good morning. it's the 1st of may, may day. and in just a few hours, employees from companies including amazon, target, walmart and insta card plan to hold strikes over what they say are unsafe work place conditions amid the pandemic. plus -- >> this is not the total answer by any means, but it's a very important first step. also, we're waiting for a better time line of when gilead sciences' drug is rolled out to help patients treat coronavirus. we are listening in to see what he has to say.

>> in the meantime we are keeping an eye on the numbers in the bay area. they are now over 5,000 cases. and a good morning to you. i'm marcus washington. mike will have a look at traffic in just a bit. first, a look at the -- it's friday, right? >> it is friday. it could be freak friday, who knows? >> it is one of those days we want to kind of enjoy and think about the weekend is here. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the forecast for us. kari, what is it going to give us today? yeah, it looks really nice for today. as we look at san jose and look at our temperature trend we had a lot of clouds yesterday morning to start out. i think it will be clearer today, and we're starting out with mid-50s.

we'll see our temperatures trend very nice going into the low 70s today, slightly above normal. as we get climates and what to expect today we're going temperatures for the inland areas in the upper 70s once again and staying cool along the coastline with some low 60s as we get a little bit more sunshine today. we'll talk more about this and look ahead to the weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. in washington the push is on to quickly develop a vaccine to prevent millions more being infected with coronavirus. "today in the bay's" tracie potts reports on that plus day one of the federal government taking a back seat to states. >> reporter: the race is on, operation warp speed, a federal/private partnership to develop 300 million doses of coronavirus vaccine in the next eight months. >> whatever the maximum is, whatever you can humanly do, we're going to have. you know who is the judge of it?

i am. i'm the judge of it. >> reporter: one of the top drug makers is scaling up production with research still under way. >> a vaccine valuable to the public on an emergency use basis by the end of the year. >> reporter: the hunt for a miracle drug as more stay home orders expire today in states where covid-19 cases are still rising. michigan's governor facing protests and the possible lawsuit for trying to keep people at home. texas mayor refusing to visit malls and restaurants reopening this week. >> no one in my family will be there. everyone has to make their own choices. >> reporter: this pennsylvania hairstylist chose to reopen no matter what the governor says. >> i have employees who say i can't eat if it's three or four weeks. i had to make the decision. >> reporter: new york shutting down subways overnight for cleaning and worried about paying public employees. >> the state has a $13 billion

deficit. they provided us nothing. nothing for police, nothing for firefighters. >> reporter: one report predicts states could see a $200 billion shortfall in the next year. tracie potts, nbc news. tensions are rising this morning between the state and some beach communities in southern california. huntington beach says that it is not shutting down its beaches without a fight. last night the city council voted to pursue a legal challenge to governor newsom's order to close all beaches in orange county. this is to enforce social distancing guidelines. that order starts today. huntington beach leaders say most people in their city were complying with social distancing when thousands packed beaches last weekend. meantime in the bay area new restriction also go into effect along the coast on monday. mayors from nearly every santa clara county city are calling on the county leaders to ramp up testing. many signed a letter submitted by the city's association of

santa clara county to the board of supervisors. the letter calls on officials to create a list of test sites as well as add more locations. it also mentions a recent request from governor newsom's testing task force that communities create partnerships. santa clara county is currently testing about 600 people a day. the long debated closure of a jail inside san francisco's hall of justice is one step closer to reality this morning. a supervisor's committee approved the measure and it may receive a full vote next tuesday. critics say the seventh floor jail is past the point of costly renovations. supporters believe it is now a good time as any to close it permanently. the closure may happen by november. about a dozen protesters last night lying down in front of the home of san francisco mayor london breed. they posted this photo demanding more to be done to get the homeless out of harm's way

during the pandemic. mayor breed says san francisco's homeless plan is under intense financial and staffing strain already as they try to house people in hotel rooms. they were going to run about $200 a night. in a news conference wednesday she tried to put her foot down warning anyone thinking about showing up there for a hotel room should stay away instead. the mayor's office says as far as the hotels go, if you're not in the system by now you're certainly not going to be added at this junction. when it comes to making it in the bay and around the nation, housing rights activists are using may day as a platform to protect the threat of evictions and foreclosures. today's events include a car caravan protest demanding debt forgiveness. organizers plan to meet up at 10:00 a.m. and caravan for two hours. new details for you this morning. oakland is releasing the next

round of street closures for its slow streets program. this map shows all the streets that will be closed. one of the biggest closures will be east 19th street starting at lake merritt. oakland leaders have closed more than seven miles of streets all over the city. the goal is to allow more social distancing for people to walk, bike, and exercise. the city of oakland plans to close another four or five miles of streets by next friday. during these tough times two perfect strangers are starting a group to do something good for people all over the bay area. two women decided to start a volunteer program called perfect strangers. this is to help the most vulnerable groups during the shelter in place. volunteers bringing those groceries and essential items to those at risk. so the service is available in many bay area counties. the program is also happening out east in philadelphia and washington, d.c. the women say they plan to extend services until the end of

