>> we would hope as we get to warmer weather it would go down. we can't proceed under that assumption. we've got to assume it's going to get worse and worse and worse. >> listen carefully to his numbers. >> the flu has a mortality of 0.1%, this has a mortality of ten times that. we're checking in live with the dow-jones industrial, down 1900 points. what dr. fauci said has people concerned. i heard this yesterday s johns hopkins command center in baltimore where they're watching the virus and preparing for its impact. this virus has a ten times the mortality rate of the seasonal flu. the concern, the virus could claim more lives than seasonal flu. we already lost 20,000 due to seasonal flu. back to you. >> thank you. >> joining us now is vice president mike pence. mr. vice president, good morning to you.
7:07 am
>> good morning, savannah. >> let's start with what dr. fauc said and settle this once and for all. this is much more lethal than the seasonal flu, correct? >> it is, savannah according to all of our health experts on the white house coronavirus task force it does not, as we look at global data, present as much a threat to younger americans, particularly children under the age of 15 but for senior citizens with serious underlying health conditions it represents a threat of very serious consequences it's one of the reasons why the president took the unprecedented step yesterday of suspending all travel from europe, just as he has done so in january with china, and we're going to be screening and asking every american who returns from europe
7:08 am
over the next 30 days to self-quarantine for 14 days. it's a -- we want to focus on those that are most vulnerable but we also want to work on ensuring that the coronavirus is not further brought into our country from europe. and we're obviously continuing to focus in areas of california, washington state and new york where we've seen what the experts call community spread. it's that combination of efforts -- that we're addressing because of those -- because of the threat. >> i'm hoping that we can just get a lot of facts out in the few minutes we have together. >> sure. >> just leveling with people, the president has said, as recently as two days ago, this will go away yesterday dr. anthony fauci said you can expect millions and millions to get it, the worst is yet to come. congress's own doctor said that a third of the american population could get coronavirus. do you agree with that number? what do your experts tell you the number of infected americans is likely to be, i'm looking for a number if you have it. >> well, let me be clear that
7:09 am
from early on the president has declared a public health emergency, suspended all travel from china, we limited -- we limited travel and issued advisories for portions of italy and south korea. >> yes, but on the number -- >> now suspension of travel from europe, precisely for the reason that we know there will be thousands more cases of coronavirus in this country. >> thousands or millions >> well, i'll leave it to the experts to make the estimates of how many people may be infected. and it's important for your viewers to remember, savannah that the vast majority of people that even contract the coronavirus will experience flu-like symptoms and they'll fully recover. but it's because of the vulnerable population, seniors with serious chronic underlying health conditions that we're focusing so much attention on nursing homes, we're communicating so much with health officials and families that have seniors in a
7:10 am
vulnerable condition we're looking at the most vulnerable we're combatting community spread but the action the president took yesterday, again unprecedented action, suspending travel from europe for 30 days, is all because we know there will be more infections. >> yes. >> in the days ahead and we're trying to hold that number down as much as possible. that's the reason the president took the action regarding europe. >> no question we're seeing unprecedented actions on behalf of sports organizations, companies, travel, all across this country. >> right. >> let's talk about testing. there's no catching up to this or even trying to slow it if you don't test south korea, whose onset roughly around the same time as the u.s., testing roughly 15,000 people a day and tested more than 100,000 people overall. every indication is that the u.s. has not tested anywhere near that number of people why not? >> well, from early on in this effort we've been addressing the
7:11 am
testing issue. we made changes through the fda that allowed for state labs and university hospitals and hospitals to engage in testing and i'm pleased to report every state lab in america can do testing now. many university laboratories are doing it washington state, the university of washington is doing extraordinary work but we are literally working hour by hour do expand the -- to expand the testing and we think the key, savannah, is going to be what we call commercial laboratories like labcorp and quest, who are already spinning up production at the president's direction last week on tests that can be available on a broad basis in the days ahead for the american people we're making real progress, but rest assured we're going to continue to drive forward. but anyone that feels that they may have contracted the coronavirus should call their doctor their doctor can contact the
7:12 am
state lab and determine where testing can take place today in all 50 states. >> was there a little bit of a lag time, slowness about testing, in particular the world health organization in february sent out a coronavirus test to 60 countries, but the u.s. was not among them because the u.s. wanted to develop its own test was it a mistake to not just take that w.h.o. test while we waited for our own test so the testing could ramp up earlier? >> well, it's a fair question and dr. fauci and i were talking with congressional leadership in both parties last night and that topic came up. what the doctor said was that's actually not the way we do it in the united states. frankly, we're the world leader in infectious diseases, our cdc and then our fda produce and approve tests through our incredible health care system in this country
7:13 am
so that's more of a reference of that decision according to what dr. fauci said your viewers should know that we are continuing to lean into this effort the president tapped me to lead the white house coronavirus tas homes, b force about two weeks ago. we brought in all of the leadership of, of course, health insurance industries, nursing homes, bankers yesterday but we brought in those commercial labs like quest and labcorp that are already on their websites, already producing more tests for americans. the good news, as the president said last night, is any american who feels that they may have been exposed to the coronavirus or has symptoms can know that because of the president's leadership all of our health insurance companies have waived co-pays on testing. >> on testing. >> have agreed to extend coverage for treatment
