we are we are back, 8:38 now. some exciting news for fans who are hungry for sports. on tuesday the national hockey league became the first professional sports league in north america to announce an official format to return to play we're going to unpack the specific details with commissioner gary bettman in just a moment. but first, how the rest of the hockey season could play out since march 12th, the national hockey league has been dark, a full stop due to the coronavirus pandemic but a new plan could have players back on the ice this summer.
7:56 am
>> i am delighted to be with you today to announce the national hockey league's plan for our resumption of play. >> in a press conference tuesday commissioner bettman announced the league's plan to return to play for the postseason. 24 of the league's teams will soon head to the playoff to compete for the stanley cup. the news celebrated online by hockey and sports fans alike it's not clear if any fans will be able to attend in person with new precautions in place because of the coronavirus all games will be played in two yet to be determined hub cities. one for the eastern conference teams and one for the western. these hubs will have to secure hotels, arenas, practice facilities and transportation for players and teams will be required to limit personnel and suppt orafstf.
7:57 am
>> while nothing is without risk, ensuring health and safety has been central to all of our planning so far and will remain so >> without committing to a specific date, the commissioner laid out a possible time line beginning as early as june and based on guidance from medical professionals and government authorities. >> i know i join sports fans everywhere when i say we cannot wait for our players to hit the ice again. >> and nhl commissioner gary bettman joins us live now. gary, a lot of those fans are celebrating this morning, not even just fans of hockey but sports fans in general here is the thing. it sounds like it's more of a framework than really a list of dates to circle on a calendar. when do you think the first puck will drop, gary? >> it will be at some point over the summer by the way, good morning, and it's great to be with you. the framework is intended to be evolutionary we're going to take things one step at a time because of the health and safety of our players and all of our personnel and all of our communities is of
7:58 am
paramount importance we've been in a self-isolation stage. early june we're going to have our training facilities open because our players haven't been able to work out or skate, so they want to get back in shape when we get the sense they are ready and get the sense how long they need for training camp, we'll move to the training camp phase probably in july once we're done with training camp, we're going to execute the plan you just described so well in two hub cities we don't want to be pinned down to specific dates because as everybody knows, things are changing almost daily. >> you did say yesterday that an essential component of this plan is going to be what you describe as rigorous testing. tell us a little bit more about this testing and howft that's going to happen the medical people tell us that the safest way for us to do what we're planning to do test be personnel, particularly
7:59 am
the players, if not daily at least every other day for the scope of the tournament we're talking about probably between 25 and 30,000 tests, putting aside the expense. we also understand we can't be doing the testing if it's going to interfere at all with any medical needs of any community we might be considering going to although the medical people are telling us by the summer testing should be in such abundance that 25 to 30,000 tests, while it sounds like a big number will be infinitesimal. >> will you have to shut down if one person is sick. >> not one person but obviously if there's an outbreak that will shut things down, although we're not going to make that decision. the medical people will tell us what to do under the circumstances.
8:00 am
as i think everybody knows, there's a lot of uncertainty but we believe that having framework and timetable that we can adjust, it's another step in the return to some degree of normalcy and we think that's really important because sports has always been a catalyst for bringing people together and helping communities heal. >> and providing a much needed escape during these times especially gary, one more question. there's so many of your players, hundreds of players in nhl, they come from overseas, canada, russia, finland, sweden. of course sweden never enacted the kind of lockdown that we've seen in our country. what are you going to do about these hundreds of players who
8:01 am
are returning from other countries. >> we have about 44%, roughly, of our players are in the cities in which they play and 83% of our players are in north america. but you're right, 17% of our players are coming from outside north america. they are goinglfsolate, have to and make sure they are symptom- call it, to do that and get everybody back together as a community. but once we go into training camp mode, there will be lots of testing. not quite as much as when we're actually playing in phase four but we're going to be monitoring everything very closely because we know we've got to bring back a large group of people from all over and we have to make sure as we're bringing them together, we're not bringing covid-19 with them. >> nhl commissioner gary bettman. gary, i think you're going to pick up a lot of hockey fans over the next few months thank you, sir good luck to you. >> thank you great to be with you
8:02 am
be well. >> hoda. >> all right coming up next, looky looky who is here. tim mcgraw in the house. how he's helping the national community and a powerful message behind his new song. it's a powerful video but first this is "today" on nbc there are times when our need to connect really matters. to keep customers and employees in the know. to keep business moving. comcast business is prepared for times like these. powered by the nation's largest gig-speed network. to help give you the speed, reliability, and security you need. tools to manage your business from any device, anywhere. and a team of experts - here for you 24/7. we've always believed in the power of working together. that's why, when every connection counts... you can count on us.

>> oh, my god. tim, nothing against you, i just wanto watch the whole video right now. >> my word, i was going to say the timing of this song, i know it's around mother's day but given the fact so many people haven't been able to hug their moms in so long, this video is right on target tell us how it came to be. >> the song, i was recording the song back earlier in the year way before all this happened it was just a great song, a song i loved. i love my mom, like everybody loves their mom. i really wanted to record it after i recorded it and we got it mixed, then, you know, the virus came along and everybody was talking about it andn biggeg and deeper meaning to us that's why we released it. it just happened to be around mother's day but the main reason was because it just felt like, you know, like what i've been doing an everybody has been doing,
8:06 am
sitting around at home and having comfort food all the time this song felt like comfort food for your soul in a lot of ways. >> speaking of moms, how is yours? how is betty i remember i interviewed you when we were talking about your book i was so struck by how she was when you were just a little boy, what she was like as a mom tell us. >> you're going to make me cry again, aren't you? my mom is awesome. they are down in florida and they are self-isolated, just to make sure they are safe. i talk to her quite a bit. she's pretty happy about this video. she sent me a message the other day and asked if this means she's a movie star now then last night i talked to her and she wants a star on the walk of fame now because of the video. but she's doing great. my mom was such an inspiration to us growing up she went through a lot certainly having me out of wedlock early in her life and cutting her high school short
8:07 am
because of me. she's always been there. she's always been the person to tell us to think bigger than our circumstances and chase your dream. without her saying that to us growing up, instilling that in us growing up, i'm certainly sure i wouldn't have pursued the career that i have. >> what you've done with this video is you've connected with your mom, and with all of our moms, your fans sent in pictures and video and helped make this beautiful -- >> we had tons of people send stuff in we couldn't get everybody in, of course, but we tried to at least make it as you can feel as much as you can even though your mother may not have gotten in. >> i think it's cool i know you had to cancel your concert. i was thinking about connection. you at home with your girls, all of them, wife and kids you have two graduates in your family who didn't get to go to graduation maggie who graduated college and aubrey graduated high school is that right? >> that's right. we had a drive-through graduation for aubrey, where we drove through campus, which was really cool.
8:08 am
gracie out in los angeles my oldest daughter. maggie didn't have a graduation as well. we were together a little bit. we haven't all been together during this time but some of us have been togetheralthe kids who didn't have graduation but we tried to make it as fun for them as we could. >> you did you gave a great speech on iheartradio, so i encourage people to go to it and i encourage you to download the song i wish you wouldn't do this. i've got this right here for your songs whenever they come out. we love you. thank you, tim, for joining us. >> thank you good to see you. >> tim is going to come back and hang with me and jenna in just a little bit carson. >> i love seeing tim there that is awesome. guys, we're going to get to "pop start. i don't have a teleprompter today, so a good thing i printed
