mallory toward the surface streets and shopping centers and affects folks getting back from transit back and forth. that is what the effect is. and the rest of the roadways are moving smoothly and we'll cover them coming up. new developments overnight in the coronavirus outbreak. 14 americans who tested positive have now arrived at travis air force base. bob redell is live outside of travis. what is the next step for these patients? >> reporter: well, marcus, the 14 americans who contracted the coronavirus will be treated at as facility off of the travis air force base behind me. there were passengers that was docked in japan and they flew back overnight and one of the flights landing in travis and the other one at lackland in san antonio. this couple have been documenting the trip and you could see suits and face masks

and an isolation chamber aboard the plane. now the couple was not forced to leave the diamond princess cruise ship where they've been in quarantine for self da-- for several days but u.s. officials who came aboard high lit encouraged them to disembark. >> you guys want to go back to the u.s., is that right. >> yes. >> you mentioned your bother. >> as long as we'll be safe. >> honestly you're much safer getting off this ship. i would not stay on this ship if i were you. >> the couple and the other passengers not showing any signs of illness will be quantitied here n -- quarantined here for 14 days. others arrived on february 7th will being quarantined also for two weeks at the west wing on the base. the death toll is rising. there are nearly 1800 people who have died so far and roughly 70,000 people have been infected

and republican senator rand paul are will be in san francisco tonight. the hot button kentucky senator raised headlines for breaking with the party to restrict the president's ability to wage war against iran. he'll speak at the italian athletic club in an event organized by san francisco republican party. 5:07, a new measure would get tough on california homeowners who file short-term rental bands. orinda senator plans to introduce that legislation today. the bill is meant to deter so-called party houses where the one where gunfire erupted on halloween night injuring people. and the cameras seen as a crime fighting tool have critics questioning if they overstep privacy rights. nine bay area law enforcement agencies now have agreements

with amazon's ring. it allows police and deputies to tap into the camera feeds and in some cases involving crimes but critics say public oversight has not kept up with the new technology. they're calling for more legislation nationally and to ensure privacy is protected. happening today, bay area protests plan to send a message in the form of a human billboard. they'll create a human billboard on highway 101 in palo alto spelling out truth matters. they plan to protest outside of one of mark zuckerberg's homes in san francisco. demonstrators are calling for facebook to stop showing political advertisements with false claims and stop vedding misinformation. well maybe you saw this video last week of an up close encounter with a whale. well experts point out it is illegal. so had this happened at dana point, near orange county in southern california and you could see right there at one point that whale popping its

head out of the water for a little rub. well no one tells "the chronicle" it is looking into what happened violates the marine mammal protection act. they remind everyone not to interact with sea life in the wild. >> that is right. don't touch the whales and try to get back as far as you can. i think the rule is like 300 feet. so just keep that in mind if you're doing whale watching. we have a lot of low clouds rolling by as we check out the live view of san francisco. now we're going to see that fog just drifting around the bay area. with we still see it right over the tri-valley. where visibility is down to a quarter of a mile. half a mile visibility in oakland. and then as you head out of the door, we'll see temperatures in san francisco from the upper 50s -- or upper 40s i should say to start to about 60 degrees at noon. we'll get a look at the rest of the forecast and, mike, there is a possible delay for the fremont commute. you gave a great transit forecast but this is important for riders at the fremont

station, you recognize this intersection, it is mallory at fremont boulevard, we're panning the area and a signal is out that will cause folks to treat it as a four-way stop. out to the maps. it is light traffic but this affects folks heading to the b.a.r.t. station along mallory between mallory and walnut, remember that. and we'll track it through the morning because it sounds like it will take all morning to fix the signal. and the south bay and peninsula, no problem. a little fog in the tri-valley and then through contra costa county, a smooth flow of traffic toward the bay bridge where we don't have a back-up and i don't predict any big heavy flow of traffic because we have a holiday for many businesses. we'll track the changes. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 5:10 now. a suspected shoplifter. the takedown caught on camera. and we have video you don't want to his. take a look. >> we do not want to lose anyone as we respond to what is

