two years. this comes after the district agreed to lay off 300 positions including 230 teachers by the end of the school year. silicon valley affordable housing advocates say google's plan for new downtown san jose campus could go even further when it comes to new homes. as it stands, google wants to add up to 6,000 new homes around diridon station but a group called sbat -- svat home tells "the mercury news" its own assessment, some 10,000 more homes, could add on 60 or so acres of land not yet accounted for. city leaders next month plan to look closer at possible options. a new detail about the number of pedestrians killed across the country and it is on the rise. according to the numbers released by the governor's highway safety association, more than 6,000 pedestrians were killed in crashes last year,

headquarters and with the top business headlines. wall street is set to open sharply higher but it is now lower as the markets rye to claw back from last week's losses which were fueled by fears over the coronavirus outbreak. europe and asia are higher today. a note by goldman sachs predicting that the federal reserve will cut interest rates to offset the economic impact of the virus before the next meeting in two weeks. jay powell said the fed is closely monitoring the situation and will act as needed. stocks have the worst for the week with the dow and nasdaq and s&p 500 all in correction territory or down 10%. the dow and s&p seeing the worst weekly decline ever. american airlines is waiving change fees on tickets amid the virus outbreak. american will waive fees up to 14 days before travel for customers who tickets through sunday and march 16th. the ceo of united said its airline will cut additional

cooler. here is a live look in palo alto. not a lot going on but a breeze keeping the temperatures up. throughout today it will start out in the upper 40s and then reach the upper 50s by 10:00 and continuing to warm up from there as we go into the afternoon. the seven-day forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen. as we look at our high temperatures for today reaching 70 in livermore, 72 in oakland. and up to 73 today in santa rosa. but let's talk about these gusts. because this is mostly in the hills and also along the coast. where we see the bright red and magenta color that shows that we're going to go see the highest winds in those areas. even going into this evening. so it shows that wind speeds will be at about 35 to 45 miles per hour. and then as we go into tonight still breezy but it calms down by this time tomorrow morning. we're seeing high pressure moving across the region. still steering the rain well to the north of us but light spotty

showers across southern california. here is a little disturbance here. so when you have high pressure and low pressure close by it creates the pressure gradient to make the air flow fairly quickly. winds calm down as high pressure moves in and tempe down the lin next ten days showing that we will be dry but there will be some changes heading into the middle of march that could bring us some scattered showers. but as of now, it is still looks pretty dry all throughout this week and then our models are showing very light amounts of rain between now and march 12th. maybe a quarter inch of rain. so nothing too impressive here. and mike you're looking for a fuel tanker. >> yeah. along with our friends in coc but they did not find it. we scan from hyde street down to 98th and didn't see it but chp did get the report. i'll track that and let you know if there is an update or probably only affecting the

was so intoxicated. he now faces attempted murder charge police in santa ana down south are trying to learn more about the man who stormed a catholic church before he was shot and killed. this happened yesterday between masses. the man was able to get inside of that church with 15 parishioners. one of whom was able to slip out in order to flag down police. when officers rushed inside of the church, the suspect started shooting. the suspect was shot and he died. no one else in the church was hurt. a san diego ploifolice offi are responding to reports that they used facial recognition software now under fire from civil liberties groups. >> a new buzzfeed ex pose showed facial recognition from facebook for a data base. hackers obtained the client list and the report indicates that the san diego police department

this is going on for about five hours. a former security guard who was recently let go opened fire at the mall. now one person was shot and taken to the hospital. that person is in stable condition. and the suspect reportedly has taken about 30 people hostage. we'll follow this for you through the morning.
