cross much of the bay area. i'll let you know if there is any chance of rain in the forecast coming up. but mike saw a back-up in san jose. i did. you showed 101 through palo alto and the peninsula. 101 was showing brake lights tapping toward allen rock and the concern is there is a disabled vehicle past 880 north toward the airport but the lanes should be cleared and we've sorted out the brake lights to back to your normal pattern we think. southbound there may be a distraction at blossom hill off-ramp. this was an overnight crash and i'm watching that traffic flow but no lanes are reported blocked. rest of the bay is fine. a back-up at the bay bridge and we'll talk about b.a.r.t. coming up. back to you. >> thanks, mike. you remember the two missing palo alto hikers. many people believed they were dead. they are very much alive this morning and continuing to recover. this is after being rescued over the weekend in marin. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is outside of the hospital. and do we have a better idea of when the two could go home.

>> reporter: good morning. we're hearing it may be a few days but we know for a fact that they are recovering behind me in this hospital in marin county and it is miracle they survived this whole ordeal. here are pictures of the couple that we're talking about. p carol kiparsky and ian irwin both of palo alto both in their 70s and they were rescued on saturday after spending eight days in the dense vegetation in marin county. they brought no food, water or cell phones with them on their valentine's day hike near the rental cabin in the inverness area. a new photo shows the dense brush and poison oak and vines they were trapped in for days. and officials say that they ate off of a fern and drank from a puddle just to stay alive. now here is members of the rescue team recounting the story in more detail. >> they went out literally for a ten-minute walk and it got dark all of a sudden and got difficult to see and the next thing they know it they couldn't see their hand in front of their face and so they transitioned to

crawling. >> reporter: now as far as injuries go, they did suffer hypothermia, dehydration and cuts and scrapes and the family said the couple did meet with with the rescuers and agrateful for the help and dedication but expected to remain at the hospital to recover from the injuries for the next few days. reporting live, pete suratos, for "today in the bay." >> glad they were found alive. thanks, pete. 6:03 now. decision 2020 in south carolina, the next stop after saturday's nevada caucus. the democratic contenders will debate there tomorrow night ahead of next saturday's primary. "today in the bay" tracie potts is live in washington this morning with a closer look at what to expect. tracie? >> reporter: hi, good morning, laura. good morning, everyone. so after winning nevada, bernie sanders is now the one to beat. and joe biden hopes to do it with a key endorsement this week. the powerful south carolina congressman jim clyburn said he's going to, we've confirmed

he's going to endorse biden on wednesday. after placing second in nevada and slipping in national polls, former vice president joe biden told msnbc overnight he's counting on south carolina to pull is a head. >> they know me. they know me really well and they know -- look, they know i've had barack's back and they know that bernie wanted to primary barack in 2012 and didn't like what we were doing and tried to take down obamacare. >> and now trying to flip the script in texas, a republican stronghold. >> if our people stand together and come out to vote, we're going to win here in texas. >> reporter: sanders said he learned a month ago that russia was trying to interfere in his campaign. and president trump's. the national security adviser said there is no evidence. >> i've heard that russia would like bernie sanders to win the democratic nomination.

earlier the president attended a rally at the world's largest cricket stadium in north west india. tens of thousands of people were there. more coverage of the visit is coming throughout the newscast. >> new scenes playing out on the streets of san francisco. look at this. as more side show activity wakes up neighbors and then leaves the neighborhood trashed. it has some people expressing frustration with the police response. >> reporter: let's check in live with kris sanchez. what are people saying about it. >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. police said they were there around the side shows that erupted around midnight on sunday morning. and here they are in the upper market at market and clayton at just one with of the side shows. in the mission district at 23rd and delores hundreds of spectators with were watching the dangerous maneuvers just as they were in the richard district at geary and 30th. san francisco police tell us the side shows from 50 to 100

