for today and the weekend coming up in a minutes. >> we look forward to that. thank you, kari. a drug made by a bay area company is showing promise isti so much so tracked by the fda as frontline treatment. tracie potts is live in washington with more for us. >> yeah, laura, there's lot of excitement around this drug. decemb deza vere. it's in clinical trials, and in those trials people who were very sick with covid-19, severe patients were able to get better 31% faster, in other words, they got out of the hospital in 11 days instead of 15 by taking this drug. there was also a slight impact on mortality rates. nothing significant, but enough to provide some hope. now president trump and others

are hoping the fda will fast track emergency use of this drug and the manufacturer, they are already ramping up to make more. >> the company is really committed to get it out as much as they can and as quickly as they can. i would hope that actually winds up being the case. i am pretty confident that will be the case because i believe they are committed to try and get it out as quickly as possible. >> that was dr. anthony fauci and he is on the "today" show, and you will see that full interview shortly. by the way, he says he's concerned about states reopening and partially re-opening and not following federal guidelines and wait until there's a 14-day decline of coronavirus cases. he says that's a big mistake. you will hear more on that interview on the "today" show. back to you. >> we will look forward to that. thank you very much.

mark zuckerberg's found tkaeu stanford are teaming up for the study. they are looking at the health-care workers over the next nine months, and they are looking how the virus spreads and if immunities kick in for those that recover. the zuckerberg initiative is providing a $13 million grant. when it comes to summer events and festivals, the outlook not looking so hot. bob redell has a rundown of what we will be missesiing over the spring and summer months. >> reporter: the list i am about to read off is by no means inclusive, but it gives you an idea of how covid-19 will affect your spring and summer events.

again, it's not inclusive, but for the first time the livermore rodeo is canceled, and same for the sonoma county fair, and the july fourth celebrations are off, and san ramon's art festival also a no go. another major financial blow to the city of san francisco, dream force scheduled for november has been called off. salesforce made that announcement, and it it is one of the city's largest business conventions. the san francisco symphony is done for the season. this was supposed to be the big year to celebrate the 20th year of its director to offset the loss of millions of dollars, and

theory easy to pull with approved plans but then the shelter-in-place order occurred at midnight on monday night. >> each county is putting in its own construction measures in place before work can be starting back, such as face masks and hand sanitizing requirements and limits on the number of workers. happening today, western contra costa county leaders are holding a coronavirus virtual town hall. what they want to do here is work with people. two supervisors will join the police chief and fire chief and city manager, and you can facebook page and that starts at 10:00 a.m. and then a bold plan in response in struggling.

they are calling for a mass rent strike. they are suggesting people not pay rent in may. this is to support those who economically can't do so right now. they are demanding rent relief and calling for a bold new action on housing solutions. this is something good for you this morning. a landlord in santa rosa who is giving his tenants a huge break for the month of april. >> yeah, he's really trying to help them out in a very big way. he actually gave his entire stimulus check back to his tenants. then he even doubles down, matching his $3,400 check, and he gave more than $7,000 back to his tenants by cutting their rent by $500. this tenant, when she got the phone call she said she was grateful. >> i was grateful but i was not really surprised he would do something like that, because he's a really good person. >> my wife and i spent hours

right now we are headed to concord, and the temperature trend will be in the mid-50s and then to the mid-70s this afternoon. we will have a look at the weekend forecast and the sierra snowpack in a few minutes. good morning. happy thursday to you. thursdays can be tough because that's when we get first-time jobless claims, when we learn how many of our friends and neighbors and fellow americans have lost their jobs in the past week and successfully applied for unemployment claims, and that number is more than 30 million this week -- sorry, 3 million, correction, creating 30 million. i apologize for the error there. we could soon add many bay area workers, because we have lyft laying off, lyme, the scooter company and the ecigarette company, juul, as well. tesla made a small profit last

quarter, and to put it another way the electric car company is making money off of the success of other car companies that sell gasoline powered cars. as far as musk he went on a tirade in the phone call with analysts using a four-letter word as he lashed out against the stay-at-home orders, saying they are unconstitutional and the governmental agencies ordering them are fascist. this is not the first time musk shocked investors and he lashed out on the phone calls before and he made tweets that got him in trouble with the government regulators after they determined those tweets were misleading the markets, and nasa did a federal review of spacex after musk smoked pot legally on a podcast.

normal hours and some stores will still open one hour early for seniors and people with disabilities. the san antonio zoo is turning part of its park into a drive through. visitors can see tigers and bears and much more all from the security of their car. and the drive through experience was originally scheduled for just this weekend but tickets sold out in two hours, so the zoo extending it through mid may. one illinois mom is hoping to bring animals to your backyard so she recently lost her job as an aide at a local school so to stay busy she started making these tiny picnic tables for squirrels full time. take a look at that there. thanks to her son sharing the photos on twitter she is selling out of the tables and she even create a created a little storefront at

have seen with our automatic sensors we have out there the central sierra is at 47% of normal, right around the lake tahoe area, and statewide the average is about 42% of normal. this is our summertime water store edge we use here in the bay area, so once that snow-melt really gets under way we start to see it filling up our reservoirs. in cupertino we are starting out with a beautiful start to the day, and if you are in san jose, you are seeing these clouds overhead, and it's gorgeous. the low clouds will clear out soon and then expect a high of 74 degrees in san jose. upper 70s in the inland parts of the east bay. for the north bay, napa will reach 77 degrees. san francisco in the mid-60s. notice half moon bay only stays in the 50s today, and that's because most likely the fog will not clear going into today. we have seen a storm system

