two hikers, a couple in their 70s, now missing for three days in the north bay. coming up, when search and rescue teams will resume looking for the pair. and all eyes on nevada this week as presidential hopefuls descend on the silver state ahead of saturday's caucus but candidates are also reviving and coming up with a fight in california. this is next with a big rally happening in the east bay today. the third hour of today continues right now. and good morning to you. thanks for starting your morning right here with with us. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. maybe we should greet everyone like the politicians do. >> yeah. right. we can see the low clouds and fog in some spots and making a good day to head out for enjoying the sunshine. look at tri-valley temperatures around pleasanton, livermore, dublin as well as around danville. we're reaching into the upper 60s today. we'll look at the rest of the forecast, but mike has a heads up about two important spots. one is on surface streets but the low clouds it is hard to see the crew at the intersection of mallory and fremont. major traffic near the fremont hub in fremont. we'll look at the map. this affects folks heading to the freeway and folks heading over to the b.a.r.t. station. the other issue although freeways with moving nicely is on the san mateo bridge follow impeding the crash blocking to lanes with west bound. more on that coming up. back to you. >> thank you, mike. bay area developments overnight in the coronavirus outbreak, 14 americans who tested positive have now arrived at travis air force base. "today in the bay's" bob redell

joins us outside of travis. what is the next step for these patients? >> reporter: the 14 americans contacted the coronavirus, they'll be treated at a facility off of the travis air force base that is right behind me. a total of 340 passengers left that cruise ship. they flew on two chart he flights back to the united states. one of the flights landed here at travis at around 11:00 last night and the other one at lackland air force base in san antonio. cheryl and paul have been documenting their journey back to the united states and you could see u.s. teams in protective suits along with passengers wearing face masks and what the couple described as an isolation chamber aboard the airplane. the couple was not forced to leave the diamond cruise ship where they've been in quarantine and there are 70 new confirmed cases of coronavirus. but u.s. officials who came aboard, they highly encouraged

them to disembark. >> you guys want to go back to the u.s., is that right? >> yeah. as long as we'll be safe. >> honestly, you're much safer getting off this ship. >> okay. >> i would not stay on this ship if i were you. >> the couple along with with other passengers who are not showing any signs of illness will be quarantined here for 14 days at travis air force base. you'll recall there are over 200 vaccies from wuhan who arrived at travis on february 7th and they're being quarantined at the west wind inn on the base. the death toll from the coronavirus is rising. nearly 1,800 people have died worldwide. roughly 70,000 people have been infected. it is now spread to 29 countries including the united states. coming up at 6:30 we'll hear from a man from sacramento who decided to stay on board the cruise ship and not return back

will survive. it happened at the el cerrito del norte station. the 17-year-old boy flashed a gun on the platform of the train and that the gun was found at the scene. because he's still being treated, he is not yet been charged. a new measure will get tough on california homeowners who flout short-term rental bans. steve glazer plans to introduce legislation today. it would ahow cities to fine homeowners $5,000 for violating local rental laws. the bill is meant to deter so-called party houses like the one with gunfire erupted on halloween night in orinda killing five people. two men are dead. rescuers say it is a miracle another man survived after an avalanche in colorado. all three were riding snowmobiles near veil saturday and it is believed they may have trigged the slide. two victims were buried and then just couldn't be rescued. a third man somehow managed to

claw his way to safety. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking flooding that is happening in parts of the south. i know we saw some issues in mississippi? >> yeah. all along the mississippi river. so this affects many states across parts of the south and the midwest. so here is what is going on. they've seen relentless storms moving through although right now we're not seeing a lot of heavy rain but these are all of the flood warnings that are in effect for the mississippi river and all of the tributaries. we're seeing the highest amount of flooding that we've seen in about 40 years. so a state of emergency issued in mississippi in the wake of that major flooding and there is more rain on the way. now in jackson, mississippi, the watt with -- the water on the pearl river causing massive flooding and people have left homes and they don't know when they could come back and there is also urban search and rescue teams trying to get people

