welcome to "today. it's so this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and hi, everybody. good morning welcome to "today. it's so nice to have you with us on a friday morning. wasn't that a beautiful display, hoda the lights of blue honoring those out there working so hard right now on the front lines as this country struggles to get a pandemic under control. >> did the heart good to see those blue images there. hats off to all of those workers. we do, savannah, have a lot to get to we're going to start with mixed news on the coronavirus outbreak while new york is seeing the curve flatten, this morning the state has more confirmed cases 162,000, more than any country in the world nationwide the total quickly approaching a half million with nearly 17,000 deaths there are also more new signs of the economic impact during what

would normally be a busy week. nearly 80% of the nation's hotels are vacant right now, and we have positive news on the health front the health of british prime minister boris johnson, who's now been moved out of icu. we have complete coverage and start with nbc's gabe gutierrez at the national tennis center in queens where a new field hospital is set to open. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. this is normally the site of the u.s. open, but later today it's set to see its first covid-19 patients the indoor training facility here is being converted into a nearly 500-bed hospital, but the hope is all of that space won't be needed. this morning, in hard-hit new york, the curve is flattening. the latest numbers show hospitalizations, icu admissions and intubations slowed dramatically. >> 200 net increase in hospitalizations which you can see is the lowest number we've had since this nightmare started.

>> reporter: but deaths spiked yet again to the highest level of the pandemic. nearly 800 lives lost in just 24 hours. so far more than 7,000 have died in new york state alone. leading to this startling sight at a city cemetery workers in protective hazmat suits burying five times more unclaimed bodies in a new york grave. in new york men are dieing twice as often and women and nationally get the tested less. >> this is to all of our men out there no matter what age group if you have symptoms, you should be tested. >> reporter: still, while the health system is stressed, it's not overcapacity with new temporary hospitals set to open at the national tennis center, the javits convention center converted to house 2,500 patients as fewer than 200 right now are there. mount sinai hospital scrapped plans to stage the sick inside the cathedral of saint john the divine, but mayor bill de blasio expects social distancing

through mid-may. >> you cannot for a moment get ahead of things, sort of counting your chickens before they hatch, or this disease will have a resurgence and we could actually be worse off. >> reporter: still at mount sinai, this doctor sees hope returning. >> we hear good things every day. >> reporter: she got a text from a colleague before she started her night shift. >> texted, the number, and said, this is the number of patients whose lives we have been saving over just the past day together we're going to overcome this >> reporter: a new study by mount sinai found that the virus began circulating here in new york in mid-february and it came largely from europe, not china this facility is now meant to provide relief to nearby elmhurst hospital which has seen some of the worst of the crisis. savannah >> gabe gutierrez leading us off.

thank you. meantime, the toll on the u.s. economy continues to mount. more and more laid off workers are filing unemployment claims 10% of the u.s. labor force in the last three weeks have filed for claims, adding urgency to this debate. when can the economy reopen? when should it nbc's kristen welker has the latest kristen, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. president trump said he wants to reopen the economy with a bang some of his top officials say they want to start that process as early as may, but some health officials are warning that moving too quickly could lead to a renewed outbreak and even more economic pain. this morning the debate when to reopen the economy is intensifying with some administration officials eyeing next month as a possible target date thursday, president trump

predicting a rapid turnaround when the country is back in business >> i think we're going to open up strong. i think we're going to open up very successfully, and i'd like to say even more successfully than before. >> reporter: adding urgency, additional 6.6 million americans filed jobless claims last week bringing total number of americans seeking unemployment benefits to more than 17 million in the past month, but can the country ready to get back to work given the virus is still spreading? >> you need a nationwide testing system for the virus before you reopen. >> no. we have a great testing system right now we have the best testing system in the world. >> reporter: while some top democrats acknowledge testing has improved, they also argue any discussion of reopening the economy is premature without more testing all across the country. >> shelter in place is making a very big difference, but we really don't have an evaluation until we know the extent of the problem. testing, testing, testing. >> reporter: still, plans are underway to lay groundwork with administration officials telling nbc news, the president is poised to announce a second

economic task force that will focus on reopening the country in phases. >> i think as soon as the president feels comfortable with the medical issues, we are making everything necessary that american companies and american workers can be open for business >> reporter: but help cannot come soon enough for americans like kelly thompson. the single mom in texas laid off from her job as a store manager, has been struggling to get unemployment benefits. >> set my alarm, different times. before 8:00 when they open no getting through. >> reporter: congress passed trillions of dollars in stimulus this week lawmakers were trying to pass an additional $250 billion for small businesses those talks hit a snag with sticking points including how much money to spend on hospital, state and local governments. the senate will be back next week with a lot of pressure on both sides of the aisle to get something done hoda

