the father and son accused of chasing and gunning down an unarmed black man arrested and charged with murder. this is one of the most heinous crimes i think we've seen in this generation. >> this morning the video that sparked nationwide outrage and a turning point in the case. what the suspects are saying to police. close to home. one of president trump's personal valets, who works inside the west wing, tests positive for covid-19. the president's reaction and the new safety measures being put in place at the white house. we do have a very busy day and a lot to get to, including that breaking news in georgia. the overnight arrest from a father and son accused of murdering a black man who was jogging in their neighborhood. we will have a live report just ahead, savannah. >> we will. but we're going to start with the nation bracing for this morning's new jobs report. it is expected to be a stunner. record unemployment because of the coronavirus. tens of millions of americans out of work and in desperate need of help this morning. tom costello begins our coverage. tom, good morning. >> good morning, savannah. these are breathtaking numbers showing the greatest increase in unemployment in 20 years. nearly 20 million americans out of work in april alone, double what the country saw in the 2007 to 2009 economic crisis. it is the biggest, most dramatic jump since the great depression. the labor department reporting april unemployment rate jumped to 14.7%, with 20.5 million people losing their jobs. the president reacting this morning. >> as president, we had the strongest economy in the history of the world, the strongest economy we've ever had, and we had to close it, which is artificial.

we artificially closed it. >> reporter: jobless numbers more dramatic since the unemployment rate in february was 3.5%. the economic mess forcing some across the country to seek help from local food banks the first time in their lives. myra is a server in atlantic city. part of leisure and hospitality. >> i am ready to go back, i need money. but i want to do it in a safe environment. >> reporter: the pandemic taking a toll on trade, transition, as well as construction. also feeling the pain, retailers from small businesses to big box stores. nieman marcus did. as well as others. seattle-based store and jcpenney with lord & taylor planning to

revamp inventory. president trump says he's looking for a bounceback later this year rainfall i'm viewing the third quarter as a very important quarter. as i said, that will be a transition. i think you can almost say a transition into greatness. next year will be a phenomenal year. >> experts promise getting back to where we were isn't like flipping a switch. the federal reserve bank telling savannah reopening will be a slow process and the unemployment rate won't tell the full story. i think the number tomorrow will probably be something like 16 or 17%. i think the real number is probably around 23 or 24%. it's devastating. >> reporter: that's the head of the federal reserve in minneapolis speaking yesterday, echoing what many people believe is true. the real unemployment rate in this country is probably closer to 23, 25%. to put it in perspective, the country has now lost more jobs, all the jobs we recreated and gained since the great recession, we have lost those jobs in over a decade.

a couple months ago we were talking record unemployment, low unemployment in this country. now we are at record highs. the question is which parts of the country come back and which will be vulnerable. which industries struggle to regain footing. savannah? >> those are the questions we want to pose. turn to one expert, our colleague over at cnbc, the host of squawk box and "new york times" columnist. andrew, there aren't enough words in the dictionary to express how bad this is expected to be, a real gut punch in terms of the jobs report. tell us why that doesn't capture the picture. >> thank you. we talk about the statistic. every statistic has a name and family behind it. one of the reason it doesn't count it, there are a lot of people not seeking a job, they won't be counted. the number the labor department said today, the number is likely

to be 5% higher. we're talking 19, 20% in reality. >> one of the things we talked about, you were looking to see if losses were confined to sectors we expect, entertainment, travel, retail, or whether there was contagion, in other words that it spread beyond. what did you find? >> for the most part confined to the areas you would imagine. that's a good sign. the other thing, if you call it a good sign, nearly 80% of jobs, workers no longer working believe it is temporary, believe they have been furloughed. that's what they think. it suggests if they get back to work, we could have a faster recovery. one other thing to mention, the inequality of this. when you look through the

numbers, unemployment rate for people that don't have a high school diploma is 22%. that's against people that have a college diploma, which is only 8.4%. it shows the schism in this country of what's happening. >> how do people make sense of this and seeing wall street rally. >> wall street is looking 12 months out from now, not looking at today. you'll see the stock market, people are hopeful, hoping 12 months from now, the world looks a lot better. and that disconnect is hard to stomach of course. >> andrew ross sorkin, thank you very much. hoda, send it to you. a breaking story overnight where a man accused of chasing and killing a black man. blayne alexander joins us with

this story. hey, blayne, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you. a former law enforcement officer and his son travis face charges of murder and aggravated assault. it comes after days of protest not just in georgia but around the country. the director of georgia bureau of investigations tells me the video was a key piece leading to those arrests. >> reporter: this morning, a father and son behind bars. they are charged with murder and aggravated assault in the death of a 25-year-old. overnight, his family says it has been a long wait. release, our family, that we know they are behind bars but we still have a long process to go.

