good morning. i am marcus washington along with laura garcia. first, meteorologist, kari hall has a look at the forecast for us. how is it looking out there today? >> going to be slightly hotter today, marcus, and we are starting out with a nice mild morning across the bay area. let's look at san jose. we have a couple hours during the morning before it gets really hot. we start out in the mid-50s, and already at 10:00 in the morning we are going to be around our normal high temperature for today, as we head into the upper 80s in the south bay and there will be some 90s in the inland east bay, and much of the north bay will be in the 90s today so it will be hotter than it was yesterday, and it gets slightly hotter for tomorrow. i will look at what is ahead as we lead into the weekend, and that's coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari.

the wildfire season begins in june or july, but because of covid concerns there's more to talk about. bob redell joins us to talk about what we can do as we shelter at home. the fire season could be starting earlier than normal, and possibly being declared within the next week or two, and for a longer time, like in november like last season. fires are already burning, like this two-alarm vegetation fire yesterday afternoon, and firefighters were able to contain it and there was no property damage or injuries, but it's one of many fires burning across the region.

and it's still spreading. doctors as ucsf say it's important to reopen carefully, and the worries of progress made by sheltering at home could be replaced by a surging of patients. >> reduce restrictions, and the unintended consequence, which is the boomerang part, and you get the second surge. >> and the doctor expect counties will adjust to health orders as conditions change, scaling back reopening allowing businesses to try again when the spread slows. we will bring you the governor's news conference today at noon and stream it on nbcbayarea.com. and the city's health officer adds anybody that has a health care provider should call

them before visiting the site. the city is also expanding its criteria for free testing. and the county is offering anybody free screenings that lives or works there. on the website, covid19.ca.gov. just type in your zip code and it narrows the choices near your home. and mayor breed says the city is now cleaning tenderloin streets of homeless people that continue to gather there. that suit cites the coronavirus and safety concerns. and this tweet is raising eyebrows everywhere. some experts argue it keeps

potentially infected people from wondering the streets, costs, a calling them enablers. and then there's an aim to get more money for schools, and the schools and community first initiative says closing corporate tax loopholes could generate $12 billion in savings. it comes as schools in san francisco outline a plan to balance the deficit, that could reach million this school year. according to "the examiner," they include department cuts and

good thursday morning. right now at 4:40 as we take a look at our current temperatures, and how we begin the day, most of us in the 40s but we have upper 50s in parts of the east bay. we will track a warm-up today. more on that in the forecast coming up. good morning. here's today's top business headlines. wall street looks to open higher. dow futures are up about 260 points, as are the number of people filing for unemployment. the total over the last six

weeks is at about 33 million. economists expect to see the unemployment rate rocket to 16%. the dow falling more than 200 points as investors pored over data. frontier airlines is dropping plans to charge more for the middle seat. it would have charged passengers almost $39 per drop. air travel has dropped. movie theaters are closed but some drive-ins are seeing a surge in popularity in the wake of social distancing guidelines.

>> we will have a nice move of the super moon getting to rise in the next hour and since we are all up we will watch it together. this is the fourth and last super moon of 2020 so we will have a moon that appears 14% larger and about 30% brighter, so as that super moon rises at 5:35, we will see the really cool light in the sky. let's talk to the heat. we will be close to record-high temperatures in santa rosa. the forecast is 91 degrees, and the record is 94, and all of these high temperatures in a lot of the spots around the bay area, it has been years since we have had weather this hot this early in the season. livermore, 91, but the record is 101 degrees. i don't think we will set a record but we will be close and even warmer tomorrow.

as we look at what to do in this heat, of course you want to make sure you drink plenty of water and if you are working you are taking lots of breaks. keep a cool towel on your neck, and that helps to cool you in the heat. we warn people about the danger of cars, as it can be 30 to 50 degrees hotter in a car so never leave your children or pets in the vehicle, and make sure you check that backseat twice and the pets outside are taken care of or don't leave them outside in this kind of heat. hotter tomorrow. starts to feel better on saturday and sunday, just in time for mother's day. we get a nice refreshing breeze and possibly refreshing rain as we go into the beginning of next week. we will be watching out for that. mike, what is happening out on

the roads? >> we had mostly scheduled work and that's tkpgood news. you see green all over the bay, and lighter traffic continues to be the case with essential workers getting out and doing their jobs. in san francisco, two areas circled. yesterday we had a lot of construction, but today no closures, but watch some just off the allegheny bridge. i will point out northbound 101 coming across the bridge, we have seen a little traffic is showing up. we will just watch the span, but folks are able to get across but allow extra time getting across to sausalito. it's 4:48 right now.

we have new details in the deadly south bay shooting we were telling you about. the police say 48-year-old robert rivera was found dead monday morning in the backyard of a home and this is near the los altos country club. two san francisco leaders are pushing back against a vote to close the jail inside the hall of justice. city supervisor stefani is the lone dissenting vote. the call to close the jail grew once the coronavirus started thinning the inmate population. the california supreme court is challenging a motion that state funding to help undocumented immigrants affected by the virus. last month governor newsom

approved $75 million for immigrants that did not receive federal funding, and he was sued. the court rejected the lawsuit without explanation. starting on monday you will have to wear a face covering at l.a.x., and the new requirement was just announced by eric gal. mayor. all bay area airports now have similar requirements. newport beach is the latest orange county city to receive state approval to reopen its beaches. leaders there have agreed to open the beaches only for active recreational use, so no sunbathing. happening today, caltrans is hosting small business webinars trying to keep businesses afloat. they will cover topics like getting state certification
