morning's forecast. hey, girl. >> hey, good morning. it's saturday. some areas are seeing clear skies, while other areas will begin to see rain earlier. you can see the combo of sort of the hues of colors and also the cloud cover. but let me show you what is on track for today. so we have the satellite radar. the majority of that rain still sticking out to the north. the sierra snow forecast is also expected to be pretty heavy. there is a winter storm warning in effect. i'll go through that in a second. let's talk about the timing of good saturday morning. this rain. it will hit the north bay first it is 7:00 on the dot onwe're t and then if you notice, as i zoom in a little bit closer to outsid right now over cck in wi that radar, you can see san francisco and half-moon bay starting to get that rain. it isn't expected to see major rain fall for the entire bay area, but by tomorrow a stronger storm that will drop down.

the cdc also says wash it on. don't touch your face while it's on. leave n95 masks for first responders. and most importantly, wearing a face covering is not a s substitute for social distancing or staying at home. this was another long week and unfortunately things continue to get worse with this pandemic, including a grim revelation in the state of new york where in the past day 562 people have died there. that's more deaths than the entire month of march. health care workers are now calling emergency rooms battle zones. >> we are afraid for our patients. we are afraid for our families. we are afraid for our lives. new york governor andrew cuomo has signed an executive order allowing the state and national guard to take ventilators from hospitals that have too much and redistribute them t hard hit santa clara county, an eerie

addition to a hospital that's bracing for a surge in patients. that you see there is a large refrigerator now sitting next to regional medical center on san jose's north jackson avenue. a source at the hospital system tells us the icebox is there as a precaution in case our local death toll rises to the level of new york. you may remember, new york had to move bodies into refrigerated trucks. new developments for the bay area's extended shelter at home. all nine counties have now extended orders to stay at home unless you are part of an essential business or service. the last three counties to join this order were sonoma, napa and solano counties. the order runs until may 3rd. santa clara county added 75 new cases yesterday for a total of 1,094. san francisco is up 47 cases to

497. statewide we're at more than 12,000 confirmed coronavirus cases nationwide. 239,000. we do want to note, though, that more than 12,000 people have recovered. 7,000 have died. an isolation and quantity order is now in county where anyone who came into contact with the virus needs to self-isolate. this order follows a massive outbreak at a nursing facility where 27 people have tested positive for the deadly virus. two of them are in the hospital. today sheryl hurts reports. >> reporter: stof members are tending to residents while those infected with the virus is sheltering in place. contra costa health officials say the nearly two dozen people

that tested positive for the virus here and who are in stable condition aren't leaving the care center. >> our goal here is just really isolate in place. that's very consistent with our state health directives. >> reporter: 2 of the 27 people who came down with the virus here are being treated at local hospitals. >> this does not come as a surprise. this is something we have been worried about and preparing for for quite some time. >> reporter: as the county continues to prepare, it is also busy dealing with the rising number of people who are getting infected. as of friday, 307 contra costa residents have tested positive for covid-19 and 5 people have diedverom ruvirus. they now require tividuals with symptoms must isolate for seven days. those with symptoms have to tack on an extra week for when their symptoms started. >> our primary weapons against

this pandemic virus are isolation and quarantine of known cases and their close contacts. >> reporter: sheryl herd, nbc bay area news. there is a new ad campaign underway urging people to follow social distancing orders. it is an open letter from nearly 30 of the nation's largest public health departments, including santa clara county. the health leaders published the letter in several of the country's top newspaper. it reads in part, we know it is hard. we know that connection to and within our communities are some of the best things about our day-to-day lives. but for now staying physically apart is the absolute best thing we can do for our friends, our family and our neighbors. the difference this will make will save lives. now to china where today they held a three-minute nationwide moment of silence to honor the more than 3,000 people there who have died in the coronavirus outbreak.

doing what they did and us being to parlay off of that, widening the net. >> there are still more than 59,000 californians waiting for their test results. and while most americans are doing their part shelters at home, many others are literally answering the call, and they include members of the national guard. for the past two weeks alone, the 223rd military intelligence unit out of san francisco has packed food boxes at the second harvest food bank in san jose. since the pandemic hit the bay area, they say more people have enlisted in the national guard for various reasons. >> we're able to constantly provide those benefits that a lot of people are losing out right now, right? low cost health insurance, which is extremely important right now, stable pay. >> they're trying to find out, how can they serve in the california national guard because they live here.