760 million people either under quarantine, some sort of restriction or mandatory checks there. 760 million people is 10% the entire world's population. 10%. here at home, facebook is canceled a marketing conference in san francisco. computer giant ibm will pull out of the rsa conference that takes place next week in san francisco. ibm said the health of the ibm-ers is the primary concern so it is pulling out for safety. the biggest tech conference in europe is canceled and special flights were canceled to barsel ona because nobody is going. so it is not just tech affected but airlines and other things. the "wall street journal" counted up the ships leaving china ports and reported at least 50 sailings have been canceled. other ships leaving only about a third full. it will take time to affect o--

affect our ports here. many of the ships left three weeks or a month ago. mark zuckerberg wants governments to set rules they must follow, facebook, in the form of regulation. the facebook creator wrote an op-ed in london financial times newspaper saying, quote, i believe good regulation may hurt facebook's business in the near term but it will be better for everyone, including us, over the long-term. of course facebook facing all of those troubles you were mentioning and the protest that will happen today with the ad thing where they've said we don't care if the ad is false, we'll run it. and that is got a lot of people very upset. >> we'll watch for that human billboard later today. 5:16. and here is a story you may want to raise your glass to. they expect the wine prices to drop to the lowest level in five

volunteer at the children's museum in memphis and they had a grocery store and i would be the cashier and ring them up. >> i thought you were going to say you had to restock the shelves. >> that too. >> that is great. and i love that. and she was able to have the party at target. so we have everything you need there. >> everything. so we're maybe heading out shopping today and we have to run errands if you're off of work. your view in palo alto. we're starting out with some clear visibility here but we have seen some fog drifting around. especially some of the inland valleys. and temperatures starting out in the upper 40s. expect a hot of cloud cover to start out today. and then as we go into the rest of the day, a lot of sunshine breaking through. it is also going to warm up fairly quickly. let's get a look at all of our microclimate as we head toward noon at about 64 degrees in livermore and 67 in tarld and--

fairfield and in napa. so a nice day to take lunch outside. get outside and go hiking for a nice small walk. we reach into the low 70s in the north bay. up to 71 in napa. and about 86 degrees in fremont at 2:00. cupertino also at about 68 degrees. and then as we go into the rest of the day, it it is still feeling very comfortable. though need for a jacket. but you'll be wanting to put that on as the evening goes along and our temperatures drop. we'll head down into the low 40s once again by it this time tomorrow morning. we're seeing clouds just off the coast. a small disturbance that will be moving in by tomorrow. but it doesn't bring us any rain. it is still going to be dry. may make it more breezy as we go through the rest of the week. still looking at a couple of very weak disturbances and in fact seeing it here on friday. but no moisture with it. so maybe just a few more clouds. we'll have a slight chance of some north bay showers on sunday. and then we should see the

pattern changing by next week. finally an area of low pressure that could come in and bring us some rain by the middle to end of next week. so it is dry all this week and still very warm temperatures feeling very springlike. get out there and enjoy it. and mike is looking out for people in fremont. >> a lot of people for various reasons. over here the continued work of a sill nall lamp post was taken out and the electricity messed up at this major intersection of fremont and mallory avenue in fremont itself. you see the chase bank, goodwill in the picture as well. now here you see this person, there are people inside under the street there working on the power lines because they are below the surface of the street but because of that be careful approaching the intersection. now this is an important one as we look at maps. this is between folks heading toward b.a.r.t. from the fremont and folks heading to the freeway and other areas in treatment. and the fremont hub, that not her shopping target but the same

all get sunshine today. it turns out to be a nice one with highs reaching into the upper 60s and low 70s. we'll even look ahead to the weekend, that is coming up in when six minutes. but mike is saying there is complications for your drive through fremont. and a major important intersection. this is chase bank, goodwill and folks know where the fremont hub is. this signal is out. a four-way intersection is out because of a power pole or a light pole taken out right here early morning in a crash. no major injuries reported but this is a major problem as we look at your map. traffic control in the area to the b.a.r.t. station, you'll have to slow down and be delayed getting to the freeway also delays. the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive. more complications across the bridges coming up. back to you, laura. dozen of america cruise ship passengers who may have been exposed to the coronavirus are in the bay area this morning. at least 14 tested positive for

