"today in the bay" continues right now. a very good morning to you and thanks so much for join us now on this wednesday morning. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. of course that big story everyone is talking about across the world, many people who were in wuhan, china, now back here in the united states. here in the bay area. more than 300 of them all here this morning so certainly a big talker. >> we'll talk about the quarantine. right now we're talking about the cold temperatures across the bay area. >> yeah, it is going to be freezing in some spots as you get ready to head out of the door. some of the inland valleys below freezing this morning. elsewhere it is still very cold. we're stepping out of the door to 37 degrees in san jose. and it is 31 in san martin. in the north bay, we're hovering near freezing and as you head out in pleasant hill, 35 degrees. but at least upper 50s going into this afternoon. we'll talk more about this, but, mike, i see a tow truck and other things at the bay bridge.

>> fine how do you do at hov lanes blocked by a tow truck with a crash past the toll plaza so everybody who was gaining the benefit now jammed up in hov lanes pushed into the cash lanes making things tougher on the approach. fast track, fast track is the big advantage right now but no major injuries reported for that crash. but that is it. that will start to push toward the maze but right now it is okay. the rest of the bay is showing a smooth drive. we'll check out the east bay coming up. back to you. continuing with the breaking news we're fofing this morning. hundreds of americans under quarantine tor the coronavirus and from china are now here in the bay area. >> and they landed at travis air force base a few hours ago. those 300 people were desperate to get out of wuhan, from the epicenter around the world. >> let's talk about what is next for the passengers, pete. >> reporter: as far as what is next, one of the leans will refuel here at travis air force

base before heading to another base in san diego. but a second plane of passengers are going to remain here at the base and they'll be quarantined for some time. now i'll show viewers video of one of the planes landing and crews heading on to the plane. now the department of defense said those passengers will be quarantined for 14 days at the westwood inn hotel on the travis air force base. now government officials did tap travis air force base as one of four u.s. military bases on stand by quarantined coming from the affected area there in china. for safety purposes, they'll have a safety cordon established to separate residential housing on the base from those evacuees staying at that hotel here on the base. now solano county public health department did post on the facebook page that the risk of the virus spreading to the community around us is low but still a level of concern for folks in the area. >> it is 14 days, is that

enough? i mean, do they know enough about this to know exactly how long it takes to show up? >> for the safety of all of us here in this country, hopefully they're capable of containing that and keeping those people quarantined. >> reporter: now as things unfold here at travis air force base, there is new developments at mother military base in riverside where 195 americans arrived from china last week and there are reports that an infant part of the group is hospitalized with a fever. so we'll keep an eye on those developments. we know the cdc will hold a news conference today at 12:00 p.m. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> we'll continue to follow that. thanks, pete. and as for the latest numbers of the coronavirus. at least 24,000 people have now been infected in mainland china with nearly 500 deaths. four people in the bay area has been dying foiagnosed and two i clara and two?

san benito county. chp investigating an overnight freeway shooting. >> bob redell joins us. have investigators been able to unravel exactly what happened here? >> reporter: no, they're still trying to figure that part out. this happened in the mallory avenue on-ramp to northbound 880. it is about a hundred yards behind us here there in fremont. and the on-ramp did reopen in the past 30 to 45 minutes but this is what it looked like when the on-ramp was shut down by police. it started 3:00 this morning. two people in two different cars were caravanning up northbound 880 and on the on-ramp when they tell chp that two other vehicles started following them. and someone in one of the vehicles started shooting at them. on the on-ramp. police did find five shell casings on the on-ramp after the shooting. so these two men in these two vehicles were being shot at,

they took off and headed up northbound 880 and ended up at fremont fire station thub eig-- eight which is about four miles away and called 911. when law enforcement investigators arrived they found that one of the vehicles, a bmw in the video here had two bullet holes in the back. fortunately the driver of the vehicle was unhurt. and as i mentioned, chp still trying to figure out what led up to this shooting. >> well, right now, there what we got from them, they have no idea why they were shot. >> any indication of road rage? >> not that we could tell right now. >> so again the shots fired here on northbound 880 and fremont, no one was hurt. motive unknown. but as you could see behind me, traffic heading back on to the on-ramp, it is reopening in time for this wednesday morning commute. live here in fremont, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thanks for breaking that down for us. 6:06 thousand and more

