out to the gym or work or take the kids to school, it is a busy morning and start out cool and warming you for a nice day. a live look in san jose. before the sunrise we see a clear sky and sunshine today. temperatures going from 42 degrees to 65. notice that normally up to 61. so above that today. feeling very spring-like and we'll talk what is ahead for the weekend coming up. and mike is tracking two minor crashes. i shouldn't say minor because if you are involved it is major. and the traffic impact is minor. and the south bay is moving nicely. it is friday and we don't have a big commute. it is later build and more gradual. 880 south at 92, a crash should be cleared to the shoulder. we see minor slowing at san leandro toward hayward. on the peninsula side, university avenue, now this is not between the dumbarton bridge and 101, just past 101 by the hotel making on to university and getting on toward the rest of palo alto, that crash might

affect the intersection so a note of folks traveling toward those businesses. we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza as well. a great drive through contra costa county and through the maze and once you get here this light, light back-up is improving over the last 20 minutes so that is great. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. it is 6:02 now. new developments in the deadly coronavirus outbreak now bringing things to a standstill in some parts of the world. latest numbers from overnight. the number of dead now over 600 and infections have started to soar around the world. over 31,000 people infected. eight people in the u.s. have the virus. in the meantime two more u.s. state department chartered evacuation flights have left wuhan, the epicenter for the illness. one of the planes landed in the bay area overnight. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is following it all for us with the latest developments. >> reporter: there are so many travel restrictions and concerns that are global but here at home we're worried about the chinese

new year parade and so many people love to kbo to san francisco and enjoy that as a family tradition but some folks may stay away from saturday's big celebration with the coronavirus. so we had a crew in chinatown during the lunch hour yesterday. look at how quiet. shop owners say it is slower than unusual for had this time of the year. there are no cases confirmed in san francisco right thousand, health leaders say if we are washing our hands as we should be doing the flu season we should be at very low risk of getting sick. san francisco supervisor and shopkeepers are hoping people will put those fears aside. >> it is been very quiet. so we're hoping that on saturday when the parade takes place it will be packed. >> i urge all people that have come year after year to continue coming to this parade on saturday and have the fun that they always have. >> reporter: another state department flight from china

landed at travis air force base overnight touching down to refuel, it will then continue on to san antonio, texas, where where folks will be quarantined for two weeks. this is video of one of the first flights to arrive at travis this week. 178 people are now under quarantine at travis air force base in fairfield getting health checks twice a day for the next two weeks, the time it could take for the symptoms to show up. the hanum family is one of them after visiting hubei province in china. >> they check us twice a dand and they take our temperature. >> this is kind of interesting. a state lab in richmond will be a key defense in the the fight against coronavirus. starting next week the lab will test samples within two days' time instead of the turn around of 7 days the cdc lab in atlanta takes. the flights between china and sfo will drastically be reduced next week and perhaps for as long as six weeks after that. that includes american airlines. so chances are if you talk to

an election year and now with this tone in washington what about all of those potential laws that could help families? will they get off the desk? we'll find out. this fute -- feud boiled over at the national prayer breakfast and when the president and nancy pelosi spoke after the president was acquitted in the impeachment trial. >> it was evil. it was corrupt. it was dirty cops. it was all [ bleep ]. >> the president using the congress of the united states as a back drop for reality show. you're impeached forever. you're not getting rid of that scar. >> reporter: now, there are a couple of other things that we're following up on here like democrats wanting to get john bolton, the former national security adviser, to testify, there is talk whether he would be subpoenaed and new though morning "the washington post" is reporting that the national

security aid, alexander vindman who testified against president trump is going to be booted from the white house back to the pentagon. a source telling us this morning, vindman has not been notified. laura. >> so interesting to follow all of this. thank you, tracie, live from washington for us this morning. >> well the final numbers coming in there iowa. after it's chaotic caucus on monday. pete buttigieg and bernie sanders nearly deadlocked at the top. buttigieg leading sanders by less than 1%. nbc news thought naming a winner at this time citing inconsistencies with some of the numbers. the results come as several democratic candidates will debate in new hampshire tonight. seven democrats qualified for the debate. joe biden, pete buttigieg, amy klobuchar, bernie sanders, elizabeth warren, tom steyer and andrew yang. >> happening today, oakland homeless crisis is just one of

