diverse city and it's how i'll unite and lead this country. i'm mike bloomberg and i approve this message. epic failure in iowa as the first in the nation caucus is still undetermined there were questions of integrity in the tally of votes. could a new high-tech app be partially the blame? >> will he or won't he the president will face democratic coness who impeached him and will vote on articles after his state of the union. will he excoriate certain select members of congress? >> a fatal shooting on a college campus inside a freshman dorm. as police search for t, we have late e >> what did the accuser do to prompt the action?
4:01 am
>> and it was one of those special moments at a local basketball game that is now captured the hearts of america the video you have to see. "early today" starts right now good morning to you on this tuesday. i'm cori coffin. >> i'm dara brown. we begin with confusion at the iowa caucuses. none of candidates are able to officially declare victory just yet. >> when those results are announced, i have a good feeling we're going to be doing very, very well here in iowa >> so, listen, it is too close to call so i'm just going to tell you what i do know. >> you won [ cheers and applause >> we know there's delays, but we know one thing. we are punching above our weight >> state democratic party officials say they found inconsistencies in some of the reporting. they are now manually verifying the results. the party insists that there has not been any hack or intrusion into the information let's get the latest from nbc's
4:02 am
maura barrett. any idea when we'll get clarity on the situation >> reporter: hey there yes, so this is not exactly what we were expecting on this early tuesday morning here in iowa we heard from troy price, the chairman of the iowa democrats about two hours ago now. he told us that results will be coming later today but we don't exactly have a firm time line on that because essentially what happened here, the caucus chairs across the state that are running the iowa caucuses, they have the option to use a reporting app to report back the results of each of their sites some of them couldn't get the apps to work exactly well, so they're phoning in the results and there have been some discrepancies there in terms of how the results are matching up. they're going one by one manually counting to make sure they get the results right before they report them out. however, campaigns are business as usual the original plan was to finish up iowa, head to new hampshire, that's exactly what they're doing. they are sending that message to supporters of excitement we have some sound tonight here from iowa of candidates telling
4:03 am
supporters that. take a listen. >> we're going to walk out of here with our share of delegates. we don't know exactly what it is yet, but we feel good about where we are and, look, so it's on to hampshire. [ cheers and applause >> by all indications, we are going on to new hampshire victorious >> and now it is on to >> and now it is on to [ cheers and applause nevada [ cheers and applause south carolina [ cheers and applause california [ cheers and applause and onward to victory. >> reporter: there is a lot of optimism from these candidates here while they're speaking to supporters behind the scenes campaigns are understandably frustrated they don't have the actual firm results so they can tell who won, who was second, who was third. we are awaiting anxiously alongside the candidates i will say the candidates then also have until friday
4:04 am
there is a deadline of when they can ask the iowa democrats for a recount. so once we get those results, there might be some, some anxiety from these campaigns about the accuracy, understandably so, because it's taken so long to get some of these results. so we might see some campaigns await and decide to ask for that recount. we heard from some campaign staffers behind the scenes earlier saying there was a conference call with iowa democrats who they were supposed to get an update ton when they'll get results, some clarity on the situation and that is not what we got. it was a heated conversation lots of testiness and apparently the iowa democrats hung up and ended the call abruptly on this call so we're going to be waiting and hopefully getting some more updates on results soon. dara >> very interesting details. maura barrett, thank you very much >> of course the caucus chaos happening as president trump prepares to give his state of the union address tonight. this is the second time the president will be delivering it
4:05 am
while the subject of an impeachment trial. the senate braces for a vote tomorrow, there is much anticipation over what the president will say today tracie potts joins us with what to expect. what can we expect >> reporter: you can expect the president to talk about his accomplishments. the big unanswered question this morning is will he talk about impeachment at all and if so, how much. there doesn't seem to be much of an appetite for it lawmakers saying they're done with impeachment even though technically they are not because as you mention, he will be delivering this speech in the middle of a trial. today lawmakers continue their own speeches for and against finding the president guilty of these charges. the formal vote happening tomorrow, after the state of the union message. hours after the speech, we expect that vote to happen with an almost certain outcome to clear the president. now there seems to be some talk about whether to censure him and some lawmakers think they've got enough support to do that.
4:06 am
but as for the president's speech tonight, he has said that he will focus on his accomplishments, largely heavily on the economy, and positive direction for job numbers and growth in the economy. he may also mention foreign affairs with what he would certainly see his accomplishments with the u.s./mexico/canada trade agreement with iran, and with the paris climate agreement that he pulled out of what we do also expect tonight, some democrats aren't showing up again, this time at least three democrats have said they will boycott the president's speech corey? >> tracie potts in d.c. following the latest thank you, tracie. >> and as tracie mentioned, after months of investigation, the impeachment trial of president trump is inching closer to a conclusion closing arguments by democratic prosecutors and president's defenders as the senate likely moves toward an acquittal vote tomorrow here's nbc's hallie jackson. >> reporter: the final shot to
4:07 am
sway senators. >> how many falsehoods can we take >> reporter: for democrats an uphill climb, aiming their closing pitch at republicans who say they don't like that president trump pressured urdiales ukraine to investigate his political rival but won't impeach. >> if you find the house has proved its case and still vote to acquit, your name will be tied to his with a cord of steel and for all of history >> reporter: but the president's defenders argued democrats are overstepping >> these articles fail on their face as they do not meet the constitutional standard for impeachable offenses >> this is an effort to overturn the results of one election and to try to interfere in the coming election. that begins today in iowa. >> reporter: now the focus turns to wednesday's final vote. not so much a question of whether the president will be acquitted. that's all but certain given the senate's republican majority but how many votes
4:08 am
and the states the president won, west virginia joe manchin will side with republicans you are still undecided on this, so why >> sincerely undecided because there's a lot to be weighed here there are a lost of consequence here >> reporter: on superbowl sunday the president asked whether he can work with speaker pelosi >> i'd like to it's pretty hard when you think about it because it's been such, i use the word witch-hunt. i use the word hoax. >> halle, thank you. >> we turn to a terrifying scene in texas panic and blood shed on texas a&m university campus. a suspect opening fire in a dormitory killing two people nbc's sam brock has details. >> reporter: a campus shooting shattering the calm of a normal school day in commerce, texas. >> responding to a possible gunshot with an injured baby >> reporter: police confirming a 2-year-old child is one of the victims following gunfire at a freshman dorm.
4:09 am
>> officers responded and found two deceased adult females in a room >> reporter: the child now in stable condition authorities wouldn't comment on a possible motive and other question key questions are still unanswered why was the child in the dorm room, how is it related to the women and where is it now? law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation telling nbc news those involved in the shooting knew each other and have zeroed in on an apartment connected to the suspect. the campus shooting coming mere months after two young men were killed in october and a dozen people injured after a shooting at a non-sanctioned party 15 minutes from campus during homecoming weekend left hundreds scrambling to safety >> especially three months after the greenville incident, hard, you know >> reporter: now the violence hitting closer to home >> our hearts go out to everyone in the community >> reporter: in the heart of campus sam brock, nbc news. >> the north west has been slammed by a winter storm and
