before the heat up moves in. over to martinez to see how our day shapes up. with a lot of sunshine we'll see our temperature trends starting to rise going into late morning into the afternoon. it may be a degree or two warmer than yesterday. still going to be fairly comfortable with some of our inland valleys in the east bay and north bay reaching into the low 80s while along the coast. we'll talk about how hot it gets in the full micro climate forecast. breaking news out of the south bay. santa clara police are investigating a double stabbing. this happened on homestead road. this is near lawrence expressway. no word on the condition of the victims or the suspect description. of course we will bring you updates throughout the morning. the white house is

downplaying dire predictions that the daily desk could double by june of this year. "today in the bay's" tracie potts joins us with more on that and president trump on the road for the first time in a month, tracie? >> reporter: just over a month, actually, laura. he's heading to arizona to see a mask production facility. last in the state he said we could be fine by april and now it's may and there are some dire numbers to report this morning. "the new york times" cites a report predicting 200,000 cases and nearly 300,000 deaths a day by june 1st, nearly doubling what we're seeing now. a separate university of washington model shows deaths skyrocketing to 135,000 by august. >> there's certainly going to be more transmission, more cases and, unfortunately, more deaths. >> reporter: as much of the

country starts to reopen there's open defiance of social distancing. police are cracking down in some areas. >> don't make us treat you like a criminal. >> reporter: as other states back off. >> we don't want to make criminals out of innocent people. >> reporter: unemployment expected to explode. >> i expect a number between 16% and 20% unemployment. we're going to need a phase four deal. >> reporter: instead of working on coronavirus funding the senate is back in washington approving a backlog of judges. >> i don't think anybody could seriously argue that filling critical national security posts is not essential senate business. >> judicial nominees, legal immunity for big corporations, in all due respect, republican leader, these are not the nation's most urgent priorities right now. >> reporter: senators working under new conditions with members of the house still scattered across the country.

and some of those members want to come back but they want rapid results testing as they come back to washington which is still a hot spot where cases are increasing of the president offered it, but then the top senate mitch mcconnell and nancy pelosi said, no, because they think testing needs to happen elsewhere more urgently. back to you. >> all right, thank you very much, tracie. the nation's top expert on covid-19 is minimizing one theory recently played out by the white house. zi an interview with national , dr. anthony fauci says there is no scientific evidence the virus was made in a chinese lab. he says researchers are leading to the conclusion it could not have been deliberately or artificially manipulated.

it was started in a wuhan lab. president trump has since doubled down on the theory. 5:04 time for mother's day, governor newsoms can help decide which businesses are a go. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda live for us in downtown walnut creek. sharon, i'm being told what's expected to open could really cause a lot of traffic down there. >> reporter: yeah, and that is very good news. now i come here quite a bit and it's been a ghost town. take a look at this flower shop behind me. you can see the windows are still covered up here. so this is very good news for local businesses. under governor newsom's order florists and bookstores can reopen along with other nonessential stores starting this friday. they have to use social distancing measures and do curbside pickup. so perhaps take mom out for a stroll and shopping this mother's day, all local governments are looking at ways to reopen businesses safely.

mayor london breed says she's open to ideas and so are store owners. >> and the goal is to do it and do it responsibly whenever the opportunity presents itself to open anything in the city. >> we're retraining to shop for books elsewhere. for us, it is essential for us to stay and keep that connection with our customers and that we're at the top of mind for when somebody is making a book purchase, they're coming to us. >> reporter: shoppers we talked to yesterday said they're up for this modified way of shopping versus receiving so many packages at home. and back here live in downtown walnut creek so many restaurants are still open doing takeout and are looking forward to this extra foot traffic but, of course, governor newsom saying if the rise in coronavirus cases goes up, then they'll all have to shut down again, at least at nonessential stores. reporting live, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> if you're going to go out, remember social distancing. thank you, sharon. despite governor newsom's plan to move into phase two of easing

shelter at home restrictions, los angeles' mayor says they're not ready to take that step. mayor garcetti says many of the businesses will not be able to reopen friday saying if they do and they return too soon, well, that may undo the positive effects of social distancing and self-isolating. >> my promise to each and every one of you we will continue to be guided by first the medical advice we get from public health professionals. second, by making sure we are not just saving lives but thinking about people's livelihoods as well and that, third, we will share all of our decision making and all of our data with you. >> county supervisors will vote on proposed guidelines for how businesses there should operate once they're allowed to reopen. stanford has hit a major milestone when it comes to actually doing surgeries now.