moving by yesterday that brought us more clouds but today we are kind of in between right now, but notice there's still activity out there in the pacific and that's what will move towards the pacific northwest missing the bay area with the rain, but it looks busy up there with round after round of rain every couple days. here we are looking at the dry weather that will continue. for the neck couple of days for the inland areas we're well above normal, even after the cooldown we had in the first part of the week. as we go into the weekend, slightly cooler. next week we are looking at highs that will be trending back into the 80s. mike, you have been watching the roads. what is going on out there right now? >> kari, over all we have great speed sensors in the green, and that means you are close to the limit or at the limit, maybe a little over. in the south bay we had a crash blocking over half the freeway, and i will use the past t did n

the progress we made with the social distancing. people were gathered in groups and sunbathing, and some of them a lot closer than the recommended six feet in the shelter order. in the memo obtained by nbc news, the governor gives police chiefs up and down california a heads up that beaches and parks will be shutdown much to the frustration of some folks we spoke with in the bay area. >> the curve is flat, and that was the idea to flatten the curve, right? if the curve is still flat why are you making the conditions more extreme instead of less extreme? that makes me concerned about my rights as a citizen. >> reporter: the curve is flatter but it's not flat as the gentleman said. the number of of people infected with covid-19 is still on the rise in california, and so if we

there. >> reporter: marcus, the amazon employee that died of complications of covid-19 last worked at the center behind me here in tracy on april 1st, and that's according to sacramento media. it's not clear how or when he contracted the coronavirus, but according to reports he had no symptoms of the disease when he was here at the warehouse. amazon released a statement releasing sympathy and sadness over his death. you will recall earlier this month that an employee at the safe way center here in tracy died from covid-19 complications. the grocery chain says employees must pass a temperature scan before entering the facility. whole foods and target and walmart, fedex among others are asking customers to boycott their employers tomorrow on may

we are talking top business leaders and top economists and indeed some of his own scientists. president trump says he is envisioning a time when we have that v-shaped recovery, we are up here and then down here and then we will get back to where we were. with no vaccine and no cure, the virus may still kill and that may keep people out of the economy. the president envisions by this fall there will be full football stadiums. >> i don't want people to get used to this because this virus is going to be gone. when it's gone you want to get back to normal. you are not going to have a stadium that is 30% the size of what it was three months ago. if i watch alabama play lsu, i don't want to see 20,000 people instead of 120,000 people. >> in an interview yesterday the president's son-in-law, jared

if you go south of the bay area, there are no drought conditions but you can see the way it trends for us, with spots like santa rosa needing 16 inches of rain to catch up to normal. as we go through the month of may we start to trend drier as we look at our overall weather pattern. we are looking at temperatures today and at least feeling much more comfortable. it was warm to start out this week and we set some record highs in the north bay, but we are looking at more seasonable weather. reaching in the upper 70s in the north bay, and san jose will reach 74 degrees. notice the 50s along the coast. here's why. we will see the low clouds and fog and mist, and we are looking at the systems moving across the pacific northwest bringing them lots of rain, and we are missing out on the rain, but we are getting cool air moving in. we are going to have another rush of cooler air going into

the weekend as the storms move to the north. as we look at our overall 7-day forecast for the inland areas, we are going to see some warmer than normal temperatures for tomorrow, for today and tomorrow. going into the weekend, just a touch cooler, still really nice and comfortable. next week we are looking at a warm-up and will be back in the mid-80s. we will watch for the possibility of more records once again. as we head over to you, mike, what has been happening with the morning commute? >> things have been calmer and calmer. we had one over here outside of the tunnel, and i never saw slowing. southbound 101 overnight closure cleared, and they have one lane. they have damp roadways because they are keeping it wet as they do the grinding work trying to reduce the dust. more work to go on there with

welcome back. it's 6:56. here's the latest news this morning. breaking news to tell you about with the latest jobless numbers. they are out. another 3.8 million americans filed first-time claims and that's more than expected and brings the total number of claims since mid march to more than 30 million. this adds up to more than 1 in 6 american workers. some economists are forecasting a possible 20% unemployment rate for april. the numbers seem to be weighing in on wall street. here's a live look at the big

board for you right now with the dow down 234 points. before this morning's data came out nearly 3.7 million californians recently filed for unemployment benefits, and the surge in claims is another financial toll on state jobless funds. at least six states including california have already warned they may need to borrow billions of federal dollars to help pay benefits. workers at several retail distribution centers are planning to strike after an amazon worker at a distribution center died from complications from coronavirus. we have a live look at the amazon distribution center in tracy. the employee last worked at that facility on april 1st, and it's not clear how the person became infected. but tomorrow workers from companies including amazon, target and fedex plan to hold may day strikes over what they say are unsafe work conditions.

new details this morning in a month's old mystery finally solved. maybe you remember dashcam video that showed a car plunging off a cliff in late december. divers tried for weeks to find signs of the car, and some even thought maybe that video had been doctored. but chp just announcing the driver was a san francisco woman named tracy ivory sinclair. they id'd her from the remains eventually recovered and matched it with the type of car she owned. that car still has not been found. pg&e will have to revamp the way it inspects high-voltage power lines. that's what a judge ordered. the judge said pg&e will have to hire in-house experts to over see, and they are requiring