evacuated and they say it may be days before theed into waters start to subside so that is something we'll be watching over the next few days. here is the home, we've enjoyed some springlike weather and also some very dry conditions as you head out of the door in concord. we're starting out at about 44 degrees. heading into the upper 60s today. that is well above average. we'll talk about what is coming our way for the rest of the week and, mike, european trying to warn people about a crash in the fog. >> that right. on the san mateo bridge, a bad combination crash and fog and san mateo bridge. you see the slow clouds and fog impeding the view of the taillights. westbound your commute direction. everything is fine here. but look just past that on the high-rise at the base things are are just jamming on the brakes approaching the crash at the high-rise blocking two of the three westbound commute lanes on the sha-- on the san mateo brid. use the dumbarton bridge. there is chp on the scene. the rest of the commute, on the freeways it looks great but

san francisco. ibm said the health of ibm-ers is the primary concern so pulling out for safety. the world's biggest tech conference in europe has been canceled. united airlines canceled special flights to barcelona to handle the conference passenger load because there is no conference. so it is not just tech affected but airlines. the "wall street journal" counted up the ships leaving china ports and said 50 ships have been leaving less sand a third full. many of the ships arriving now left three weeks or a month ago. facebook mark zuckerberg said he wants governments to set down rules facebook has to follow in the form of regulation, he wrote an op-ed in the london financial times newspaper saying, quote, i believe good regulation may hurt facebook's business in the short-term, in the near term, but it will be better for everyone, including us, over the

the tri-valley. as we have seen visibility cut down to a quarter of mile. it is just as bad in oakland. so in the spots in between we've also seen patchy dense fog. it is down to about three miles visibility in napa as well as san jose. and we'll see it kind of moving around over the next couple of hours. but once it clears out, we're in for another beautiful day. and our temperatures in san jose go from 48 degrees at 7:00 to about 66 degrees at 1:00 today and continuing to warm up a few degrees more from there. reaching 70 degrees in san jose. keeping in mind that normal is about 61, 62 degrees. we're up to 69 in napa. san francisco reaching 66 degrees. we can see some clouds and area of low pressure just off the coast. that will roll in and bring us more clouds but unfortunately still doesn't bring us rain. but we're seeing the high pressure that kept it dry breaking down allowing for at least a couple of the surges of

some cooler air and some moisture to move in. we're still not going to see think rain until possibly in the north bay by the end of the weekend. and early next week we should start to see the areas of low pressure moving in that could bring us some rain. but it does stay dry over the next seven days. so our inland areas still well above normal temperature-wise. reaching up to 70 degrees and mid-60s by the end of the week. mike, you've been tracking that breaking news out of fremont. >> we do. we have breaking news out of fremont. and good news over here. look i want to see flashing lights. so still working on the repairs for the power pole that is down but now flashing red light and that is good news and a visual indicator telling folks use this as a four-way stop. we're talking about treatment boulevard at mallory avenue, the map will show you this is an important section by the fremont hub and that corner is where folks were in the roadway doing the work so be very careful. low clouds making it tough to see. the b.a.r.t. station is up here so if you are heading to the

happy president's day. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. okay, i want to bring in meteorologist kari hall for this one. this is a video out of heathrow airport in london. watch this landing here as the heavy rain and wind making it extremely difficult as you could see now the plane and starting to maneuver to the side there. and this is just a scary -- can you imagine what the people on that plane are experiencing right now. >> the pilots alone. >> and huge plane there. they make the landing. but this is just a scary situation. we saw similar storm hit london last week as the plane had problems landing there as well. and kari, that is something that i guess a lot of things that we don't just think about from day-to-day that those pilots have to deal with those winds. >> give it up for that pilot right there. [ applause ] >> that's crazy. >> i would be afraid if i was that photographer waiting for it could come in too. >> you never know what could happen or what you may be filming at that point. so let's get out of the door this morning.

