here we go, another workweek, thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> mike will get us through with that commute in about eight minutes. al taking a look at the warm weather that was shaking up the week. >> we ended the week with very warm weather. we'll see the same thing again today, in fact, our temperatures peak again tomorrow. as we get started a look at our concord temperature trend in the mid-50s but at noon we're at 77 degrees and that's well above our normal high temperature. as we look at our micro climates expect it to reach into the low 80s inland. we'll talk more about this and what's ahead coming up in the forecast in a few minutes. thank you very much, kari. decision 2020 and no surprise here, house speaker nancy pelosi is the latest big name in washington to endorse former

vice president joe biden in his run for the white house. a prerecorded video was sent out saying biden helped to pass obamacare and the 2009 stimulus proves he has the leadership skills to guide america through the pandemic. this could be the week more americans venture outside, maybe shop or dine out. one-third of all americans are starting to reopen this week. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live in washington. i saw the pictures and video online. a lot of people out. what is the federal government saying about all of this? >> reporter: yeah, well, they're concerned. in some of these areas the numbers have not gone down and that was a prerequisite in the guidelines. some of the states aren't reading the fine print. as more states ease restrictions this week a warning from the federal government about reopening too soon. >> i'm sure a lot of people missed the asterisk that said to

look not only statewide but also county by county. >> reporter: new york's plan, restart construction, then essential businesses after may 15th only where coronavirus cases are dropping. >> if you don't have 14 days of decline, nobody would say be reckless and open anyway. >> reporter: new jersey is not ready. >> we are still a number of weeks away. >> reporter: south carolina just got more than a million masks. maryland and michigan are fielding a flood of calls about president trump's suggestion to inject disinfectants in the body to kill the virus. >> hard to imagine that people thought that was serious. >> reporter: in nevada people are ready to go back to work. >> all of us are scrambling to keep a roof over our heads. >> reporter: 90 million direct payments and paper checks are on the way. >> they've gone out so the checks are in the mail. people should have received them. >> reporter: states trying to

hold on financially as the top republican suggests they declare bankruptcy. >> it's outrageous for senator mcconnell to suggest that. >> reporter: testing remains an issue. americans may need to practice social distancing through the summer. and we just got word there may be no white house briefing today. we didn't see one over the weekend. in fact, we haven't seen at a briefing since that controversial suggestion of injecting disinfectants to kill the virus. we'll see what happens today. there was one scheduled but we got word it may not happen. live from washington, i'm tracie potts, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, tracie. we'll keep following that. british prime minister boris johnson is back at work today. he, himself, was fighting the coronavirus. he sent out this message thanking health care workers.

>> i today left hospital after a week in which the nhs has saved my life, no question. it's hard to find words to express my debt. >> johnson's return comes two weeks after he was discharged from a london hospital. he spent a week including three nights in intensive care where he was given oxygen. his return comes amid growing criticism of the government's handling of the pandemic. more than 20,000 people have now died in the uk. in just a few hours a new testing site opens in the tri-valley. bob redell is live in pleasanton. i know certainly the more testing the closer california gets to reopening its economy, at least that's what we've been told. he has not given a date when it can reopen.

it could help the state reach that goal. you must be a resident and meet one of the following criteria, fever over 100, have a compromised immune system, be over the age of 65, homeless, pregnant or recently pregnant. one of those criteria needs to be fulfilled. you don't need a doctor's note. unlike the testing site in hayward, the video you see now, this site in pleasanton is not free. your insurance will be billed but there will be no out-of-pocket costs. they have enough tests for 150 people a day. you get the results within 72 hours. it's open 9:00 to 5:00 monday through friday, enter through gate 12 at the fairgrounds.