beautiful, dark and early start to our weekend. it is the start of the weekend. >> and who needs one? >> i. >> raise your hand. >> it's great to be here with you this morning. >> it certainly is. let's look at what we can expect. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that. something we can be excited about today with this forecast? yes, it looks really nice for today. in fact as we start out the month of may we're going to see our temperatures warming up just a bit as we are still looking at dry weather. let's head to walnut creek and see how our day is shaping up, mid-50s and throughout the day we'll see a mostly sunny sky and reaching into the upper 70s as we go into later today. as we check it out for the rest of the bay area we are going to see our temperatures ranging from the low 60s near the coast

to the upper 70s, even up to 80 degrees today. for the most part this is the weather we've had from the past couple of days, some breezy winds, sunshine, and mild weather. just a little bit above with san jose reaching 75. checking out the weather for the rest of the country. you may be calling your friends and family. i wanted to show you what they're dealing with now. look at how warm it is in oklahoma city. it's going to be up to 93 degrees today. you can see that surge of warm air making it further to the north but then we are also going to see that cooling down over the next couple of days but still very warm even for this time of year. we're starting out with a lot of warm weather. it's been very active in terms of storms. right now it's fairly quiet for the west but we're going to see several storms moving across the that rain, so we're still looking at some dry weather, all of those storm systems moving to the north, but at least at times

we will see some cooler weather moving in. but it's going to be warm as we go into next week. cooler for the weekend but check out next week. yeah, that says 90 in the forecast. we're going to see that by the end of next week. as we head over to you, mike, how is it looking for the morning commute? well, my plan later on today is to try to find a place that will deliver a fan to my house looking at those temperatures. looking at a nice, easy drive, kari. no problem driving if you are an essential worker, and we thank you for that. northbound 101 approaching hillsdale, a crash into the ditch. it looks like chp just cleared that from the report. i'll double-check and let you know if there are any problems. getting out of the city is the issue with southbound 101. that construction continues overnight but this morning note the time that i listed there. it's 7:00 a.m. the live look from our caltrans camera shows you the progress but they are in the lanes they

would normally open at 6:00. great progress. they're going to be able to open the majority of the lanes southbound at 7:00 a.m. northbound. well, that access will be restricted until i think 3:00 this afternoon but it looks like they're coming up on the end of at least this phase of the project. we'll look for their update as well. right now no access 101 just at 280, the same as yesterday. >> good to know. even though it's may 1st, there's still the threat of avalanche in the sierra. rescuers near independence peak in inyo county posted these photos when two skiers became trapped. one woman had to be airlifted from the scene after being swept away. the other skier managed to hang on to rocks during the slide and then moved downhill to locate his companion. the good news is both will fully recover. two naval ships have taken new missions. the naval ship "mercy" was providing the l.a. area hospitals relief by treating

non-covid patients. but area nursing homes are seeing the most cases of coronavirus. some 40 sailors have been sent to an orange county nursing facility to help out there. the "usns comfort" was in new york city and is now heading to norfolk, virginia. asylum seekers in limbo in mexico will have to wait a little longer for any kind of hearing. the white house is citing the pandemic as the reason for keeping immigration court hearings suspended, at least until the start of june. critics blame the white house for its policy arguing asylum seekers face much harsher conditions. happening today immigrant rights supporters have mayday protests at the state capitol. groups plan to drive there together to take part. after meeting in fairfield, bay area groups will join other caravans at south side park in sacramento at noon. that's where cars will parade in front of the capitol building.

events include a virtual rally. the california department of finances urging all state agencies to make immediate budget cuts to prepare for the recession. according to "the press democrat" a memo was sent out to agencies asking to halt unnecessary travel and vacation buybacks this year. the state controller says when the pandemic started california had about $20 billion in reserves but that money is quickly depleting. nearly 4 million people filed for unemployment. 4:51. this morning democratic presidential candidate joe biden is addressing sexual assault allegations. the former vice president is scheduled to speak in about ten minutes on msnbc's "morning joe." we are tracking that and will bring you his response in the next hour. former staffer reid claims biden

good morning. when covid-19 first broke out various law enforcement agencies banded together. agents involved in operation stolen promise tell us they've already gotten 14 search warrants, seized $3.2 million in illicit proceeds, arrested nine people, and made 419 coronavirus-related seizures. at sfo a shipment from japan called virus shutout confiscated, feds say, because its safety hasn't been evaluated and it isn't registered with the u.s. government. the manufacturer did not respond to us. at the mexican border 900 bottles of counterfeit clorox intercepted filled with bleach so diluted agents said it was ineffective. agents impounded these imports from the uk. agents say the vials are fake covid-19 test kits. >> we don't know the quality control. we don't know if these items
