linger and it will stay cool. only 58 degrees at half moon bay. we will look at our microclimates and talk about the weekend ahead coming up in a few minutes. >> sounds good, thank you. all beaches statewide will close starting tomorrow. >> here's nbc bay area's ian. >> after swarms of people blanketed orange county beaches now the governor is preparing to put a stop to it and announcing all state beaches and parks will close starting may 1st. he said overcrowded beaches was in violation of the shelter in place order. here's what the governor said monday. >> those images are an example of what not to see, people, what

not to do. this virus doesn't take the weekends off. >> beaches have been closed and re-opened in different parts of the state. we were talking to people about santa cruz being cut off. >> i understand it, and the beaches are becoming quite busy. >> if the curve is still flat, why are you making the conditions more extreme instead of less extreme and it is starting to make me question my rights as a citizen. >> no longer can you hangout on the sand starting this weekend, and a state-wide order trumps it, and we don't know if there will be any access to the pacific ocean. >> i don't understand the reason why. it's like, we need to get out and get air. >> ian cole, "today in the bay."

now in a big development in treating coronavirus. a drug made by a bay area company is showing promising signs it helps the sickest patients recover faster. the drug from tkez aveer is showing promising results in clinical trials. the national institute says preliminary data shows it reduced recovery time in the hospital by four days. just this morning on the "today" show dr. fauci spoke about the drug's promises. >> that's important. but it's the first step in what we project will be better and better drugs coming along, either alone or in combination, drugs of this type and drugs addressing other targets of the virus. so it's good news. >> the fda is expected to grant emergency approval for the drug as a frontline treatment.

the number of covid-19 patients in intensive care units r three 30% in three weeks according to the state data. there are 149 confirmed covid-19 patients, and that's down from a monthly peak of 212 patients back on april 7th. and then offering free covid-19 testing for l.a. residents. l.a. mayor, eric garcetti said they have the capacity to test 1,700 a day. mayor ga >> as long as this disease spreads we have to continue to scale. as long as this disease takes lives, we must test. we know that coronavirus is a silent killer that moves quietly through the population. >> people can immediately sign

up online for appointments. priority will still be given to people with symptoms, such as fever, cough and shortness of ss is looking to provide a safer environment for the homeless during the pandemic. this week they approved an initial plan and it's called for turning open spaces at schools into spots where homeless can pitch their tent at a safe distance, and it comes as the city is grappling with another idea, which is to lease hundreds of hotel rooms. things are still a little busy at sfo, because the new harvey milk terminal is opening, and today southwest is moving in and american airlines will likely move in by the end of may. happening today, the city of alameda tears the page from the playbook of its neighbor.

oakland. this is between grand and oak, and versailles avenue between central and fernside. alameda's new slow streets program like oakland's will be meant to help people with social distancing while they get out and exercise. and the soft closures will continue through the stay-at-home order. the college was granted $7 million in emergency federal funding for higher education. according to "the examiner" this morning, half of the money will go to students in need but undocumented students will not see any of it under the guidelines from the u.s. department of education. the city college urged the department of education to allow colleges to use the aid for all students. you have been dying to take a road trip through the state

>> and we are inching towards the weekend. >> yes, we are. it's still going to be really nice. we're expecting beautiful weather for the bay area. as we get up and out the door of course only essential workers, and we are in the mid-50s and then the rest of the day it will warm up nicely. if you are thinking about going out for a walk around the neighborhood or heading out to work, here's a look at the high temperatures for today. reaching up into the 70s in antioch and concord up to 70 degrees, and i don't think we will see many spots reaching 80 today, but it's still slightly above normal. as we go over towards the coast, it will stay foggy. very cool in half moon bay, reaching 60 degrees. if you are enjoying time outside with the family on the patio today, in foster city expect it to be gusty. our temperatures will reach in the upper 60s if you are thinking, shall we have dinner

inside or outside, and i think outside if you are willing to hold on to the table cloths because it will be gusty with a slight cooldown headed towards dinnertime. and here's a look at several storms that are still moving across the pacific northwest and still not bringing the bay area any rain. we did see an increase in cloud cover yesterday, but that since moved on. go into the next seven days we are still looking at a very active weather pattern for areas just to the north of california so we are not going to see many changes here even going into the middle of next week. we're looking at slightly above normal temperatures, more sunshine. there will be at times clouds passing when we see the storm systems to our north. by sunday i think we could see spotty drizzle but overall no measurable rain. it looks like as we go towards the middle of next week we will be warming up here, and we could see our high temperatures back into the low and mid-80s. it's going to feel like summer again next week.

as we head over to you, mike, you have been tracking the roads. what is going on this morning? >> not a lot, which is standard, what we expect. you look at the maps and see green sensors all around the bay and we zoom into one spot where you are having a reroute off of the freeway. caltrans continues to make great progress here. 101 southbound. right now you are diverted on to 280 until 6:00 a.m., and all week they have opened one lane, and right now there's the diversion. you see the folks in the right-hand corner, and i think that's water trucks and grinding trucks, and they have to put grooves into the new road surface to make traction better and they have to work on the drainage so there's a lot more to do even though it looks like it's done, it's not. expect one lane to open at 6:00

a.m. back to you. >> thanks, mike. new video this morning posted by chp. this is showing the end of a high-speed chase in vallejo. authorities used spike strips and one officer pulled off the so-called pit maneuver. they are not saying what charges the drivers are facing or why officers tried to stop the car. new changes are coming to the state capital as legislature is preparing to get back to work. the legislature is actually supposed to return on monday but new rules are in place. legislators can only bring one staff member with them to the building. there will be no face-to-face meetings and no lobbyist. the senate is considering remote voting instead of being invade the capital. assembly speaker says the new changes will help enforce social distancing guidelines. >> we are only going to be using three committees, and so we are

able to make sure we can maintain social distancing. >> he also adds if the pandemic does not start subsiding by june the government will consider using bigger venues to keep the legislators six feet apart while they vote. the way to resume criminal trials just got longer, and they added another 60 days, and that means across the state criminal jury trials won't resume until mid june, unless all parties agree to conduct them remotely. defense advocates have threatened a legal challenging arguing the rights to a speedy trial are now being ignored. more than half of the inmates at a federal prison in southern california now have tested positive for the virus. the federal brorough of prison says, nearly 600 inmates have

been impacted and two have died in what is called the worse outbreak in a prison. companies are asking for a temporary cut in the california marijuana taxes. businesses are taking a big hit because of the pandemic, and customers are now buying marijuana illegally because it's cheaper. they say the tax cut will help minority-owned businesses keep their employees. coming up next on "today in the bay," "nbc bay area responds." >> lots of products now have a covid-19 label on them. what do you do? can you trust them? i am consumer investigator, chris chmura, a warning for watch dogs and the red flags to look out for, next. and new data shows home buyers may be coming back to the

still resume but the first stage would have to involve informal workouts and that could happen in a matter of weeks. even if a miracle plays out and play resumes, don't expect to see the sharks at sap until the shelter-in-place is lifted. and then st. nick is taking time out of his busy schedule, and he has virtual meetings with kids across the country. he goes by santa chuck plant on facebook, and he says he is reminding kids to stay positive and well behaved during the pandemic, and if any parents try to pay him, he says it's all free. >> yeah, he's always watching. >> yes, he is.