>> the shooting happened in february but the release this week of this video showing the altercation quickly sparked a national outcry. >> if we can get involved when there's an active crime scene, that's better for people. >> celebrities including lebron james, serena williams and taylor swift demand justice, president trump expressed confidence. >> i'm sure they'll come up with what happened, it is a sad, very sad thing. >> reporter: the two men armed are seen following arbery running down the street. they confront arbery and after a scuffle he's eventually shot dead. nbc can't verify what happened before and after this video. arbery's family said he was unarmed and just out for a job. -- a jog. >> what justice looks like is these men behind bars for the rest of their lives, a public lynching.

>> they believe he was the man involved in recent home burglaries. this 911 call by an unknown caller was recorded shortly before arbery was killed. >> someone breaking in right now. >> no. it's open, under construction. he's running right now. there he goes right now. >> according to a police report, gregory mcmichael, a former police officer, claims arbery began to violently attack travis, and the two men then started fighting over the shotgun. mcmichael says his son shot arbery in self-defense. the case is now on its third prosecutor. the previous two recused themselves over possible conflicts of interest. now ten weeks later an arrest. but those demanding justice say this is just the first step. today supporters have organized a virtual run using the #i run with ahmaud. they urge everyone to run or walk 2.3 miles to represent the day arbery was killed. >> thank you. in the meantime the coronavirus outbreak has now hit very close

to home for the president. the white house is now going to ramp up testing around him after a member of the military who serves as a personal valet to the president tested positive for the virus. nbc's peter alexander joins us from the white house peter, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, you're right. that coronavirus scare is hitting very close to home for president trump. the man testing positive is a military valet, whose duties bring him to the oval office they are raising new questions th about whether enough is being >> reporter: the coronavirus hitting the west wing with his personal valet testing positive. >> it is a little strange. one of those things. >> reporter: the valet, a member of the navy, served the president lunch and diet cokes and other duties. >> i have very little contact with this gentleman. know who he is, good person. i've had very little contact, mike has had very little

contact. >> reporter: a person saying the president was lava level mad when he learned the news saying he does not believe they are doing all they can to protect him. a source with knowledge of the situation calling it an operational failure. president trump says he and vice president pence both tested negative on back-to-back days wednesday and thursday, insistin the white house is now tightening its protocol. >> testing is not a perfect art. no matter what you do, testing is not a perfect art so we test once a week, now we're going to go to testing once a day. >> while the white house begins daily testing, the supply of those same tests nationwide remains far below what experts say is needed to reopen the country. earlier this week white house press secretary kayleigh mcenany dismissed the idea of everyone of tests for everyon returning to work. >> if we tested every single american in the country at this moment, we have to retest them an hour later and an hour later

after that at any moment you could theoretically contract the virus. the notion everyone needs to be tested is simply nonsensical. >> president trump said to me yesterday his valets wear masks. he said a lot of people in the white house wear masks but covering this place over the last several weeks, i've almost never seep any official or any member of the white house wear masks inside the west wing savannah. >> all right, peter, thank you another big headline this morning, the criminal case against michael flynn, the former national security adviser, has been dropped. what can you tell us about that. >> this is an important development we just saw happen here the justice department has now moved to drop its case against flynn who pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi about his contact with russia's ambassador to the u.s., fired by the president. afte a review concluded flynn should never have been charged in the

first place, arguing his statements were not material, not central to any investigation the fbi was conducting the president, who has been considering a pardon for flynn, he welcomed the news, praising flynn as a great warrior all of this is stunning reversal by the doj, igniting with officials that attorney general barr and the justice department are bowing to political pressure savannah. >> all right peter alexander with the relentless from the white house. peter, thank you 7:15 hoda, back to you. >> savannah, we have a lot to get to this morning, including the first on camera interview with the woman who accused joe biden of sexual assault. nbc washington correspondent andrea mitchell has more on the claims she's making. hey, andrea, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. tara reade's comments are her first on camera response to joe biden's strong denial of her assault allegation just a week ago with mika brzezinski on msnbc. as the biden campaign points out inconsistencies in reade's

