the pandemic. if the plan is approved many would receive direct payments and it would provide billions and relief for small businesses. it was approved earlier this week and house lawmakers have scrambled back to capitol hill with the possibility of required in-person vote. house speaker nancy pelosi is confident it will pass. president trump is praising the bipartisanship. >> i'm profoundly grateful both parties came together to provide relief for american workers and families in this hour of need. >> we expect to have a voice vote on it, but if we don't we'll be prepared for whatever it is. >> the plan includes money for people who filed for unemployment, a record 3.2 million people filed jobless claims last week. we have team coverage on the house debate in washington and how it could impact people here

in the bay area. we begin with a live talk with eleni kounalakis. >> good morning. it's great to be here. >> it's great to hear you this morning and have you with us here. let's get right to it. we're seeing these numbers and cases rise, more than 1,300 in the bay area. santa clara county more than 500 and we're hearing the numbers could rise even more. are we as a state ready to handle this rise in the number of cases of coronavirus? >> i want to encourage everyone to go to the governor's social media platform. he's been doing a series of press conferences. he's our former marp of san francisco. people know him well and he's breaking down the numbers and exactly what we're doing in terms of meeting this health crisis so he has laid out a plan to get to 50,000 beds along with

personal protective equipment, everything they're going to need to be able to make sure people have what they need. the numbers are growing. we expect the peak won't hit for another two weeks and we're going everything we can from a health perspective to meet the moment and make sure we have the supplies and the beds and the response necessary to help people as much as possible. >> what about paying for that? a lot of people are worried. has the state come up with a way for people who can't afford to have the test or deal with care when they become sick? >> i think people know we've had this surplus in california, this budget surplus so the governor and the legislature allocated about $1.1 billion to procure

we have three more including one down, the seton hospital, being used for the purpose. those resources have been deployed. you're covering the fact that in washington the $2 trillion aid package is about to be voted on that will help as well. also the federal government has given us a hospital ship in los angeles. they are deploying eight units of military hospital capability that will provide another 2,000 beds. we're working closely with hospitals to make sure that they can do it and we have potential there. this is all copping together. it's a very difficult time but the response is very coordinated. we think we have the resources to get there and doing everything we can to meet the

moment. >> you brought up the stimulus package. so many americans as well as californians now without a job. as hard as it is to make it now we have to deal with this situation. what is the state doing to really help those who are now without a job and don't know when they can return? >> earlier this morning you were talking about the fact that if you have a mortgage, a home mortgage from one of the five big banks in the united states, for california governor newsom negotiated a 30 day, if you have a bank of america mortgage, or up to 90 days if you have a mortgage from one of the other big banks, wells fargo or chase or u.s. bank, they're giving these pretty substantial delays in the requirements for your payments and you won't get fees. this kind of action we believe is going to help a lot.

there is a website that provides other resources, how to sign up for unemployment benefits. covid19.ca.gov. let's be real. when we're hearing a traffic report on a friday morning and there's no traffic, we know everyone feels it. our companies, our friends, their companies. and how we're all really faced with this very difficult time in terms of how we're going to get through it economically. the social distancing measures are proven to work. we are all pitching in to do our part. as strange as this new normal is, someone quipped that pitching in and helping to protect your community by sitting on your couch and watching netflix feels very counter intuitive.
