last night "early today" begins now >> we appreciate your being with us this morning. i'm frances rivera. >> and i'm lindsey reiser. a global pandemic grips america as the number reaches 3,000 in the states and officials take unprecedented steps to slow down the spread here's what we know this hour. in california, a lockdown like no other, calling for all seniors to stay home it's the only state so far to put a restriction on residents age 65 or older. governor newsom is urging hospitals and nursing homes to restrict visitors. tom hanks shares an update from isolation, thanking all the people helping him battle the virus. after he and his wife, rita wilson, tested positive, they have been in isolation at gold coast university hospital in queensland, australia. a volunteer organization stemming back to the kennedy administration suspending operations the peace corps is telling volunteers it's suspending operations

the organization is now trying to evacuate their volunteers from several posts around the world. meanwhile, doctors in wuhan have found no evidence that mothers with covid-19 can transmit the virus to their children during pregnancy. this is the second study out of china to confirm this. so far, four mothers in the study gave birth while infected, but their babies were born healthy. as the frenzy for testing kits grows, customs officers seized six bags full of counterfeit coronavirus testing kits the kits were seized at l.a.x. airport. the shipment came from the uk. meanwhile, in sin city, all bets are off, this after mgm and wynn las vegas closed their doors due to the pandemic. operations will be suspended until further notice the venetian and palazzo are expected to remain open. and naomi campbell is fierce on the catwalk and in the face of coronavirus the supermodel showed off her hazmat suit as she was heading on a flight to l.a.x

challenge for medical workers. hospitals in the u.s. are saying they are not ready with not enough equipment or personnel. one governor is asking for the military to step in. we're joined by nbc's erin mclaughlin what wiare you hearing from doctors? >> reporter: i've been speaking to doctors on the front lines fighting covid in seattle that they're short on supplies. they're worried they're going to get sick also heard from the governor of new york say they need more hospitals, more ventilators, more beds. he's even calling for the military to get involved in seattle, a health care system under strain. >> it's a new world for everybody, including people who work on the front lines. >> it is going to be a wave, and

it is going to be a wave that at any of these projections will overwhelm the health care system. >> reporter: worry there's not enough staff, ventilators, supplies, and beds for the sick. now, growing calls for the military to help. >> you're going to need more hospital capacity. you're going to need more facilities let's use that massive logistical machine of the military to actually save lives. >> reporter: a stark contrast to china, where entire hospitals to treat covid-19 were built in less than two weeks. here in the u.s., doctors and nurses contracting covid-19. in washington and new jersey, two er doctors in critical condition. >> i am concerned about getting sick. >> reporter: you can't work if you have covid-19. >> correct and you can't work, even if you have symptoms that might be mild covid-19 >> reporter: then there is the so-called worried well, people with minimal to no symptoms concerned they have covid-19,

flooding the system. >> i think if you're worried, you should monitor your symptoms, try and make a phone call to your doctor's office you actually run the risk of doing more harm by showing up to the er if you're overall pretty well. >> reporter: hospitals are at the front lines of covid-19, a virus that causes as much fear as it does sickness. and doctors i've been speaking to in seattle say they're very concerned about the possible amount of undiagnosed covid-19 cases out there in the community. they say they need more testing. and to that effect, the president's task force over the weekend announced that 1.9 million tests will be made available this week. 2,000 labs are coming online and doctors i've been speaking to say this needs to happen, and it needs to happen quickly frances? >> erin, thank you we have to deal with weather throughout this. we'll have big storms and, also, an incredible amount of snow