breaking news this horning. this time out of turkey. where people are trapped in a snow. after a series of deadly avalanches. this morning a second avalanche slammed into a mun road killing at least eight rescue workers. another 20 people are believed to be buried there. a second avalanche happened in the van province near the border of iran. rescuers were searching for two people missing in an earlier avalanche and burying a snow clearing vehicle and a mini bus killing five people. the operator and seven passengers escaped alive. hundreds of emergency workers were on-site at the time of the second avalanche. 6:07 now. a live look at capitol hill where the senate impeachment trial is expected to wrap up this afternoon. with a likely vote to clear president trump. now this comes on the heels of last night's state of the union a speech said was designed to rally president trump's biggest supporters. tracie potts covering it all

warmer temperatures in the forecast coming up. and over here we're look at some build. we have a slower drive. 21 minutes from highway 4 to the back-up at the bay bridge. but moving smoothly because the hov lanes have cleared from an earlier crash. and good morning. very happy wednesday to you. usually i could do a pretty good job explaining these numbers to you and i can't explain why the nasdaq hit a new high. it was driven higher by tesla but i can't explain tesla gaining 13% again yesterday. that stock is on a tear. but the fundamentals are not behind it. and then you have e-bay. you got me on this one. the "wall street journal" reports the company that runs the new york stock exchange wants to buy e-bay based in san jose. this one is a true mystery. i can't figure out why. i can't explain why the parent company of nyse would want to buy e-bay. when i was a much younger reporter, fairly new to the

valley, e-bay bought skype for $2.5 billion. a little bit more than $3 billion in today's money. i couldn't figure out why. but they didn't say so because i figu figured they knew what they were doing and when they sold skype for less than they bought it for even e-bay admitted it was a huge mistake. i'll touch on the president's state of the union and he played up the economy. it is not doing as well. he talked about gdp growth of 7% and complained that obama's growth at 2% was embarrassing. chinese employees coming back to work rather after the lunar holiday they have to undergo quarantine because of the coronavirus. bloomberg the first to report that. the biggest iphone factory is about 300 miles from wuhan. a lot of employees live at the factory so it is not a huge

logistical problem. the factories are closed and will reopen february 10th. on a happier note, disney said more than 26 million households signed up for disney plus. i know jack is a huge fan of mandalorian. >> that and the baby yoda. we have it at our house. we have to keep the subscription going, i guess. thanks, scott. okay. so here is something to make sure old-fashioned crank call look pretty tame. an artist in berlin going viral for tricking google maps believing there was a traffic jam when there really wasn't one. do you see him there dragging nearly a hundred cell phones in a little wagon through a city street. and all of they're location services were turned on so that of course is sending data to google maps blorksi-- blocking streets and they said it helps make google maps work better

morning. maybe you want to add on some extra layers as you get ready to head out of the door. let's look at current temperatures right now. and in the north bay, we've sen it dropped down below freezing. also in the south county check out san martin. you're the coldest at 29 degrees. and we've seen it coming up and down as we look at the rest of the bay area. just above freezing in a few spots as napa and saint helena starting out at 33 degrees. a lot of these temperatures are colder than yesterday. anywhere now from about three to 11 degrees colder due to a calm wind. when we see those winds picking up and notice it was breezy yesterday when you headed out of the door, the breezy wind mixes it and makes it not as cold. it actually brings down the warmer air from aloft and so we're going to see the temperatures in the 30s and 40s. and then we also have what we call wind sheltered valleys where an other side you are blocked by hills and don't get

the wind and that is why temperatures fall lower. so we did have some breezy winds yesterday. now the winds have calmed down. but it is still showing that you could see a wide range in temperatures over a short distance. depending on the elevation. so now as we step out of the door this morning, the wind has calmed down and it is cold. so as you're walking to school, make sure that you have on quite a few extra layers. upper 30s in san jose. but reaching 60 by this afternoon. it is going to be a nice afternoon. 63 degrees in antioch for a high. and 57 today in san francisco. we're still missing out on all of the rain as it stayed to the north of the bay area. and our seven-day forecast remains dry. we will be warming up and it won't be as cold the next few mornings. and the afternoons will feel a lot nicer. almost 70 degrees by friday. and then cooling down by the end of the weekend. mike, you had a report of a wrong-way driver. >> i did. and i just now saw it disappear