account over the year. she thinks biden should exit the presidential race. doesn't think that will happen a warning to some of our viewers, some of the language is graphic. in her response to biden's denial tara reade emotionally deciding what she said happened in the spring of 1993, describing being asked to bring then senator joe biden a gym bag in his senate office building. >> he greeted me he remembered my name. i said, here you go, senator i handed him the bag it happened very quickly. >> she alleges biden pushed her up against the wall in the and hands under her clothes. >> he had his hands underneath senate corridor and put his hands under my clothes. >> he had his hands underneath my clothes it happened all at once. he had one hand underneath my shirt and the other hand, i had a skirt on, and he went down my skirt and then up. >> reade claiming he pulled back

when she resisted. >> he pointed his finger at me and said you're nothing to me. you're nothing i think that's the hardest thing. >> biden has consistently denied these claims, repeating his denial thursday when asked about her new comments. >> in every case the truth is what matters in this case the truth is these claims are flat out false. >> a year ago reade was among several women who said biden had touched them inappropriately in a nonsexual manner biden later vowing to be more respectful of people's personal space. in march, for the first time publicly, reade came forward with her assault claim she also said she had filed a complaint with the senate that did not mention assault. no complaint has been filed. the biden campaign issuing a statement thursday saying every day more and more inconsistencies arise. women must receive the benefit

of the doubt they must be able to come forward and share their stories without fear of retribution or harm, and we all have a responsibility to ensure that. at the same time, we can never sacrifice the truth. asked if she would take a polygraph, tara reade said victims of violence should not have to and she's not a criminal but she would take one if biden did. only portions of reade's conversation with megyn kelly were posted online so far. biden says no one recalls hearing about such an incident the lawyers who vetted biden for vice president said they found no misconduct of any kind. >> all right andrea mitchell for us in washington, d.c. andrea, thank you. let us switch gears now. time to get a check of the weather, including, yup, the story we've been talking about all week, the polar vortex for mother's day weekend what a gift, al.

>> it's the gift that keeps giving, guys ahead of that we've got severe weather going on right now part of the same system that's eventually going to be affecting the northeast. strong storms, severe thunderstorm watches and warnings down through texas, louisiana, on into arkansas. meantime, 102 million people under some sort of frost advisories, freeze watch or freeze warning into sunday morning. that arctic air will be pushing to the south from that polar vortex record lows challenged windchills anywhere from the upper 20s to low 20s to upper teens. into that will come this low pressure system racing eastward. rain and wet snow moves into the northeast. back on the back side of that system we'll be looking at snow developing through central new york into upstate new england. that will continue to bring windy conditions tomorrow into saturday and sunday, and we look for a hit or miss scattered showers and snow flurries. wind gusts anywhere from 40 to 50 miles per hour through the northeast and northern new

worst number since the second world war and the great depression before it. stock market actually up this morning as investors anticipated that number and hoped for better days ahead. >> reporter: i'm bob redell in free month. tesla says it will resume limited factory operations in fremont after the state lifted covid-19 restrictions for manufacturing. however, by reopening, tesla could be in violation of alameda county's shelter in place order which is still in effect. the sheriff's office tells reuters that the state order announced yesterday does not supersede the county order. in an email obtained by cnbc tesla told employees only about 30% of the workforce will return on a given shift. cnbc points out it's not clear how tesla can build vehicles with that reduced head count. >> reporter: counties around the bay area are having different coronavirus experiences, and that's why the restrictions are a little different by county. in napa, sonoma and solano

number of cases in the u.s. has climbed to nearly 1.3 million. the number of deaths now approaches 77,000 people. >> frontier airlines will implement mandatory temperature checks on passengers prior to boarding it's the first u.s. airline to announce such a measure. those checks will start june 1st. starting monday amtrak will require passengers to wear face coverings on trains and stations ride share announced its passengers and drivers will also be required to wear masks. we'll have more on all that in our next half hour. >> right now, more of our ongoing series on solutions. savannah, you spoke exclusively to melinda gates. >> that's right. for more than 20 years, she and her husband have dedicated their lives and money to global health fighting infectious diseases through the bill and melinda gates she's traveled the world working on vaccines force