the hospital resuming those surgeries after connecting a mass testing of its employees. stanford leaders say it's testing more than 11,000 employees out of 14,000 workers. only 0.3% without symptoms tested positive for covid-19. the hospital says new protocols are now in place including daily screening of employees and patients when they arrive at the clinic. san francisco county -- excuse me, san francisco continues to push and provide more for those who are working on the front lines of the crisis. today supervisors will debate adding incentive pay and hazard pay for employees and homeless shelters and other high occupancy essential job sites. the city this week also finalized a free testing program for all essential workers whether or not they show symptoms. happening today santa clara county is hoping to vote on a plan aimed at trying to maintain the current drop in all the congestion we see on the roads

even during -- even when the pandemic ends. a proposal calls for commute free commitment from silicon valley companies. it would encourage extending telecommuting to cut down on air pollution. a look at how clear it is. the spare the air season began yesterday and of course a record low number of cars on the road. they have dropped 20% or more on the pandemic and that is good news. it's been clear the past few days. >> that very nice weather and some fresh air but we have started to see a few more cars out on the roads recently so we'll see how that goes with our air quality as we start out this morning it's a chilly start in the north bay down to 41 degrees in napa and in santa rosa but

compare that to concord where we have 56 degrees and we're in the low 50s in san jose. you'll see our temperatures in the mid-50s to start and then trending into the mid-70s by noon. we're going to see sunshine and warming temperatures just slightly warmer today compared to yesterday. so i'll be watching this and we'll talk more about a hotter forecast ahead. you've been talking a traffic alert. you caught me tracking that traffic alert. on the very edge of alameda county, look at your maps. dublin above where it says hayward. dublin for 580 westbound. we have a little slowing but lanes are clear now and so there should be the dublin grade. over here we do have a re-establishment of traffic flow. there's traffic control now

temperatures warming up today reaching into the upper 70s by early in the afternoon. we are going to continue to heat up this week. some will be hitting the low 90s. we'll talk more about this in the forecast coming up. good morning and a very happy tuesday to you. "the wall street journal" is reporting this morning that the bay area e-cigarette company juul is going to to washington, d.c. that makes sense. the company didn't need to be in the bay area. it was just founded by some stanford grads from here and juul's biggest challenge is regulatory. washington is where the regulators are. it does, though, bring up the question how many smaller companies will choose to stay here if and when the pandemic ends. san francisco has some of the highest rents in the world and up until now the justification many had was this is where the best talent is. you have to come to the bay area. but this whole idea of working

from home may change that as both employees and bosses realize it is possible to conduct business from your home and it kind of doesn't working receiving jobless benefits, california, it's costing enough money california has become the very first state to borrow money from the federal government to pay for jobless benefits. "the journal" says california asks the u.s. treasury for $348 million. nearly 4 million californians are out of work and on unemployment benefits. speaking of numbers, new numbers reinforce what we've been talking about with houses. not only are prices nationwide not going down, they're going up. far fewer people buying homes, of course, but demand is down but so, too, are supplies. far too few people selling. the latest numbers from the national association of realtors show, and, again, nationwide, home p% this month

compared to last year when life was normal. inventory, though, the number of houses, marcus and laura, on the market right now is at a five-year low. >> people just want to sit and stay, i guess. shutdowns of meat packing plants are hitting home to burger chains. wendy's had to remove burgers from some locations. at least three san jose locations were out of the hamburger patties. some longtime wendy's lovers invoking the phrase where's the beef. recent shifts to fresh beef has left them more vulnerable. >> it's cinco de mayo and this year just happens to fall on taco tuesday and despite the pandemic restaurants are still finding ways to celebrate. can you get free queso blanco.

opportunity to move yourself in a different direction. it gets better because you've learned the lessons from the first time. >> so true. john stewart told one student to start living in the moment right after he apologized for not being oprah. >> we all do that. >> that's pretty cool. >> it's nice that they got some good advice. they're not going to hear any commencement speeches this year. >> i think that may top it for some of them. >> big time. let's look at the forecast this morning. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that, starting out nice and cool this morning, kari. yeah, and we've also seen a lot of clear skies around the bay area. here is a look at that view as you're heading through dublin. we can see a lot of the headlights there on our camera. more people getting up and out the door. if you're still at home and thinking of something nice to do outside in the north bay around petaluma, we are going to see