we've had some reduced visibility. something also pilots have to deal with as we've seen the fog drifting especially in the tri-valley into the east bay. visibility in oakland down to a quarter of a mile. so just watch out for that as we drive and get out of the door this morning we're seeing the low clouds over the south bay but we could see at street level. now we're doing to see all of this clearing out as we head throughout the day. and we're at 66 degrees at 2:00 and normally we're reaching about 62 so it is another warm day. we'll talk more about this. mike is seeing more complications with one drive across the bay. traffic is light but the san mateo bridge you could barely see. we'll look the aat the map. the problem with low visibility is an issue but there is a crash that we've been dealing with for half an hour. west 92 jamming up from the end of the flat section up the high-rise with reports of two vehicles still involved in a crash blocking two of the three

westbound lanes. in the east bay, fremont at mallory there is traffic control. use stevenson to the b.a.r.t. station and we'll talk more about this coming up. back to you. >> thanks, mike. news on the deadly coronavirus. hundreds of americans are in the bay area quarantined for a second time. now you may have heard about about the cruise ship off the coast of japan where they have confirmed coronavirus infections. this morning the same passengers who may have been exposed there are now here. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live outside of travis air force base where the passengers arrived overnight. and, bob, you found out what will happen next with for the people with the confirmed cases. >> reporter: correct, marcus. those not showing any signs, they'll be quarantined at travis air force base behind me for the next 14 days. the 14 americans who arrived last night who did test positive for the virus and anybody else who shows any signs of the illness they will be treated at camp roberts on the bonder of

monterey and san luis obispo. there were 340 passengers who decided to leave the quarantined cruise ship in japan. some landed here at travis air force base around 11:00 and the others arrived at lackland air force base in san antonio. a couple from the cruise ship posted video from inside of the flight. it was a chartered 747 airplane. everyone is wearing face masks. the medical staff appears to be in full hazmat gear and also what looks like an isolation chamber on board. they board the diamond princess cruise ship where there is new information, 99 new confirmed cases of coronavirus and those officials encouraged americans on board the ship to leave. we spoke by phone with matthew smith of sacramento who chose to stay on board the ship and thought risk breaking his quarantine. >> well, we did know was they were going to cram us on to buses with a bunch of other people who haven't served --

finish the 14 day quarantine. >> reporter: the death toll from the coronavirus is rising. nearly 1,800 have died. bob redell for "today in the bay." >> thank you for that. track the very latest on the virus along with with us. we're posting all of the information coming into the newsroom online at nbcbayarea.com. a little girl is recovery after a terrifying mountain lion attack at a south bay park. park remains closed and the mountain lion is still on the loose. kris sanchez joins us live in cupertino. and the mountain lion attacks are frightening. >> reporter: marcus was walking when he got the bay area alert and lucky for him he's bigger

than a 6-year-old and these are relatively rare encounters here in california. i tweeted out this picture this morning. just about an hour ago of a ranger arriving with a cage in the back of a truck. the search is now on again this morning for that mountain lion. to reiterate the little girl is okay but treated for a bite on her leg. she was about a mile from the park entrance with her dad and several other adults and kids when the 100-pound mountain lion pounced. >> there were minor injuries, she has a couple of puncture marks but very fortunate that there were adults in the group and they immediately punched the lion away from her. >> reporter: so here is what happened next. park rangers shut down the park about 10:00 yesterday morning, about ten minutes after the attack and then working with the california department of fish and game and searched for the cougar with specially trained dogs. when they find the animal the plan is for dogs to chase the big cat into a tree and where

officials could tranquilize is to get a dna swab to see if it is the same mountain lion that bit the-year-o girl. once it is identified fish and wildlife about announce what will happen next. this is the third final in a year mountain lion shut down this park, rancho saenn antonio and in august it was closed because of a mother and her cubs sighted and a few months after that several trails were closed because of mountain lion activity. something to note, though. laura, you said these are devel -- are relatively wear. there have only been 17 confirmed mountain lion attacks on a human in the last 100 years here in california. so you can still get outside. be acare but don't be afraid. in cupertino, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks, kris. 6:37 now.