vehicle started after midnight on sunday morning near candlestick park and then continued for hours. witnesses say that the illegal side shows are frustrating but watching police take no action was worse. >> honestly, it is pretty frustrating as a resident to wake up to 2:00 a.m. to the sound of chaos and complete lawlessness on the streets. >> reporter: we asked san francisco police about that and in a statement they told us, we will be working to determine the identity of the persons and vehicles participating in the side shows anz will use all legal resources to prosecute those involved. officers did not write any tickets on the spot or make any arrest ares but they did shoot video and took notes. as you likely know, legal side shows pop up in cities all around the bay area. all of the big cities and even some of the smaller ones. they're very hard to track because a lot of the spectators and the drivers organize quickly

via social media. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest there, kris. 6:07 now. when it comes to "making it in the bay," the quality of life has gotten worse over the last years a 10 point spike from last year. bay area news group also finds 47% are thinking about leaving the bay area. also up 2% from last year. and nearly 10% say they have definite plans to leave this year. at 6:08. as we head out of the door, we're dealing with dense fog as we look at the south county and the tri-valley as well as the north bay. as we deal with the fog dripping around, we'll drive through that and then it clears out in the next couple of hours. as we check out our temperatures right now, we're in the mid to upper 30s.

34 in napa. and 37 in santa rosa. but we are seeing some mid-40s in san fernando and palo alto. and hen checking out our high temperatures this afternoon. expect a high of 70 degrees in livermore. 71 in concord. and 67 in oakland today. with a high of 72 in santa rosa. really nice. we'll talk about the rain chances ahead in the forecast. and marcus, you have a delay for b.a.r.t. riderize. >> for the warm springs line, it sounds like an equipment problem on the tracks south of hayward so that is in place for the time being. that is just a slow start or a slow delay getting a vehicle in from overnight road or track work. so we'll check on that. shouldn't be a problem. no surprises for that type of issue being reported. over here there is a little bit of a surprise. eastbound 84 sensors turning yellow means slowing toward newark from the palo alto and

interconnected everything is the world economically. and another company quit the rsa security conference and verizon over the weekend would not attend, becoming the third major corporation to pull out. i mentioned inuit off the top. the software company has a new ceo. the "wall street journal" said sunday they want to buy credit karma for $7 billion. intuit best known for tax software. and speaking of taxes. this is purely anecdotal. i was getting my taxes done at the kitchen table and last year families got caught off guard owing way, way more than they expected because they didn't make the proper adjustments after the 2018 tax law. to be clear, they didn't necessarily pay more tax but they owed sometimes five digits. los lost -- lots of money. my tax guy said people did not go to hr, the families he's helping and get their adjustment. >> make the adjustment.

take a ride on a horse today. >> or walk. >> a horse riding forecast. >> just get outside. it is going to be a nice day. still feeling like spring. well above normal temperatures. and we've also seen some patches of fog but it is all clear here as we get a live look at the bay bridge. and it is going to be a nice, sunny day. so as you step out, it does feel cool in some spots. in san francisco we're in the upper 40s. as you head out later in the morning, starting to teal milder but still probably jacket weather at least in early afternoon there in the city. and looking at the inland areas, this is where temperatures are slightly warmer, reaching 63 degrees at noon in fremont and 68 in napa. and then low to mid 70s in some the spots. and we have the warmest temperatures expected today in the east bay and the valleys -- ore rather the north bay and east bay vals will be warm. and then tonight down to the upper 40s.

looking at the wide view of what is happening here, where we are still seeing very dry weather here and then some clouds approaching from the west. it will take a while before it gets here as high pressure slows down the storm systems from coming in but that high pressure is on the move as we head toward the end of the week, some slight rain chances but we may have better rain chances next week but of course that is also next month so we may make it through the whole month of february without a drop of rain. and our temperatures will warm up. we're going to start out with some upper 60s for the workweek. and then the upper 70s by thursday. coming down for the weekend, once again watching out for the slight chance of rain on sunday into next week. and mike is seeing slowing for the tri-valley now. >> i am. this is big view, the peninsula. the delay we with saw eastbound at dumb brid-- at dumbarton bri.

