london good morning >> reporter: grizzly figures globally coronavirus virus deaths have now surpassed 100,000 and italy has the highest mortality rate 427 of the deaths just in the last 24 hours. compared to china which has 3,249 deaths and just to put that into some perspective of how bad the situation is in italy, their population is 20 times smaller than that of china's with around 6 omillion people in italy compared to about 1.2 billion in china new infections also shot up by 5 and a half thousand bringing the country's total to just over 41,000 that's more than half of the world's cases in italy alone and the country is struggling to cope inside the hardest hit hospital

welcome back let's update you on the numbers from yesterday of course with the exponential curve the numbers are really skyrocketing now we had almost 5,000 new cases yesterday. a lot of those were coming out of the new york city area. we saw a jump of about 2,000 all by itself. the red region is the northeast which dominates the number of cases that came in the midwest so how are we doing on the curve? the administration says it's going to be very alarming because of the number of new testing and the number of new cases will have a dramatic upswing. it could be a little exaggerated because of the backlog so instead look at unfortunately the fatality curve this has nothing to do with the testing. this is the number of people that we've seen that have died from the virus we had 11 people on march 4th. yesterday we went up to 204. that's that's a growth of about 23% that is alarming
