of the passengers did receive some bad news from medical personnel. nrk nbc's sarah harman is at the travis air force base where evacuated passengers will be quarantined in the states. >> reporter: good morning. 14 of the passengers who traveled back to the u.s. last night tested positive for coronavirus. they were allowed to travel back anyway in special isolation units. their arrival nearly doubles the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus now in the united states this morning, hundreds of americans who were quarantined on "the diamond princess" cruise ship are back on u.s. soil two charter flights from japan, touching down overnight at air force bases in texas and california the flights were not supposed to include any passengers affected by the coronavirus but the state department has now revealed 14 people who tested

pure leaf.(whistling) a very good morning. it is 7:26. i'm laura garcia. dozens of cruise ship passengers who may have been exposed to the coronavirus are in the bay area this morning. they landed late last night at travis air force base in fairfield. the plane included 14 passengers who have already tested positive for the virus. all had been on board a ship quarantined in the sea of japan. right now they're expected to be sent to camp roberts on the central coast. monterey county health leaders not confirming that only saying that camp roberts is preparing for the possible arrival. and keeping tabs on the foggy toerks. the view in dublin.

you could barely see anything. watch out for the visibility. in livermore down to zero. so it is really bad there. we've seen the fog drifts around the east bay and the peninsula. mainly clear elsewhere. so as you head into the afternoon, the sky will clear. temperatures warm up and some of the valleys reach up to 70 degrees. we'll still see this sunshine going into the forecast for the rest of the week. a few more clouds on friday and there will be a slight chance of rain in the north bay on sunday. other than that we have one more dry week in the forecast. mike, how are the roads moving. we have a weather indicator. the spy web showing droplets and thank you for the director pointing that out and it is a breeze. driving through, there is no back-up but you could barely see that though. the fog is the issue and patches through oakland clearing in and kicking in in castro valley and fremont. freeways moving smoothly but in fremont it may affect the visibility at the intersection

let's check your headlines 14 americans are among the hundreds evacuated from a quarantined cruise ship in japan and have tested positive for coronavirus. more than 300 u.s. citizens and family members were taken off the ship and flown back to the united states on two charter flights. one of the flights landed in california overnight and the other in texas passengers will remain under quarantine for two weeks dramatic video from chicago shows a man being rescued from the frigid waters of lake michigan over the weekend. here, you can see, a good samaritan trying to wave for help after seeing a ma struggling in the lake eventually emergency crews across the rescuers go along the bank until they reach the victim. they pulled the man from the icy water and rushed him to the hospital he is listed in critical condition. now, for heart-stopping moments for passengers on an american airways flight. flying in severe cross winds

the a-380 plane was trying to land at london's heathrow airport. you can see the airplane struggling against wind gusts. the plane was practically sideways when it touches down. pilot straightened it out. no one hurt. just a few frayed nerves >> i bet that looks terrifying. now, to a story of a really bizarre accident in the iconic ski resort of vail, colorado authorities are investigating how a skier died in a tragic mishap on the chair lift nbc's joe fryer has the details. joe, good morning to you >> reporter: kristen, craig, good morning after a historic snowstorm hit vail ski resort, visitors flocked to the lifts but today, investigators are trying to figure out how a new jersey man loading a ski lift slipped through his seat and died this morning, visitors at vail, colorado's scenic ski resort are on alert, after officials say a new jersey man was asphyxiated trying to load a chair lift.

