jose. 79 in napa. up to upper 60s. we'll get our micro climate in the week ahead coming up in a few minutes. a fire sweeps through an apartment building in san bruno. residents tell us what happened just before we got out. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda there at the scene. sharon? >> reporter: i just got here about five minutes ago and we're trying to piece together what happened. firefighters are walking back to their fire engines, so it appears they're telling me the fire is out. it's calmer than an hour ago. you see firefighters still on scene. the ladder still reaching all the way to the top of the building there. this is on santana helena in san bruno. you can see some of the residents here, the evacuato

evacuators -- they evacuated earlier today. they have their masks on and are from the apartment complex nearby. they were told to evacuate as well. apparently now it's a lot calmer. put this one out, the residents said it happened in the back of the apartment complex. everyone got out safely. it san bruno, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." police in san francisco are looking for clues in a homicide that happened in the outer sunset. details very limited. investigators are telling us the body was found in an apartment yesterday. officers scoured a building on the great highway between lawson street. we'll keep asking for updates.

house speaker nancy pelosi is the latest big name to endorse former vice president joe biden for his run for the white house. a prerecorded video saying biden's help passing obamacare and the 2009 stimulus proves he 45s t has the leadership skills. and fewer cars on the road are helping caltrans work at the highway 101/280 alemany interchange. crews are putting the finishing touches on the northbound alemany deck. work is expected to wrap up soon. caltrans expects everything to be finished by next sunday. and by now you have heard or even heard of those conference calls going awry, but what happened in vallejo is just downright over the top. now an elected official is apologizing. >> reporter: yeah, and we have video proof of that so it's not something that we are exaggerating at this point and there's no good explanation. i can show you what was happening leading up to it. take a look at it. >> okay, first i'd like to introduce my cat. i would like to introduce my cat. >> that is vallejo planning commissioner chris platzer speaking in a zoom call back on april 20th. as you saw and you heard he picked up his cat and then tossed it off screen. platzer is also seen drinking out of a green bottle that could be a beer. we are trying to confirm reports that he resigned but a city spokesman said they have not had any contact and have not received an official resignation. the city's statement reads in part the city does not condone

the behavior that vallejo planning commissioner chris platzer exhibited during the april 20th planning commission meeting. this type of behavior does not model the core values of the city of vallejo. vallejo's manager put an action item on the agenda tomorrow to have him removed. we will cover that meeting tomorrow. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." thank you for that report. a new look at the new numbers of covid-19 here in the bay area. more than 7,500 people have tested positive for the virus. sonoma county reported two new cases. marin has one more. 260 people have died across the bay area. making it known that ppe and

testing is in shortage. she spoke on "face the nation" over the weekend. >> this would be a federal coordinated effort. we should not be having these conversations which is a big reason why we have to put these shelter in place orders because we don't have the resources that we need to keep people safe especially around testing. at least 2 dozen people have tested positive in a single occupancy hotel in the mission district. it has had 52 total units. 22 residents and two staff members are among those affected and other dozen or so residents who tested negative are now back in other hotels. this morning there are questions about whether employees at tesla's fremont

factory will head back to work. the shelter at home order is in. they are asking dozens of employees to return to work on wednesday internal emails object. they have been working from home since mid-march. the factory is only open because of alameda county's stay-at-home order in effect until at least sunday. 4:38 for you that morning and banks will resume taking applications for small business loans. up next the changes in place to make sure that the money this time goes to those who need it most. plus, did you follow the shelter at home order over the weekend? warm weather brought many californians outside. still ahead, what cell phone data is telling about people's activities.

higher, investors assess the possibility of the global economy reopening after the coronavirus outbreak. the markets are coming off their first weekly decline in the past three and this is a record plunge in oil prices. stocks have been on a roller coaster ride. a sea of earnings. nearly 30% of the s&p 500 and a dozen dow components report results. we'll hear from a cross section of the economy including mcdonald's, caterpillar, 3m, apple, microsoft, amazon, pfizer, ford and tesla. and the u.s. government has told banks it will cap how much each of them can lend under the paycheck protection program which reopens for a second round today. the small business administration will impose a maximum dollar amount at 10% of the program's funding or $60 billion per lender. banks have been bracing for another frantic race. the ppe came under fire after several publicly traded companies with thousands of

employees and millions in annual sales got loans while smaller businesses were left out. and samsung and google are offering free phone repair to help first responders. this is through the end of june. they have teamed up with a company called you break, i fix. more than 500 locations nationwide. it applies for any samsung galaxy and google pixel smart phones and covers repairs such as cracked screens and replacement batteries. kari, back to you. thank you, rahel. let's get a look at our temperature trend for san jose. we're going to start out with some upper 50s but we're going to be above normal again today as we reach into the mid-70s by early in the afternoon. we could see some spots once again hitting the low 80s. more on this in the forecast after the break. your speed is pretty standard. it is trending to slow it down quite a bit. what's going on over in san francisco coming up.