the critical talking points when mayor libby schaaf delivers her state of the city address. some of the other hot topic issues include creating more affordable housing. her new program keep oakland housed, and her address starts at 5:00 p.m. and watch it on the mayor's facebook page or twitter account. the recent clearing out of the homelessness in santa rosa joe rodota trail has the l.a. times wondering who should be working and doing the dirty work. from local to federal levels, many leaders typically argue law enforcement agencies should manage homeless issues. well that is how it played out in the north bay. but leaders in law enforcement often argue rank and file officers don't have the bandwidth. they say social workers should be on the front lines. the times concludes federal leaders need to come up with new answers. making it in the bay. a new housing option may soon arrive for san francisco muni workers. the examiner reports muni is looking into building homes for

employees on land it already owns. it comes amid a shortage of drivers and train operators and led to slower commute times. the agency is looking into building 525 housing units above the bus yard in pattero. >> and it is friday and check out this great video of the fog rolling over the golden date. we sped it up, and kari, make it dramatic for you. >> that is cool. >> i love time lapse stuff like that. it is always cool. >> and it gets a hot of hits on social media. people love to see fog on the golden gate bridge. well that is what we're seeing right now. so maybe get those cameras ready. visibility down to about half of a mile but even less in parts of the north bay. and that fog is so low, it is only about 200 to 300 feet off the surface of the bay. so cool to see that. let's head over to mountain view. we'll start out at about 41 degrees at 7:00.

we will get a nice sunny day. temperatures warming up quickly. by 1:00 we're at 63 degrees. and heading up to the upper 60s today. san jose reaching 69 and 79 in antioch and 71 in santa rosa. we'll talk more about what is ahead tor the weekend and, mike, you have a realtime look at the fog, too. you showed the cool time lapse and that is dramatic. over here fog is not as dramatic in realtime. it is just sitting here. but i wanted to show that as you travel across the bay bridge, you'll have some fog as you either enter or exit the tunnel there for treasure island and traffic is flowing great with the taillights and the city in the distance. to problems. and this fact even though the metering lights are on in oakland, we have almost no back-up. completely cleared for a couple of seconds and then we have a little bit of a build now tor the fast track lanes just starting. great drive out of contra costa county. some fog registered for highway 37. be careful between vallejo and

with light snow by sunday. looking good for skiing but that is melting. we'll talk about if we'll have any rain or snow in the forecast in less than five minutes. and this great view of palo alto slow traffic, 101 no problem past university and thound with the headlights near and at this time almost any day this is not -- this is friday. westbound 16 minutes from highway 4 to the bay bridge. that is westbound 80. good morning to you. and, mike, you're darn tooting it is friday. before i get to the casper, the mattress company that launched a million podcasts had the first day of training and gained $1.50 and more evidence that our economy has a full head of steam. a short moment ago we got the latest data, 225,000 jobs added in the month of january. unemployment rate ticks up to a stenth of a percent to 3.6%.

if you've been watching my reports long enough you know i tell you ignore the unemployment rate rising. a tenth of a percent is negligible and there is positive reasons for the rate to go up. it is the 225,000 much bigger than expected. at 5:15 i speculated with we might see revisions downward on past data and we did. but today i say we concentrate on the very good january number. speaking of jobs. on the conference call this week, twitter said it would hire an additional 1,000 workers. though not necessarily in san francisco. we've heard jack dorsey talk down san francisco before. this week he said our concentration in san francisco is not serving us any longer and we'll strive to be more far more distributive work force to improve execution. companies moving out and the high cost of living, tough housing market, these are the

things we're going to examine as we launch hake it in the bay project starting next week right here on "today in the bay" and on our evening news. netflix has taken down nine videos in response to government requests. in one instance the kingdom of saudi arabia asked netflix to take down the hassan menage special about the crown prince and his connection of a murder to a journalist. axos was the first to report this. you know how video pops up surfing around netflix looking for something to watch and the sound comes up and it is loud and they call it auto play. netflix hears you, it is annoying. you can turn it off. check out the help page to find out how. and they give you the option of turning off that option if you are watching one episode of something, the next episode will start in ten, nine -- >> i like that. >> i do too. sometimes the remote is right this and you can't do it. >> if you fall asleep, they ask you -- >> are you still alive?