the coroner tells vail daily that the man slipped through the gap in the chair and was strangled with his coat. the coat went around his head and neck area, putting his neck in a position that compromised his airway the mountain ski patrol performed cpr on the mountain before transporting varnish to a nearby hospital where he later died report officials are conducting a full investigation adding, the lift has been thoroughly inspected and is operating normally >> it's awful. still not sure exactly how it happened it's a tragedy >> reporter: this is not the first time a passenger became suspended on a chair lift at the resort in 2009, a 48-year-old man was suspended upside down on the same lift for seven minutes before being rescued without injury last year, an 8-year-old boy was seen hanging from a chair lift

at grouse mountain resort. that was in vancouver. young teens created a makeshift crash pad to catch the boy >> wow, they're heros. >> reporter: also this weekend on another mountain near vail, an avalanche killed two colorado men snowmobiling in the back country. late sunday, rescue crews and volunteers recovered the bodies of the men who were buried under snow and ice >> hiked into where they were and just started searching with our beacons, probing, going everywhere >> reporter: officials are still investigating but say the avalanche may have been triggered by the group's snowmobiles. >> more and more people are coming up and enjoying the back country. there's a lot of risk associated with that. >> just a terrible story on so many levels. any indication at this point how the guy fell through this chair? >> reporter: it's not clear yet. we know the seats installed on that chair lift fold if there isn't anyone sitting on them the coroner said witnesses

good morning. right now at 7:56 we've been dealing with fog in parts of the bay area. in fact this is a dublin camera where you could barely see anything. every now and then you see a few cars making it through with the view. now we're seeing visibility cut down to zero in livermore and the rest of the tri-valley. but then you head over to oakland and visibility cut down to about a tenth of a mile. so we've seen that fog drifting around mainly the east bay. as we go into the afternoon, this is where with we'll have the warmer temperatures. reaching the upper 60s and low 70s today with some sunshine. we do have more sun in the forecast going into the rest of the week. with just a slight cooldown still feeling very comfortable out there even as we go into the weekend. upper 60s on saturday and more clouds moving in as some rain arrives in the north bay. we'll track that. let's see what is happening on

the roads. well, you could see 101 in palo alto, very light. and low clouds and better visibility than half an hour ago. the east bay and the tri-valley the fog most affecting your freeway. the sensors through treatment. still okay but the signal is still out so watch out there is four-way traffic control. more fog through portions of the east bay. we'll take a live out there. oakland -- we can't see but traffic smoothly below the clouds and this is the spiderweb and the bay bridge toll plaza. and we'll have that in the berkeley curve so bee careful coming up to the bay bridge and across the span. back to you w. on all out search for a mountain lion that bit a 6-year-old girl's leg. yesterday's attack shut down the park and it won't reopen until the mountain lion is found. link to the latest on the search

14 passengers who were evacuated overnight tested positive for coronavirus. they were allowed to travel back and held in special isolation units on board the plane. their arrival in the u.s. nearly doubles the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus now in the u.s. this morning, hundreds of americans who were quarantined on "the diamond princess" cruise ship are back on u.s. soil. two charter flights from japan, touching down overnight at air force bases in texas and california. the flights were not supposed to include any passengers affected by the coronavirus. but the state department has now revealed that 14 people who tested positive were allowed to travel. those positive diagnoses not coming until they were already off the ship. they spent the more than 12-hour flight in isolation chambers seen here, filmed by a passenger, sheryl maleski.

after nearly two weeks in quarantine, she and her husband decided it was time for their extended vacation to come to an end. >> you're safer getting off the ship. >> okay. >> i would not stay on this ship if i were you. >> i have to put my mask on and get going. >> reporter: the maleskis were evacuated by american teams in hazmat suits. a carefully orchestrated operation. >> the bus will take you to the airplane. airplane takes you to the united states. then you have the passport. good with that? >> reporter: to avoid exposure before getting on the flight. >> well, we're exhausted but we're on the plane. >> reporter: among the americans who chose to stay on "the diamond princess", matthew smith. >> the u.s. offer was break this quarantine early, get into a bus with a bunch of other people who we don't know how they've been doing with quarantine. get into a plane and fly back to the u.s. with those same people. >> reporter: what happens next