>> those who are up and ready to go this morning, meteorologist kari hall has been working for you overtime getting that forecast for us today and, kari, how can we expect that weather to treat us today? >> it's going to be nice but i slept right here on the couch to make my commute shorter this morning. i'm just kidding. temperatures that are nice and cool and a live look outside at san francisco with an all clear sky. we are going to see our temperatures starting out nice and cool but warming up today. let's go hour by hour. low 50s for many of our micro climates, upper 4 seeing temper east bay at 71 degrees. it's going to be perfect right in time for lunch if you want to head outside and get a break from all the online classroom -- classes, as we head into the afternoon we're starting to warm up. in the north bay we're in the

low 80s and in the inland valleys the low 80s for the day. along the coast cooler with some mid-60s for this afternoon. as we go into tonight right around sunset as you head out for the last walk before we end the day we're going to have some comfortable temperatures and a nice breeze as well. if you want to get afternoon outside in the backyard spending time with family in vallejo temperatures in the mid to upper 70s, maybe you're grilling outside, have dinner outside. it's going to be a nice change. as we look at the forecast we're still in a very dry weather pattern. we are not going to see this changing as we go through the week. in fact, several storms. it will change a bit as we see some cooler air coming in middle of the week. we are starting out warm and temperatures peak tomorrow reaching into the mid-80s inland.

back to the 70s for the rest of the week but still no rain the next several days. mike, you've been tracking the morning commute. how is it looking for early morning drivers? very calm right now, kari. we're following the fire in san bruno near the b.a.r.t. tracks but not affecting the b.a.r.t. tracks. it's not a major issue. of course we're concerned about the people affected. the peninsula and east bay, south bay all moving smoothly. i remind folks the shift southbound 101 traffic is shifted over to southbound 280 as the transition and construction continues. they've fixed the northbound bridge and are getting ready to work on the southbound bridge. bring your speeds down for safety. the rest of the bay shows a near the ve.

carquinez bridge. southbound 101 with the headlights. we do have a good amount of traffic. a steady flow, though. it's quite management. back to you. an update on the virus numbers this morning. there are more than 43,000 reported cases of covid-19 across california and more than 1,700 people have died here in the state. as more states prepare to reopen, many in the bay area and across california are eager to get back to something that resembles life as we once knew it. >> in fact, the new data is showing potential change, people leaving home more often. here is sergio quintana. >> reporter: one of the reasons parks and some beaches have remained open is to allow people to get outside and get some exercise.

this weekend people crowded into those some concern. the famous painted lead is iconic and so are the crowds that often gather here. only two people are wearing masks as they talk at close range to each other. when you look closer at the cluster of people lounging in the distance, none have on face coverings and it's not just alamo square. >> we did the panhandle and it was pretty slammed especially the shaded areas and down by the conserve attorney of flowers. we stayed up here to avoid the crowds. >> reporter: joslin and gauge opted to walk on page street which was closed to vehicle traffic to allow people more outdoor space. cell phone tracking data will show how much people deviated from stay-at-home orders. people started leaving their homes more around april 17th. researchers say the drop could be due to the combination of warming weather and quarantine

fatigue which sets in after several weeks for most. fatigue may be settingronvirus etting up. hard for all ofus, we really are saving our future selves from a more constricting pandemic if we hunker down right now. >> reporter: sergio quintana, "today in the bay." this next story, laura, is something we hope people would do. a southern california community rallying together to pay tribute to a marine killed in iraq. that's right. in fact, thousands yesterday drove past the family's home to pay respects to the family of the gunnery sergeant. the marine was killed in action last month after his wife and brother posted online asking for support, and the city of simi valley showed up in a very big way.

the family plans to have a full memorial service at arlington national cemetery as soon as it is allowed. coming up next on "today in the bay," we're going to take a look at how a delay in the u.s. census could actually mean some delays in future elections. and happening now the only game in town scores big time numbers. the nfl says a record 55 million viewers watched the nfl draft between thursday and saturday. that's a spike of 37% over last year. some think the interest had to do with seeing inside so many coaches' homes because the draft was remote. the league also raised more than $100 million for coronavirus relief efforts.

a judge's decision to ban california's new law requiring background checks for ammunition buyers was short-lived. last thursday he ordered the ban. an appeals court is reinstating it. the delays for the u.s. census count may well spill over to the redistricting that always follows the once a decade event. in some areas that may have a big impact on who controls state or local power or what laws pass or fail. if the census pushes its deadline back which congress must still approve the backups may delay future elections. something good for you that

morning coming out of southern california. and when the pandemic cancels the party for a world war ii veteran turning 105 years old, laura, the party comes to him. >> how is that a party? they led a parade of cars wishing lieutenant colonel sam sax a happy birthday yesterday. it didn't stop there. the lakewood resident received some 7,000 cards from across the nation including the president. he planned to place u.s. flags on his front lawn. i'll let him tell you the rest. >> i asked for 105 flags. presently there are over 400 flags. who could have imagined this was happening to little sam sachs from north dakota. >> sachs was a paraglider during the d-day invasion of normandy.