>> or you don't want to be a microphone. or mike just stay away. >> mic marks the spot. >> let's get to the weekend forecast. you want to watch the snake sfr fog rolling a distance. and it is a nice weekend. we start out chilly as we look at our live view in san jose. sun is coming up and it is a great friday. in fact, it does start out cool. let's head over to evergreen where we start in the mid-40s and reaching into the 60s in the afternoon which is above normal only at 61 degrees for our high temperature this time of the year. and then getting the kids dressed and ready for school and it this foster city expected it to be in the low 40s to start. and then as we go through the day it will warm up nicely at 1:00 we're at 64 degrees. high temperatures today. feeling very spring-like. check this out. antioch at 70 degrees. 71 in santa rosa.

and in san francisco we're up to about 62 degrees. we've still been missing out on the rain. it has been rolling across the pacific northwest. but notice that that continuous line of clouds kind of getting cut off here. and it is drying up so they're going to see an end to that rain. all because of the high pressure that has been giving us dry weather starts to retreat back to the north and then notice this area of low pressure diving south. now this will cause the bay area to get gusty winds and cooler temperatures. but still won't bring us any rain. and we are expecting some high winds between saturday night and throughout the day on sunday. especially in all of the areas shaded in this amber color. that is where we will have a high wind watch in effect. as the winds could gust as high as close to 50 miles per hour. so heads up about that. temperatures slight hi cooler but we'll enjoy much of the weekend with some nice weather when the sunshine gets up to 70 today. mid-60s tomorrow. cooler are a high of 63 inland on sunday. and then right back to the 70s

early next week. mike, you're seeing more brake lights on the san mateo bridge. >> and it looks like a good significant build with a burst of traffic coming across. we had a lot of brake lights show up over the last 15 minutes. things have calmed down now. not talking about any warning right thousand. again that talks about construction. you'll have some lane closures. overnight starting on the 15th. so still another week going on there. an that is for the continued widening project. you'll see signs on 101 as well. also just off 101 at shoreline, a crash at paris near the starbucks but a note because heading in towards linked in, google, microsoft, you might get caught up in the activity and that might be an issue if you're trying to get coffee. and tri-valley no major problems we move up to contra costa county with a build out of pay point in concord for westbound highway 4. no problems for the upper east shore freeway and build around

at the bay bridge. >> about half an hour of evolution over here but the metering lights are on an the effect filled in. and fast track moving well. it is friday, remember. and we also see slowing just shown up at the hov lane and one vehicle might be slow to clear but you shouldn't have to stop for the diamond lanes. we'll track that. fog in the north bay and patches in oakland. and it has cleared up overall. on the peninsula, highway 1 is foggy but the rest of the bay shows the lighter friday commute. south bay, we have no delays for transit. or i don't have any current delays for transit. over to you. i have a big delay. b.a.r.t. in south bay is on hole again. bob redell is live at the warm springs b.a.r.t. station. we have both worked here for about 20 years and we've seen a lot of delays when it comes to b.a.r.t. to the south bay. >> reporter: yeah, and

unfortunately we don't know when the stations will open. we'll talking about the milpitas and berryessa station. b.a.r.t. and transportation authority which oversaw the construction say they won't know until mid to late march when they're going to open. take a look at this map we're putting together on your tv screen. we're talking about the $2.3 billion project that would extend b.a.r.t. ten miles into san jose with the stops at milpitas and berryessa. b.a.r.t. stops here, the end of the line is at warm springs and fremont where i'm standing. the plan is eventually to have b.a.r.t. extend into san jose and santa clara but that is years out. now the stations are built. the b.a.r.t. tracks are installed and they were supposed to open at the end of 2018, this past december both milpitas and berryessa did open to vta light rail and bus service but b.a.r.t. trains can't run with passengers through theizatio -- stations yet. and the trains are not stopping exactly where they are supposed

to on the platform. because of a communication issue between computers on the trains and sensors at the stations. >> i have to drive 20 minutes every day at least. 20 minutes here and about 45 minutes on to san jose. >> what do you think of the delay? >> it is a bummer. it has been over a year thousand i think. so since they were supposed to open the station. >> it is ridiculous. because it is supposed to be open in november or something like that. and they are not opening and they are finding all kind of excuses. it is not acceptable. >> reporter: now vta tells us that sometime at the end of march they might be able to fix the issues that i mentioned. then they could figure out and let us know when those stations are supposed to open. reporting live here at warm springs b.a.r.t., in fremont, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. well attorneys for wildfire victims accused pg&e of continuing to use shotty and dangerous equipment even in the now devastated town of paradise.