7:14 am
and we've made sure that medicaid and medicare recipients in this country have the exact same benefits, financials -- persons in financial situations should not be a barrier to being tested, nor should the risk of losing your job. the president's going to continue to drive for family leave benefits for hourly workers, for small businesses so that anyone who feels they may have been exposed can stay home without fear of losing a paycheck. >> mr. vice president, i know you have another interview i've got to jump i just want to ask you real quickly, unfortunately this has been infected by politics like so many things and some people think this is just hysteria and media hype, i mean the president himself said on monday the fake news media and their partner, the democratic party is doing everything to inflame the coronavirus situation. there are people out there who believe this and they are going about their business like nothing's going on and we have about 10, 15 seconds for you to get your message to them, for people who aren't afraid of coronavirus and think it's just politics and hype.
7:15 am
>> well, obviously there's been some irresponsible rhetoric. but the american people should know that president trump has ne people of this country higher priority than the health and safety and well being of the people of this country you can go to coronavirus.gov right now to find out what every american can do to keep yourself, your family, your workplace and your school safe. >> thank you. >> you can rest assured we're going to focus on communities where we've had community spread and the president's action yesterday suspending travel from europe is one more example of how he's putting the health of america first. >> all right, i know you're taking it seriously, mr. vice president, thank you very much for your time. i'll let you go. >> thank you. >> craig joins the table now as does nbc news medical correspondent dr. john torres, and stephanie ruhle. dr. torres, what did you hear from the president, from the vice president about the way we're handling this situation? >> they're taking it more seriously than we thought they
7:16 am
were taking it initially we've been behind the eight ball in getting prepared and taking action and that's why it's spread throughout the country and now they're taking steps to try and get it contained we've already broken through containment so we're almost in mitigation stage we know it's going to spread but let's make these steps to try and not let it spread too much and bring the curve down. >> a lot of things you read are about testing and lag time, people are going about their business not quarantined while they wait for results of the test do you hear from the vice president encouraging words in terms of now ramping up the testing. >> that's one thing i didn't hear much of, how we're going to ramp up testing. without the tests you can't tell where the clusters are without knowing where the clusters are, you can't keep it contained. that's extremely important that test is one of the linchpins to getting this thing under control. it hasn't quite been there yet. hopefully it expands and gets better >> i read something yesterday
7:17 am
that i found troubling all of those being diagnosed with the coronavirus and the deaths related are those numbers being reporting to the cdc >> we have a fragmented system in the country vaping in the past, those numbers weren't reported directly to the cdc. we need to get a system that does that. there's 50 public health departments, each state has theirs and so that reporting process is difficult at best in this country. >> bring in steph. right after the president spoke the dow numbers just tanked. >> tanked. >> what exactly did he say that caused that? >> the market investors, companies, saw the president not assessing the risk very clearly not saying how we're going to increase testing and what the numbers are this is all about risk management you have to assess how widespread is this and what do we do about it people keep saying this is a financial crisis it's very different from the '08 financial crisis where we really were in economic straits
7:18 am
this is a public health crisis there was a tipping point yesterday, when americans watch, famous people with corona, the nba cancelling the season, the country of italy is shut down. when you see that suddenly we're realizing the best way to contain and mitigate this is basically ndhen when everybody's better come back out. >> to your point, the administration rightly says, i mean, i think, the fundamental -- what you're saying it's not an underlying problem with the economy now we have economic problems because of the public health response that's required here. >> that's exactly it this is a public health crisis that thus far has been addressed with pr, with politics, trying to downplay it for whatever reason and because of that we are now facing an economic crisis when you cancel the nba season, and that's the right thing to do from a health perspective, think about the trickle down effect. we talk about social distancing,

of those countries? as you see governments, the u.s. government now taking extraordinary measures to try and protect public health you have to also look at what are the implications politically of those decisions as they have real impacts on the personal freedoms of americans, as they have impacts on international business. many in the uk are wondering, is this a reward to the uk because it left the eu, because it followed brexit, which is something that president trump has been pushing for? so there is the layer of public health and there is also this political layer that people are starting to now watch as we are in this world of the coronavirus. and by the way we might be in this for a little while. you have to remember that it took china about two months before it got its numbers under control. >> richard, there in germany, chancellor angela merkel said something there yesterday that got a lot of attention, a harsh warning. she said that up to 70% of germans could be affected by coronavirus by the time this is

8:34 am
8:35 am
welcome back on the big screen oscar winner screen oscar winner octavia spencer often takes us back in time and she is doing it again she is starring as a trail blazing health care entrepreneur, her name is madam c.j. walker, in the upcoming netflix series called -- "self made." how former slave overcame adversity to become america's first self-made millionaire. >> if you look respectable, we all look respectable everything we do as negroes reflects back on us.