sierra forecast right now lookin radar now will begin to trek south. areas in san francisco will start to get some scattered showers as well as pleasanpleas. let's talk about your microclimate high for today. as the system rolls in, temperatures are going to drop. we will go from 60s earlier this week into some 50s. 56 degrees for san jose, 55 in oakland. we will keep that rain chance scattered through the evening hours. hour by hour outlook. right around 11:30, look at the timing. santa rosa, we are talking about some pretty heavy pockets of rain. so as i push us a little bit forward, you can see sacramento is also expecting some rain, and they will continue to get scatteredn some

of that rain. and then notice the pink and blue hues in the corner where the sierra forecast is. that is sierra knsnow. dangerous travel. check those travel conditions first before you head out the door. you do not want to get stuck in that. a winter storm warning is in effect. taking this time line all the way through sunday, another system that drops down early sunday morning. check out how the colors have gone to scattered to yellow and orange pockets and then 8:00. tomorrow's storm more intense, a chance of thunderstorms and hail. because it is a cold storm, that will bring the chance of low elevation snow into sunday. anywhere from a quarter to a half an inch, taking this time line all the way through 10:00, 11:00 a.m. you can see over an inch and a half. that's three day rain totals for

our investigative report has learned there is also a shortage of a little known but critical type of drug needed to help the most severely ill patients. and san francisco general is one of the hospitals running out. >> reporter: cisatrurium and rocuronium, they are a key tool to help their most critically ill patients. >> it is another shortage of condition. >> reporter: paralytic drugs restrict muscle movement to help those with acute respiratory disstress syndrome or ards efficiently use oxygen on ventilators. one nurses leader confirmed their supply is dwindling. >> they're not in an emergency at this moment today, but given

the rate of admissions and need for ventilators increasing, they are expecting that they will also have an increased need for these paralytic drugs that go with people being on ventilators. >> all of these medicines, we need more than we ever needed before. >> reporter: aaron fox tracks drug shortages nationwide. she says the supply of the paralytic was running low before the covid outbreak along with basic sedatives. >> just like people are talking about we need more masks. we need more ventilators, you can't make akor the patient unless you have the sedative agents you need. >> reporter: those drugs are essentially because they paralyze the muscles so patients need less oxygen to survive. and ards survideprives them of . >> it makescovid-19 ards.

microclimate weather forecast this morning. >> i decided i'm subbing it what you just said. here it is. your microclimate will be cooler. radar right now. we do have plenty of activity. but mainly over the north bay. so this is where the majority of that storm system is passing through right now. if we take a look at the graphics, you can see on satellite radar, we have heavy pockets of rain coming through. sacramento is expecting some rain out of this. but eventually the rest of the bay area will get to see some rain. here are the main things we are tracking for this weekend. by tomorrow, we could be seeing heavier pockets of rain. so even though that rain returning today, we have an additional system coming into play tomorrow, greater accumulations for the higher elevations in the mountain areas. a chance of thunderstorm and hail.

virus. cruise ship passengers stranded at sea for weeks upon weeks landed at sfo last night. the cdc says they are healthy people from holland america's cruise ship in florida. their voyage took a frightening turn when passengers tested positive for coronavirus. some died aboard the ship. today we were at sfo where she talked to some passengers on their way home. >> waiving and smiling beneath their mask, passengers that were isolated on the cruise ship arrive at sfo. >> we're here. we're safe. but i never had any worry about my life at r:hen passengers started gettingerica, the capta job isolating people. >> we were safer on the cruise ship than we were on land because we only had a few people that tested positive.

your folks right now, but here is how they're doing. 78 degrees in miami. plenty of sunshine over there. in new york, 48 degrees. but at least we're not in the 20s or 30s like seattle. however, we will be in the 50s, and that's all thanks to this system that will drop down. currently looking at satellite radar, you can see that system off to our north. all right starting to see some sprinkles moving in towards san francisco. as far as areas south of the golden gate bridge, including san jose, we will get to see the rain. don't worry. your microclimate highs fornot . 56 degrees in san jose. we will keep that chance of scattered rain throughout the afternoon. let me time this storm out for you. that way you can walk your dog. by noon, san francisco with a little activity. if i push this forward to 2:30,

widespread rain. i want to point your attention towards the blue and the pink in the corner right near the dates and timer planner. that's the sierra forecast. they're expecting pretty heavy snowfall and gusty winds. our winds will be picking up for tomorrow. if you push this all the way through sunday, you can see some heavier pockets. that storm is going to bring heavier rain fall, higher accumulations and also a colder storm, which means a higher chance for seeing thunderstorms and also the chance for some hail and lower elevation snow. monday at about 7:30, that pink blob in morgan signals a possibility of seeing some lower snow accumulations in mountain tops. elevations around three to four thousand feet. it will probably be light snow flurries. when it comes to the rain though, a quarter to a half of in

welcome back. in san francisco, county supervisors are urging the city to get more homeless into hotel rooms. this after a person staying at the division circle navigation circle tested positive for covid-19. in a news conference, the supervisor said the spread of infection could have been avoided if the city had moved more quickly to get the homeless out of shelters where they sleep in close quarters.