and it is the tri-valley where we do see 84 westbound and southbound 680. 680 is showing slowing through pleasanton. and now registering as foggy in patches throughout the tri-valley, it is very possible there is a patchle fog as it builds through pleasanton and into sunol and we'll track that and look for crashes reported. no major problems but low clouds for the dublin camera. there is a metering lights keeping them from flooding on to the freeway but it is moving nicely for west 580 out of the altamont. the south bay a slowing approaching blossom hill but i believe that traffic break is clearing because the speeds a are -- are recovering and that is counter commute. >> still ahead here on "today in the bay," angry parents demanding answers why it may come as soon as today for the oakland high school now closed due to toxic ground water. plus nbc bay area responds. >> she spotted some problems

bryant this morning. >> they sold a lot of tickets to that. we'll stream it on our website at nbcbayarea.com. right now let's look at our forecast. nice looking morning. >> it is a beautiful start to the day. but we've seen fog drifting around in the tri-valley as we look outside in dublin, just watch out for that. we've also seen low visibility in napa as well as san martin and that is starting to make its wau through the south county and into san jose. once all of the clearout we'll have sunshine in the low 70s so another couple of hours before skies clear. and as we head over to mike, we have more drivers crossing the bay. >> which is what we would expect but it is causing slowing. across the san mateo bridge, you're all right in the flat section as we look at the map i've picked out speed sensors in the area on other side of the bay, in the decline you're in the 50s and that is great the toward foster city. foster city catamaran between catch and all there is a tree

down so that may affect the local traffic but the driving just fine. slowing for 880 toward the dumbarton bridge and you saw that on the sensors. and now pushing up into silicon valley and the berkeley curve and the metering lights are on at the bay bridge. back to you. i mentioned we're watching the market. they're having an effect because the coronavirus is spreading and quickly. it is now hitting parts of europe hard with italy having the most cases of coronavirus than any other country besides china. take a look at this new video from overnight. these are the streets of italy where with more than a dozen cities in northern italy are actually on lockdown this morning. not a lot of people out on the streets as normal. health officials are trying to stop the spread of the virus. now, in italy alone, more than 200 people infected. five of them are dead. worldwide 2600 people have been killed with nearly 80,000

infections. let's check in now with bob redell standing by at travis air force base with with a key decision coming down about what to do with the evacuees brought here to the bay area. bob? >> reporter: you're talking about the evacuees brought from china. some who are quarantined here. especially from that cruise ship in japan. that is stuff that developed over the past couple of weeks. well the cdc, laura, has now ordered the people here at travis would have tested positive for coronavirus and quarantined here to leave the base. because there are not enough hospital beds here in our area to give them the specialized care that they need. the feds plan to send up to 50 people to the fairview developmental center, 400 miles south of here in costa mesa and a facility that the state runs for people with mental disabilities and happen to have the space. but the city of costa mesa does the not want those people in their area. out of concerns for resident safety. the city went to court and a judge issued a temporary restraining order to stop the

hoff of the people and a hearing for later this afternoon to decide whether or not the people who have tested positive at travis to allow them to go down to costa mesa. live outside of travis air force base in fairfield, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we'll follow this one with. thank you, bob. 6:34. more details about the coronavirus concerns impacting the san francisco convention dollars. it turns out the rsa cybersecurity conference that kicks off today, attendance will be lower. corporate sponsors and companies like verizon and ibm have now backed out. more than 40,000 people are expected to attend. happening today, leaders at oakland mcclymonds high school plan to update parents and students and staff about the discovery of toxic ground water. school has been shut down since last thursday after the discovery of a chemical called tce which could cause cancer. it is also airborne but preliminary results show that the surrounding air is safe. two meetings will be held today

at 8:30 this morning and the other at 5:30 p.m. at west oakland middle school. students are scheduled to return to class tomorrow or wednesday at yet to be determined location. well the former director at the heart of san francisco city hall corruption probe is reportedly giving investigators plenty of information to work with. federal agents arrested mohammed nuru last month. he began talking with investigators soon afterwards while still on the payroll with public works. since then prosecutors have served ten subpoenas on companies and nonprofits including pg&e and recology and the sorts say it is likely that the cooperation will help him if he's ever convicted and then sentenced. in the north bay governor newsom wants to set up emergency homeless shelters on a piece of land in santa rosa. the press democrat reports the governor's plan is to make shelters on the open space between farmer's land and spring lake regional park. the land is owned by caltrans

and part of the governor's plan to convert 300 sites across california into homeless shelters. santa rosa city council needs to approve the governor's offer. 6:36 right now. a difficult and emotional morning is ahead in los angeles. thousands will be gathering in just a few hours to honor and remember kobe bryant, his daughter gigi and seven others who died in a helicopter crash in the hills just outside of los angeles. >> "today in the bay" jay gray is live this morning outside of staples center where kobe played. and the community have been gathering together and that ceremony will take place there today. jay? >> reporter: hey, marcus and laura, good morning to you. the date of the memorial is no coincidence. 2-24, the jersey numbers of gigi and kobe bryant. it is his wife b vanessa that planned it memorial and very important to her.

