i'm just glad that we're moving forward and less people are getting ill and dying, definitely, and we want to continue to be safe. right now at 4:30, main streets across the south bay gearing up for a big day. santa clara county the largest in the bay area finally entering phase two of the reopening plan. a live report next on excitement and concerns. the opening coming as we head into a long memorial day weekend. that means crowds. what parks and beaches are doing to keep things safe. and a happy friday to you. i love the sound of that, don't you? friday.

i'm marcus washington. >> say it one more time. >> friday. >> i'm friday garcia. all right, we'll make it through this day. it's been a long workweek for a lot of people. kari hall, when will we start seeing that warm-up? yeah, that's going to happen this weekend. hopefully it's a long weekend as well since it's been a long week. let's get a look at our temperature trend for san jose, starting out at 53 degrees. as we go through the day it's going to be a nice one with our high temperatures reaching into the upper 70s. but we do see 80s and even 90s in the forecast. i'll have more on that in a few minutes. looking here to the maps showing a smooth flow of traffic. we'll get you out where i've circled the bottom of the screen. 101 had the scheduled closure. a glimpse showed traffic flowing. we're going to say use caution

as you approach and you should be all right for 101. i do believe traffic has been restored. as we look at the rest of the bay, a smooth flow of traffic. we don't expect a high volume but still we'll watch for things that are a little unusual today. back to you. thanks so much, mike. to breaking news. more than 100 people have died after a passenger plane crashed in pakistan. officials telling us the pakistan airlines flight left the karachi international airport in the southern part of that country. and we have new video just in of the crash. officials say the flight was carrying 99 passengers and eight crew members. witnesses tell the associated press the plane appeared to attempt to land two or three times before eventually crashing into a residential area. no word yet on casualties on the ground so far. we will continue to follow this breaking news story and bring you updates as we get them. well, it's opening day for santa clara county, at least it

feels that way for retailers who are now getting to offer customers curbside delivery. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in campbell with what we can expect from the south bay. exciting news, kris. >> reporter: yeah, marcus. the signs are up, open now, curbside delivery, we've missed you, all up and down downtown campbell. retailers are definitely ready for what they hope will be an influx of customers. the owner of one store chain is launching curbside pick yum for online sales and face time shopping trips at this campbell location, santa clara county. with stores in different counties which all entered phase two at different times, it has been a challenge. in san jose a boutique owner says the shelter order forced them to be creative and fast. >> it definitely pushed us to do online sooner, which we did. there are a lot of vendors

closed, and some are coming back right now. we can't even really buy or get our merchandise we ordered. our store is not the store we planned to have for spring, but we are getting more things in and have things online. >> reporter: so even with the online sales right now overall sales down 86%. she says she's keeping her business afloat through the federal paycheck protection loan. she is opening business will start to pick up again soon. mendocino and san joaquin counties, our neighbors, they will be entering deeper into phase two today because of those modified requirements set out by the governor. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> hope they can recoup some of that loss. solano county is just hours away from its dine-in/dine-out at restaurants. it was given the approval to

move into the second stage of governor newsom's recovery. last night we saw some restaurants on first street in benicia scrambling to get things ready. one bar owner opened a day early. >> my plan really follows the same plan we opened with in 2012. restaurants should obviously constantly wash their hands, sanitize everything. we don't do open air sneezing ever. so just be responsible. >> they are awaiting approval to open restaurants, retail business and venues that are considered safe. martinez is holding off ton a plan to reopen closed off traffic on main street. the city council approved the plan this week to allow businesses to expand outdoors, and now they say they want to wait until contra costa county

allows more stores and restaurants to reopen. they approved their own expansion program. a big chunk of the regional park remains closed. san leandro police is reminding everyone the parking lot at chabot park will be closed as well. and the city's marina park will be closed. you can still walk. restrictions around lake merritt in oakland. food trucks will not be allowed and parking lots will be closed to limit the overcrowding. berkeley is reporting a second patient at the elmwood care facility has tested positive for the virus. the first known cases at the berkeley senior facility there. at the same time contra costa county prosecutors are stilling an orinda nursing home where at least four people have died.

at least 50 other people at the orinda care center have been infected. it's not clear if charges will be filed there. the number of icu cases in the bay area related to covid-19 dropping. as of wednesday there were over 104 cases, the lowest since april 1st. there are now more than 11,000 total infections in the bay area. 416 people have died. today and tomorrow a free testing clinic for anyone who needs it in east palo alto at the ymca on bell street until 4:00 p.m. each day. drive-up and walk-up testing is available. activists plan to protest four-wheel style for people just trying to make it in the bay. a group advocating withholding rent wants to send a message to congress, cancel rent and mortgage payments today and plan

to actually caravan through oakland. now something a little bittersweet. the decades old company specialty's cafe and bakery closed its doors this week due to the coronavirus, but the cafe said good-bye in a big way by giving customers boxes of frozen cookie dough and its warehouse yesterday. the cars lined up to get hold of those famous flavors like white chocolate macadamia nut, my favorite, and peanut butter chocolate. specialty's says that in just one hour they sold more than 400 cases of that cookie dough. >> wow. why didn't you tell me about that yesterday? >> i know. that's my favorite, those cookies. 4:38 this morning. smoke and flames. still ahead we'll tell you about the overnight fire that ripped through a strip mall. and look at the damage done right there.

