good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. here in buffalo, new york, this is the second round of wintry weather. they got a good dose of it earlier this week, which is what you're seeing on the ground now. but the snow is back. it's starting to pick up, which could cause problems for the morning commute. but the real danger here, isn't just the snow, but the thick layer of ice that's on the ground. this morning, a big portion of the country, waking up to a late winter wallop, snow from tennessee to new england. the hardest hit areas, upstate new york and maine, which could see up to two feet of snow. in the south, the intense rain and wind making a mess. the weather quickly going from bad to worse. >> we're driving in a tornado. >> i've never seen nothing that bad before. >> reporter: strong storms toppled trees on to homes and

power lines. and one tree came crashing down on a busy georgia highway, clipping a passing car. firefighters in florida rescued a woman and her dog. a tree fell on their mobile home, trapping them inside. the woman was later air-lifted to a trauma center. in tennessee, a fourth grade teacher was killed after a tree slammed into this van carrying city workers. at least three additional weather-related deaths have been reported across the south. heavy rain soaked parts of south carolina, turning roads into rushing rivers. this group of 30 workers had to be rescued from a flooded building in greenville. >> i can't swim, so we need help. >> reporter: in north carolina, a home surveillance camera captured a possible twister as it raced through the backyard. in south carolina, teachers had these young students sing in an effort to keep them calm during a tornado warning. back here in buffalo, new york,

the snow is expected to intensify throughout the morning. because of the bad weather, dozens of schools have been cancelled for the day. when the system finally moves out of here, we're looking at up to 5 inches of snow. with temperatures in the 20s, don't expect much melting in the area. hoda, back to you. >> all right, kathy. thank you. singing "wheels on the bus" was a smart touch there. al is here with more on where the storm has been and more importantly, where it is headed? >> we're looking at 37 million people under winter weather advisories. high wind advisories, high wind warnings from florida to new england. we're looking at a line of showers and thunderstorms that stretch over 1,700 miles. this storm will be a fast mover and intensifying. heavy snow from buffalo, binghamton to caribou, maine. with bitter windchills as the storm pushes through. big problems today will be the

winds, from new england to the delmarva peninsula. wind gusts will be tropical force. that'll cause major airport delays. heavy snow from western new york to interior sections and northern of new england, upwards of a foot of snow before it is all over. and airport delays, back from cleveland, pittsburgh, baltimore and washington and up into boston. craig? >> al, thank you. now the victory lap that president trump took in the week of his impeachment acquittal, putting his rivals, democrat and republican, on notice. we have two stories for you. starting with kristen welker. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. president trump is taking an emboldened stance in the wake of his acquittal on thursday, holding what he called a celebration at the white house. it was a chance for him to thank his republican supporters and also to vent his anger over impeachment. true to trump form, no apology to the country.

this morning, the president's defiant, free-wheeling white house event is still reverberating. >> we went through hell, unfairly. did nothing wrong. this is what the end result is. the only good headlines i've had in "the washington post." >> reporter: in a greatest hits of grievances, mr. trump rifted for more than an hour. even using a profanity. >> we were treated unbelievably unfairly. you have to understand, we first went through russia, russia, russia. it was all [ bleep ]. >> reporter: it's the first time a president has used profanity at a formal event in front of cameras in the east room. at times, the event echoed a campaign rally and those who stood by him. >> mitch mcconnell, i want to tell you, you did a fantastic job. >> reporter: and settled scores, including with the lone republican who voted to convict him of abuse of power, senator mitt romney.

>> and the only one that voted against was a guy that can't stand the fact that he ran one of the worst campaigns in the history of the presidency. >> reporter: even questioning the faith of house speaker nancy pelosi. >> when she said, i pray for the president. i pray for the president. she doesn't pray. >> reporter: that echo veiled his swipe at pelosi and romney that he made earlier in the day at the prayer breakfast. the president was introduced by conservative writer arthur brooks, who gave this message. >> you heard it was said, love your neighbor and hate your enemy. but i tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. >> i don't know if i agree with you. but i don't know if arthur is going to like what i have to say. i don't like people who use their faith as justification for doing what they know is wrong.

nor do i like people who say, i pray for you, when they know that that's not so. >> reporter: pelosi firing back. >> he's talking about things that he knows little about, faith and prayer. >> reporter: romney defending his decision. >> i believe that when i swear an oath to god, i have a responsibility to be exactly truthful. and i am truthful and did what i believe was absolutely right for our country. >> reporter: a little bit of historical perspective. former president bill clinton notably apologized to the country in his first public comments after his acquittal in 1999. president trump did not do that. he did offer one apology, that was to his family, for having them go through what he called a, quote, phony, rotten deal. the president will travel to north carolina later today to talk about economic opportunities in low-income areas as he tries to turn the page. craig? >> kristen welker from the white house. thank you. also, this morning, there's

new turmoil in the wake of the epic meltdown of the iowa caucuses. the final batch of results were released overnight, but there are lingering questions this morning about the accuracy of that vote count. as the democratic candidates attempt to move on in new hampshire. the next debate, just hours away. nbc's morgan radford joins us from manchester, new hampshire. morgan, good morning to you. >> reporter: that's right, craig. good morning. right now, all eyes are here on new hampshire, where former mayor pete buttigieg and senator bernie sanders will have to face off after they both each independently declare victory in iowa. now, they're coming face-to-face with five other presidential candidates ahead of tonight's debate here in the granite state. mixed messages this morning in new hampshire. bernie sanders moving past the caucus chaos. >> we've had enough of iowa. i think we should move on to new hampshire. >> reporter: pete buttigieg is focusing on the results.

