wednesday, february 5th, 2020. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning, everybody. welcome to "today." nice to have you with us on a wednesday morning. >> you don't look like someone who left d.c. at 11:00, hopped in a car, drove back to new york. >> well, i parked right there on the plaza. i hope they don't give me a ticket. it was a fascinating night in washington. that's where we'll begin. the president using his third state of the union address, to make his case for re-election. but the bitterness and division in washington was on full display, as well. the night began with what appeared to be the president snubbing the house speaker's offer of a handshake. then, not to be outdone, nancy pelosi, dramatically tearing up her copy of the speech as it ended last night.

>> to add to the tension, the address was delivered on the eve of the impeachment trial's conclusion. that's 20 days after the trial began. and we have the mess still being sorted out in iowa. yes, the votes are still being counted there. mayor pete buttigieg and bernie sanders have the early lead. we start with the state of the union. kristen welker is on-duty. good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah and hoda. good morning to both of you. president trump is expected to be acquitted later today in the senate impeachment trial. he didn't mention the word impeachment in his speech, but it loomed over the entire chamber, setting up a dramatic backdrop for a night that had plenty of surprises, made-for-tv moments and partisan tensions like we have never seen before. president trump, delivering a state of the union address, to a bitterly divided congress and nation. >> the state of our union is stronger than ever before. >> reporter: but overshadowing the night, the president's own

impeachment trial and the palpable tensions between him and house speaker nancy pelosi. even before the speech began, the president appearing to snub pelosi's extended hand. pelosi then, omitting the customary words, high privilege and distinct honor, words used by the speaker to introduce the president. instead saying -- >> members of congress, the president of the united states. >> reporter: after the nearly 90-minute speech, pelosi stunned onlookers in the chamber and around the country by tearing up the president's remarks behind his back. when asked why she tore up the president's speech, she was defiant, calling it a manifesto of mistruths. >> it was disgusting. i was sitting 50 feet away from her, and it made me angry. >> reporter: the white house, accusing pelosi of overshadowing the president's invited guests. tweeting, that's her legacy. the president's speech, at times, sounding like a campaign

advanced lung cancer, with the presidential medal of freedom. the first lady awarding it to him in the gallery, an unprecedented move. >> you will be receiving our country's highest civilian honor, the presidential medal of freedom. >> reporter: and reunited a ft. bragg soldier serving in afghanistan with his wife and children. that poignant moment bringing the entire chamber to its feet. it was a remarkable night. now, that all-important senate vote set to take place in a few hours. and again, the president is all but certain to be acquitted. white house officials say the icing on the cake would be if they can hold every republican vote and peel off a few democrats. now, based on conversations with a number of white house officials, they're looking to likely hold an event later today, that would give president trump a chance to thank those who stood by him to try to turn the page and capitalize on this all-but certain political victory, as he heads out on to the campaign trial. >> kristen welker starting us off. thank you.

we're joined by claire mccaskill, and rich lowry, editor of "the national review." was this the most acrimonious setting for a state of the union that y'all can remember on both sides? >> by far. i believe in grace notes. i think the president should have shook her hand. but ripping up the speech, is a petty gesture and speaks to a deep frustration. but she should have known when she started impeaching him, that this day would come. he would be acquitted or on the verge of acquittal, and he would be making a case for himself. >> did you like the display of ripping up the speech? >> not my favorite. but it was a speech full of lies. i am stunned that we have an american president that has no respect for honesty whatsoever. so, that was hard to listen to. and we've never had a president

that goes out of his way to divide us, to throw gasoline on the culture wars in this country, instead of trying to find a way to unite everyone. that's what state of the unions have always been in america. but not under donald trump. >> there was a lot for the base in this speech. i guess that's his re-election strategy. >> i think it was mixed. and people with a deep distaste for donald trump would miss it. there were the cultural issues for his base, abortion, immigration, guns. but a lot of the speech -- >> rush limbaugh. >> i love rush. but only conservatives are going to love that gesture. but there's a lot in the speech that was meant to take the edge off his image. touting feel-good stories from the gallery. and touting initiatives that most people would think are completely reasonable. planting trees. going to mars. it's my belief that if all he did was give speeches like this, he'd be above 50% approval and a clear favorite for re-election.