diseases like malaria. and tube tuberculosis m now they are laser focused on coronavirus. they have committed more than $3 million to find a vaccine. i spoke to her about where that stands a mainly weakness in the economy she believes we have a chance to she believes we have a chance to address right now. >> as you survey the scene of where we are right now in this pandemic, do you feel confident about our trajectory do you feel like there's a plan? >> i feel like we still are at the beginning stages of this pandemic, we've seen the first part of it to reopen we need to do far more testing and tracing, and we need to be very careful and go very slowly as we reopen. you should never be reopening in places where you've got accelerating disease. >> let's talk about the search for a vaccine, the gates foundation, you and your husband, bill gates, are very much in the forefront. you put your money where your mouth is trying to find a vaccine. what's the status of that right

now? >> well, i think just as you're hearing from everybody else, it's about 12 to 18 months we get information pretty much on a daily basis about the various vaccine candidates that are moving through that pipeline luckily it's looking like there are a few good candidates. to be frank, that's a relief >> there was a report that the administration has a initiative operation warp speed and the goal is quite ambitious, to have hundreds of millions of vaccine doses as early as january. i asked dr. fauci is that even in the realm of the possible, he said it was. so it may be possible. do you think it's likely, knowing what you know about the search for a vaccine >> you know, boy, that would be lucky to have hundreds of millions of doses by january i'm not sure how likely that is. these things take time, because.

i'm hopeful. but when i say it's likely, might hesitate a bit on that one. >> this p we have to know they are safe. i'm hopeful. but when i say it's likely, might hesitate a bit on that one. >> this pandemic has certainly exposed weaknesses and strengths. you're focusing on one of the weaknesses that's been exposed here, and that's how we take care of our caregivers why did you decide to take on this issue >> if we're going to look at reopening our economy, we have to take care of our most essential workers. 85% of nurses are women, and yet who is the primary caregiver at home women. who is the primary one for educating the kids women. >> what are the ramifications of that for society if the burden is falling so disproportionately on women. >> when care giving falls to women, what happens is they then can't go do their jobs in society. they start to lose income. their families start to lose income we have to look at what are solutions.

there are policy, business solutions that can help. >> what's the number one policy that congress could enact to alleviate this burden on caregivers. >> they need to start looking at a paid family medical leave policy we are the only -- the only industrialized nation in the world that does not have paid family medical leave, and that needs to change. >> when resources are already so strained, it's quite ambitious to say now is the time we need more paid leave. how do you get people to want to act on this now at a time when frankly they feel nervous about this >> i think we've always had this false narrative of this is expensive so we're not going to do it. this is already costing us it is costing us our health.

you have to address this piece if you want to have health care fundamental to actually reopening the economy. >> you made no secret to your disagreement with the white house a workers, nurses out there, will >> you made no secret of funding for th world health organization. do you find any fault with how the world health organization has conducted itself in the pandemic, particularly in the beginning stages >> it's not a perfect institution. no institution is perfect. i think there will be time to go back and do a postmortem when we come out of this crisis. but i don't believe with my institution you do a postmortem while you're in the crisis. >> your husband famously warned about a pandemic back in 2015. he said then we weren't prepared even so, are you surprised at how the u.s. has responded are you surprised we weren't better prepared? >> i'm both surprised we weren't

better prepared. but quite honestly, i'm surprised we wasted so much time, that we haven't had leadership at the national level to get out tests in the right way, protective gear in the right way, contact tracing in the right way. with lack of leadership, there are 50 home grown state solutions. that just shouldn't be germany with national leadership, they were able to keep certain sectors of the economy open safely, keep people safe, mostly social distancing, and now start to slowly reopen based on the science that's the kind of leadership we should expect as citizens in this country and we're not getting it we haven't gotten it yet during this crisis, so you're seeing what's happening, and it's chaos. >> that's pretty blunt do you lay the blame at the feet of the trump administration?

>> i'm disappointed in what i'm seeing, yes. >> what gives you hope right now? >> i get amazing hope and inspiration from the frontline health care workers who are going in and doing their jobs every day in very difficult circumstances. then i get massive hope talking to the scientists and the many partners from industry when i see people coming together in collaboration to do the right thing, to share the science, to share what we do know and learn, that's the best of humanity, and it makes me hopeful and makes me know we are going to get out of this pandemic >> it's really interesting to hear her talk about some of the vaccine candidates that nobody wants to put the cart before the horse but saying there are a few that look very promising so it's very hopeful, because they are watching all these different trials that are happening. they are funding a lot of it so they really know what's happening with the search for a vaccine. >> she sounded cautiously optimistic i thoroughly enjoyed hearing