as of last week 60,000 were being tested each day. the governor says we need to be in the neighborhood of 60,000 to 80,000 before we can talk about slowly reopening the state. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the very latest there, bob. the pandemic continues to hit nursing homes very, very hard. last week four people all over the age of 80 reportedly died at the central garden senior hospital in san francisco's person edition. nearly 70 have tested positive. laguna honda is reporting two new cases bringing the total there to 21. around 20% of all california nursing homes have reported coronavirus cases. happening tomorrow san francisco's school board may approve a big change when it comes to spring semester grades. "the examiner" reports they will green light a pass/no pass grading system. it was only applied to the

current semester due to the obvious circumstances. new this morning people living on treasure island now have one less way to find food options during this pandemic. uber eats has halted deliveries after fee charges were capped at 15%. mayor london breed made the move to give local restaurants a better chance to compete with companies like grub hub and uber eats. uber eats says it means it cannot cover the operational costs. critics are calling the move discriminatory because most are low-income minorities. in the south bay working on the frontline. san jose's new almaden club organized law enforcement, firefighters, rangers and other first responders. first responders actually drove a one and a half mile loop as

people lined the streets with signs and banging pots and pans to say thank you. very important to acknowledge them for what they're doing and having to be out there during the difficult times. we just need to give back to them what they're doing up front for us. >> many community members say that they are worried for the first responders and will do what they can to keep them safe. >> old school, banging the pots and pans. >> showing that support any way you can. a lot of people have been doing that as they step outside to yell and clap. it's nice to see all of that support throughout the bay area. >> big time. >> boy, it felt like summer hit on saturday. i want to check the forecast with kari and then it seemed to calm down on sunday. what's in store for this week? >> it's going to be very much like yesterday. still feeling very nice, a breeze picking up and a mostly sunny sky.

i've had to double up on my allergy medication so if you've had to do the same it's because we have a high amount of tree pollen. it is oak, pine and june perfect, still the main allergens and the grass pollen is moderate at this point. just a heads-up as you enjoy this nice weather. our live view in dublin right now, low 50s but it will warm up fast again today. we'll get a look ahead to the rest of the week's forecast in a few minutes. and mike has a look at the commute through the tri-valley or the rest of the bay. very light, smooth traffic -- i shouldn't say light but a smooth traffic flow and no backups. there is a steady flow there and around the bay as we look at our maps. we have green sensors all around. you can see right here from the big view there is slowing that's mandatory south of 101. let me show you the construction site that we have going on

today. we'll reach into the low 80s by this afternoon. more warm weather in the forecast. a nice cooldown. i'll have a look at all of that coming up in the forecast in a few minutes. good morning and a very happy monday to you as well. it looks like tesla is once again taking on alameda county. tesla wants to bring workers back to its plant. alameda county says it can't. it's too dangerous. you may recall tesla kept building cars after the shelter in place orders were given saying it was a critical industry. the county says it's not. now cnbc reports tesla wants to bring some of the workers back to build cars. the county's sheriff's department spokesman says this is not optional. local health orders limit tesla to a minimum basic operation until may 3rd. that would put just enough to

build cars and to be safe. we talked to the sheriff about how he would enforce this later this morning. "the business times" says zenefits has cut staff. it makes software for human resources. the ceo said in an internal email he had to make the gut wrenching decision to let go some talented members of his team. facebook friday announcing what looks like a zoom knockoff. a way to communicate with your business colleagues or have drinks with your friends called messenger room. you don't have to have a facebook account to join. zoom has a time limit on its free version. marcus and laura, the beer industry has a problem, too much beer. they're making beer for kegs, sporting events, spring baseball, concerts. there is no spring baseball, no concerts, that sort of thing. there are too many kegs. they're trying to figure out what to do with millions of gallons of beer. one company distilling the beer down to pure alcohol to make

hand sanitizer. it sounds like millions of gallons of beer will have to be dumped. i saw a thing on youtube a jogger who had a video camera and was looking at people's recycle bin. i don't think there's a lack of beer or wine or spirits in the neighborhood. i think that's going just fine based on his recycle research. >> that's funny. i was talking to someone at safeway. i go out once a week. everyone is buying wine and ice cream. everyone. >> ice cream? and wine? >> those two things. some comforts, i guess. >> thanks, scott. 5:17 this morning. good news for amazon workers. amazon extending its wage increase for warehouse workers for another month. amazon announced last month it would raise pay by $2 per hour here in the u.s. the new policy was initially going to expire at the end of april. now amazon is extending it through may 16th.