in marin county a search for a missing husband and wife. 77-year-old carol kipparski and ian irwin both from the peninsula were last seen on friday. they failed to check out of the airbnb in the inverness over the weekend. they have with requested 60 additional ground searches and dog teams. right now crews are operating under the assumption the pair went out for a hike and never came back. >> our search is focused around the cottage that they rented last week. which includes the northern part of the community of inverners and the state park as well as portions of the national sea shore. we also are conducting a water search of the bay in the area. >> search teams are also using thermal imaging to try to locate the couple. anyone with any informations on where they might be should call authorities immediately. 6:38 and now turning to decision 2020. today senator bernie sanders

boulevard between chase and google over here. folks familiar with the area behind me is the fremont hub. this will get more congested throughout the day and this is a problem. let's look at the map. this is a problem heading toward the b.a.r.t. station. that stop sign, if it is more crowded as it will, you may be hampered for timing to get to your strain. use stevens as an alternate and there is expected to be no additional delays there this morning. the rest of the bay shows a smooth flow of traffic except for the san mateo bridge and west 92 use the dumbarton bridge because that fog may complicate things. we're coming off a nice weekend here in the bay area. >> thinking about the next one. >> planning away. >> it is going to be exactly the pretty much. a lot of sunshine. the warm weather continues. we're going to see that all throughout the week as we check out our seven-day forecast. starts out the warmest today. and then we'll come back to m mid-60s. there is a slight chance of rain in san francisco and yoirs --

dealing with dense fog in the tri-valley. high school hard to tell where this is. this is dublin looking at 580 and the cars are driving on through and quarter mile visibility or less. we're dealing with this for the morning. clearing for the day. i'll show you that forecast coming up in less than five minutes. similar situation here. san mateo bridge westbound, both directions affected by the fog but the crash westbound may require the brakes suddenly near the high-rise. different case at the bay bridge with no back-up or problems for visibility. the low clouds over on the upper right near the maze. well a deadly weekend on contra costa county roads. this is new video from a crash in brentwood on saturday night. police say an unidentified 23-year-old man crashed into a tree near fairfield and central. alcohol is not a factor. also an 18-year-old woman is dead after this crash in antioch. police say it happened yesterday

on james dunnland boulevard. that victim was a passenger ejected from the car. a developing story in southern california where drew carey's former fiancee has been killed in the hollywood hills. police were called to amy hardwick's home are where they found her badly injured. she later died. hardwick had a restraining order against a former boyfriend which recently expired and place later arrested the boyfriend. the host of one comedy show said when he heard the news he thought back to video of him taking part in the show. >> i put the two together and i said wait a second this guy was on the show just a couple of weeks ago and i remembered feeling there is something off with this guy. he had a weird energy. >> dr. hardwick with a marriage counselor with her own youtube channel. she and drew carey broke up in 2018. 6:46 and there is a coordinated effort to oust the president's loyal attorney

general. >> scott mcgrew joins us now. a thousand members of department of justice say bill barr should step down. >> and they've signed an open letter. these are not just signatures from anyone, these are people who spent careers at the justice department and do not have confident barr can remain neutral and independent. barr, of course, has been involved in several controversies, all revealed rather in the past week. starting with the news he had set up a special channel of justice to receive reports from the president's president personal attorney investigating the bidens in ukraine. there are questions whether he stepped to regarding the tush. >> back and then of course you have roger stone. there is no question, barr did what the president wanted and forced federal prosecutors to ask for a lighten sentence for stone. that happened. but was it coincidence? did barr know ahead of time that

covered by fog. there is a look at the bay bridge. it is nice start to the day but having to deal with low visibility in some spots. take a look at the golden gate bridge where you could see the fog. not covering the whole span but we are seeing it very low. only at about 200 to 300 feet off the surface the bay. so we're seeing low visibility. i know it just looks like a blank screen but this is our palo alto camera. and so unfortunately we have this to deal with for the start of the day. and you just want to slow it down even though it is a holiday and there may not be that many people out driving, as we go into the rest of the morning this will clear out and we'll warm up quite a bit. as we check out aum of our microclimates, all right. here we are at noon. we're wanting to take that lunch outside. it is 65 degrees in danville. the valley at about 64 degrees. in san francisco at 61. we'll warm up several more degrees with the valleys reaching the low 70s. look at 2:30 this afternoon,