you. much of the attention has been focused on the democrats' debacle and for good reason. but as the dust begins to settle, it's clear that pete buttigieg, the 38-year-old former mayor of south bend, indiana, that a year agee had no name recognition, had a strong performance here. and it's putting pressure on all of the democratic candidates to deliver next week in new hampshire. with the democratic candidates crisscrossing new hampshire, is final tally of iowa is up in the air. the uncertainty and confusion preventing any of the candidates from claiming an all-important victory. pete buttigieg and bernie sanders, neck and neck for first place, are touting the results. >> a campaign that some said should have no business even making this attempt, has taken its place at the front of this race. >> we received more votes on the first and second round than any

bloomberg. the former new york city mayor, aides tell nbc news, will double his advertising in other key states. with eyes on super tuesday, less than a month away. and a surprising editorial from "the boston globe," that has a lot of readers in neighboring new hampshire. kill the tradition. new hampshire and iowa should not vote first. they describe it as an antiquated system that gives outside influence to choosing presidents on two states that resemble 19th century america than the america of today. a conversation a lot of folks are having today. >> a lot of fuel for it on that conversation, in light of what happened in iowa. peter, thank you. we're joined by claire mccaskill and rich lowry again. claire, what are democrats saying about this debacle in iowa? >> i think most democrats are coming to realize that caucuses are terrible for participation. our party is the one that wants

to expand voter participation. the republican party is the one that is trying to shrink it. why do we have a caucus when we have a limited ability to participate. you're seeing the death of caucuses for the democratic party. >> it seems like a gift to republicans for this disarray to be unfolding in iowa, and they're certainly seeming to make the most of it. >> well, republicans have been mocking it i've mocked it myself. you get down to it, this is terrible for democracy and the idea that all of the blood and the sweat and the tears of candidates, all their supporters, to go for not because of this idiotic debacle is really a disgrace >> the president was saying the other day, i think he tweeted, he's all for iowa and going first and he's all-in for iowa going first. do you think that on the republican side, the caucus should go by the wayside >> i have had mixed feelings about iowa it's amazing piece of democracy. people gathering in these gyms but anytime the race is close, you've been reminded of the

fact, we don't know how many votes until this time -- this is the first time we knew who people voted for in iowa maybe iowa should keep going first, but do a primary. >> let's see where the race stands right now looks like sanders and buttigieg are at the top with some percentage of the vote in iowa where does this go from here biden underperformed he looks like he's going to be in fourth place. he is counting on south carolina to pull him through february how do you see it playing out? >> buttigieg really unfortunately missed the opportunity because of the screw-up in iowa - >> you think he was robbed >> yeah. this is remarkable that he is even contesting for the lead in iowa this is somebody that nobody heard of less than a year ago. and he's done a remarkable job of organizing the campaign and getting the message out. so, the question is, can he replicate that in these primaries that are now going to come fast and furious over the next three or four weeks we'll see. >> does mayor bloomberg have a

base outside of sacramento with one plane continuing to miramar near san diego but the overnight flights are just the beginning of a long road ahead for them. this morning, two flights carrying american evacuees from china, landing at two u.s. military bases, where the passengers will spend 14 days in isolation, quarantined in rooms similar to this one, while health officials monitor their conditions and test them for the dangerous coronavirus. the illness, killing hundreds in china and affecting hundreds of people here in the u.s., including a california man, visiting this hospital, testing positive in order to self-isolate at home the hospital employees he came into contact with, now also quarantined >> because this is a new disease that we don't know everything about yet, we're being cautious and aggressive in terms of close contacts >> reporter: the latest evacuees boarding a chartered flight. >> this is going to be our

flight for the next ten hours on the way to california. we'll see where we arrive. >> reporter: passengers wearing face masks and separated from the flight crew, making a desperate escape, almost a week after these 195 americans landed in california. one of those passengers, an infant, is now in the hospital, after developing a fever officials say they're testing the baby for the virus, out of an abundance of caution. on this cruise ship in japan, health officials are confirming, ten people, including one american, have been diagnosed with coronavirus and with more persons returning to the u.s., from the epicenter of the outbreak, there's fears the numbers of infected people in this country will rise. in addition to the serious health worries, there's also financial ones a number of major u.s. companies are closing thousands of stores across china, including apple and mcdonald's but the white house says the overall economic impact should

be minor craig? >> miguel, thank you we move to the powerful winter storm making its way across the country it's a dangerous mix of snow and ice and rain and it's already creating a travel nightmare mr. roker, how are we looking? >> this is a crazy storm it has a winter side and a severe side. look at the winter side. this is texas. leonard, texas and it's a real mess i-40 for a while was closed. look now on the maps, to give you an idea. we're talking 67 million people at risk for winter weather 24 million people at risk right now for flash flooding, as you push down into parts of the southeast. we go over to the effects today. we have snow, ice, rain, and we've got a risk of severe weather down 12 million people through the lower gulf coast damaging winds, tornadoes possible, up to one to two inches of rain possible for the plains we're looking at a quarter of an inch to half an inch of ice. and snowfall amounts, anywhere from 2 to 6 inches, from texas to ohio.

