santa rosa and napa. 79 in san jose. up to 81 in ukia. by tomorrow we'll see more clouds moving in but it'll still be warm. the weekend we'll get a cool down with clouds and rain chances in the forecast, especially into early next week. >> oh, yes >> it is true, mr. roker what a great segue we have a very special "today in the wild" this morning, featuring the gentle giant of the sea, the manatee >> this morning, it's one that survived very rough times and is about to go home they call her poinsettia and kerry sanders is with her along the orange river in ft. myers, florida he has his wetsuit on. something good is going to happen >> reporter: good morning, guys. this is going to be a magical moment, poinsettia, all 910 pounds of her, is about to go back in the water. a lot of volunteers to pick her up
8:21 am
first, let's look at her back story here, the trouble she was in, almost dying to look at her today, you'd never know this young manatee, approximately six years old, was gasping for breath and almost drowned last december. she was in the gulf of mexico, when a naturally occurring red tide hit the massive algae bloom turned the water toxic, impacting sea life >> yeah, what the red tide does, it affects their neurological system, where they're in a coma-like state. >> reporter: so, poinsettia couldn't function? >> correct she couldn't breathe on her own. >> reporter: rushed to zoo tampa, to the manatee hospital poinsettia joined 16 other manatees, also in critical care. how does it taste? >> i think pretty good he's sucking it down quickly here >> reporter: as baby manatees grow, they can become huge some adults weigh as much as a car, up to 3,500 pounds. they only eat plants >> yes
8:22 am
they only eat plants strictly herbivores. >> reporter: favorite meal romaine lettuce. the manatees at zoo tampa eat 900 pounds a day >> they are grazers. they eat eight hours a day, so all day long >> reporter: that's a lot of eating >> as you see, it's almost already gone >> reporter: said long ago, when weary sailors first saw manatees, they thought they were beautiful women with tails, creating the myth of mermaids. are they related to anything we would know on land >> the closest living relative is elephants >> reporter: elephants >> they have a lip just like an elephant's trunk and they have other characteristics that are similar to elephants >> reporter: nursing manatees back to health is often touch-and-go dehydration, and a lack of nutrients are a deadly mix >> this is how we give them fluids and medication. >> reporter: this manatee that
8:23 am
could follow poinsettia into the wild, includes pepto-bismol. >> how is her progress >> she's doing well in deeper waters she's on the road to recovery, for sure >> reporter: manatees, sometimes called sea cows, have no natural predators. the number one cause of injury or death, being hit by a boat's propeller. the sure sign a manatee is healthy and ready to go back to the wild, those bubbles. we had a chance to see bubbles coming up. and, wow does that smell. but i'm told, as a vet, that's a good sign? >> yeah. part of what the team reports back is how well the animals are passing gas. and that's a great process that's what manatees do. they sit around, they eat, they pass gas to me, it's good that gut's working >> reporter: poinsettia, a star patient, fully recovered and ready to go back to the wild her future looks good? >> absolutely, yes >> ready five, four, three, two, one.
8:24 am
>> reporter: all right here we are, all 910 pounds, with every volunteer, taking her back into the water. not far from where she was found. >> keep going. >> reporter: she's moving around we're going to keep her in here. the water temperature here is just perfect it's about 78 degrees. manatees like 68 degrees, much colder than that, not so good. and here we go we're going to, now, lower this. and she will swim out -- look at that gone right? >> no. >> reporter: no. here she is. 30 years ago, the fear was that manatees might go extinct. this west indian manatee was down to numbers of about 2,000 today, it's estimated there's about 8,000. it's a really good success story. and there she goes >> wow she didn't stop to say good-bye. >> reporter: into the warm waters as beautiful as they are, and
8:25 am
how much we love them, these animals are not particularly social you know, we see them sometimes all crowded together but they're not like friends hanging out, going off in a herd together they're individuals, going in their way. there she goes >> carson just asked if we will be able to track poinsettia? >> reporter: you know, it's not like you can track them with a satellite. but what the scientists have done -- with a lot of clapping here -- is they put a chip inside if she were to get into trouble again, they would know who she is they have photographs and each one looks individually unique. but they have the chip in there. it's not as if they can track it in a satellite they want her to go out. >> kerry, she's coming back. she's right behind you she likes you, kerry >> well done kerry sanders -- >> ft. myers better than the ocean. >> congratulate the scientists and everybody there who worked so hard. that's cool.