temperatures in the middle of the afternoon at about 80 degrees. the wind at about 10 to 15. so if you're grilling, it's going to blow the smoke away from the patio area. also warm temperatures going into the afternoon. enjoy dinner outside with all of that sunshine. it won't be as hot as the weather we're getting ready for. as we look at our high temperatures for the day, low 80s for the north bay. coastal areas will stay in the 60s. i don't think we'll see much of a warm-up even by the end of the weekend. a wide range in temperatures across the bay area. as we check out our forecast we are going to see high pressure continuing to build here and that will keep it very warm especially as it moves right over the bay. that gives us that sinking air and as it sinks it compresses and warms up. the good news is we do have some relief coming our way by the end of the weekend and we may even see some rain in the forecast next week. here is a look at our seven-day

forecast showing the temperatures that will be in the low 80s, upper 80s tomorrow and then some 90s for a couple of days. and saturday is also pretty warm but then by sunday it's feeling much better and, of course, that's mother's day. don't forget that it's time to start making those plans for san francisco, for the most part, staying in the 60s and 70s over the next seven days. mike, you've been keeping an eye on a traffic alert. what's going on right now? >> i'll take to you that traffic alert. i want to stop by dublin and zoom to 580 approaching schaefer ranch road. it was focusing into the red zone. i was told lanes would clear. starting to improve the speeds. i think it was a distraction and a little bit of a lag. traffic is relatively light so it was able to clear to dublin grade. they do still have traffic moving in both directions but there's traffic control.

two southern california cities are reopening their municipal beaches after submitting a we work social distancing plan. laguna beach leaders say they revised plans and those plans will prevent got the attention two weeks ago. sunbathers will not be allowed but joggers, surfers and swimering will haswi swimmers will have access. a case that is challenging its stay-at-home orders. justices will rule on whether or not the governor's executive order should remain in place. oral arguments will be made against the current order today. the suit also seeks to block an extension on the order.

the governor says the order will save lives. we all need something good right about now and today is teacher appreciation day with all the online learning going on. i'm guessing most parents are really appreciate what teachers do right about now. i know i've heard you praise your kids' teachers. >> always, always. she's amazing. but in this story we're talking about a nebraska elementary school librarian really helping to keep her students' love of reading alive with the help of costumes, a green screen, and a whole lot of heart. >> i don't have any kids of my own, but they are my kids. i have 750-some kids and i just want them to know that we care about them, we love them and we miss them. >> isn't that sweet? the love to show how much her videos mean to them coming up on the "today" after "today in the

celebration that has police concerned about what may happen today. plus, cracking down. a live report on the growing number of citations issued across the bay area for social distancing violators. and thank you so much for joining us here on "today in the bay." i'm marcus washington. >> along with mike and kari, welcome to tuesday morning. let's get a look at the forecast. does the warm-up start today, kari? it'll be a couple degrees warmer. we'll start to feel it tomorrow. we have a clear view of our live look in walnut creek and so our temperatures start out nice in the upper 40s and low 50s, and then we start to see it trending upwards late morning into the afternoon. as we head to the low 80s for the inland east bay, along the coast highs in the low 60s.

we'll talk more about how hot it gets and exactly where coming up in the micro climate forecast. cinco de mayo is a holiday people like to celebrate together. officers want to avoid what happened when a huge crowd gathered for an impromptu celebration. they certainly weren't social distancing. nbc bay area's kris sanchez is this morning. she has more on this story for us. kris? >> reporter: the burnout marks in the intersection here another story and king as that large crowd gathered on sunday night. and when we say there was a crowd, there was a crowd. hundreds of people were out. the witness who took the pictures say nobody was wearing a mask, nobody was keeping a six foot social distance. >> obviously it's blatant

disrespect for others. it's incomprehensible really what happened. >> but if people think my officers are going into crowds to try to break them up, to cite people for violating social distancing orders, that's not going to happen. >> reporter: i want to take a look at covid-19 infections in san jose. as of yesterday nearly 1,500 cases in the city. the majority of the cases and all of santa clara county and new data shows that latinos are getting sick at a higher rate accounting for 38% of cases but only 27% of the population n. .anta clara county community a reminder the shelter order says you can only socialize with people in your same household so maybe we do things just a little bit differently. the police chief says he's not going to send his officers into the middle of something like

that. however, his job is to enforce public safety not necessarily the public health order. >> bay area law enforcement agencies are cracking down on people who are violating that shelter at home order. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live now. the mayor of san francisco is issuing her own warning this morning. >> reporter: maintain that social distance or one of the city's most popular parks could be shut down. we're talking about delores park. this past weekend a san francisco police chief bill scott says that a lot of people hung out at the park and did no. it's not okay to gather in large groups. san francisco plans to keep an eye out this coming week. along the san mateo coastline hundreds of people were in violation of the stay-at-home order. this according to pacifica