concord at 70 degrees. cupertino is the 68. and we're at 70 in novato. and then going into the evening, it is slowly cooling off heading toward sunset. and tonight we're going to dip down into the h-- in the low to mid-40s which is normal. what is thought normal is the fact that we haven't seen any rain all month long and still look at a disturbances starting to move in. you could see the clouds reaching into the bay area. still not bringing any rain. but we're seeing the breakdown of the high pressure that kept it so dry. it will allow for a couple of areas of low pressure to move in. but they are just so dry once they get here. as we go into the end of the weekend, we could see some showers starting to work on northern california but much of the bay area will not see the rain. doing into next week, we'll have a chance of showers. this is at the very tail end of the month. and we could finally get some rain. but we are still dry for the them. seven days for the inland areas reaching the low 70s today. mid-60s by the end of the week. we'll put a slight chance of

rain in san francisco's forecast for sunday. as with we could see some of the showers moving in there as well as the north bay. mike, you were concerned about that early morning fog. >> yeah. surface streets. so as folks may not be commuting on the freeway, but definitely driving around town and we could barely see what is going on in fremont. this intersection critical, this is at mallory avenue and fremont boulevard you could barely see and can't see the crews working in the roadway right here. that person just drove right past them in the center. we have one lane blocked by crews continuing to work to repair the signal after it was taken out this morning. now looking at this map and that is the critical portion of fremont. right by the fremont hub. the plaza. the b.a.r.t. station is up here. so folks traveling from the area near 880 up to the b.a.r.t. station, you want to use stevenson because that is clear of any of the traffic control. a smoother drive. one you're used to getting up toward walnut. the freeway moving smoothly except for the san mateo bridge. i've seen the speed sensors

improve across the span. we had a crash blocking two of the three lanes and i was worried because folks couldn't see the slow drive as you approach the high-rise. still can't see great. but at least it looks like the speed sensors are improving i think they are cleared one more lane. we'll check on that. the bay area, the early stall has no back-up or no hallelujah at t -- no metering lights. >> happening now, general motors pulling out from down under. the company ceo is not selling enough vehicles in the markets. general motors has a long history in australia building cars under the holden brand for decades. well next a quick look at top stories including the bay area development in the coronavirus outbreak. two planes carrying americans arrive in the u.s. overnight. one plane in the bay area. ahead what is next for those evacuees which include people now infected with the virus.

welcome back. before you head out of the door, maybe you're off on the this presidents' day. here are the top stories on "today in the bay." >> dozens of cruise ship passengers would may have been exposed to the coronavirus are in the bay area this morning. this is a live look at travis air force base in fairfield where some of them arrived late last night. including 14 passengers who are have already tested positive for the virus. they're expected to be sent to camp roberts on the central coast. one couple we spoke with say that they were not forced to leave the ship which had been quarantined at sea in japan. but they did so once they were encouraged to do so by u.s. health experts. >> you guys want to go back to the u.s., is that right. >> yes. as long as we'll be safe. >> honestly you're much safer got e getting off this ship. >> okay. >> i would not stay on this ship if i were you.

>> the "today" show will have more on the passengers arrival in the u.s. coming up in a few minutes. and in marin county, rescue teams are expected to resume the search for a missing husband and wife. 77-year-old carol kipparski and 72-year-old ian irwin from palo alto were last seen on friday. they failed to check out of the airbnb in inverness over the weekend. the marin county sheriff's office is requesting for dog teams in the search and right now crews operating under an assumption that the pair went for a hike and never came back. and the search continues for a mountain lion that bit a little girl yesterday at rancho san antonio in cupertino. the 6-year-old girl was hiking with with a group when a 100 pound mountain lion jumped out and bit her leg. she is expected to be okay but park rangers shut down the park and will not reopen it until that mountain lion is found. this is the same park rangers