a developed a new state-of-the-art self-cleaning technology. at first glance it looks like a metal detector you might see in an airport or a courthouse that you have to walk through. it uses a form of uv light called far uvc that kills any bacteria or germs a person may be exposed to including coronavirus. the owner developed that technology to make his employees feel a little more comfortable when they return to work. >> for us it was totally worth it to guarantee the safest environment for our team. >> the fda or epa have not yet improved that invention. all right, so many parents, i can tell you firsthand, you included, about those bedly nighttime negotiations for tucking in the kids. >> that's right. there can be plenty of them. one little girl had a big advantage with her dad.

>> because she doesn't realize it. >> possibly. we do have clear skies today, kari, maybe? >> yeah, and i've been telling my kids the weather every night before bed. i don't know, maybe that works. it's just what you do. we will have more beautiful weather today as we get a look at our high temperatures for this afternoon. if you're thinking about enjoying more time walking around the enabled but, of course, social distancing still in place, we're going to see those temperatures today in concord and antioch reach 83 degrees. so still very warm and then along the coastline we're in the mid to upper 60s in san francisco and half moon bay. i know you've been calling your friends and family a lot and seeing how the weather is across the country as they are also having to shelter in place. we have some 90s across parts of the south.

boston, it's been very chilly and temperatures in the upper 30s as they get snow across the northeast and severe weather. as we get a closer look at the northeast if you have family in maine, new hampshire, some of those areas up there they are dealing with some snow right now especially for those upper elevations in the hills. we are looking at some dry weather here as we bring you back home. this is the kind of weather we're going to see all week. no changes ahead as the area of high pressure builds and keeps it dry. we will see the storm systems at least pushing down cooler air but not expecting any rain the next few days and our temperatures will be warm for today and tomorrow. there will be a slight cooldown for the rest of the week. we'll bring it back to the 70s which is closer to normal by the end of the week. as we head over to you, mike, how is it looking for the morning commute? >> probably close to 70 but

let's say 65 and give people the benefit of the doubt. 35 is the number you should come down to as you head southbound to the 280 interchange. there's a shift to 280 continuing progress there. as we get to the rest of the bay, there are reports of a little tree fire. i don't think that's related to the construction going on. we'll follow that. no other problems aside from that construction, no adjustment to speeds. back to you. one of the hardest hit countries in the pandemic, spain, is easing restrictions. who is allowed to head outside for one hour a day. it's all coming up next. and in case you missed it on "snl" the perfect remedy as brad pitt takes on dr. fauci. the highlights for you coming up. you're watching "today in the bay."

welcome back. 5:25 this morning. protesters demand california reopen for business, and they do so by going outside of governor newsom's home in sacramento. about a dozen demonstrators showed up yesterday. organizers hoped the group would practice social distancing. as you can see there, that didn't happen. across the world there are almost 3 million confirmed cases

of covid-19. more than 200,000 people have died. laura? spain has lifted some of its restrictions for children, marcus. six weeks after that lockdown there first took effect. the new rules allow young people outdoors close to their homes for one hour a day. and there's got to be adult supervision. hard hit italy plans to gradually reopen starting next week. so did you catch this over the weekend, dr. anthony fauci had his dream come true. remember when he was asked which hollywood actor he would want to play him. well, "saturday night live" delivered him brad pitt. >> now there is a rumor that the president is going to fire me. let's see what he said about that. >> today i walk in, i hear i'm going to fire him. i think he's a wonderful guy. >> so, yeah, i'm getting fired. but until then, i'm going to be there putting out the facts for whoever is listening. >> okay, so the voice dead on. >> right?

their masks waiting to get back in. they were up late since there's no work the next morning. you can see smoke coming from the complex. fire broke out at about 3:00. they were able to get out quickly because they were still up watching tv. >> i heard a couple of explosions and wondering, is that gunshots or something like that. then i heard the neighbor upstairs running back and forth above us. i was thinking, what's going on upstairs? it sounded like they're panicking over something. >> i come out from my living room and tried to open my door, the back door, and then i feel really hot. and i told my son, it's a fire. it's a fire. we come out and i told the people come out, come out. there's a fire.