the allegation is part of a plaintiffs' legal claim that comes by way of an expert hired by wildfire victims that said that he found parts held in place by electrical tape and rusty power lines. this is about 100 yards from the faulty line that sparked the campfire. the response to that filing, pg&e said it looked into the allegations and the line had no safety issues but it did need some equipment repair. hundreds of teachers and jobs may be on the line as one major east bay school district grappling with severe budget cuts. leaders in richmond west contra costa school district are starting and staring at a $32 million shortfall this year. right now both sides are trying to identify cost-cutting options. the union fears if none could be found, 250 teachers will get pink slips, not considering nonunion teaching staff. new this morning, berkeley

school district and berkeley high school so far are not commenting on a lawsuit filed in connection with an alleged sexual assault. berkeley side reports the suit surrounds an attempted rape in a chas room last year. it accuses administrators of telling the accuser the same person had assaulted other students in the past. the suit also claims that the school did not notify child protective services or police about the incident. berkeley did reach out to the school district and the high school but they're not chenting. the debate over a new so-called navigation center in san francisco stalling out. you'll recall the embarcadero shelter opened in december. amidst pushback from neighbors. the examiner reports supervisors committee yesterday tabled a vote to open similar centers in all 11 supervisor districts. homeless service leaders say the cost to open so many centers will impact housing for the homeless. the same committee will revisit that subject february 20th.

with gas, gas, gas. we could map it out or if you want me to ride along. i'll navigate as well. we're navigating through san jose where we're showing more slowing, the build at 6:37, 6:38 now through the south bay and late build for friday and it is gradual for 101. there is the camera right there. capital expressway 101 and 87 slowing a gentle build for san jose. a smooth flow of traffic for the rest of the bay. the area shows the brake lights and more crowds and we don't have a problem, just a commute. that is built up out of hayward and toward the peninsula. >> i bet all of the people in the cars are thinking about what they're going to do this weekend. >> except if you're their boss and you are supposed to focus on work. >> you always think about the weekend no matter what. >> and we're going to have some great weather this weekend. farmer temperatures. checking out saturday forecast with the coastal areas in the upper 50s but up to 67 degrees

inland as the sunshine continues. just wanted to give you the heads up that there will be a high wind watch in effect tor all of the areas shaded in yellow and it includes a lot of our coast and our hills. as the winds increase saturday night and throughout the day on sunday, it is also going to turn cooler. we may have those gusts close to 50 miles per hour. on sunday it will come down just a few degrees for some of the inland areas. reaching up to 62 degrees in the valleys. bay up to 60 degrees. and the coast at about 58 degrees. now there will be some nice weather at the at&t pebble beach pro am and more clouds and fog rolling through today. high in the mid to upper 50s and up to 60 degrees for the final round on sunday but the ball may get blown around. on saturday the knbr giants fan fest, starting out cool at 51 degrees and warming up throughout the day. and looking at some really nice weather there with some low 60s and then it starts to cool down

forecast coming up in less than five minutes. and i'm showing you the san mateo bridge again because the taillights i saw flashing amongst them as we travel down the flat section. no reports from chp but i think the live camera might figure out why there is more slowing in this major commute spot. new overnight, an arson investigation underway. this is after a deadly fire at a los angeles apartment complex. we've just learned that one man has died in that fire. two people are in grave condition and they have been upgraded to critical. now that fire started around 2:00 a.m. at a building near with west hollywood and firefighters found flames on both floors and people trying to escape and some breaking windows to get out. luckily though -- no firefighters were hurt. an investigation is underway. the california lottery is under the microscope after a major giveaway in ellen. in december she surprised each person in the audience with a

$500 brundle of scratchers tickets a..ing to more than $200,000. the l.a. times reported a new complaint by whistle-blowers accused the state lottery of misusing funds. the complaint comes as an audit gets underway looking into wasteful spending allegations. the state senator who requested the audit said she's concerned lottery money is not going to public schools as promised. new this morning, new questions about the future of recycling in california. this after a bill died in sacramento this week requiring beverage distributors to come up with a new recycling program and help pay for it themselves. the recycle act of 2020 did not get enough voted and it was meant to help field so many centers shutting down and now they're focusing on single use packaging. and white house insiders say president trump wants a clean house. >> getting rid of people he thinks are responsible for his

impeachment. >> starting with lieutenant colonel alexander vindman. you remember vindman. he was on the call between president trump and the ukrainian president. vindman is on the national security council in the white house and that is why he was on the call. "the washington post" said trump wants him reassigned to the pentagon. the president had a free-wheeling tv appearance on thursday morning with where he thanked supporters. see him holding up the hometown newspaper with the headline he likes so much. mr. trump did acknowledge, though, the investigations are not over. >> but i'm sure they'll try and cook up other things. they'll go through the state of new york, they'll go through other places. they'll do whatever they can because instead of wanting to heal our country and fix our country, all they want to do in my opinion, it is almost like they want to destroy our country. >> you heard the president mention new york. he's facing a number of challenges there but the biggest may be from the u.s. attorney for the southern district

arguably the most powerful federal prosecutor there is. as we have talked about, established tradition said the president cannot be prosecuted. but only while he's president. after that he's fair game. i think it is noteworthy that the president mentioned new york. president obama did not do enough to stop russians from interfering our elections but does give him the benefit of the doubt pointing out nobody realized the russians were interfering but obama did fall short. this puts president trump in an odd position. he likes talking about president obama's failures but president trump doubts the russians interfered most famously at this press conference in helsinki when the president answering a direct question about the interference said he believed vladimir putin over what his own intelligence agencies were telling him. president obama did take some action warning the russians not to continue and expelling russian diplomats. which led president trump's