>> that's fantastic news to hear we won. first of all, senator sanders clearly had a great night, too, and i congratulate him and his supporters. >> reporter: the only thing that's clear, both sides are claiming victory. >> what i want to do today, three days late, is to thank the people of iowa for the very strong victory they gave us at the iowa caucuses on monday night. >> we are absolutely electrified by the energy that we are coming here with and by the extraordinary validation of this campaign's vision that we had in iowa. >> reporter: we caught up with sanders on the trail on thursday. >> this process, run by the iowa democratic party, has been a disaster, unmitigated disaster. >> reporter: everyone wants to know, are you claiming victory in iowa? >> well, from where i come from, morgan, when you get 6,000 more votes than your opponent, where i come from, that sounds like a victory to me. >> reporter: overnight, the iowa democratic party released what

they say are the full results. but the national dnc chair has called for a re-canvas in iowa. and nbc news is not calling the race. the head of the dnc speaking out on msnbc overnight. >> that's not going to affect the national delegate map. there's 2,000 or so state delegate equivalents. >> reporter: as for the next set of votes, the latest monmouth university poll shows buttigieg closing in on sanders in new hampshire. with biden and warren trailing behind. but that same poll shows about half of likely primary voters have their minds made up. former vice president joe biden decided not to campaign here in new hampshire yesterday and instead focused on tonight's debate. he's hoping to avoid another disappointing fourth place finish, which is what happened in iowa, as he gets ready to prepare for nevada. back to you. >> morgan radford in

new hampshire. thank you. we should mention that savannah is also headed to new hampshire. she'll be there live talking to candidates and voters on the day of that primary, next tuesday. there's a lot of breaking news this morning when it comes to the coronavirus outbreak. dozens of people on a quarantined ship in japan have been diagnosed. including eight americans. and the death toll includes a prominent doctor that blew the whistle on the virus. molly hunter is in hong kong with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda. good morning. president trump has just tweeted that he spoke with chinese president xi this morning, saying he's powerfully focused on leading the counterattack to coronavirus. he feels he is doing very well. this as more americans are leaving wuhan. and also, more americans are getting sick. more than two dozen chinese nationals arriving in newark on a cruise ship were screened for coronavirus. four were transported to the hospital out of caution. officials say none of the two

dozen were from wuhan, china, or had traveled there. royal caribbean cruises says it was part of elevated levels of guest screening. at the epicenter in china, it is getting worse, just as a top chinese official visited thursday, describing wuhan akin to wartime conditions. shocking news that the doctor who first raised the alarm and was reprimanded for doing so has died after being infected himself. the doctor now held up as a hero. posts on social media about the 33-year-old being read billions of times. 1,500 miles from the epicenter, on the diamond princess anchored near tokyo, 16 people on board tested positive for coronavirus. you don't feel safe anymore? >> definitely not safe anymore. >> reporter: down the hall, we see the ambulances coming and going. >> there goes the ambulance. it just pulled out. look at all of the ambulances. >> reporter: one of today's new patients, rebecca frazier, one

victims. now, weinstein's lawyers will call witnesses as the celebrity trial moves closer to a verdict. the 67-year-old denies allegations of nonconsensual sex. at this point, it is still not clear whether weinstein himself will take the witness stand. good news out of georgia a family is praising a police sergeant after he jumped in to save their baby during a medical emergency. newly released video shows the frantic moments. >> where is the baby at? let me see let me see you okay okay >> there you go. there you go >> there you go. >> that's police sergeant harold drummond when he arrived at the parking lot, 6-month-old aj, the baby, wasn't dreaming. he used his fingers, got him breathing again performing cpr the sergeant said this, he would

good friday morning. it is 7:56. we've seen a lot of fog rolling that parts of the bay area. this is in fact looking from our san bruno mountain camera where parts of the city covered in the layer of fog by the airport. and drifting down the peninsula and into the north bay with visibility at a quarter mile or less. once the fog clears out we'll get sunshine and we'll see our temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s. a nice one for the afternoon. the rest of the weekend just slightly cooler and much cooler on sunday as the winds pick up and a cold front moves in. we'll watch four the potential for high winds especially on bay area hills. and next week looking good. we're back in the low 70s. will be nice to see some rain but we are going to see well above average temperatures in through early next week. let's head over to mike for an

they were stripped of their uniforms and put into these. carpenter's pair are now on display at the smithsonian national museum of american history. >> not only did we have the long uniforms but we had these short ones >> reporter: carpenter used extra material from his uniform to create a satchel. in it, he kept his most precious possessions. >> i tried to take as many pictures as i could. i sent them. fortunately, he was able to get some of them >> reporter: did you think you were going to get out of there >> yeah. i'm going to be out by christmas. going to be out by easter. going to be out by my birthday >> reporter: march 4th, 1973, more than six years after he was shot down, al carpenter and more than 100 other american p.o.w.s were loaded on to buses. their fate far from certain. >> they're going to march us out and shoot us or something. all the time, disbelieving this is for propaganda this isn't going to work >> reporter: in fact, they were
