what needs to be done to slow the spread. and the heat wave continues across the bay area. a live look at current temperatures and when we can see a change. we could see some rain. good morning to you all. thank you for starting your morning with us. i am marcus washington. >> i am laura garcia. it's thursday morning, friday eve. rain in the forecast? it has been so hot, kari. >> it has been so hot, and that will provide relief that we need from the high heat as we look at one last day of the dangerous heat. we will start out with low 60s this morning and then will see it reaching into the upper 80s and then eventually in the low 90s today. here's a look at the high temperatures, and we will reach up to 90 degrees in the south bay and we will see upper 90s in

the east bay, and then there will be cooling as the fog is rolling in as we speak. mike, you have been watching the roads. how is it looking for the commute? >> so far -- thank you for the not sizzling report. the only thing we have to note is the 101 alemany project on the southbound side of 101 will reportedly be closed until 5:00, and they usually pick that up a little early, and the northbound side has one lane open. we do have breaking news. more frustration and chaos overnight over the death of george floyd who died in the custody of minneapolis police. officers involved were fired but now people are calling for their arrest. and we are joined live by kris sanchez with a look at what happened overnight. very active there.

>> not only minneapolis, but there were protests in los angeles where protesters blocked off highway 101. after two nights of protests there are talks that the minnesota governor may call in the national guard for extra help. and the streets in minneapolis were like a war zone, fires, looting and tear-gas. minneapolis police called in for help from neighboring agencies, and officers are investigating the death of a man that was found shot on a sidewalk and they are asking questions of one person they have in custody. speaking overnight, the police spokesman said last night was definitely an escalating. >> tonight was a different night of protesting than it was the night before. the night before we started out with a body of 1,000 protesters at 38th and chicago, and they

were great, and they were chanting for things to remain peaceful and tonight didn't have that same feel. >> 46-year-old george floyd died after he was down to the ground by an officer who had a knee on his neck for about eight minutes. floyd was heard saying i can't breathe, which is the battle cry of people calling for justice in his death. and officers were responding to reports of fraud, which is not a violent crime. the four officers involved in george floyd's arrests and death have been fired however they have not been arrested and this is what is leading to the escalating of people who are protesting and calling for justice. we will continue to follow that

for you this morning and we expect more protests today. >> thank you. new overnight, firefighters are at the scene of a mobile home fire in the south bay, and this started a little before midnight on windmill street in morgan hill. you can see for a time firefighters battle intense flames. so far fire and police are not saying anything about who was inside or how many people made it out safely. also, there's no word of a cause of the fire. we do plan to stay there all morning with our crew there right now, and as soon as we get updates we will pass those along to you. let's take a look at the latest virus numbers op cross the bay area. there are now over 13,000 cases and 434 deaths. alameda county has 63 new cases. san mateo county reporting 59 new cases, and santa clara county, 15 new cases. covid-19 cases are surging in alameda county and surpassed

santa claire kw santa clara county as the bay area hot spot. oakland and hayward are reporting the most infections, and an oakland pastor still recovering from covid-19 says people need to take the virus more seriously. >> it's horrible. it's horrible. that's why i don't understand why people are not listening to those professionals. >> alameda county's health officer agrees with people saying it's still a good idea to continue sheltering at home if you can. currently there are more than 100,000 infections statewide. as that oakland pastor continues to recover alameda health leaders will host a hall begins at 9:00 this morning and details are posted on nbc b

nbcbayarea.com. and then among some of the changes with bart is eliminating 19 new bart police officers, and it calls for 100 new officers over five years, and bart is dealing with a 90% drop in revenue. its trains are clean right now and the agency is rolling out a new campaign to let riders know they are going the extra mile to keep riders safe. and the new procedures include deep cleaning and sanitizing all cars and stations, and putting more space between seats. and then the eviction moratorium approved this week will reportedly give tenants up to a year to pay back missed rent. berkeley reports council members extended the moratorium through the duration of the grace

period. a new study is revealing just how dire the situation is for renters and homeowners across the bay area. according to a study from the list published in palo alto online, and 79% said they could not pay their rent if they lost their job. 4% said they were not able to make a payment last month. and then high school students this year that graduate will not walk across the stage and have the big ceremonies, but bob redell joins us live this morning on how one community is rallying around those seniors. a nice gesture,yeah, they are t soften the blow.