8:36 am
if i can help one person, i'm lifting us all up. wonderful hair grower gives me the confidence every day to beat the enemy. slay the demons, fight the good fight as a colored woman in america. wonderful hair leads to wonderful opportunity. >> wonderful hair leads to wonderful opportunities. hello, octavia, how are you? >> hello. >> the first thing i thought when i was watching some of this was how on earth has there not been a movie, a show, something about this incredible trail blazing woman? how is that possible >> i know. you know, we went through this with hidden figures, and so i'm so happy that her story is being told and i'm really thrilled to be a part of telling it. she was a standard bearer in our home. >> let's break it down and tell people about madam c.j. walker, orphaned at 7, married at 14, widowed at 20. she was a single mom she was making $1.50 a week
8:37 am
washing clothes. how does someone that has endured all of that turn -- tell us about what you think brought her into this category of millionaire? >> she was fearless, and tenacity to overcome insurmountable odds to become the nation's first self-made female millionaire i mean, especially during that time period. >> yes. >> it's a beacon of hope and it tells us what we can do. >> and the cool thing about her was not only did she realize that there was a need and she filled it, she wasn't content on just being successful on her own and look at me at the top of the mountain, no, she brought women up. >> yes. >> talk about that part of her personality. >> she was about female entrepreneurship, and sister hood and making black women feel beautiful. and that was empowerment. >> yeah. >> giving them the means to be their own bosses i mean, that's what we all aspire to do.
8:38 am
>> what i was reading, she seems like mary kay cosmetics before mary kay she had the model, empowered people and her goal was to helpo >> in one of the episodes she says it seems like men can't hear a good idea unless it comes out of another man's mouth. >> yeah. >> is that still the way it is, do you think >> i think we've come a long way. >> yeah. >> so maybe the characterization might have been updated. we've evolved a little bit but definitely during that time period. >> and when you were negotiating your deal to do self-made, did you get extra help from lebron >> i did. >> how did he help >> it's funny because, you know, you reach an impasse sometimes in negotiations and for me i always try to be gracious and say, you know, this is the point of no return for me, but i thank you for the opportunity and lebron and maverick stepped in with christine and mark holder and they had my back in
8:39 am
negotiations we need that advocacy, i think. >> given the climate of everything that's going on with the coronavirus, i just wondered, like, how are you feeling in this moment what are you doing differently in this moment >> i'm a home body person anyway because i'm usually on a set but i'm very prayerful for the nation you worry about people who are living paycheck to paycheck. >> sure. >> for me, i'm going to stay in. i'm going to self-isolate and watch a little tv. >> yeah, all right, well, octavia, we wish you well. a great thing to watch if you happen to be at home is this netflix series called "self-made," it will make you feel good, streaming on netflix, starts on friday, march 20th thank you, octavia, we appreciate you coming in for us. craig, to you. >> sounds like a great thing to binge watch. just ahead, how to find the best bedding for your mattress thread count, durability, other factors key for a great night's sleep. but first, this is "today" on
8:40 am
nbc.