from the chp report. they cleared that. no incidents to report here. but it was bascom at 880 just off the 280 interchange so that is a spot to expect much more traffic to be building. again that wrong-way driver has cleared from the chp incident report without incident. north 87 capital to kurtner and north 101 capitol toward tully and typical sports for the build to happen now. so looking at 6:22 now and a smooth flow of traffic there. southbound 880 does jam up from about 238 focusing on the approach toward a. street and past that things are clear. a crash reported at 92 but might have been farther back after slowing through the stretch. the san mateo bridge and dumbarton bridge starting to build the normal backup. back to you. >> 6:22 now. and does ellen have her eyes on the presidential election? >> it appears there is going to be a presidential election this

a little bit slower build for your commute. but southbound 880 we do have a crash at winston which is still blocking your slow lane. and i've seen traffic fluctuate coming down toward the area. the build really over here just out of san leandro toward hayward for southbound nimity toward the san mateo bridge and that is the focus about now. walnut creek interchange shows a gentle build off of highway 4 and more traffic through contra costa county and toward the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights are on and just now seeing the fast track lanes start to slow down. back to you. >> thank you, mike. breaking news this morning, 350 americans who were quarantined for weeks in the epicenter of the coronavirus in china are now here in the bay area. >> two planes loaded with people touched down at travis air force base just a couple of hours ago. "today in the bay" pete suratos was there when they arrived. pete, why were they brought to northern california? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. well it is one of the four military bases tapped by

government officials for specific situations like this when it comes to the coronavirus. but we did show you some video of the planes landing carying 350 passengers. one of the planes will refuel before heading to another base in san diego. a second plane there of passengers, they're going to remain on the base. according to the department of defense the passengers in the second plane will be quarantined here at the inn at the travis air force base. government officials tapped the base as one of four bases on stand-by for travelers who may need to be quarantined. for safety purposes there is a safety cordon established to separate the residents from the evacuees and the rick of the virus spreading to the community is low but the cdc will hold a news conference in tarld later today to take place at 12:00 p.m. reporting live, pete suratos,

for "today in the bay." >> pete, thank you. well let's talk more about the coronavirus. as for the latest numbers, more than 24,000 people worldwide have now been infected with nearly 500 deathed. four people in the bay area have been diagnosed. two in santa clara and two in san benito county. now being treated at ucsf. it is 6:35. san francisco pride parade is still months away but happening today, the battle is heating up over who should be allowed to take part. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in mountain view because the company is now front and center in this controversy going on. kris? >> reporter: hi there, laura. this is such a hot topic that the pride organizers moved the board meeting to a bigger location because they are expecting a much bigger crowd following that vote to ban google and the alameda county sheriff's department. a little back story here on this story, last month some pride members volunteered to ban google and the alameda county

sheriff from the parade this june. at issue is a push last year by current and former google employees to get pride to drop the silicon valley giant as a participant over the treatment of lgbtq over google products. they were not dropped there the parade last year and the issue carried forward to this year but the president of the pride board said the vote that happened last month was illegal. he is part of the president's statement. our legal heme has reviewed last week's vote by a small group of pride's 326 members and determined this measure is not binding. as such there is no ban in place at this time. this mall group is not representative of the larger pride community. now the eviction of the moms for housing was the impetuous to ban the alameda county sheriff's department from marching in the uniform in the parade this year as well. if the last half hour i confirmed that vote is also not legally binding.

tonight's pride board meeting is still at 7:00 but moved from the pride office in san francisco to the castro and the lgbtq center for the performing arts where they can accommodate a larger crowd again at 7:00 tonight. in mountain view, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks, kris. 6:37 now. monday's deadly shooting on a gray bound bus making some wonder if there is enough security for trains and buses. this happened on interstate 5 near bakersfield. one person died and five others were injured. passengers managed to disarm the shooter who is now in custody. but in general violence on buses is rare. critics say the tsa may focus too much on the attention of airports at the expense of bus depots and train stations. san francisco recent car-free makeover on market street is giving berkeley leaders a similar idea. the east bay times reports one council member is looking into banning cars along telegraph between dwight way and the cal

campus. supporters say it would make telegraph a more welcoming street. some neighbors fear that ban would bring more traffic to those side streets. >> and who has his eye on the traffic. >> i got you. that is me. thanks, putting me in that traffic box. >> and you stay there and tell us all about it. >> let's show you behind me. we're looking ahead toward telegraph and possible changes there. looking into the present and changes across the san mateo bridge. much more traffic slowing. your westbound commute. that is typical pattern but por traffic getting there thousand because the issue over there. southbound 880 just around jackson and winton that did clear off to the shoulder so now we have all lanes open and smoother flow with more traffic out of san leandro and no longer held you will there. more toward the dumbarton bridge and now a build toward the landing as folks come down toward facebook, hacker way and the transition on the bay front