we're talking about gilroy, and they want to soften the blow on the graduates of 2020 who will miss out on the graduation, and so parents and friends create a post of the senior, and it's like a brag book of the accomplishments, and somebody from the community adopts that and surprises the seniors with gift baskets, and teresa launched this program, but sadly her daughter passed away in 2014 from cystic fibrosis. >> it would be a nice surprise for us seeing my daughter in a cap and gown, and i appreciate it and i am glad they did that, because now i get to see her in a cap and gown. it didn't start out and i didn't want to make it about us, my

today. it closed above the 25,000 mark for the first time since early march on continued optimism over the gradual reopening of the economy. however, in focus today, information on how many filed for unemployment benefits last week. auto news, honda will recall 1.4 million vehicles around the world, and it includes 160,000 vehicles in the u.s. and toyota had a similar recall earlier this year. with millions of people out of work, here are some of the most in demand temp jobs right now. these are positions companies are looking to fill over the next month. warehouse workers top the list, and that includes forklift operators and packers and that

good thursday morning to you. dark and early as we start the day. a live look out over walnut creek. good morning, east bay. thanks for joining us here on "today in the bay." kari, i can tell you walking out the door this morning it was a little cooler than it has been in the past few days, and not saying it's going to be a cooler day but it certainly was cooler this morning. >> yeah, and some of us will have a cooler day. we are really going to feel that along the coast today, and we are starting out with fog and even drizzle, and in the north bay i was looking at fog in santa rosa, but we have the heat

as we get started once again advisory in effect for the this morning, a slight cooldownn inland valleys today and it starts at 11:00 this morning and continues until 7:00 this solano county. as we look at our temperature trend, we are in the upper 50s around sunrise, and then as we go into the rest of the day we will still see our temperatures heading up, but we just have to make it through today and we are going to have a much better forecast for the bay area. as we look at our high temperatures for this afternoon, notice the wide range in temperatures from the coastal areas to the inland valleys, and we are only up to 64 degrees in half moon bay today as the fog lingers. san francisco will reach 70 degrees, and you will feel that cooling there, and then inland, it goes all the way up to 98 degrees in antioch. and as we go into the rest of the forecast, this dangerous heat moves away and we will see the storm system coming in for the weekend that will bring in a

slight chance of scattered showers and lightning, and so as we look at how much rain that storm system could bring over the weekend, for most of us it will not be a lot, maybe a few trace amounts or few 0.01 of an inch, and we will try to get more water on the hills so late in the season. we're looking at a big cooldown over the next few days and we are going from the 90s today to the 80s tomorrow and then the weekend will see some 70s for the inland valleys and some of the warmest spots. next week we just warm it up a few more degrees. i will keep an eye on that with another update coming up. mike, you have been watching the roads. what is the update for the south bay? >> we have the slowing that is sticking around but i think it's what we usually see -- well, the descriptions from crown prince. overall, you see the green sensors dominating all over the

place, and at just about 4:15, we see slowing. that has been the case for basically the last week on the southbound side. you will lose two lanes potentially until 1:00 this afternoon, and know there may be slowing as you head through that area. and a live look shows you the golden gate bridge as well and we have a fog advisory given by chp, and this is an issue if roads are hitting the roads after a couple of months, laura, this will be new for them. >> thank you so much, mike. new overnight, this is in the north bay, a deadly shooting happened at about 9:00 last night in the redwood credit union parking lot. the victim was a man in his late 20s or early 30s found with a gunshot wound to his upper chest. authorities are not saying who he is until they can notify his

family. faith and immigrant rights leaders will gather today in san francisco for a 74-year-old man they say died from the coronavirus at an i.c.e. detention center. the man died 11 days ago in bakersfield, and it was a facility contracting out to i.c.e. he was recently transferred from state prison and suffered from various health issues, and i.c.e. initially ruled his death a suicide but it is being investigated. newsom wants to take $14 billion in immediate cuts, and in his plan $8 billion will be cut from schools. the senate democrats came up with their own proposal which would cut $13 billion if the federal government doesn't want to provide aid. happening today, pg&e's
