right now at 4:30, developing now. coronavirus evacuees touching down in the bay area overnight. the difficult journey and the conditions tail now face. plus -- >> outline came out of the bushes and crabbed ahold of her calf. >> a rare lion attack shutting down a south bay park this morning and the quick thinking that helped save a child's life. and a live look across the bay area. san francisco and san jose and some parts of the bay area on this monday morning. a very good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. let's get to the forecast for you throughout the day. and look at how we're starting out today. >> that is a hot of fog through the tri-valley. and that is our dublin camera.

so we are needing to slow it down as head out and about. we're going to see that fog sticking around. through at least about 7:00 and then clearing out for a sunny day. also warmer temperatures toward noon but looking at overall visibility down to about a quarter of a mile in livermore and half a of mile in napa. elsewhere light patches of fog. so we'll talk more about this and what is ahead. mike is starting out with breaking news out of fremont. >> because of this broken height pole. jared is at the intersection of lanes in all directions. this is between two shopping centers and this morning a car took out the power pole -- or light pole in the foreground and that knocked out the signals. you see the flashing red. you treat that as a four-way stop but right now tokes are are traveling along fremont boulevard but this is the problem from the area to the freeway. again, as we get out to the maps, i'll show you where that

is. that area that we just showed you, the camera is right here. the two malls are over here. and goodwill behind the camera and toward the freeway can't go across the intersection on to mallory you have to reroute around. they expect to reopen, jared tells us, in the next few minutes but hopefully that will mean a smoother flow but that will tie up fremont traffic. we'll talk about the rest of the bay coming up. now to a developing story. this morning 14 americans who were quarantined on a cruise ship in japan are back on u.s. soil. all 14 are back in isolation. this is after testing positive for coronavirus. >> hundreds of evacuees touched down overnight. the 14 americans along with most of the evacuees will be isolated for a second time as they are examined. it is almost two weeks that passengers were quarained on the diamond princess cruise ship. we have new video from a couple

aboard the windowless cargo jet. u.s. teams in protective suits along with passengers wearing face masks and an isolation chamber aboard the plane. a second jet from japan lands at lackland air force base near san antonio. >> the degree of transmissionibility on that cruise ship is high. >> nearly 50 americans who are affected or still in treatment in isolation on the ship and a handful of people didn't want to risk breaking 14 days of quarantine aboard the ship. a girl was attacked by a animal. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in cupertino. you hear about what is happened and mountain lion attacks like this one is very rare. >>or and that is where the animals live.

these kind of attacks are rare. lsed.ntil the animal is found the little girl is okay. she was tweeted for bite woug trail with her dad and several other adults and kids when the mountain lion just jumped out. >> there were minor injuries, a couple of puncture marks but these fortunate there were adults in the group and immediately punched the lion away from her. >> reporter: they punched the mountain lion. it is estimated to be about 100 pounds. the rangels were unable to locate the animal so the search was called off but will resume today. and the goal is for dogs to chase the mountain lion up into a tree so officials could tranquilize is and take a dna swab and make sure it is the same animal that bit the little girl. once the animal is identified then the california department of fish and wildlife rangers

will decide the best course of action after that. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 4:35 and in marin county rescue teams are expected to resume desperate search this morning for a missing husband and wife. 77-year-old carol kipparski and 72-year-old ian irwin both from the peninsula were last friday. they failed to check out of their airbnb over the weekend. marin county sheriffs have requested 60 more ground searches and dog teams to help with the search. right now crews are operating under assumption that the pair went for a hike and never came back. >> our search is focused around the cottage that they rented last week. which includes the northern part of the community of invernes and state parks and portions of the national sea shore and conducting a water search in that area.

good monday morning. happy presidents' day. right now at 4:40, we're starting out with some areas dealing with patchy dense fog. watch out for that as you make your way into your drive. it will start out with low 40s and warming up fairly quickly. we'll let aer major intersection in fremont. it is thee overeading toward the freeway, the right turn lane is blocked because of a -- a pole down and a signal out as well. we'll talk about what happened coming up. now to "making it in the bay." our reporting on the bay area housing crunch. new numbers out this morning

show the number of homes built in the bay area are slowing down. >> the construction industry research board now said that the number of units built last year was nearly 10,000 less than 2018. that is about an 8% decrease. the research board said that fees and delays due to lawsuits and really just holding up construction. for any new con up to $50,000 in fees. >> in the east bay developers are trying to put up more affordable housing. berkeley is reporting a new proposal by an ex ventures to build two now buildings in south berkeley. the first is a hotel where the walgreens is in stuart and the second is a six-story building with 90 units on shaddock and russell replacing the true value and eastern supplies. many community members don't want the store to go. they say it will take years to complete both projects. later today a judge will

