president kennedy knew settling for half-measures wasn't good enough. so when candidates say we can't guarantee health care for all, make college affordable for all, combat climate change, or create a world at peace, remember that america is best when we strive to do big things, even when it's hard. i'm bernie sanders and i approve this message.
8:37 am
8:38 am
all this month, we've bee with our series "breaking through. and today, we bring you the story of a young man trying to make his mark on an nfl franchise. >> remember this name. you know, being a cleveland browns fan, the team hasn't won since 2002 the owners have brought in andrew berry as the new general manager. at 32 years old, he might be the new perspective that team needs. >> our very distinct privilege to introduce the new gm of the cleveland browns, the youngest gm in cleveland history, andrew berry. >> reporter: andrew berry was driving to the airport with his wife and kids when he found out he got the general manager job his reaction, telling. did you pull over? >> no. we were trying to catch a
8:39 am
flight we were racing to the airport at the time we exchanged hugs and a few tears and were ready to go >> reporter: berry is a guy that focuses on his mission whether it's getting to the airport on time or taking on one of the most beleaguered teams in nfl history, the cleveland browns how much pressure do you feel personally, to turn this operation around >> i don't know that pressure is the right word it's really more excitement for me that's the overwhelming sense. >> reporter: a twin growing up in maryland, berry's parents put academics over athletics >> the mandate was, all right, we're going to pull you out of all of the activities if you don't get straight-"as" and do well in school we wanted to be on the football field, the basketball court, play baseball. >> reporter: the deal played off. named co-valedictorian with his
8:40 am
brother, he headed to harvard where he played quarterback and kept up the studies. you have a masters in computer science. >> that's right. a bachelors in economics and a masters in commuter science. >> reporter: he toiled as a scout for the colts. his travels for the team included a memorable stop in cleveland. >> it was rain, sleet, blowing sideways, miserable conditions to be outside. the team wasn't doing well and you would have thought that it was a playoff game in january, with how the fans were responding to the team that was my first exposure to the cleveland browns' fan base the team holds a special place to the area of northeast ohio. >> reporter: one of the knocks on your hire, you were vice president of player personnel during a stretch where the team won one game in two seasons. what do you say to that criticism? >> the focus was a little more on accumulating assets, whether it was draft picks, young players, you know, cap space, to set a foundation for long-term
8:41 am
success. but at the end of the day, it is about winning. and that has to be the focus and we didn't win enough games >> reporter: berry moved to the philadelphia eagles in 2019, where they won enough games to head to the playoffs now, he's returning to the browns this time, not just as the youngest general manager in the nfl, but as one of only two black gms in the league. the nfl, as you know, has been criticized for its, shall we say, lack of a commitment to diversity in management. what are the benefits of having a diverse coaching staff >> not just how old someone is or how someone looks or their gender it's diversity of experience diversity of thought process the kind of diversity that allows different perspectives to come to the table when you're making decisions and trying to drive on-field results that creates a better product on the field. >> reporter: berry says he prizes those perspectives, relying on the browns team and also his faith to get him through this first year. i noticed you wear a cross
8:42 am
around your neck what role does your faith play in all this? >> both my parents' fathers, my grandfathers, they were pastors, ministers in the south every sunday we went to church we read the bible as a family on a weekly basis and faith has always been a big part of my journey and my life that's not something i'm ashamed to say >> reporter: the browns put their faith in berry but believing will happen when the team starts winning. do you make the playoffs next year >> i wish i had a crystal ball our focus will be working hard on a daily basis and working together >> wow >> if anyone can turn around the cleveland browns and that will be a herculean task. >> it beats the goldman sachs gig. >> if he does it, he will be a hero for the ages. >> you know cleveland. >> i love that town. >> nothing but upset do you remember when producers texted us and said send us your favorite sandwiches >> yeah. >> legit happened. let me take the road to
8:43 am
flavortown and tell you what's going on we have provided guy fieri with our lunch sandwiches of choice, for two reasons. first, guy, great to have you. you're going to judge it and help us elevate it bring it to the next level >> right now, what i'm seeing is a great starting point which one is yours >> i'm the turkey -- arugula this is my gem right here. >> this is an actual sandwich i make you have a great california look going on here. >> good times. guy is in the building vo: while other candidates argue
8:44 am

about health care, mike bloomberg has a record of doing something. as mayor, he protected women's reproductive rights. expanded health coverage to 700,000 new yorkers. and decreased infant-mortality rates to historic lows. as president, he'll build on obamacare, cap medical costs, and will always protect a woman's right to choose. mike bloomberg: a record on health care nobody can argue about. mike: i'm mike bloomberg and i approve this message. we're back with "today we're back with "today food." and the self-proclaimed mayor of flavortown we're talking about guy fieri. >> most know guy for his cookbooks, numerous restaurants around the country he's gained a loyal following as the host of food network
8:46 am
that show is in its 32nd season. >> watch it every night. >> thank you very much >> i know. >> guy has a brand-new competition show, "tournament of champions. it pits star chefs against each other to figure out whose cuisine reigns supreme but, first, mr. mayor, we need you to judge our competition but first, tell me about the show, though >> tournament of champions it's going to air march 4th. >> okay. >> i brought my favorite chefs the heavy hitters of the industry 16 of them go head-to-head i hope they're my friends after this >> are they competitive? >> they're all very competitive. and the tournament is about blind judging. the chefs came and cooked and the judges came in and didn't know whose food they were eating >> i like that >> we'll see if everybody is still on talking terms >> someone will remain your friends. >> okay. >> speaking of competition, we thought you were the best to do
8:47 am
this everybody chose their favorite sandwich let's start with al's. what do you have here? >> grilled cheese. >> and burger. he was rocking the house in south beach. >> you start with a good american cheese or a cheddar if you want to go upscale and bacon. >> all of the bacon, al? >> all of the bacon. >> i was just making sure he wasn't going halfway with the bacon >> and grilled onions just for a little sweetness instead of butter, i like to use mayo >> we know al is on the inside track of food. i know he has this exactly right. he's been developing this fantastic crust on the outside of the bread that extra fat helps cook the bread up and butter has a chance to burn
8:48 am
faster a great technique. >> are you trying these? >> i don't know. i don't want to -- i'm not going to take off al's plate >> go ahead. >> i think we need you to. >> okay. hold that thought. >> the caramelized onion is dynamite >> we have to get to carson. >> i know time is of the essence. these are ingredients i would have in my house >> i love avocado. i'm going to take whole wheat bread. i have mustard and mayo. a little squirt. >> too much dijon and you take away from it >> correct i love cheddar cheese. i'm going to get tomato in there. >> a little salt >> salt is the thing that gets missed i love arugula >> i take arugula and olive oil in there >> getting after it right now. >> you want to come on "toc" next year, "tournament of champions" should i have a celebrity edition? >> carson versus al. i like it. >> nice job. >> try it. >> let's -- look at this the key, though, the key is a little salt and that peppery
8:49 am

8:50 am
>> yes, i am. >> working the judge >> what is this stuff down here? >> my only recommendation was a little jicama. >> oh, come on talk about it some more. >> the avocado and balsamic is a great combo. if you didn't want the crouton, that's where the carbs come in. >> gotcha. >> this is the way we do cooking demos. i just come in and taste everything >> this sandwich, like myself, is very simple i start with a brioche bun a little mayor >> you know the brioche is key >> that is key i buy whatever turkey is on sale at the whole foods >> to save a little extra cash >> yeah. i don't want to go broke on the turkey >> turkey is one of the great lunch meats you can make at