8:41 am
8:42 am
we are back with our special series, sleep better today in honor of national sleep awareness week and this morning we want to help you feel good in bed, make sure you get the best rest for your money. so we've invited our guy elliott wilder, consumer digital lifestyle editor, shared their picks for the best bedding, always good to have you, always -- >> thanks, craig, good to see you. >> mattresses past few years have gotten deeper, thicker. >> do these new sheets account for that >> many do you'll see things like deep set so they can, in theory work up to 14 inches we looked at half the sheets shrunk to such an extent after a
8:43 am
year's worth of washing they would not fit on your mattress, and some people spend a lot of money on sheets and we'll talk about that but if you keep them longer than a year, as most people do, and you can't put them on the bigger mattress, they're kind of useless. >> durability specifically, what's your pick >> it depends a lot on personal feel and one of the recommendations that we found is that the way the sheet feels in the store is pretty much the way it's going to feel, wash after wash after wash. we looked at 100% cotton sheets. don't get caught up on thread count. >> not as important? >> not really. it doesn't translate into durability you can spend a lot of money on sheets, they might not last as long generally speaking we found that cheaper sheets shrunk more than expensive sheets but, again, it really varies here. >> those terms sateen. >> percale sheets feel crisper a sateen might be a little shinier or softer. we'll talk about specific brands here and recommendations.
8:44 am
>> let's look at a couple picks, $100 or less. >> these are more. >> these are more expensive. we're looking at this as an investment over time this is $240 shrink as much. so you can use it year after year and one it sounds like a lot but in our test it didn't shrink as much. so you can use it year after year and one from brooklyn, about $100, $140. >> still cotton. >> yes, all cotton. >> and consumer reports best buy, l.l. bean for $149, all prices are for queen sets. >> how long should a set of sheets last? >> personal preference, but think at least two to three years. it's an investment if you can sort of amortize $150 over three to five years it's an investment that we think will help you out. >> talk pillows. >> hugely important. >> start with this one i saw this, and this is funky
8:45 am
for folks who are watching at home what is this stuff inside? >> it's why didn't i think of this idea, it's from coop home goods and the idea is you can make it as firm or as soft as you want it. it comes with an extra bag of filling here and this type of filling, shredded polyester we've found it's the best for keeping its shape and allows it to breathe you don't want a solid memory foam pillow, it's going to trap the heat, you and your wife have heat issues. >> that was very diplomatic, heat issues. >> among other things, maybe but don't necessarily fall for cooling gel pillows. they'll trap heat overnight. >> does it mh sleeper? >> it does
8:46 am
one other thing you want to keep in mind is think of your mattress because what you want the pillow to do is keep your neck and spine neutral so if you have a firm mattress there could be a larger gap between the neck and the mattress, a softer mattress you can sink in, think about all of that when it comes to what your pillow looks like. generally speaking probably not going to want a hugely fluffy pillow, thinner and flatter going to work best for a lot of people. >> what are your picks here? >> this is the coop home goods, the filling you can take in or take out. >> how much? >> $60 and we have one from a company called beckham that's $35, that's also a polyfoam, which is nice and the my pillow premium, a lot of people see those advertised, that's $70 and has that shredded polyfill. >> $70. >> it takes time to figure out how it feels on your neck and body maybe more than you want to spend but you think of it as something that will last two to three years, good buy for a good night's sleep. >> i just learned more in the last few minutes than my whole life thank you. for more on these sheets and pillows head to today.com/shop
8:47 am
oh, savannah >> hello, who am i with? padma lakshmi from "top chef," making a beautiful vegetable soup, perfect for dinner and you said it's easy. >> it's very easy. >> really? >> is it savannah easy >> this is easy, yeah. >> i'm excited and you can store it in your freezer, a great idea right now. we've got that coming up but first, this is "today" on awesome internet. it's more than just fast. it keeps all your devices running smoothly. with built-in security that protects your kids... ...no matter what they're up to. it protects your info... ...and gives you 24/7 peace of mind... ...that if it's connected, it's protected. even that that pet-camera thingy. [ whines ] can your internet do that? xfinity xfi can because it's... ...simple, easy, awesome. [ barking ]

by dove body wash. and this morning on today food we're joined by our good friend padma lakshmi, host of bravo's emmy winning series, "top chef. features a lineup of past all-stars competing for the title and the show's largest cash prize ever.