up. good morning. i'm rahel solomon at cnbc headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street looks set to open in the red. dow futures down about 100 points following modest losses yesterday and declines in asia overnight. that's as china scraps a growth target amid the virus pandemic and rising tensioning between beijing and the u.s. several big tech names such as amazon came under pressure. investors reacting to that dismal news on unemployment. and the dow, nasdaq and s&p 500 are all on pace for solid gains. mark zuckerberg says it may not be long before working remotely is the standard for many facebook employees. he says 50% of the company could be working from home on a permanent basis the next five to ten years, accelerated by the virus pandemic. facebook said nearly all employees will continue to work from home until the end of the year.

with cool temperatures and it's going to be a really nice day. here is a live look outside in san jose. we can see what's going on here and we're once again starting out with a clear sky. expect temperatures in san francisco in the lower 50s. we're going to continue to see that sun shining as we go into today and it slowly warms up. a little bit cooler there as well as along the coastline and we're also going to see some of our inland areas a little bit warm today for our afternoon high temperatures reaching into the upper 70s and low 80s, but still very nice. make time to get outside and enjoy it today with a breezy wind, it's going to feel even more comfortable for the south bay, up to 78. 78 in livermore. in the north bay we're up to 79 in napa. san francisco will reach 66 thr forecast we've been talking about some hot weather coming our way for the holiday weekend. we are going to see high

pressure building and intense heat across parts of the region starting to move into the bay area. we look at our temperatures that will start out in the low 80s. then we see it quickly going up. from the low 80s to the mid-80s, even some upper 80s as we go into the end of the weekend but then look at next week memorial day we're going to see highs in the 90s. and for san francisco not as much of a warm-up. we're won't see the heat along the coastline. we'll stay in the 70s for early next week. a lot of changes temperature wise but still no rain. mike, you've been watching the roads. what's going on out there? kari, i was concerned about the south bay coming into cupertino. i'm going to circle this here for you. i saw some flowing there. there must be some equipment moving around. no closure listed. it will clear in a few minutes

but we have had that construction in both directions over the course of the late morning over earlier this week. now we do have this over here in first of all we're looking at the slower drive at the 101 alemany project. the freeway itself is open. we still have a closure for the pavement repair work at the mcarthur tunnel just on the south end coming off into city streets. we're heading to the golden gate bridge and that will go possibly until 7:00. back to you. all right, thank you very much, mike. new overnight south bay firefighters working to save a strip mall from a fire. you can see some of those flames leaping med on the el camino re, firefighters say it started with a vegetation fire and spread. >> releasing details in the city. they say they received a call

around 6:30 about gunshots fired near newell avenue. a short time later two shooting victims were dropped off in a nearby hospital. we don't know their conditions and there are no words of any arrests. when it comes to police presence san francisco supervisor matt haney is pushing for more boots on the ground. three days ago he proposed a fall ballot measure to create neighborhood safety units. the majority of supervisors will have to approve it to make it on to the november ballot. haney plans to talk more about that measure today during a virtual news conference. now to a follow-up on the deadly scuba boat fire in southern california. the conception boat went down last september killing 34 people off the coast of santa barbara. the coroner's report says they all died of carbon monoxide poisoning. the only survivors were the

captain and four crew members. many of the victims were from the bay area. actress lori loughlin and her husband are expected to plead guilty to conspiracy charges in the college admissions scandal. according to the u.s. attorney's office loflin and mossimo giannulli agreed to plead guilty to wire fraud. they are accused of paying half a million dollars to get their daughters into usc. loflin will be hypbehind bars t months, her husband five months. they will have to pay hefty fines and do community service. in decision 2020 a short list is emerging for joe biden's possible running mate. they include congresswoman demings from orlando. nbc news is confirming demings is undergoing a vetting pro is he is. you may remember her as the house manager from the impeachment hearings. others on the list former presidential candidate senator kamala harris and amy klobuchar.

welcome back, everyone. nbc bay area responds to several parents who had trouble with tour companies that specialized in student trips. >> the families felt they were taken for a ride. so we turned to consumer investigator chris chmura who is here with some important developments. >> reporter: good morning. anna in berkeley, marybelle asked our team for help with ef tours. that company canceled their kids' trips due to the pandemic and offered a credit, not cash back. in anna's case the company held $4,000 for a trip to spain and morocco in march that didn't happen. our response teams around the country are also fielding complaints from upset ef tours customers. here's the good news, an ef tour spokesperson told us yesterday that a nationwide settlement will be announced today.