the emotion that is here, the tributes that have continued for more than -- or for almost a month are really evidence that kobe bryant's legacy stretches far beyond this arena. we saw hundreds of thousands gathered here immediately after the crash, 20,000 expected inside of the arena today and fans watching across the state and the country and the world and fans there in the bay area weighing in on what kobe meant. >> i think it is the energy he had. even as a player he just had he that natural energy that drew people toward him. >> he definitely brought it to every game he played. >> he was a great player, but i feel bad about what happened with him. >> i have just been hearing his name growing up and i feel like he's a good person. >> reporter: again, this tribute not only for kobe bryant but for his daughter gigi and seven others who died this that crash.

the price of tickets to this morning's memorial $24.02, all the way to $224. again a nod to the jersey numbers of the bryants. and that money will go to his youth sports foundation. so a special morning with meaning here marcus and laura. >> so many people want to be a part of "todatoday's ceremony. and the faa is continuing with the investigation into the crash. do we have any information on what may have caused it? >> reporter: yeah, they're looking very closely at the weather conditions and dense fog over the hills outside of los angeles that morning and there seem to be some confusion with the pilot. they have said within the last few days that the pilot had been reprimanded in the past for flying in poor weather. again, though, they point out this is still an ongoing investigation and could be a full year before they have a final report. >> so many families affected by

than five minutes. and in the tri-valley, a couple of new issues. a traffic alert issued by chp up here coming into san ramon and dublin. but much more slowing farther south. a new crash and i'll explain what is going on for both cases coming up. new overnight, a lot of people evacuated after a fire at a peninsula apartment complex. someone was cooking when the flames got too big and set fire to the cabinets. those flames then spread to two more units. one person who lives at the complex is concerned about the fires all of the time. >> this place is a bunch of electrical issues. they have cords just hanging everywhere. and it is just -- it should be condemned. nothing gets fimmed. there is no maintenances, no groundskeeper, no nothing. >> no one was hurt. right now two people are displaced. murder charges have been filed against two 13-year-old boys suspected of starting a fire that killed two

firefighters in the central valley. >> police say they were taken into custody after they were spotted running away from the library shortly after flames started. initially both boys were charged with manslaughter. firefighters patrick jones and raymond figueroa were killed when the city library went up in flames last week. arguments if washington this morning over whether the russians are interfering in our elections again. >> and whose side they're taking, scott mcgrew. >> maybe more than one side. we know the russians want to sow discord and doubt b and it is certainly working. on friday members of congress were briefed russians were once again trying to interfere in our election. as we reported friday, experts had predicted that would happen. just like it did in 2016. we've been warned of this for many years. the argument, though, seems to be who are the russians favoring. bernie sanders told "the washington post" over the weekend u.s. intelligence had briefed him that the russians were trying to interfere in the

democratic primary and secretly trying to help him campaign. members of the house were briefed last week, russian operatives were supporting trump's re-election. the white house national security adviser, though, told abc's george stephanopoulos, he believed the russians were helping sanders for sure. >> well there are reports that they want bernie sanders to get elected president. that is no surprise. he honeymooned in moscow, the president has rebuilt the american military to an extent we haven't seen since ronald reagan so i don't think it is any surprise that russia or china or iran would want somebody out other president trump. >> now, o'brien had said that he didn't -- had not seen any evidence that sanders w-- sandes was being helped but he believed that trump is not getting help. >> i haven't seen any intelligence that russia is