8:50 am
padma, good morning. i'm a huge "top chef" fan, ironic since uh can't even boil water. >> well, i think you can boil water. i think this is all a facade. >> call my mom and ask her, then i know tell me about this season. >> it's all-stars, really exciting, you're going to know all of the contestants we have ten finalists and five front runners. they're all at least have made it to, you know, sort of the last part -- >> where did you do it >> los angeles. >> we have a lot going on. we shoot at griffith observatory, the disney concert hall we're at the coliseum with olympians, we have kellycert hall. we're at the coliseum with clarkson. >> chock full. >> i hear this recipe is inspired by somebody on the show. >> well, i made it i made this recipe. >> by you, by the host of the show. >> well, we were doing the finale in italy and we all cooked some food and i wanted to
8:51 am
make this classic tuscan dish, which is called something that means reboiled people are intimidated by fennell. cut the stems off, but save them for stock and take out the outer leaves. >> okay. >> you see that little root there. you just want to pull that out. >> pull that little inner thing. >> yeah, like that, see? and then you just cut it like that and people are intimidated. >> are you going to dice it. >> i'm intimidated by fennel. >> no, listen, cut this. just try it. >> no, like cut it out, cut the crap. >> while you do that, i'm going to start frying. so i'm adding two onions, two medium onions. and i'm adding half of the rest of the vegetables, which is carrots, celery and fennel you did a great job. >> thank you. >> it doesn't matter how you cut these.
8:52 am
it's a very forgiving recipe, it's all going to cook down, bay leaves, dried thyme and garlic that's it. >> did you put oil in the pan? >> i did, i put half a cup of olive oil. that's our only fat in this recipe you let that cook down add a pinch of salt to start so it makes the vegetables sweat. cover it, let it go for ten minutes. turning that down because we have one here. so this has been cooking for ten minutes. see how the vegetables have lost color and they're a little softer and the reason i'm adding vegetables in two batches is because i want my vegetables to have some bite to them. >> a little crunch. >> yeah, and retain some of their vitamins as well. >> this is chicken stock. >> this is chicken stock but this recipe can be totally vegan, all you have to do is use vegetarian stock
8:53 am
i'm using about two tablespoons dissolve. let this cook f or a quarter cup, i guess, yeah, of tomato paste. you just put the to nato paste in the broth so it's easier to dissolve let this cook for another five to seven minutes, okay. >> i've got tasters over there. >> fantastic, great. >> hi, guys, how is it >> we're almost done. >> i love this recipe. i'm adding about a tea spoon of salt i like to salt a little bit at a time and then taste. >> the white beans make it, too, by the way. >> the white beans are so great. i mean, they are a ton of protein. >> we're not to the beans yet. he's rushing us to the beans. >> i know. i love this recipe i spent most of my 20s living in italy and this is a great recipe for you, savannah, you really can't mess this up the only way you can mess this up is if you had too much salt or you burn the vegetables. >> oh, my gosh, speaking of. >> turn it down. oh, i had one job. >> pretend this has been cooking for five to seven minutes and you're adding the rest of the vegetables
8:54 am
this is to preserve some of -- >> fire! no. >> all right, now you're going to add greens. this recipe has a lot of greens, this is swiss chard and it intimidates a lot of people, but it shouldn't cut off the stems, and put them all -- roll it really tight. >> okay. >> like a burrito. >> that's a pro tip. rips and all >> i like the ribs with the texture. the smaller you do the ribbons the longer it will take to cook. >> and then dump them in minute left. now i'm rushing you. >> you can rush me you basically just put in all the greens, let that cook. >> do you guys feel super healthy? this is incredible i feel like you're going to add one year to your life just by eating it. >> this is a great recipe to
8:55 am
freeze right now we are talking about food shortages, i would go out this saturday and buy as many fruits and vegetables as you can, cook with your whole family, make a dish like this, freeze it in portions that, you know, if you have a family of four, do four portions so you're not having this big block of ice to defrost there's another recipe on the "today" website which i did last time which is for pork chili verde. substitute the meat for white beans if you're vegetarian let this cook down. >> cover it? >> you cover it, let it cook down and then all you do is add your parsley. >> it's beautiful. >> it's gorgeous. >> drizzle with olive oil. another thing you should do, if you want to prepare to be home and not be able to buy things is not only freeze stuff, but just buy frozen vegetables. frozen is better than canned they usually flash freeze vegetables so they retain most of their vitamins. some of the vegetables we have in our crisper have been sitting there for a week. >> that's good, a lot of people
8:56 am
are buying canned stuff, but frozen, no reason not to do that padma, thank you one week from today, march 19th on our sister network, bravo. coming up, hoda and jenna and the he said/she said fashions but first the third hour. >> after your local news a very good morning to you. 8:56. i'm laura garcia. let's look at sfo this morning where aftershocks are being felt from president trump's white house address last night. he banned most all travel from europe for the next 30 days. the ban takes effect at midnight