>> kristen, thank you. bring in nbc news senior business correspondent stephanie ruhle. steph, the numbers again, 17 million people who filed for unemployment, and i can't get that image out of my head in san antonio. like 6,000 people lined up to get food at a food bank. i mean, i guess the question is, like, when are people going to get their checks where's the money? >> reporter: so the thing is, hoda, kristen made a great point. the government is making massive efforts, from the treasury department, to the fed, to congress, passing huge stimulus bills, but remember, this is a country of 330 million people. we've got 30 million small businesses and almost 50,000 corporations so to get this money out logistically is proving massively difficult. and it's only adding to people's frustrations listen, you completely understand why the president or secretary mnuchin would want people enthusiastic and excited about saying we're going to get right back out there and get

back to work, but when people are saying, i can't apply for unemployment because the website isn't working or the small business loan kristen referred to, that's caused huge strain this week. so one of the reasons the government is now asking for more money to give to small businesses is because there's such demand. one of the reasons there's a delay in it, the question, how do we get the money to the most needy people hoda, say you run a small day-care center at home. you don't have a sophisticated payroll system but are a small business say i'm a small business running a law firm should you and i both get line at the same time to get that loan chances are if i'm the law firm i'm going to get that application in, because i've got a tax lawyer and an accountant and can make that happen you run that small daycare center you're completely shut down you really need that money right now there hasn't been pry prioritization

they have to address this. >> secretary mnuchin hoped for may to reopen. is the economy one of these things you flip a switch and, boom, everyone's back to work? >> reporter: well, that's the thing. it's not hoda, you cannot look at this like it's a snow day and say, well, roads are clear. let's all head back out there. remember, it wasn't the president or even the federal government that shut things down the first time you and i had this conversation in a whoa moment, business did it. the nba, adam silver that listened to health experts saying i've got to put health first and shut my season down. yes, many people, the president is putting together this economic task force, the question is, who is the public health expert leading or at least part of that task force -- and is the federal government going to provide the money for mass testing to make sure when we head back out there we're going to be safe because you've seen in other

[ bell tolls ] this easter sunday, once unimaginable sight, many churches nationwide sitting empty on the holiest day of the year the worship from home approach extending from washington -- >> we'll be attending church right in the living room at the vice president's residence. >> reporter: to covid-19 hot spots across the countrybe live streaming for safety. including south florida, where more than 100 parishes in the miami area will be live streaming for safety. >> not bring crowds together to put these people, our congregants in danger. >> reporter: but the state's governor refuses to extend florida the state-at-home order to religious services. >> we've said many times the state of florida is not going to, through government coercion, close a church synagogue or place of worship. >> reporter: the debate playing out in several virus-stricken areas. >> we should not be fearful. >> reporter: a philadelphia pastor doubling down on in-person prayer face masks will be provided to all who walk through the church doors on sunday.

[ coughing ] >> reporter: this morning, more questions over what china knew about the coronavirus and when u.s. officials telling nbc news they picked up intelligence in november that indicated there could be a public health issue, possibly an outbreak in wuhan china. with china now claiming few new cases and even fewer deaths -- u.s. intelligence official tells us even now the whie house has been briefed to be skeptical of china's reporting. >> never seem to be, a little bit on the light side. being nice when i say that. >> reporter: chinese doctors like this one who alerted the

this country >> well, i think it's real important that we prioritize the health and safety of the american public right now, and it is also important that we get back to work as we can i think that's going to take a lot of collaboration between private enterprise, small business, large business as well as state and local and obviously the national government. that will need to happen a region at a time a county at a time there are a number of us thinking about now what needs to be in place so other types of businesses beyond ours can start back to work at walmart we never really shut down keeping the grocery supply chain flowing has been our purpose these last few weeks and months. in this country and around the world. so we have learned a bit how to operate and adjust to try and serve customers in this environment and we'll contribute those ideas best we can. >> it's interesting what you just said. the president this week said he really would like to see the economy open back up with a big

bang, and who wouldn't but you were just talking about how the economy might reopen, and what might be necessary for companies other than yours to reopen are you imagining mass testing that kind of thing >> i think there are a number of ingredients that got to be in place. we need good data, improved testing. lots of folks are working on that now important role of ppe comes into play here. at walmart made a number of adjustments, reduced hours, cleaning the stores overnight. we've got masks and gloves for our associates so they can use those. put up plexiglas at our cashier stands and in pharmacy we're taking the temperature of our associates starting today before they start in our stores, clubs and distribution centers i think ingredients like that need to come into play as customers think about social distancing and associates respond to that same issue, we've started to meter the number of customers that can come into a store at any point

in time to help create more social distance. those are examples how each business will need to prepare and respond. >> you've talked about the walmart workers as being heroic and they are on the front lines, at great risk to themselves, i might add. two workers from walmart in the chicago area passed away from the virus. one of the family's filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the company, and the question is whether some of these policies you just outlined came a little too late for example, taking temperatures of employees in the storess that happened six days after one of the chicago employees passed away >> yeah. our heart goes out to those families, and the associates in those stores we think that everything we're doing, take our lead policy, for example, gives people freedom not to come to work. we don't want associates coming to work if not feeling well have a temperature. the things we've done with our