[ laughter ] >> reporter: yeah, right. funny. and then take a look. we talked to these folks over here from the central valley. one is local here. and then over here we have more fans -- beer fans from far away. brian, you said you're all cozy over here. what time did you get here? >> 11:30. >> and what is it you like about pliny the younger. >> i like how balanced it is for a triple-a pa and it is hoppy

but the malt balances out nicely and it is possibly one of the best ipa's i've had. >> and you said you told your boss would be here for two days. >> correct. correct. i got the time offment it , it approved so i don't have to worry about it. >> reporter: tell us what is different this year. you want to share it with friends that couldn't make it. >> for the first time in about 16 years they're finally bottling it. so a lot of my friends that don't get to make it up here, going to get to share the beer with them back home. >> well thanks so much. >> reporter: so you could see this line goes about 100 people deep at least. and people -- there you go. another beer fan there. so we are very excited about this. they said they even seven breakfast at about 10:30 and it won't open until 11:00. but as a treat to all of the die-hard beer fans they'll be served breakfast at about 10:30 and allowed to go in and enjoy the beer. back to you.

into the rest of the day. and it is going to be a warm one. actually feeling more like spring. 59 -- 69 degrees rather in san jose. now normal is about 59 degrees. and we're up to about 70 this concord. 71 degrees in clear lake for a high today. we've seen a lot of rain moving into the pacific northwest. but notice that that continuous hine of clouds getting disconnected there so dry air coming into the system. part of that is because we have some high pressure that is started to retreat to the north and we're going to see low pressure dipping into the bay area. by saturday night into sunday, the winds are going to pick up but still no rain and it is just going to be windy. but we've had high pressure with the clockwise wind flow that is descending and sinking and giving us a clear sky. it is making the temperatures warm up. mainly because the high pressure causes that sinking dry air and as that air sinks it gets expressed and that created friction that heats up the air

so that is the reason why today we have high temperatures that are about 10 degrees above normal. then as we go into tomorrow, that high pressure moves away. that low pressure starts to move in it. and makes those winds stir around. so we'll have some gusty winds by sunday. and then it warms up wednesday again early next week. and mike, you've seen a jam the at the san mateo bridge. >> yes. but you explain how the bicycle pump fills up. the pressure. and i believe there was annin de -- an incident at the flat section and judging by the speed of the clearing i think it was a disabled vehicle assisted out of the roadway. traffic is flowing smoothly now across the bay but still if you choose, san mateo bridge slows across there but the dumbarton bridge just started to build now. you could still beat it if you leave in the next few minutes and we only have a few minutes left in the show. so stick around. northbound through san jose pretty typical light and late

coronavirus outbreak now bringing things to a standstill in sh parts of the world. one of the planes -- two of them loaded with passengers possibly exposed to the virus in china landed overnight at travis air force base in fairfield. that plane refueled overnight and is headed to san antonio. here are the hatest numbers overnight. the number of dead now well above 600. infections around the world have soared to over 31,000 people. eight people in the united states now have the virus. a live look at the warm springs b.a.r.t. station in fremont which looks like it will remain the last stop on the line for even longer because there is new delays. a lot of commuters can't wait until b.a.r.t. and vta extend that line to milpitas and berryessa. those stations were the first to open in 2018. the problem is engineers can't get t get the trains to stop exactly where they are supposed to on the platform.

vta said if the issue could be fixed by the end of next month, they'll have a better idea of when the stations will finally open. san francisco union square chanel store is dropping the fight to stop a new pot shop there opening in the neighborhood. they want to build a two storey dispense airy on gary and luxury stores in the area like chanel were fighting to keep it away. last night chanel said it is dropping the claim, paving the way for bronson to build his dispensary. the store is expected to open in three months last look at weather for today. shaping to bea nice day. >> starting out cool but highs reaching the 70s and cooling down and windy by the weekend. >> how about that commute. >> a service advisory i need to mention for b.a.r.t. riders, starts monday. some changes. now that could mean earlier start for some trains and expanded weekend service but go to bart.gov to check your drive. >> hope you have a great friday