we'll be windy on sunday as well as the dry weather continuing. slightly cooler reaching a low 60s for the valleys. it you plan to head to the pebble beach pro am we have cooler weather and sunshine. it is nice though. 59 degrees on friday. saturday will be 57 degrees. and holding steady on sunday but those winds will start to pick up. and then if you're planning to head to the chinese new year parade in san francisco, saturday is looking pretty good. just wear some extra layers. in the mid-50s and cooling down to 52 degrees. as we check out what is going on in napa this weekend, a lot of sunshine. and we'll go from the upper 50s on friday to 65 on saturday. then 62 degrees on sunday. heavenly looking nice this weekend. but notice the big drop in the temperatures. we're going from 52 degrees on friday to 31 on sunday. so a big cooldown. it is also going to be quite gusty in santa cruz milder

up. president trump is having a terrific week. culminating in today what we expect will be his acquittal in the senate. good morning. these are arguably some of the best days of president trump's presidency. the latest gallup poll shows his best approval rating ever. 49%. which means hor than half of americans still disapprove but the biggest numbers he's ever had. we expect acquittal on capitol hill today. we'll get to that in a moment. add to that the man president trump sees as his biggest competitor joe biden did poorly in the iowa caucus. it is still early days but put that one in the president's win column. the president talked up a second term in his state of the union last thiet. praised the american economy. got big cheers from some of the very same senators putting him on trial. >> consumer confidence has just reached amazing new highs.

numbers. at 32 degrees in san martin. it is freezing there. near freezing temperatures in the north bay. and it is 37 degrees in san jose and in half moon bay. as you get ready to head out, maybe heading to the b.a.r.t. station. a warmer coat needed. low 40s to start and then after the day goes along it had will feel nicer in the seven-day forecast it is already up at the bottom screen. as we check out high temperatures for today, napa reaching 64. also 64 in clear lake. and in palo alto as well as oakland, expect a high of 62 degrees. and 60 in san jose. there has been a lot of rain across the region but just not here in the bay area. so it is steers well to the north and see it arching up and around and blocked by high pressure so it is steering it away from the bay area. and it is been in place for quite a while now. it is going to start to move off towards the west just a bit heading toward the end of the week. but it will allow our temperatures to warm up.

by sunday we'll see some changes here as a quick-moving low pressure system moves across parts of the sierra but it is it is pretty dry. it will bring in some cooler temperatures. along with some gusty winds. so our warming trend continues through the end of the week and once the low drops in we'll cool off a few degrees. sunday doesn't look too bad but it will be windy and slightly cooler and then early next week we have some mid-60s in the inland forecast. mike, you were saying so far the chute is moving pretty well smoo that is right. and slow in spots but better than we could have. earlier crashed that cleared, 880 moving smooth hi and southbound the same but heading toward hayward and union city with a crash around highway 92. once that cleared, everything else is good. west 24 does show slowing. the earlier disabled vehicle in the center divide so a distraction approaching the caldecott. maybe another crash in a slower

drive just developing so that is a spot i'm focusing on. and watching traffic across the san mateo and the dumbarton bridges. 880 as we said has cleared up from an earlier crash to things are moving smoothly in san leandro. and fremont just starting to build toward the south bay. northbound pushed through the south bay and that is one area we'll watch. the earlier crash off the shoulder at 680 and 84 hasn't been a problem. we'll check with waze. the view northbound 101 at the 87 merge we do have an unnamed wazer who will get a shutout on tv make sure you report to nbc bay area wazers. back to you. >> and there you go. and you get the shoutouts. 8:52 now. twitter launching a fight against deep fakes. they will start labelling and removing doctored or man ip lated videos designed to mislead

door this morning, there are more top stories to track for you. >> and new overnight for you, police in fremont investigating a freeway shooting on northbound 880 around 3:00 a.m. on mallory avenue on-ramp and this is video of the car hit and the car stopped at the fremont fire station. they found shell casings near the scene but no one was hurt smoo a deadly stabbing trial scheduled to get underway. john lee cowell is accrued of killing nia wilson and injuring her sister in july of 2018. investigators say the attack was unprovoked. the case is faced long delays in large part over questions about cowell's competency. the judge recently ruled he is indeed fit to stand trial. happening today, more than 100 uber and lyft drivers across the state are expected to file a lawsuit. according to "the chronicle," they're fighting to be considered employees and say they're entitled to back pay and
