we're back on this tuesday morning with in-depth today. this morning kids and the coronavirus. savannah >> that's right. a new federally funded study is going to take a deeper look at how covid-19 affects children just this morning we're hearing about cases of a mysterious illness in young patients that could be coronavirus related joe fryer joins us with the details on that. joe, good morning. >> savannah, good morning. early research has shown that very few children get sick with covid-19 compared to adults. but over the past three weeks, doctors in new york city have seen a very rare yet serious syndrome in kids this morning alarming numbers out of new york regarding kids and coronavirus. city health officials issued an alert overnight that 15 children have been hospitalized with the mysterious illness possibly tied to covid-19 saying they suffered
7:39 am
from persistent fevers along with rash, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. doctors say it's a very rare, but serious, syndrome and some kids who get sick, severe inflammation affecting the heart and other organs, that can send the body into a state of shock and cause organ failure. >> this new shock syndrome is a small tip of a larger iceberg. >> reporter: 12-year-old jute juliette had severe stomach pain and was air lifted to the hospital she was diagnosed with covid-19 which doctors believe triggered cardiac arrest. >> i thought things were breaking apart really quickly and everything was terrible. >> reporter: juliette is now expected to make a full recovery >> take the pandemic seriously and make sure you continue to social distance. we almost lost her. >> reporter: these new cases making headlines as parents and leaders grapple with questions about when children should go
7:40 am
back to school by and large, kids have been largely spared from coronavirus. >> in fact, if you look at the history of what we're seeing, children do very well. >> reporter: but there have, of course, been deaths, including the 5-month-old daughter of a new york firefighter her father, calling his daughter, natalie, a warrior princess for her fighting spirit now a new study by the national institute of health hopes for the first time to give us a clearer picture of how coronavirus is impacting kids here in the u.s. >> we'd all like to know why children don't get as sick with the virus. obviously it's very fortunate that they don't, but it's fascinating they don't, because it's quite unusual for respiratory viruses to spare young children like this. >> reporter: dr. tina harder is leading the study, which will focus on 6,000 people from 2,000 american families. every two weeks kids and some of their relatives will get a nasal swab to see if they have covid-19 and if it's being passed on to others.
7:41 am
>> do they transmit infection as effectively as we see certainly in adult populations that's definitely going to contribute to us having knowledge about whether we should reopen schools, summer camps, let children visit with their grandparents >> reporter: doctors say most children with coronavirus are either asymptomatic or have very minor symptoms because of that many don't get tested, so we really don't know the infection rate among kids. this new federal study hopes to try and answer that. the study should last about six months hoda. >> all right, joe, thank you let's bring in nbc medical correspondent dr. john torres. dr. torres, one of the things when this whole thing started we were so grateful for, it was not affecting children for the most part we know a lot more now than we did back then. do you think that's still generally the case >> hoda, it does seem like children are still protected from coronavirus, but that doesn't mean they're completely safe what we don't know, because
7:42 am
children typically don't have symptoms if they do get coronavirus is how many are affected, how serious they are, what kind of outcomes they have. that's why the national institute of health is starting this big study to look and see exactly that, not just children themselves to see how it affects them, but also for communities, because children might be spreading it to other people and not even know they have it it's an important study, should be started soon and hopefully some good outcomes out of it. >> let's talk about this inflammatory syndrome joe was talking to, the 15 cases that popped up in new york. what do we know about that >> so it's 15 cases here in new york they actually met over the weekend, this large expert and find out exactly what's going on here. they came up with a working name they are calling it pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome they said today they have seen about 100 cases. this does not include the 15 here in new york city. there are other cases around that's why they are trying to get this organized to find out how many have this
7:43 am
like joe fryer said, their immune system basically goes into overdrive, they go into shock because of that, it affects their organ, in this case their heart what happened to juliet, she ended with up with cardiac arrest, luckily they were able to bring her out of that for some children not as lucky, others have serious complications. this is something they're looking at it doesn't happen very often in children and we're seeing it more and more. >> it's scary, we just talked about. but as a child if your kids have one of those symptoms, which are fever, rash, abdominal pain, red eyes, what should you do >> if they do have those symptoms, you want to go ahead and talk to the doctor, hey, i think they are having problems, should i take them to the hospital if they start having, especially, breathing problems or look like they are not making sense -- in juliette's case, her arms were cold, she had abdominal pain that was the key to take her to the hospital when they go to the hospital,
7:44 am
hey, have you heard of the pediatric syndrome it's so new, everybody might not have heard about it at this point. >> kids that want to visit their grandparents the question is, is the virus as contagious in children as it is in grownups? >> hoda, that's one of the things we simply don't know. that's why nih is launching this study. we think they are getting it at lower rates than we are, but we're not sure because a lot of them don't show symptoms but we think they're just as contagious or almost as c contagious as adults, and pass it to older adults as well that's why we're saying, for children in particular, we know you want to see your grandparents, go and play with them but for now let's keep everybody safe and stay at home. >> dr. torres, good advice, thank you. >> 7:44, seems like a good time to check on the weather. al roker standing by good to see you, sir, how are we looking? >> here is the funny thing, craig. all winter we never talked about the polar vortex we're now in spring, we're
