and as we look at record warmth for march, 62 cities had their top five warmest marches on record all along the gulf. these cities recorded their warmest march ever the april outlook, temperatures above average for the western two-thirds, eastern two-thirds of the country into the good morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. we have beautiful weather in our forecast today and the next several days as we see our temperatures will reach into the upper 60s and lower 70s. this weekend the rain returns and we'll see a cooldown as well with some upper 50s in the forecast. we're going to see some low 60s and sunshine in the forecast. once that rain moves in we'll drop back to the mid-50s. t'your weather.

right now we are getting a look at what's happening across the county. it's being converted in san mateo county, being converted into a field hospital, 250 beds. the center will hold coronavirus patients who no longer need intensive care. it comes as health leaders say the county is maxing out on its icu beds in hospitals. more right now from our home page. and stocks this morning are once again free falling down. the dow right now is more than 2% down. this is after dropping more than 800 points at the opening bell. that sell-off comes after the white house warned of a painful two weeks ahead in the coronavirus pandemic. right now we want to get a look at the forecast for you. meteorologist kari hall is reporting from home this morning.

welcome back. in in his latest coronavirus briefing the president suggested americans could wear scarves over their faces if they wanted to protect themselves. >> once again, it raises a debate around whether or not we should be wearing masks. the u.s. surgeon general will join us in a moment. first nbc senior coordinator kate snow taking a closer look at that this morning hey, kate. >> reporter: hey, hoda and savannah right now the white house isn't saying we must wearing face coverings when we go outside, an increasing number, including the president himself, are now encouraging americans to use a face mask or scarf when they go outside. >> my feeling is if people want to do it, there certainly is no harm to it. >> president trump weighing in on whether americans should cover their faces when they go outlet.

virus. we're learning more and more about the virus. we now know there's significant amount of asymptomatic spread. cdc looked into whether or not we should change recommendations to prevent people from spreading novel coronavirus. >> and >> here is the point, if you're going to wear a face covering, try not to touch your face be very careful making sure you don't touch your face. number two, if you're going to wear a face covering, save n95 masks for health care workers who need them. wearing face covering doesn't mean you don't need to practice social distancing. the most important thing, stay at home. we don't want people to think, okay, i'm covering my face so it's okay to go out in public. >> on that topic, the white house had a sobering briefing. put a chart up, if we do social distancing correctly, everyone does it correctly, we're looking at 100,000 to 240,000 deaths in

this country are you concerned that as we sit here this morning 17 states still don't have stay-at-home orders >> well, yesterday was somber news but there was also good news buried in there the somber news is that coronavirus spread all across our country all 50 states, no one has been spared. the good news is that states like washington, like california, countries like italy, when they leaned into aggressive mitigation, they are being able to flatten their curve. we know that if you do this, that it usually takes about three to four weeks from the time you lean into it before you level it off. >> i guess that really underscores the question i'm trying to ask here you're saying the states that did it, have stay-at-home orders are already seeing the benefit of it. we have 17 states that haven't shouldn't every state in this country have a stay-at-home order is the question? >> that's the whole point of these 30 days to slow the guidelines we put out. we want nationally people to understand the importance of social distancing. we live in a nation that has a

system of federalism the governors get to make the decision but we're going to give them the best possible guidance we can and that's to stay at home and social distance. >> sorry for interruption. unfortunately these are urgent times. let me play something from florida's governor he said he has not received a recommendation for statewide stay-at-home order from the federal government and he's waiting for that let's listen. >> the task force has not recommended that to me if they do, obviously that would be something that would carry a lot of weight with me. >> so he's saying he's waiting for somebody at the white house to tell him to shut it down in florida. what would your advice to him be >> my advice to america would be that these guidelines are a national stay-at-home order. there are guidelines that say, look, the more we social distance, the more we stay at home, the less spread of disease there will be. >> any good reason for a governor not to have a stay-at-home order right now >> governors have tough choices
