whether that's a decision for the voters let's turn now to the race to take on president trump in 2020 the democratic candidates have a huge day ahead of them more than 200,000 people are expected to weigh in during the iowa caucuses tonight, getting the first crack at determining who will be the democrats' nominee. the candidates making their final pitches to the public. we're joined now by nbc's priss ill la thompson in des moines. priscilla, what can you tell us about the momentum going into today? >> reporter: good morning. it is a big day here in iowa we're going to get our first look at what voters are thinking about this democratic field. and you talked a little bit
4:04 am
about impeachment earlier. a lot of those senators, democratic senators, had to get back to washington, d.c. today to work on that impeachment trial. but they're still going to have their organizers on the ground here knocking doors throughout the day. you've also got a few candidates that were able to stay in town, so tom steyer, joe biden, and also andrew yang and pete buttigieg, who are going to be hosting canvasses and kicking off canvasses and meeting with supporters throughout the day. then as i mentioned, those senators are going to be back tonight in iowa to sort of rally their supporters as the results start to come in >> we are going to beat donald trump. [ applause ] >> yes >> if the turnout is high, we're going to win >> the next president of the united states, not even he or she will be above the law, period >> i'm asking you to take this over the goal post for me. i'm asking you to score a touchdown for -- okay.
4:05 am
enough, enough >> it's no longer talking about how to win it's proving that we can do it, and that starts with you >> reporter: so there you see those candidates delivering their final pitches to iowans this weekend and keep in mind these candidates have spent so much time here, their staffers, their organizers working very hard on the ground and tonight is a really big night to see who goes into new hampshire with momentum and which campaigns might lose steam. >> priscilla, thank you. the trump administration has implemented new travel restrictions aimed at combating the deadly coronavirus new rules prohibit foreigners who have been to china in the last 14 days from entering the united states. this move comes as the number of cases continues to rise. so far more than 300 people have died and nearly 18,000 have been infected while most of those cases are in china, the u.s. coronavirus cases has risen as well to 11 with the most coming out of california