what she had to say on paid family medical leave and you either pay for it on the front end or the back end as well. >> she's definitely fired up, a big advocate a lot of people are talking about that sheryl sandberg from facebook just wrote something on the same topic. care giving and how we care for our caregivers, really relevant issue, more relevant than ever, when we see so many people having to take care of seniors, also taking care of their kids and having to do their jobs as well. >> good conversation you'd be hard pressed to find anyone putting more money where their mouth is than the gates foundation more news, nfl releasing that schedule for the 2020 season hoda kotb, big news coming out of that because drew brees, your guy taking on tom brady. >> that guy. >> we've got all the details and mike tirico. what the games could actually look like. that's right after this.

forecasts were, but most experts believe the real number is higher. we could have 20% unemployment or even worse. the numbers are staggering. as you know, many americans are turning to food banks to feed their families. most economists believe the recovery process will be a very slow one. meanwhile by the weekend, more than 40 states will now start to ease off on the stay-at-home restrictions. all of them taking their own pace but it's going to be a long process as well. california is now allowing clothing stores and florists to reopen just in time for mother's day but curbside pickup only. in new york where the death toll has topped 20,000, we can tell you there's no sign yet the restrictions will be eased. covid-19 cases also now surging in several midwestern states. those now are starting to reopen as well. a military aide to president trump has tested positive for covid-19. he's a navy valet with access to the oval office. he actually served the president lunch.

the attorney for the arbery family overnight he told me that video was absolutely essential and leading to these arrests he believes today we plan to learn more about the overnight arrests. gregory mcmichael, former law enforcement officer and his son travis arrested overnight over the shooting of ahmaud arbery. the shooting happened in february but it was the video released this week that sparked nationwide outrage and showed the events leading up to that shooting mcmichael said in the police report they were following arbery because they believed he was a burglary suspect arbery's family said he was unarmed and out for a sunday afternoon jog. later today we see a virtual run in georgia and around the country in arbery's honor along with a number of protest for what would have been his

opportunity to unwind, to kiss a dog, get a dog's kiss in return. >> reporter: you're going to make me cry. >> i know. i'm trying not to. >> reporter: as a stress buster, it seems to be working >> the dogs understand they feel how i'm feeling, and they want me to feel better. >> reporter: the dogs are part of the not for profit puppies behind bars. we visited them last year. puppies raised to be service dogs for first responders and veterans the trainers, inmates at maximum security prisons like this one north of new york city before they graduate, they know nearly 100 commands.

something special to wrap up national nurses week, savannah. >> yeah, we have a good story. nursing is a family affair for a group we're about to introduce you to three nurses that followed their mom into the career they all loved. this year as they fight on the front lines, mother's day is taking on added meaning. early on rosemary whitman knew her calling. >> my grandmother had been very sick and i helped care for her with my mom. so that's probably my major reason for choosing nursing. >> and for the past nearly 37 years, she's been caring for patients at boston's brigham young hospital. >> nursing is truly a profession that you absolutely have to have your heart in it 100%. >> today she's the matriarch of the family on the front lines fighting covid-19 pandemic, bringing daughters christina and katie and even son-in-law brad to work in the family business all four at the same boston

hospital. >> i decided to be a nurse because my role model and inspiration in life was a nurse, so i just wanted to follow in her footsteps. i think i also kind of had a nurturing tendency i have been on the same floor for 13 years now, and i still love work every day. >> brad joins them after a career change. >> she put the bug in my ear to be a nurse if she didn't kind of encourage me, i don't know where i would be. >> rosemary would often work nights and weekends so she could be home with her family. >> she was always there. when we got home from school, you did your homework, watched tv, and we all had dinner together as a family we used to think moms worked weekends and dads worked weekdays because mom worked weekends we thought that was normal growing up.

counties, all will remain in phase one of the shelter at home order. that's not stopping a tesla plant from reopening. cnbc learned it may reopen as early as today but only with 30% of the staff on site. it's not clear if alameda county authorities will try to intervene, although the sheriff's office told reuters the governor's office should supersede county restrictions. bob will have a live report for us during our midday news cast. you can also get more details at the top of our home page. the nordstrom store in pleasanton stonebridge mall will not reopen when the mall gets back to business. the store is among 16 locations being closed across the nation. this as the company tightens its belt due to financial losses from the coronavirus. we're all doing our part by staying at home.