>> reporter: so far no word yet on the cause or how much damage. for the fattily there were no injuries. and back here live you can see firefighters here lined up along the street and police. we were asked earlier whether they were wearing ppe, protective -- personal protective equipment. it looks like they are not responding well to this fire, wearing just regular gear. a lot of the people here, again, said they were up very late. covid-19 shelter in place affecting them, allowing them to have some extra time to get out safely. reporting live from san bruno. >> all right, thank you very much, sharon. police are looking for clues about a homicide that happened in the outer sunset. details are very limited right now, but what we do know is that investigators are telling us a body was found in an apartment

yesterday. officers scoured a building between lawton and miraga. fewer cars on the roads are making things easier for caltrans workers at the highway 101/280 alemany interchange. crews are putting their finishing touches on the northbound alemany deck. work is expected to wrap up soon and for everything to be finished by sunday. by now you've had or heard of that conference call, many of them going awry. well, it happened in vallejo and what happened there was downright over the top. now an elected official is apologizing. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joining us now with those details of the person throwing the cat during the meeting, kris. >> reporter: yeah, marcus. i can't say that i have any good reason to report for throwing a cat especially during a teleconference call where everybody can see it, but i can show you what was leading up to

what happened on april 20th. take a listen. >> okay, first i'd like to introduce my cat. >> that is vallejo planning commissioner chris platzer on a zoom call on april 20th. he picked up and introduced his cat and then threw it off screen. he is also seen drinking out of a green bottle that appears to be a beer. we are trying to confirm reports that he resigned but a city spokesman said they have not had any contact since the april 20th meeting and have not received an official resignation. the statement reads in part the city does not condone the behavior that planning commissioner chris platzer exhibited during the april 20th planning commissioner meeting this type of behavior does not model the core values of the city of vallejo. whether or not he has resigned may be a moot point because on

tomorrow's city council agenda the mayor and another councilmember requested an action item to remove chris platzer from that position and you can assume that we will be there covering that meeting. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> kris, thank you. we have the latest numbers on bay area coronavirus numbers. more than 7,500 people have tested positive a. >> mayor london breed is making it known that ppe and testing shortages are still a concern. >> this should be a federal coordinated effort. we should not be having these conversations which is a big reason why we have to put these shelter in place orders because we don't have the resources we need to keep people safe especially around testing. >> she spoke on "face the nation" saying she will continue to fight to get basic supplies.

at least 2 dozen people have tested positive at a single room occupancy hotel in the mission district. it is on valencia street and had 52 total units. 22 residents and 2 staff members are among those infected last week. the other dozen or so residents who tested negative are back in other hotels. happening today as of this morning the marathon oil refinery in martinez plans to suspend all operations. we knew this was coming. the company announced plummeting demand for gas is behind the move. work started to wind down last weekend. today the process will be complete. it's not clear how long the refinery will be idle. between 800 and 1,000 people are being furloughed. this morning sausalito is

looking to possible new ways to enforce social distancing guidelines. the city had to close some beach parking lots. the harbor master said there were just too many people for the small area and many weren't wearing masks or even practicing social distancing. >> it was total mayhem yesterday and even friday was busier. i would say we had over 100 people on the beach. we just really want this virus to go away as fast as possible and that was not conducive to that happening. >> now the city says parking lots will remain closed there on weekends and holidays indefinitely. all right. monday morning, let's get a look at the forecast. we're coming off really nice weekend, don't you think, guys? >> it was so nice. >> it was hot. >> yesterday i did an outside

thank you very much, kari. new this morning one person recovering after being struck by a car in san jose. this video in to our newsroom shows the aftermath. it happened about 10:00 last night. the victim's condition is unknown. they're not saying if the driver will be charged. some southern california beaches are already open again and as you can see right here warm weather could not keep the crowds away over the weekend in orange county. beaches are set to open in san diego county. while some are concerned, beach lovers say they're ready. >> we're crazy to think we're only going to get the locals. >> it makes sense to open them and we think all the beaches should be open. >> openings in san diego county will roll out gradually with decisions made city by city. a lot of coastline will still be inaccessible today but in some cases surfing and swimming will again be allowed.