at precisely what went wrong in iowa's democratic caucuses >> this new app that was supposed to simplify the reporting of results -- well, that didn't happen it complicated things. investigative reporter cynthia mcfadden has been looking into this one all week. what did you find? >> good morning, team. with questions mounted about how democrats conducted the caucuses, all eyes are on the app used to collect the data and the company that made it this as iowa democratic party published partial results with the majority of the results expected by 5:00 p.m. today. >> thank you, concord. >> reporter: this morning, as democratic candidates stump in new hampshire, questions swirling about what went wrong during iowa's democratic caucus. >> we have worked with cyber security experts, nationally-renowned cyber security experts to test this app. we found an irregularity as the results came in. >> reporter: the irregularity linked to this app made by shadow inc., a for-profit

development company based in washington, d.c., describing its itself as creating a permanent advantage for progressive campaigns and causes through technology shadow now issuing an apology saying they sincerely regret the delay in the reporting of the results of last night's iowa caucuses the company, which was founded by former hillary clinton staffers, was paid $60,000 to improve the reporting of caucus results. it was launched last year by a democratic nonprofit called acronym. its ceo was married to a senior adviser of pete buttigieg, which the campaign has acknowledged. there's been no suggestion of any wrongdoing or evidence that the app was hacked precinct chairs were supposed to record and send results to the iowa democratic party via the app. but many had trouble downloading and using it the bigger question now, when did officials know the app had problems

an e-mail chain provided to nbc news, showed that precinct captains and caucus organizers in the iowa city area knew o problems with the app as early as monday morning. 9:13 a.m., a precinct chair writes, i gave up on the app a few minutes later at 9:29, another jokes, just don't submit your results by 10:00 p.m., some precinct chairs had abandoned the app altogether and resorted to a hot line to call in results. but there were problems. some callers were being put on hold for hours >> i couldn't get through. i tried a number of times. >> i have no idea what's going on >> reporter: others were asked to text photos of the results. >> they wanted us to take -- wanted me to take a picture of my calculation sheet and how i arrived at the figures that we had and send it to the iowa democratic party >> reporter: security experts tell nbc news, they're alarmed that the party had refused to reveal who made the app in the lead-up to the caucus.

even worse, that the party told the chairs to download it to their unsecured personal phones. chad wolf, the director of homeland security, had this to say. >> our cyber security and our security agency has offered to test that app from a hacking perspective. they declined. >> reporter: the iowa democratic chairman, troy price, appearing to deny that >> i have no knowledge of the department of homeland security making that offer to us. >> 15 more for warren. >> reporter: now, the iowa democratic party left to pick up the pieces of what was supposed to be the state's biggest night. >> okay. looking ahead, nevada has a caucus, too, and evidently had contracted with the same firm but is not going to use that >> nevada paid its money to the shadow company and they announced yesterday they weren't going to be using the app or the company and are evaluating those options

liver, and the lung. five-year survival for stage four, on average, is roughly 27%. it is worth noting it varies greatly with people. and modern treatments, they are able to improve longevity these days >> she had dealt with this cancer before. presumably was being screened and having the regular screenings can a cappser be so aggressive and quick-moving that it can basically come up in between screenings like that >> you know what generally, savannah, the risk of recurrence is related to a couple of things it's related to the original stage of the tumor it's related to how the tumor was treated. probably, or most importantly, it is related to the biology of the tumor. we talk about the hormone status of the tumor, if it's estrogen or projester positive or negative certain types are more aggressive early on, like triple negative they're more than likely to recur in the first five years or the three years. >> it went to her bone

>> they are not the same they both light up a different fire for me. you know >> reporter: thompson grew up in teaneck, new jersey. as a child, she was passionate about dance, until one day a chance encounter changed her life >> i was walking with my mom to the dance room and we passed the cafeteria. it had a fencing demonstration going on my high school coach convinced my mom that fencing was a great way to get a college scholarship. that was it. >> reporter: that was it >> that was it. >> reporter: way to go mom thompson signed up for fencing classes a few months later and in 2008, she was recruited to fence for temple university fencing in college that wasn't enough you decided, oh, i'd like to be a doctor >> yeah. i had always wanted to be a doctor since i was 3 or 4 years old. >> reporter: after graduating with honors in 2012, thompson went on to rutgers medical school she never gave up fencing competitively, becoming a u.s.
