see how quickly these contests are coming, for a campaign like buttigieg and klobuchar, they've got a lot of work to do in a lo of plalo of places in a very short time i'm not saying it couldn't happen and hats off to them they had great nights last night. buttigieg, think about this. he was tied in iowa and barely lost to bernie in a state that bernie dominated four years ago. he's on fire >> there were a lot of late deciders in new hampshire. >> yeah. >> the whole thing about iowa, i can't believe i'm still talking about iowa, is there's a bounce from iowa. late deciders went with buttigieg. if that's the definition, buttigieg seems to have done it. >> they went with klobuchar for new hampshire. it's nice for me to see somebody else's party being a chaotic mess for a change. >> this is bringing back deja vu 2016 the moderate lane didn't coalesce around a candidate, and donald trump wins.

>> you need 40% and the rest of the field to break the right way. the center-left is fractured and it may get more fractured in the weeks to come, when mike bloomberg gets in. i'm with claire. we need to pause and just reflect on how extraordinary the buttigieg question nphenomenon . it's because he's hyper articulate and he's identified himself with a natural and powerful theme in american politics, i'm the fresh-faced outsider that's going to bring generational or transformational change to washington that elected bill clinton and george w. bush, and it elected barack obama >> democrats like that fresh-face approach. claire, i think it's fair to say you represent the centrist left. assuming that's the case, what is your lane of the party do here i mean, you've got biden does someone talk to him about potentially deciding not to go forward with the race? he's hanging everything on south carolina how do you coalesce? how do you decide, okay, we need one standard bearer here or is it going to be bernie sanders?

>> i think there are going to be folks out there that will hopefully convince some of the candidates to coalesce after super tuesday. our party is not winner-take-all. it can go for a while. even after super tuesday, we will still have only half of the delegates selected this may go for a while. but eventually, i think they will be -- if you look, a lot more people are voting for a more moderate, pragmatic approach to the problems we face, than some of the things that bernie is advocating. >> true. but bernie has set the ideological terms of the debate for three or four years now. if you look at the polling, the democratic rank and file is not as freaked out as the prospect of bernie winning as the democratic elite is. >> that's a nice way of putting it don't you think the president wants to run against bernie sanders? >> he is clearly the riskiest choice i wouldn't discount his ability to win a general election. anything can happen. he has the most baggage. he'd be the candidate that trump

craig? >> peter alexander from the white house. thank you. now, the feud inside the justice department bursting into the spotlight now. the entire justice team prosecuting roger stone, the president's associate, has abruptly quit the case stephanie gosk joins us. this has to do with the sentencing >> it is remarkable. less than 24 hours, federal prosecutors filed a sentencing memo more roger stone. senior officials at the doj said they planned to reduce the sentence, causing all four prosecutors to resign from the case in an extremely rare, if not unprecedented, public protest. >> reporter: this morning, president trump's long-time friend roger stone at the center of a legal fire storm. stone was convicted for obstruction of justice, lying to investigators, and witness tampering, in a case brought by robert mueller federal prosecutors first said stone deserved seven to nine years in prison.

but senior justice department officials intervened, callin that excessive and unwarranted and recommending a more lenient sentence by the end of tuesday, all four career prosecutors withdrew from the case, and one resigned from the justice department entirely. news of the sentencing reversal coming just hours after an overnight tweet by the president, calling the original recommendation horrible, very unfair, and a miscarriage of justice. the surprising development immediately raising questions about whether the justice department was caving to pressure from the white house. overnight, eric holder, the attorney general under president obama, writing, in part, the action taken today is aberrant and inconsistent with the justice department, acting in a traditional, nonpolitical way. the doj says the decision to override the sentencing recommendation was made before the president's tweet. in the oval office, the president said he didn't contact doj about the case, but that he had every right to >> i thought that the

recommendation was ridiculous. i thought the prosecution was ridiculous >> reporter: the government's original sentencing memo concluded stone displayed contempt for this court and the rule of law. specifically noting a post stone published after his indictment, with a photo of the presiding judge in the case, and an apparent bull's eye we've obscured near her head stone later apologizing. now, chuck schumer is calling for an investigation >> the president seems to think the entire justice department is his personal lawsuit, to prosecute his enemies and help his friends. >> the latest memo from the justice department doesn't recommend a particular sentence. in the end, this is still all up to the judge the president has the power to pardon stone if he wants he didn't answer when we asked yesterday if he plans to do so just this morning, the president tweeting his congratulations to attorney general bill barr for, quote, taking charge of a case

good wednesday morning. now at 7:56 we're starting out cool in parts bay area. upper 30s in half moon bay and san martin and in the north bay in the low 40ss but a chilly start lead fo starting into a warm day and the sunshine continues. it is still looking dry through much of the next seven days. looking at slight cooldowns by the end of the week. some mid-60s for friday and then up to about 70 degrees inland on saturday. sunday we will see some rain moving in there the north that will bring in more clouds for the bay area and highs in the mid-60s and then back into the upper 60s early next week. for san francisco, low 60s today. but then we'll go back to the upper 50s, more seasonable weather by the end of the week into the start of the weekend.

bench while suffering a cardiac episode. it took place during a break in play, stopping tuesday night's game against the anaheim ducks >> here's a replay, as close as we see you see -- there, looks like bouwmeester just drops behind the bench. and credit to the paramedics, the medical staff, everybody the players calling them over. >> reporter: teammates immediately calling for help minutes later, medical personnel giving 36-year-old bouwmeester cpr. >> this is a very serious situation. >> reporter: players from both teams gathering on the ice, comforting each other as they await details on bouwmeester's condition. he was moving his arms and legs as he was transported to a hospital he was awake and alert releasing a statement, saying in part, that jay bouwmeester suffered a cardiac episode and collapsed on our bench after completing his shift thankfully, the quick response of our medical

physicians, they were able to stabilize jay. his dad just happened to be there as part of the team's dad's trip he went with his son to the hospital, when teammates and their fathers awaited updates. bouwmeester is in his 17th season with the nhl and held what is known as one of the longest ironman streaks in league history, playing 737-consecutive regular season games until he suffered a series of injuries beginning in 2014. he won an olympic gold medal with canada in 2014, and helped the blues win the stanley cup last season. players and fans now wishing a speedy recovery for a player known as an ironman on the ice the nhl requires at least two doctors must be in attendance in every game and one must be 50 feet of the bench. a defibrillator must also be available. the blues were supposed to fly to las vegas for a game tomorrow but remained in southern california overnight we expect an update on bouwmeester's condition later.
