we can't see but how far do they travel let's say you're in a grocery store and you hear somebody cough, is that 6 feet social distancing enough? our eye-opening visit to a lab may provide some useful understanding. scientists at florida atlantic university using a lab to visualize what happens when we cough. >> charging. >> reporter: the engineering professors use a dummy to simulate the cough droplets we all create >> three, two, one. >> reporter: the fau team uses a laser to follow how far those droplets travel. what you're looking at is a mixture of water and glycerin that creates smoke, 10 to 20 microns in size. the smaller droplets of fluid we expel when we cough. the simulation shows the projection 3 feet traveled in less than 2 seconds. within 12 seconds.

know, many states want to reopen, and experts continue to say the key to doing that is going to be testing. however, states continue to struggle with testing across the country. part of the problem, a lack of reagent. those are the chemicals really used to interact with the patients' samples. they are in short supply and often come from china. now, the president says he's going to use the defense production act to increase production of swabs but said testing itself is actually up to the states another bailout now, another plan to provide more money to small businesses is hitting a bit of a snag in congress. this will provide another $500 billion to small businesses after the first $350 billion was already spent. democrats want to see some of that money go to state and local governments that are pleading for help however, it's a sticking point with republicans you know, craig, when you talk through these masks and try to take a breath, suddenly you've got cotton coming into your mouth and it becomes a bit of a challenge. back to you. >> i know the feeling well mr. costello, you pulled it off

disaster loan. this gives you up to $10,000 in advance if your business has temporary revenue losses unfortunately, at this point, that's also out of money, but it's likely to get reloaded. there are other options, though. if you currently have a small business loan, you can get a bridge loan. if you have one, they are offering a deferment so you don't have to pay interest so those options are out there, but they are not what some people call ppp free money though, it ain't free money if you can't get it at all. >> exactly i know there's a federal reserve program. i do want to ask you about an issue people have seen in the news, which is some big change chains getting some of these ppp loans. you heard about shake shack, which actually returned -- to its credit returned the loan but how much of a problem is this is congress going to tighten up the rules so people aren't slipping through the cracks that really don't need to be getting a loan it's mom and pop shops that do >> here is what i can promise you, savannah. every single day people like me

are reaching out to lawmakers to walk through this problem because it's a very big one. it's important to note from congress, the treasury, sba, everybody has the best of intentions. how are we going to get this money to the american people but here is the problem, one of the reasons so many loans went to bigger businesses is because banks have an issue where they have to quote, unquote, know their customer so the customers they knew the most information about, they were able to process loans for more quickly congress is looking at that. because if you're a mom and pop, if you run a daycare center out of your house and maybe you haven't had sophisticated payroll, you weren't able to organize this. but if you were a business that was more established, you had that information now, this is the issue we have to address with congress do people need this? remember, it's the paycheck protection program the idea is, if you're like ashley, we're going to put you in this program and give you the money to ensure you don't lay people off what congress needs to look at

and that's your latest weather. savannah. >> al, thank you now to our ongoing series, facts over fear. this morning we're talking about masks and face coverings there's a lot of confusion about when to wear them, which kind, how to properly wear them and how to clean them as well. nbc consumer correspondent vicky nguyen joins us to clear this up vicky, you've been so smart with all this stuff let's do the top line first. when should we be wearing masks? you and i are inside right now, we're not wearing them when do we need to >> cdc's guidance is clear any time we're in public we should be covering our nose and our mouth. the intention behind this is to protect other people the idea is we could be sick, we could be infected and asymptomatic, not showing any symptoms you wear a mask, you're protecting me. i wear a mask, i'm protecting you.

it's especially important if you're going to be in an area that it's difficult to socially distance, meaning a grocery store or a fopharmacy >> what if you're out running or exercising and you don't feel like you're around people and it's hard to do that with a mask, can you skip it then >> this depends. are you going out in an open space just with people in your household where you can guarantee 100% you're not going to come in contact with anybody else, under those circumstances, sure, you can go without a mask. p but if you're going to a park or a hiking trail or walking along a path where you might run into another person walking their dog or going for a jog, you should have that mask on this is to protect other people and it's very important we all get on board and do this, especially now that it is the recommendation of the government and in a lot of states, they're requiring this any time you're out in public. >> okay. we know that the n95 masks, surgical masks, those are for our first responders you can make your own at home, and i know you know how to do it, right? >> yes hoda and i did this a couple weeks ago, actually, following the guidance of the cdc.

i brought it back in it's basically a piece of rectangular fabric, fold it in thirds, two loops, fold it like this and loop it over your ears. basically a rubber band, high cotton, you want to make sure it's breathable but if you can layer a couple of layers that's going to give you more protection you don't want it to be suffocating. it's a good idea to have multiple masks on hand so you can change them out. >> what about fit? >> this is really important, savannah the masks and we've seen all manner of people out and about wearing masks in this all sorts of ways. we want to make it clear you need it to cover nose and mouth, over your ears. a cloth mask a friend made for me you want it to come beneath your eyes and all the way to cover your chin. you want it to be comfortable so you're not constantly fidgeting with it. when you take it off, let's talk about that you want to remove it from the back to the front. when you get home, the first thing you should do is not take off your mask, you should be

washing your hands first, then remove it from the back to the front, don't touch the mask. put it somewhere sunny because sunlight is a natural disinfectant how often should you wash the mask experts say it depends if you go out and run and it gets sweaty, you should wash the mask soap and water is fine, throw it in the dryer, make sure it doesn't shrink if you're only wearing it for a half an hour, you're going out to the produce stand, picking up some fruits and vegetables and coming back in you can probably go two to three seconds without washing it. >> i have five seconds what do you do if your glasses fog up >> buy a commercial anti-fog spray or try this neat trick wash it soap and water let it air dry. there's supposed to be a small film, that should keep the fog. >> good morning. 8:26. i'm marcus washington. here's the latest bay area coronavirus numbers. nearly 6600 confirmed cases with 211 deaths. santa clara county is close to hitting the 2,000 mark. and leaders in santa clara