the coronavirus team's briefing originally didn't club the president. some weren't even televised but quickly turned into this tv show with the president often at the center. this is friday's press conference which came to an abrupt end with the president taking no questions and, of course, on thursday you had this. >> disinfectant knocks it out in a minute, one minute, and is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. it would be interesting to check that. you'll have to use medical doctors but it sounds interesting to me. >> the president said he was being sarcastic and wanted to, quote, see what would happen when reporters heard him say that about disinfectant. he would say later, again, he was speculating about the

benefit of somehow using disinfectant on hands. he never used the word hands in his speech there and, of course, we've been using hand sanitizer for any number of weeks. "the washington post" watched all those briefings. all 35, that's 28 hours. of those 28 hours, slightly less than half were president trump talking. in that time he's been asked 346 questions. in his answers he attacks someone a third of the time. one out of every four answers roughly contains what "the post" says is false information. one out of ten times the president speaks he's reminding us he cut off travel from china. "the new york times" over the weekend said concern is growing among republicans they could lose the presidency and the senate and increasing the call for the president to step away from the corona team's briefings. president trump reacting to news this morning that he is

considering firing the secretary of health and human services alex azar. he says those reports are not true. we'll be watching to see if there is a briefing. we'll tweet if also. there is. anticipated delays for the u.s. census count may well spill over to redistricting. that always follows the once a decade event. some areas that may have a big impact who controls state or local powers or what laws pass or fail. if the census does push its deadline back to next summer, which congress must still approve, the backups may eventually delay future primary elections. something good for you this morning coming out of southern california and, laura, this is a good one when a pandemic when a veteran turned 105 years old, well, of course the party comes to him.

>> fire trucks and military trucks led a parade of cars wishing sam sachs a happy birthday yesterday. it didn't stop there. the resident received some 7,000 cards including from the president. he planned to place u.s. flags on his front lawn. >> i asked for 105 flags. presently there are over 400 flags. who could have imagined this was happening to little sam sachs from grand forks, north dakota. >> sachs was a paraglider during the d-day invasion of normandy. yesterday's parade lasted about an honor and he received an honor from his birth city in grand forks. boy, 105, that is something to celebrate. >> he's still got it. he's moving along. >> that should be standard for what he's done.

especially the oak, pine and juniper. all that stuff flying through the air due to a lack of rain we've seen recently. to 83 degrees today and some upper 60s in san francisco and everywhere else kind of in between. we're still looking at some sunshine in the forecast going into the rest of the week. if you're planning to head out, a nice way to connect with the family enjoying some dinner outside. going into the next several days expect more sunshine. tomorrow our temperatures peak. some cooler air will start to come in from the north and the storm track will still be across the pacific northwest. still warm, dry weather for the near term.

a nice cooldown headed our way with some 80s in the inland areas tomorrow. then look at the 70s as we head to the end of the week. a nice week ahead. back to you. the only game in town scored some big numbers. the nfl says a record 55 million viewers watched the nfl draft between thursday and saturday. that's a spike of 37% over last year. some think the interest probably had to do with being inside so many of the coaches' homes because the draft was all remote. the league also raised more than $100 million for coronavirus relief efforts. still ahead on "today in the bay," some states like georgia have opened gyms and hair salons. the other states now thinking about doing the exact same things and which are not and what about california? plus, millions still waiting for the stimulus payments. when they'll finally see the checks in their mailboxes.