police. the police department says between friday and sunday they contacted over 1,400 people. of those they ordered almost 300 to leave the area because they traveled more than ten miles from their home for recreational purposes in violation of the order. eight people were given written citations. and this past saturday santa cruz shut down between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to discourage out-of-towners from visiting their area while giving locals an opportunity during the sunset hours. >> thanks for the latest there, bob. two new testing sites are opening in the north bay. both are opening as part of governor newsom's plan tteing s. similar sites opened yesterday including one in san jose. the sites opening today are in santa rosa and petaluma. both are by appointment only. new details this morning, a new ucsf study focusing on san

francisco's mission district finding that low-income minority men to be more at risk of getting the coronavirus. researchers tested 3,000 residents and workers finding more than 2% tested positive. the vast majority were men, many of whom were financially impacted from the pandemic and could not work from home. here are the latest numbers for you here in the bay area. nearly 8,800 hundred cases. santa clara county added 13 cases but that is its lowest one day total since march 20th. 312 people have died. >> workers at two san francisco trader joe stores have tested positive for covid-19. according to "the chronicle" they stopped working there april 10th and co-workers learned of the diagnosis a week ago. then on sunday an employee at the 9th street location south of market tested positive.

crews did a deep cleaning overnight and reopened yesterday. despite the pandemic northern california hospitals on the whole are actually seeing far less emergency room visits and in some cases lowering staff levels. doctors at uc davis say the emergency room is 50% as busy as it was before the pandemic. some of it may have to do with many people hunkering down at home. others may simply fear the risk of being exposed at an e.r. one uc davis doctor says the staff is being encouraged to take time off now this is before a possible surge in the coronavirus patients coming later. >> we are removing nurses and physicians who are still being paid but we're giving them breaks from shifts we don't need them there. when the surge comes they might be working double time. >> mid month last month about 1% of those coming through the doors at uc davis were testing

positive. >> experts are trying to relieve some of the mental stress when they know they have to deliver at a hospital where fr contracting the virus and then even passing it on to their new baby. the president of the march of dimes says there are ways to manage those fears. >> as much as possible to manage that stress and anxiety with plenty of rest, exercise, breathing, all the things that we know to do but also just do the things all the rest of us all have to do, right, maintaining our social distance, doing proper hand washing, hygiene, wearing a mask. >> they recommendto find out wh been made and how to prepare. oakland is launching a new program to help those trying to make it in the bay during the

pandemic. they will provide houses to the homeless and those most at risk. and it's part of what the city is calling operation home base. they provide three meals per day for those residents. here is something good for you from an artistic community. he is creating sidewalk art at his local park in lincoln outside of sacramento. he does a face every day for the past 47 days. >> the first 25 days i was drawing star wars characters and then i ran out of star wars characters so i just was thinking of people that everyone will recognize and depp sided to

go with marvel characters next. >> he says the real superheroes are those on the front lines. we see them every day going to work, helping those who are just not able to make it right now. >> exactly. so nice of him to share his talents, too. >> absolutely. all right, well, we have a talented one on our team, meteorologist kari hall, always giving us what we need to know about the forecast. you are monitoring when it's hot/cold. today what are we going to see? >> we're starting out cool but it will warm up going into the afternoon, just a degree or two warmer than yesterday, so still a really nice day ahead as we check out our temperature trend in martinez. mid-50s. we'll see our trend into the mid-70s by lunch time. and then continuing to heat up.

we're up to 80 in napa be a santa rosa. san francisco will be in the mid-60s while san jose will see a high of about 79 degrees. so we'll talk more about this and how hot. how is the commute looking, mike? more businesses will be opening. we'll see how that affects the flow in the morning. the alerts in mountain house cleared but we have crashes now in byron and brentwood so that may be an issue for us, similar people coming down into the tri-valley. we'll check on that in a second. the fact we've been sheltering at home and getting back to classic activities. chef claire out of oakland reminds us about the simple but effective way that pickling can help us stock our pantry. chef claire also has an instagram class on salsa

temperature trend for the morning. it starts out in the mid-50s and sunshine for today. a nice one but we're about to heat up. we'll talk about how hot it gets in the micro climate forecast coming up. well, this may sound like a scene out of a hollywood blockbuster. chp telling us a car chase suspect dumped nearly a million dollars out the window. officers telling us this all happened when they tried to pull over a car in merced and that driver just took off. chp says the driver dumped that money all at once in boxes as you see here so they were able to retrieve all of it. that person eventually surrendered. officers also arrested two other drivers and say that all were involved in an illegal drug deal. did you see this? that weaving car. a 5-year-old utah boy now in hot water after he got into his family suv. he was planning on driving to