cash bonus, pulling forward quarterly bonuses give freedom from a financial point of view to make that choice. when they get to the stores the steps i described a minute ago intended to keep people as safe as possible as we work through this i agree with you associates getting up every day, choosing to come to work, serve customers are heroic i traveled around the country. i was in north carolina this week i've been in ohio, nebraska, other places recently. our associates have an incredible attitude and commitment to serving others it's one of the reasons why i wanted to come on today. just to thank them, appreciate everybody that's working in retail, and in manufacturing, by the way. those keeping the supply chain going, choosing to get up every day and go to work and contribute is really truly heroic during this period of time and we're grateful to them. >> i think all americans have a new appreciation for the hard work that is being done and how necessary it is and how much we all rely on it walmart is one of those businesses that's actually doing

well in this terrible economy, where the dow is down, walmart stock is up. and the executives will see a benefit from that, frankly they'll reap the rewards of that is it time beyond just temporary bonus or temporary paid leave, extensions that kind of thing, is it time to do more for the walmart employee to have a piece of that financial success? >> yeah. we've been taking a number of steps, as you may remember, we did a special cash bonus at the beginning of this process to put money in their pockets and pulled quarterly bonus making adjustments to paid time off plan got a three tier process there where associates can choose to not come to work and a number of them have. one of the reasons we've been hiring so many people during this period of time. since march 19th, in the united states we've hired over 100,000 people to join walmart and help out. that's real important. a lot of our associates are feeling fatigued from working so hard for so many days and weeks. as we go forward we'll keep

looking for opportunities to support them more, because as i mentioned earlier they really are stepping up. >> let's talk about what people are buying obviously, they've been stockpiling supplies like toilet paper, paper towel, hand sanitizer. a lot of times you go to the stores, it's not on the shelves. when do you feel you'll be able to meet the demand that's out there consistently >> i think it's important that everyone know that our merchandise continues to flow. our replenishment team, suppliers, are working hard to make that happen food is recovering and in good shape. hand sanitizer has been harder to come by our associates have it and we're working to put it on the shelf soon as we do, it's gone paper goods continuing to sell out quickly. sold enough toilet paper for every american to have their own roll just in five days so there's plenty of flow coming, but if everyone could manage and buy week to week rather than stocking up at this point it would be helpful for

everybody. >> there was an announcement a few weeks ago at the white house, as you, walmart and other big box retailers would participate in housing mobile testing sites for the virus in your parking lots. as i understand it, there have been a few set up, but not for everybody. they're for front-line workers it hasn't really gone, or caught on nationwide yet. what's the status of that and what to expect >> yeah. we're making progress. walmart along with other retailers have been working with the testing lab, state governments and the federal government to try and stand these us we've put up a few and think about 20 sites will be open over 10 states in the next couple of weeks. ppe the original limitation. that's starting to improve we're hoping to get those open and operating quickly in the places where needed most the government also asked for more assistance from us and from others for disposable surgical gowns. we've worked to source that and

and we are all living that in a particularly visceral way, as we all suffer together from either the reality or the fear, the well-founded fear of this virus. the message of jesus was captured in the sermon on the mount. it was about doing unto the least of these it was about reaching outside and not being closed in, and the irony of where we are today is that we have to reach out virtually, but we can still do that, and i think find a way to follow the great commandment that came out of last night in the christian tradition, which was which jesus washed the feet of the disciples he said, the commandment i leave with you is love one another as i have loved you. >> hmm indeed in fact, i was thinking just this morning that in a way no matter what your spiritual practices are, we're all

what the psalmist called in the great time of trouble. and today is the day to think about this jesus went to the cross, because it was ordained by mysterious purposes that we, to the redemption of the world, it was going to be about the sacrifice of a son we don't know why that was but we know he did it, and we know that when he cried out, "my god, my god, why haft thou forsaken me" from psalm 22 everybody should go and read that psalm today it starts with pain, with the anguish. that we're in right now. that psalm ends with the poor shall be satisfied and shall eat and ends you with this vision of order. what we have to pray for is that that's how we will come out of this. >> yeah. i always think the psalms are

good morning. 8:26. i'm marcus washington. a look this morning at the number of confirmed coronavirus cases statewide. there are now more than 21,000 and at least 547 people have died. in the bay area, there are 4400 confirmed cases. santsa clara county alone has 1400. and there are now 118 deaths across the bay area. ghost ship warehouse fire department derick almena may be released to home confinement as soon as today. a judge is supposed to rule on whether he should leave santa rita jail. at least 11 deputies have been sickened there. he's still awaiting retrial after jurors could not reach a verdict in his first go around. and the judge -- if they do