hear arguments on a pending lawsuit followed by cab drivers in save. they were all left holding a bag after buying expensive taxi medallions. "the chronicle" is reporting that the credit union is now seeking $155 million in damages. that suit faults the city for allowing the industry die as ride share services took hold. this as cab drivers took out exorbitant amount of loans to buy hundreds of medallions now deemed worthless. the hearing takes place on friday. san francisco is reaching the scooter limit. four companies just released 750 new ones across the city. reaching san francisco's maximum of 4,000. that limb ipt w-- that limit wa in october. n ancisco riders took about ter 8,000 scooter trips a day last month. 4:43 right now. schools are out so what does the

welcome back to you on this monday morning. presidents' day. a live look outside. kind of see that hazy fog that we're talking about over san francisco this morning. guess it all depends on are where you are waking up. or perhaps sleeping in on this holiday. taking that extended weekend day. >> is that a new light on top of the transamerica building. >> i was looking at that and thought maybe i didn't notice it. >> maybe they turn it on when it is foggy. >> a beacon of hope. >> that looks cool. >> shining start tonight. >> inspiring a song. let's get ready for the day as

we check out our live view in san rafael out of the north san. and patches of fog and this stretch is good. and heads up that you will drive in and out of the fog around the bay area. temperatures in the low 40ss in napa. we're at 46 in oakland and 46 in palo alto and 50 degrees in san jose. so a milder start to the day. but you do still need a jacket as you head out of the door in pleasant hill. heading to the b.a.r.t. station at about 45 degrees at 6:00, reaching into the mid-60s by 11:00. we're going to have a very warm day once this fog clears out and we get sunshine. we'll also have a breezy wind blowing off the coast and that is going to warm up those temperatures. especially for the inland areas. take a look at valley temperatures, up to 73 degrees today in santa rosa. antioch reaching 71. san jose 70. and in oakland and palo alto up to 68 degrees with san francisco

in the mid-60s. here is a look at satellite view where we're seeing a lot of very wet weather moving into the pacific northwest. with we could see a swirl of clouds here. this disturbance will roll on by and still not bring us any rain. and in fact we're going to see another couple of waves of some low pressure but it looks to dry up before it reaches much of the bay area. we'll bring in more clouds on friday. you could even see the change in the colors there. indicating that there will be some slightly lower pressure. then going into the weekend a couple of waves move to the north. there is a slight chance the north bay could see rain on sunday and then next week we'll have a better chance of rain moving in. we may finally see a change in our weather pattern but that is mostly beyond the seven-day forecast. we are dry all week. and temperatures will still be very much well above average going into the weekend. mike, you're tracking the developments in fremont. that is right. and two things, first the fog developing in the tri-valley.

at least as far as road weather index goes but i've seen it in patches around our live cameras drifting around all morning. so that is one major note. but for fremont, this may be here all morning, this major a problem.nters so as we'll take a live look. i'm talking about this light pos for all of the signals, multiple lanes in all four directions. these folks here are trying to fw -- trying to get to the freeway and you cannot make the right turn in a that little lane but you have to treat this as a four way stop so the goodwill is behind me and then catty corner just stop at that signal and able to make the right turn toward the freeway of off of fremont boulevard. back oup to the maps again, showing you this here, that turn is where we're talking about with this light pole down but

that intersection is a major one for fremont and that is a problem for much of the day from what we understand. they hope to have -- [ inaudible ] in toward the bay area there are no problems as far as speed sensors go but the look from our oakland camera, yeah, there is fog drifting through right now. it is okay for drivers but fog in the area. >> we'll take your word for it. thanks, mike. it is 4:50 right now. one woman escaped a house fire over the weekend in daly city. the flames over an hanover street on saturday night. the woman woke up to the fire and luckily got out in time and it is still not clear how the fire started. 4:51 now. police in stockton arresting people and towing six cars in a bust. >> posted these photos on

facebook. they gave out 16 tickets and inspected 18 vehicles and one person was arrested for driving under the influence and having a loaded handgun in his car. this morning we're learning about a large drug bust in northern california. investigators received 1400 marijuana plants at a grow house in west point, 70 miles southeast of sacramento. one man is in custody following the last week's raid and discovery came after deputies served a search warrant on the home and say that the house also had dangerous electrical modifications and structural changes and was unsafe to live in. a new proposal could give inmates a clean record to fight wildfires. they want to fast track the expungement process for inmates who work with firefighters. the plan would allow former inmates who worked as an inmate firefighter to apply when they are released. hundreds of inmates fight wildfires in the state such as