diagnosed melanoma cases in the united states caused by sun exposure. nbc medical correspondent dr. john torres is here. good morning. >> good to see you. >> let's talk about what we know. we know that 91% of u.v.-related melanoma cases were diagnosed between 2011 and 2015. what's going on here? why? >> we've known for a while that sun exposure can contribute to melanoma. but there's environmental factors, genetic factors. we weren't exactly sure how much. i think this is surprising people to a certain extent, that it's that much. 91% overall for non-hispanic whites, fair-skinned individuals. 94% of melanomas are caused by u.v. exposure, meaning the sun. if we can minimize that, we reduce the risk of getting melanoma. get the message out there, and watch out for the sun. >> the thing that struck me, was the places where this is happening. we can put it on the screens

this morning on "today's consumer" credit card debt reserve bank of new york reported last week that americans owe a record $930 billion in credit card debt. that breaks down to $6,200 for every consumer with a credit card in this country if you don't pay it off every month, you're owing even more. even if you don't spend a dime here with ideas of how to get out from under the credit card debt, senior correspondent stephanie ruhle.

good morning to you. $6200 sounds like a lot of money. you surprised by that? >> surprised and worried about it just because you're feeling good and you have a credit card, doesn't mean you should swipe. that $6200, the big number,s and portion in serious delinquency, it is more than 90 days that yo owe the money, it is the highest it's been in the country in eight years. this is worrisome, craig >> a lot of folks are behind on that debt, as well, right? >> yeah. let's take a look at what this looks like for you say you owe $6,000 your credit card is a 17% interest if you have a new one, it is probably 17.3% the end of the year, if you were only paying interest, it is an extra $1,020 a year. you haven't even started to pay down the principal the collections agencies aren't calling you, but do you want to owe an extra $1,000 a year >> that's how they're making money, too.

>> uh-huh. >> let's talk about ways that rein in the debt >> okay. what do i do to pay down the principal? look at the bills you have out there. how can i transfer to a lower rate you can get a new credit card. some right now for zero balance in your first year if you think you can pay it down in a year, transfer over to that you need to pay attention to the credit score if you open up new cards, that's not so good. remember, paying the minimum is going, as i said, to keep the collections agencies away, but it is not going to save you. you need to start chipping away at the principal if you don't do that, you'll never get out from under it. it is easy for me to say, craig, the credit agencies really like it if you pay in full every month. that's unrealistic we know most people can't. what you need to do is get a plan >> what if you come into a few extra bucks. say you won your super bowl pool or oscar wool. you have a few hundred bucks

work overtime maybe. is it better to pay down the credit debt, or is it better to put the money into a savings account or rainy day fund? >> whatever has the highest interest i want you to think about paying down debt like a treat a treat shouldn't be, go out to eat, buy shoes it should be get the pit out of my stomach that i'm feeling because i owe this much money. if you don't work on these things, i want you to go on a diet, a savings diet >> sound like my wife. >> what if you cut up your credit cards you might keep one for an emergency. if you cut up the credit cards and were just spending cash, you'd live in a different way. i want you to think about your pain points. where does craig like spending when i walked in today, you know what i saw an awful lot of iced coffee cups people were at the bakery. it feels good. at 5 bucks a pop, you're in the hundreds of dollars quickly. if that's how you like to spend, you might need to change your route on the walk to work.

take a different way think about the brands you like to follow on social media. start un-following them so you won't be tempted if you're not tempted, your favorite store, their website might have your credit card in there automatically. take it out. i want to give you a hurdle. >> what is this cash diet? >> i want you to go to a casino. how do you bet cash no vegas figures it out when you have chips, you're more likely to spend. if you don't have anything to swipe, if you have to pay with cash, you'll be much more unlikely to do it. in you do want to treat yourself, i ask you to wait 24 hours. say, i'll put this on hold and think about it 24 hours from now, if i really need it, really want it, maybe i dip in then. >> all right stephanie ruhle, valuable tips thank you. >> cash diet, craig. >> kristen welker, smells good in the studio. oh, you're not with the food >> we have one more excitement i know you always like the food.