doing anything to attempt to get president trump re-elected. i think this is a -- the same old story that we've heard before. >> o'brien said he thought the house didn't intend to believe them to believe that the russians were supporting president trump's re-election. president trump and the first lady are in india and getting an incredible reception. every last seat in this cricket stadium filled as the president greets primary modi. the trump's later visited the taj mahal as people cheered along the route. the "today" show will have more coverage of the president and first lady at 7:00 a.m. instead of telling you about twitter, back to the big board at the new york stock exchange. that is getting better. we were down 900 points on the dow to begin with as the world and the financial markets worry about coronavirus. >> that is right. well 6:48 now. and guess you could say the bay area is going hollywood. people in san francisco talking about the explosions and

sunday morning from 5:00 and ran through 9:00 a.m. and that is a start for those who heard the film action from 6:00 to midnight. some folks report seeing stunt doubles jumping from windows that would have made me jump out of my skin. the mayor london breed might get a film credit out of this. she is likely to make a cameo as herself according to the san francisco examiner. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> we're volunteering our talents if they want us. they always have news people. >> with the microphone -- >> thanks, kris. 6:50 this morning and let's take a look at the forecast for you. >> they have some great weather out there for film today in san francisco. no fog there but we've seen it work inland and so we've seen some dense fog in parts of the north bay, the south county and the tri-valley. that is a live look in dublin right now. as we're seeing some of the fog drifting around there. visibility down to about a quarter of a mile.

look at san martin, down to zero there. and we've seen it riding up along 101 and so it may be moving into south san jose in downtown san jose and napa now down to a quarter mile visibility. but once that clears out we have a beautiful day. high temperatures reaching into the upper 60s and low 70s. and more sunshine in that forecast. as you check out the bottom of the screen and here is why. we still have this bubble of high pressure. it is causing the air to sink. it keeps the skies clear but there will be changes ahead going into sunday. and possibly next week. we may get some rain in here. it doesn't look like a significant storm but maybe some changes heading into next month. in the near term we're still having some very dry conditions and temperatures warming up. upper 70s in the inland areas by the end of the week. and mike, you're seeing more traffic trouble in the tri-valley. >> and part of that is because of the fog that you talked about, kari. here is our view it from the dublin camera. only visibility for the parking

lot and now kind of see the freeway. let's get out to maps and we're talking about an issue complicated by the fog. slow for 680 heading south and here is 580 and the blob showing where the fog will be located. now there are a couple of issues on 680 in the commute direction southbound. one is down toward bernal where there is a crash blocking one lane and that will be an issue but it looks like they may get cleared quickly. they may have cleared it in the last few minutes. seeing seed recovery. and the other issue is a traffic alert from chp. a modular home on a trailer blocking the slow lane and fog in the area so they're worried folks won't see that through san ramon. and the rest of the bay standard if not light. back to you. >> thank you, mike. 6:52 now. and the u.s. extradition hearing for julian assange is scheduled to begin in london today. he's accused of working with u.s. army intelligence analyst chelsea manning to leak hundreds of thousands of classified documents. assange claims that the trump

welcome back. a quick look at the top stories we're following this monday morning. >> two missing palo alto hikers most everyone sadly believed were dead, the great news is that they are very much alive this morning. this is a live look at marin general hospital where the couple are now recovering. rescuers found carol kiparsky and ian irwin on saturday after they spent eight days lost in marin county wilderness with no food, no water, thought even their cell phones. they actually just left for a short valentine's day hike near the rental cabin. then we have new photos that show some of the brush and poison oak and vines that they were trapped in. you see there the terrain.

rescuers say they ate off of a fern and drank from a puddle to stay alive. the couple is being treated for hypothermia, dehydration and cuts and scrapes. their family is hoping for the release before the end of the week. a judge today may decide the fate of 50 coronavirus patients quarantined at travis air force base. the cdc has already approved the move to a facility in costa mesa, citing a shortage of hospital beds. but costa mesa leaders say they weren't included in the decision. they're trying to block the move. and more details this morning, coronavirus concerns are impacting the san francisco convention dollars. turnout por the rsa cybersecurity conference that kicks off today will likely have lower attendance. companies like verizon and ibm have now backed out. more than 40,000 people are expected to attend. and take a look at how the coronavirus news is hitting stocks this morning. a live look at the big board. down about 782, 783 points.
