7:11 am
in fact, going to happen it did yesterday it was an emotional announcement this is an important state for bernie sanders, too. he is the front-runner in the overall race and if sanders has a strong showing here, he could be unstoppable heading into super tuesday in a few days. now, it is worth noting -- this is an interesting story line former president obama's attorney is filing a cease and desist leather of-- letter of a pro-trump campaign, not o filiafil affiliated president trump campaign, asking it to pull a television ad that's running here that attacks biden, using part of obama's book that the obama team is just taken out of context. obama's spokesperson called the ad, quote, despicable, adding it's straight out of the republican disinformation playbook meanwhile, former new york mayor michael bloomberg is not competing here in south carolina he is making an aggressive push
7:12 am
ahead of super tuesday and bloomberg speaking out overnight in a town hall right here, pressed on why democrats should trust him, a former republican, to lead the democratic party here is what he had to say. >> my democratic credentials, i spoke for hillary clinton at the dnc convention in philadelphia in 2016. i've spent a lot of time working on democratic causes. >> that was bloomberg's first town hall. as for south carolina, our polls show just 9% of democrats here are undecided. craig, i was out yesterday, talking to voters. a lot of them tell me they're energized and ready to go to the polls saturday we'll have to see. >> our poll, joe biden's campaign got some good news this morning. >> yep. >> from the paper of record here in south carolina. this, of course, is "the charleston post and courier. biden's lead in the state has actually widened to give you some perspective here, even if joe biden does win on saturday, a lot of folks will be looking at the size of the margin of that victory
7:13 am
four years ago, hillary clinton beat bernie sanders by some 45 percentage points to give you some perspective as you mentioned, kristen, that highly coveted endorsement from congressman clyburn coming at a time when biden needs support from african-american voters in particular bernie sanders has surpassed him when it comes to black voters nationwide shortly after that endorsement i caught up with the former vice president for an exclusive sit-down >> if you send me out of south carolina with a victory, there will be no stopping us. >> reporter: joe biden in desperate need of a win, betting big in south carolina. he's staking his candidacy on a major win in this state, one that could give him much-needed momentum to challenge bernie sanders' front runner status why do you think bernie sanders has been able to convince so many people, especially so many young people, that he's their guy?
7:14 am
>> well, bernie has done a very good job of working this for the last five or six years, and it's really appealing when you're in a situation where you're struggling to pay for your college tuition, when you're having difficulty in being able to get health care just to promise you everything as people begin to look at what's going on, they're going to have a slightly different view look, the idea that there's going to be this revolution, americans aren't looking for a revolution they're looking for progress. >> reporter: but mr. vice president, some seem keen on a revolution >> well, some do but look at the numbers. he's not going to come anywhere near generating the participation of young folks that barack did in 2008. there's no evidence of that yet. >> reporter: bernie sanders won nevada, new hampshire, came in a close second in iowa he is expected to finish second or third here in south carolina.
7:15 am
if he does, how can you then continue to make the claim that he's not electable >> because i talk to all the people who are in those states that we have to win. find me someone running for the senate in north carolina that wants to campaign for him. >> i know joe. we know joe. most importantly, joe knows us. >> reporter: south carolina king maker congressman jim clyburn throwing his weight behind biden days before the state's primary. when it comes to another key endorsement -- i know you don't talk about your private conversations with the president, but why hasn't he at least sent up a smoke signal to let folks now that joe biden is his guy in this fight? >> well, look, number one, i asked him early on not to endorse. >> reporter: do you regret that?
7:16 am
>> no, because i think -- look, from the very beginning, as you know, vice president, he thinks this is his. he thinks he's entitled. he is the guy who thinks this is automatically his. i have to earn this myself. >> reporter: if you are not the nominee, what does that then say about the democratic party >> it says to me that we have moved away from our roots. we've always stood for a multi-ethnic, multi-racial, multi-dimensional party. my basis of support has always been working class folks who are white and black, and the black community, and high school educated people who just deserve a shot. >> reporter: the former vice president determined to win, but not at the cost of changing his beliefs. >> i tell everybody who has ever come to me as a young candidate, know what's worth losing over. what are you willing to lose over. >> reporter: what are you willing to lose over >> i'm willing to lose over
7:17 am
race. i'm willing to lose over health care, the idea that we have to deal with global warming i don't want the job if i have to say i'm changing my position on race, i'm changing my position on guns, i'm changing my position. >> reporter: joe biden here in charleston on a wednesday morning there. he told me he is quite confident he will come out on top here, a win that he believes will launch him all the way to the white house. he recently pledged in the debate that he would nominate a black woman to the supreme court. i asked him if he's considering picking a black woman for vice president. he told me he has not started having those conversations, it would be premature he did say kamala harris would fit the bill when i brought up her name specifically. he insisted he had not had those conversations just yet joe biden telling me after he leaves south carolina on saturday he's going to head to