the virus. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live outside of travis air force base in fairfield to talk about the next step for these passengers now, bob. >> reporter: laura, yes, the passengers who are not showing any signs of the coronavirus infection, they will be quarantined here at travis air force base nor for the next 14 days but the passengers have been tested positive, they will be on the base. they chose to left the cruise ship in japan and some landed here at travis air force base at 11:00 last night on a chartered flight and the others flew to lackland air force base in san antonio. a couple posted this from inside of the airplane and everybody is wearing fas masks. the staff is in hazmat gear and there is a isolation chamber on board. there are now 70 new confirmed cases of coronavirus and they

encouraged americans to leave the ship. this wasn't mandatory but they highly encouraged it. we smoke by phone to a passenger who chose to stay on board the ship and not risk breaking his quarantine. >> what we did know they were doing to cram us on buss with a bunch of other people who haven't finished the 14-day quarantine. >> reporter: the death toll from the coronavirus is rising unfortunately. nearly 1800 people have died and roughly 70,000 people have been infected worldwide and it spread to 29 countries including here in the united states. reporting live here at travis air force base, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. 5:34 for you this morning. and a little girl is recovering this morning after a terrifying mountain lion attack at south bay park. that park remains closed and that cat still is on the loose. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in cupertino. and kris, when the alert went out i was hiking which is a scary thing to read. but then we need to let people

know that attacks like this, they're rare. >> reporter: they are very rare. though there has been increased activity here at rancho san antonio park. and we just saw a ranger coming in likely for the search for the animal with a cage in the back of the truck. again the attacks are rare but this is a preserve where you do see a lot of activity. a search is on for the mountain lion that bit the little girl yesterday. it is -- until it is found rancho san antonio park will remain closed. to reiterate the little girl is okay but treated for a bite on her leg. she was on a hiking trail about a mile from the entrance of the park with her dad and several other adults and kids when the mountain lion just jumped out and stha snatched her. >> there were minor injuries and puncture marks and she is fortunate that they immediately punched the lion away from her.

>> so that mountain lion is estimated to be about 100 pounds. they were not able to find the animal before dark so they will pick up the search this morning. plan is for trained dogs to chase the big cat up into a tree where with then officials could shoot it with a tranquilizer gun to get a dna swap to see if it is the same mountain lion that bit the 6-year-old. once that animal is id'd they will decide what to do next. there were a number of encounters last year in august a mother lion out with her cubs that caused the trails to be closed then a closure in november as well. i'll put all of this information up on my twitter feed at kris nbc. there has been activity out here. you definitely want to stay away from the park. it is closed until the mountain lion is found. in cupertino, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." in marin county rescue teams are expected to resume the desperate search this morning

for a missing husband and wife. 77-year-old carol kipparski and 72-year-old ian irwin both from the peninsula were last seen on friday. they failed to check out of the airbnb in the inverness area. they are requested dog teams to help in the search. right now crews are operating under the assumption that the pair went out for a hike and just never came back. >> our search is focused around the cottage that they rented last week. which includes the northern part of the community of inverness and state parks as well as portions of the national sea shore. we are are also conducting a water search of the bay in the area. >> search teams are using thermal impat thermal im -- images to try to locate the couple. if anyone has seen them you should call authorities immediately. this is new video from a

crash in brentwood on saturday night. police say that a 23-year-old man crashed into a tree. this is near fairview and central boulevard. officers say that alcohol does not appear to be a factor. >> that driver has not been identified. also an 18-year-old woman is dead after this crash in antioch. police say it happened yesterday on james dublin boulevard. that victim was a passenger who was ejected from the car. turning now to decision 2020. today bernie sanders will attend a rally in the east bay and will be in richmond at the crane way pavilion. they expect 3,000 people to attend. president trump headed to the golden state set to visit bakersfield and the coachella valley on wednesday. he will meet with farmers to talk about water issues. according to the desert sun trump will meet with oracle founder larry ellison at a private fundraiser. voters face a deadline tomorrow to register for the super-tuesday prime.