to that end, san francisco began locating homeless out of shelters and into a new makeshift shelter. our investigative team has been looking into the conditions inside san francisco homeless shelters for several weeks. here is what we found. >> reporter: 31-year-old jake is in line to get off the street and into a homeless shelter, but he isn't sure if they will be safe inside. since the coronavirus can easily infect large groups in close quarters. >> the flu has been spread in there. people get sick with that or th >> reporter: so in the past you have seen illnesses spread quickly in there before. >> right. i have been sick in there. it is not hard to catch germs that aren't yours in there. >> reporter: jake is one of more than 3,700 people in san francisco who will send tonight in a homeless shelter. how close are people getting to

one another inside? >> close. i would say if you remember being in your high school gym locker, similar to that. >> reporter: just a couple feet? >> yeah. and when you go to eat, you're pretty -- it is usually at a table. >> reporter: san francisco has been pushing to stay at home and keep at least six feet away from others if you must go out. but that often isn't possible at the city's already packed homeless shelters. those waiting to check in for the day are frequently shoulder to shoulder and inside isn't much different. >> the goal is to thin out our shelter systems so people aren't as close to one another as they are in our shelters. >> reporter: mayor breed is relocating some into new makeshift shelters, including the city's convention center. 394 beds are being set up there. another 460 would be available next week at two other unnamed sites. but that would still leave roughly 5,000 unsheltered

homeless people on san francisco's streets. that's because shelters were already filled well before the pandemic ever hit. >> this is a ticking time dom. >> reporter: matt says most of the city's shelters are in his district, which include soma. >> for people on the streets right now, for people in crowded shelters, these are c be contracted and spread. >> reporter: do you worry it could be home to an outbreak soon? >> it is a very dense environment where people are not spaced from each other, where it could spread very quickly. it is terrifying. it puts everybody in our city at risk because if this virus spreads among people in the streets, among shelters, it will affect all of us. >> reporter: it became a top priority. but the city tells us tearing down tents is no longer the aim. in fact, the city is now encouraging tents as a first line of defense for the

thousands of homeless who can't get into a shelter. we counted 18 tents on just this one block. jeff manages the city's outreach team on housing the homeless and clearing out large tent even campments. >> if somebody sneezes inside their tent, it is better than in the open air. >> reporter: jake says his housing options weren't great before, so he didn't expect them to get better during a pandemic. >> you are limited in terms of your options. i'd rather be in there than on the streets. >> reporter: get more people off the streets, so san francisco leased nearly 500 hotel rooms in the city. as of now, those are only being made available to those who need to self-quarantine but can't because they don't have a home of their own. as the virus continues to spread, that number is only

expected to grow dramatically. with the investigative unit. for a large majority of people right now, there is a lot of stress related to paying bills and rent during this crisis. in half-moon bay, a prominent attorney is waiving two months rent for his 65 tenants. he owns eight buildings on main street which houses everything from insurance companies to retail and restaurants. he wants to soften the economic blow to his tenants by waiving april and may's rent. >> we have to learn to row the boat altogether because if the o not understand the crisis we're these shops go out of business, main street here, main street like every other main street in america, if not california, is going to fold. >> he hopes his actions inspire other landlords to do the same. wow. we have much more ahead on today in the day coming up.

now that we're all urged to cover our faces when leaving our homes, we decided to ask chris to try to at home. take a look. >> my new homemade mask was a t-shirt five minutes ago. it was really easy to make. no sewing required. i want to help you make one, too. first the rules, the california department of public health says use cotton, lilling or linen. avoid synthetic fabrics. a mask can be improvised from household items. we had all of those at home. i chose an old t-shirt. next a visit to a junk drawer for rubber bands and scissors. this is everything you need, so

let's go to work. in the office i cut out a rectangle. 11 by 14. after that a series of folds. then slip the rubber band over the end. fold the sides inward. put the fabric over your mouth and nose, put it over your ears and there you have it. a diy mask in a minute. it is a good idea to wash your masks frequently. and use detergent and hot water. then dry it on the hot cycle. a reminder, this is not a replacement for physical distance. the six foot rule still asupppa. we're taking virus questions every day. click responds from the main menu or call it 888-996-tips. >> very helpful. and we're asking you to send us