california. probably pretty obvious why troopers became suspicious yesterday. they saw the car going 30 miles an hour moving around the road erratically. they say they found the 5-year-old struggling to see over the steering wheel. he told them he was heading to california and wanted to buy a lamborghini. both parents were at work and a sibling was supposed to be watching that little boy. >> did he have the money to buy the lamborghini? 5:48. a central valley nursing home is now battling a large outbreak of the coronavirus. this is in kingston health care center in bakersfield. at least 40 people infected. more than half the staff have been infected. it's not clear if any have been hospitalized or died. they are dusting off air force one for its first trip in i think over a month. >> the president is heading to phoenix.

yeah, he's going to visit a manufacturing plant where they we don't know if the president will be wearing a mask. we do know everyone who is going to come into close contact with him during his trip will be tested ahead of time for covid-19. he said he would be open to wearing a mask but said, quote, he wasn't it was politically correct. this will be mr. trump's first trip outside of washington since he went to norfolk in february. the senate is back in session holding its first meeting yesterday. most senators wore masks but not all. the house is determined it's still too dangerous to meet. a senate committee will question john ratcliffe, nominated by president trump to be the next director of national intelligence. this is not actually the first time that he has had his name put forward. it was withdrawn earlier because many in the senate didn't figure he had the experience necessary

to be the director of national intelligence. but right now richard grinnell is. before that he was the ambassador to germany. president trump made a number of angry tweets about a new tv ad created by republicans who do not support him. called mourning in america, mourning with a u like a funeral. it's a play on president reagan's really great ad in the '80s called morning in america, more like day break. i will play president reagan's political ad first and then the ad attacking the president. >> it's morning again in america and under the of president reagan our country is prouder and stronger and better. >> there's mourning in america and under the leadership of donald trump our country is weaker and sicker and poorer.

for all that she is doing. isn't that nice? good to see. we're going to see the sun coming up. a cool start to our day, kari? >> yes, nice and cool and clear. i like these fresh starts to the day but we're going to heat up as we go into the next several days. let's enjoy this now as we take a live look outside looking over to clayton bay. we have cameras put up by cal fire and pg&e. this is one of those views as we get to see the sun rise. some low 40s in parts of the north bay, some mid-40s in the tri-valley and then low 50s for much of the inner bay so we are starting out cool and also mostly clear. enjoy some of that time outside even as it warms up today. this will not be as warm as the weather we're about to have.

at 3:00 it will be 80 degrees and there will be a westerly wind to put some of that smoke away from the grill for a little while but warm temperatures, enjoy the dinner out there on the patio. a look at our high temperatures around the bay area today, in the low 60s near the coast and some low 80s inland. as high pressure continues to become really dominant across the region and park right over the bay area, it heats up thursday and friday. there will be cool weather coming in just in time for mother's day. if you like the warm summer weather it's going to be here for a few days. as we go into wednesday, thursday, friday our temperatures still warm on saturday. some significant cooling sunday. mike, what's been happening out there for the commute? i'll take it from here,

kari. new evidence showing the coronavirus may have been in france weeks earlier than thought. doctors at a paris hospital say they've determined a patient admitted in december was infected. it confirms this shows the virus was already being spread in europe at that time. and still ahead on "today in the bay," dr. fauci down playing the white house theory on where the virus may have been created. and... let's get started. police need your help in finding 82-year-old leonard who goes by jim, last seen in the oakmont area. he was wearing a white bucket hat, jacket and jeans. officers think he may have gone to the ken wood area or to the golf course. anyone with information should call police. getting a look at the rescue of a hiker in the north bay. a chp chopper crew used night vision goggles to find the hiker stranded near table rock in napa county on sunday. the hiker still had cell phone service and was able to call 911. they used a flashlight to flag down the helicopter.

a huge fourth of july fireworks show is canceled. santa clara said it will not hold its annual celebration. more than 10,000 people show up for the party every year. the last time it was canceled was in 2008 during the mortgage meltdown. and despite the pandemic the milpitas school board swore in its newest member last week, took the oath of office in person and not virtually. he was sworn in by the city mayor practicing social distancing protocols, of course, and wearing a mask. he will serve at least through november when his seat is up for re-election. and it's 6:00 and the third hour of "today in the bay" starts right now. so we want to do this safely, do it in a way whether it's by appointment or pick up purchases already made online. >> ready to reopen. coming up next certain retail