"the chronicle" is reporting that a credit union is now seeking $155 million in damaged,

they fault the city tor allowing the industry to dry as ride sharing took hold and as cab drivers took out exorbitant loans to buy hundreds of medallions now deemed mostly worthless. the hearing is on friday. marcus, we have breaking news on the traffic front. but one of the issues i was worried about is the bay bridge toll plaza. there was a stall there and live camera shows no problem and no lanes blocked and the sensors show a similar thing. so we'll track that. the rest of the contra costa county shows a smooth flow of traffic. another issue across the san mateo bridge and a disabled vehicle and additional concern because this is the view. fog kicking in. so be careful. traffic flow seems to be smooth but you may find slowing. live look out in fremont and we continue to follow this major intersection. this is mallory avenue here and that is fremont boulevard and you know that fremont hub and the plaza, two major shopping areas that will get crowded throughout the day. this will affect folks heading toward the b.a.r.t. station

through the area. getting back out to the maps, you see the slower drive that will impede your drive from the freeway itself to the b.a.r.t. station. you see that at the top of the screen and 880 at the bottom of the screen, in the middle is the major intersection with the crash and the signal out probably all morning. >> monday morning. great weekend. >> it is a holiday. >> for a lot of people, yeah. >> not us. because we're here. >> you could look forward to next weekend. how will the weather hold. it looks good going into the weekend. still sunny and very warm. we're going to continue the warm weather we've seen recently until the next several days. so by saturday it is a bright sunny 67 degrees inland. and then by sunday we're in the low 60s. a few more clouds moving in. a slight chance of rain for the north bay down to san francisco. looks like other areas will stay dry on sunday. but we'll see at least a few changes. now let me know what you already have in your weekend plans, with where you're headed. i'm on social media at kari hall weather on twitter, tafacebook d

right now at 5:45, as you head out of the door in san jose, for the most part it is clear. the clouds are up a little bit higher but we'll see some of the fog drifting around and our temperatures heading into the upper 60s today. we'll talk about this and the rest of the week coming up. here is some of the fog. the san mateo bridge, the problem is somewhere in the area i'm pointing to, can't make it out. through bu there is a crash blocking two of the three commute lanes.

that is one issue getting over from the east bay. and in the east bay fremont this major intersection with a crash and it may delay folks getting toward their jobs as well. a developing story in southern california where drew carey's former fiance has been killed in the hollywood hills. >> police were called to dr. amy hardwick's home on saturday morning with where they found her badly injured. she later died. police say hardwick had a restraining order against a former boyfriend which recently expired. police later arrested the boyfriend garreth pursehouse. >> i put the two together and i said wait a second this guy was on the show just a couple of weeks ago and i remember feeling like this guy, there is something off. he had a weird energy. >> dr. hardwick with a marriage counselor with her own youtube channel. she and drew carey broke up back in 2018. one woman escaped serious

injury in daly city house fire over the weekend. we have video showing how intense the flames with were on saturday night on hanover street. the woman woke up to the fire but managed to get out in time. still thought clear how the fire started. a large drug bust in northern california. calaveras county deputies received more than 1,400 marijuana plants at a grow house 70 miles east of sacramento. one man is in custody following last week's raid. the discovery came after deputi deputies served a search warrant on the home. there is a coordinated effort to out the attorney. >> and many say bill barr should step down. >> they've signed an open letter and to your point, marcus, these aren't signatures from just anyone. these are people who spent careers at the justice department. they say they do not have confidence barr can remain neutral and independent. barr has been involved in

several controversies, all of them revealed in just the past week starting with the news he set up a special channel at justice to receive reports from the president's personal attorney who has been charged with investigating the bidens in ukraine. there are some questions about whether he stepped in to stop the prosecution of a turkish-based bank at the president's request and then you course you have roger stone. barr did what the president asked and prosecutors asked for a lighter sentence for stone and that happened but was it coincidence. did barr know ahead of time that is what the president wanted? is the president directing the decisions at the department of justice? barr says no. the open letter criticizing stone sentencing recommendation reads, a person should not be given special treatment in a criminal prosecution because they're a close political ally of the president. governments that use the

enormous power of law enforcement to punish their enemies and reward their allies are not constitutional republics, they are autocracies. the government is closed for the presidents' day holiday and the president in florida, a few days ago showing him doing a lap at daytona. we're tracking what is happening at washington. should be a fairly quiet day. find me on twitter @scott mcgrew. >> thank you, scott. did you catch this video last week. a lot of people talking about it. an airline passenger posting it on social media. so it shows a man sitting directly behind her repeatedly punching her seat. american airlines has said the man's drink spilled after the woman reclined her seat back. the woman is having none of it. she is considering a lawsuit claiming she received injuries and called the airline's comments slanderous. the airline so far hasn't issued any further comment.

to recline or not to recline. trending this morning, a walmart employee taking the internet by storm. >> this is charlene who walked at walmart in maryland. take a look at her there. this is a walmart facebook page and her pose with all sorts of must-have products. regardless of the day or the product, she always manages to keep the same straight face in each photo. which makes the post even more relatable. a lot of people are saying that. right now the store has started a petition to get her on thelen show. >> the new grumpy cat. >> look at her. >> she's having fun with the job. >> that is great. >> i like that. >> makes you want to go see her. >> and she's looking at you like mm-hmm. >> charlene. >> mm-hmm. let's get started on this monday morning of the a live look out there. in dublin we can barely see anything. this is the issue for drivers in the east bay and up to napa. so we're going to see in dublin, visibility cut down very low and where our temperatures in the mid-40s. now we go from 44 degrees into the mid-60s going into the afternoon. a lot of sunshine today. but take a look at what you have to deal with for your morning drive. livermore, that fog reducing visibility to about a quarter of a mile. in oakland it is down to about half a mile. now it is improving right now. in napa near the airport, we do still see fog in the area. as we go into the day, it clears out. and look at what we'll see. heading up to about 69 degrees in livermore. 70 in concord. and 66 in clear lake. santa rosa reaching 73 degrees. it is going to be a really nice day. now we may see a few more clouds going into the middle of the week as this disturbance moves

in. it looks like it still won't bring us any rain. in fact we'll see a couple of areas of low pressure that will brush by the bay area. we could see one coming in on friday and then a lot of the storm systems to the north of us may be some spotty showers in the north bay on sunday. while the rest of us continue on with dry weather. but look at next week. we may see enough in the change in our pattern to bring in some showers by the middle of next week. but we're still dry this week. we're enjoying the warm weather, feeling very much like spring. low 70s today. and mostly some mid to upper 60s the rest of the week. and, mike, the fog is a concern for the san mateo bridge. >> because of visibility. but also because it can't -- you can't see the slowdown that is happening in the distance. here the flat section looks great near the high-rise and on the high-rise we have this issue. a crash reportedly blocking two of the three westbound commute lanes. even though it is a lighter commute, you can't see that far

in front of you on the san mateo bridge and that is a page kw-- concern and folks are hitting the brakes across the area. the ambulances was called off so no major injuries and that is good news but use dumbarton bridge and because of the holiday for many businesses but a lot of folks still have to be out there at work. if you take b.a.r.t. to work or wherever you're going this morning it may be an issue because off of 880 at mallory we still have the signal that is out. a four-way stop there and you see they're working on the stop signal. there is fog and low clouds drifting through the area and they're working here. folks familiar with this intersection, there is goodwill and chase and our camera with the back to the fremont hub. back to you. >> thanks, mike. happening now, general motor is pulling out from down under. the american care maker is leavi leaving australia, new zealand and thailand.

welcome back, everyone. it is 5:57. what does it take when did t comes to "making it in the bay." last week we talked to scott mcgrew to look at the homes you could pie outside of the bay area for what you would pay here. >> our viewers had so much fun with it you're going to do it again. >> i can't tell if it is fun looking at dream homes or sort of weirdly painful looking at where we could be living. now the bay area has great weather, great people, great traditions and culture, but hour houses they are expensive. i'll start at the low end of the property ladder. that is half a million dollars, that is lower end in bay area. for $500,000 in concord, you could buy a home that is a little less than a thousand square feet, one bathroom and

recently ren -- renovated. this week we picked phoenix and boise. very popular with californians. but let's start with phoenix. the same price in phoenix. this is in a gated community, it is four bedrooms, about 2 1/2 times the size of the house in concord. of course phoenix has quite good weather as well. except in the middle of the summer. and there is the outside for that. boise very popular. i picked this one because it is just so unusual. it is three stories tall. the main living room is on the second floor. four bedrooms, four bathrooms. it is close to hiking trails and the rivers. there you see the kitchen and there you see the bedroom. now the key to boise, marcus, if you move to boise, do it now because boise is not happy with the number of californians that have shown up there so get there early so when more californian's come, you'll say, oh, those californians. >> but that commute is going to kill you.
