[ alarm sounds ] right now at 4:30, breaking news -- looters breaking into an east bay walmart overnight and setting the store on fire. damage spilling from the inside to the outside of the store. also happening in the east bay, more looting at shops in san leandro and oakland as unrest spreads across the bay area and america. a live report on all the overnight developments moments away. and a good morning to you. thanks for joining us on this monday morning. i'm marcus washington. and i'm kris sanchez in for

laura garcia. before we get to all of that breaking news that so many of us were feeling overnight, we want to take a look at the forecast because things are going to start heating up again, kari. yes, it will start to heat up today. we're looking at a slight warm-up for today, but a much bigger warm-up as we go into tomorrow, as we start out with a live look outside in san jose and checking out our temperature trend in the mid-50s but then seeing the temperatures trending into the low 70s by noon. and once again a fairly mild day. but just a little bit warmer than it was yesterday. we're still going to keep those clouds as our high temperature through the inland valleys reach up to 84, but along the coast we're staying in the 60s. we'll talk about temperatures in the mid to upper 90s in the forecast. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike, you've been monitoring the morning commute. what's going on this morning? kari, we have a car fire reported in oakland. i'll show you folks the green sensors all around the bay. as far as the speed sensors go,

which is great as you expect right now, over to eastbound 580 just past highway 24 getting away from the bay bridge, reports of one car fire there. the incident should be light and so should traffic because many of the city curfews we're talking about last until 5:00 a.m., but we will continue to follow, of course, any of the outstanding reports. back to you. thank you, mike. 4:32 now. breaking overnight the bay area unrest and the chaos went on despite curfews in effect in many bay area cities. in the late night hours protesters remained out in force and the looting continues. numerous bay area cities do have curfews in effect until at least 5:00 this morning. you can see those cities on the map -- san francisco, san jose,. also because of those protests the state offices in downtown san francisco and san jose are shut down today as well.

the santa clara county superior court also closed. this morning mayor london breed in san francisco is expected to address the city and again react to that looting. that is coming up at 10:00 this morning and nbc bay area will stream it live. three people detained for allegedly shooting at oakland police administration. this is that building on 7th street. no one was injured and police actually tweeted out this photo about 1:00 a.m. in some cases bay area law enforcement is stopping to show its support during protests, even in the line of duty. >> take a look at the scene here tweeted out last night by the city of oakland. someone there, youhen taking a knee with those protesters, some of whom could be heard applauding. our regular viewer, mark rodriguez in brentwood, sent us this shot, the chief of police in brentwood, kneeling in solidarity with the protesters

there as well. and the image is getting a lot of traction this morning. santa cruz police chief andrew mills is kneeling with protesters on pacific avenue yesterday in tribute to george floyd. the chief says his death disturbs him to his core. happening today a demonstration at san francisco city hall. that's supposed to include oscar winner jamie foxx. he will join interfaith leaders for a nekneel-in protest. that event starts at 11:00 a.m. a new video this morning of an overnight fire in southern california this morning. it happened at a men's clothing store in long beach shortly after looters were reported in that very same area. by the time firefighters arrived, the fire was too intense to even enter the building and firefighters had to watch it from the outside, take a defensive position, they call it. so far no word on the cause of

that fire. despite a citywide curfew protests in los angeles again escalated into violence and chaos. even before nightfall, police responded to numerous reports of looting there. firefighters had to battle several large flames as well. one protesters talked about the importance of not losing the message behind the chaos. >> it matters and when i think of ten years in the future when i have kids and i can tell them i stood up for something that matters, this is what i'll think about. >> the citywide curfew is being. l.a. county has declared a state of emergency. looters causing a lot of damage. bob redell is with us in san leandro. at one point that walmart was up in flames.

>> reporter: yeah, that fire is out. we'll show you the walmart in a second. i spoke with a san leandro police officer, and he tells me the looters were everywhere that they were chasing their tails trying to keep up. the looting has, unfortunately, been widespread throughout san leandro and the east bay. sheriff's offices says looters targeted the marina shopping center, the mall in hayward, union landing, shops in the fruitvale district of oakland, alameda, berkeley, castro valley, downtown san leandro. you're looking at the destruction at the west gate shopping center. you can see they broke into several stores including a home depot and walmart. this is actually a burlington store we're looking witnesses with stolen were caravanning in merchandise and then driving off to the next location. as far as that walmart is concerned that's right over here behind me. as i mentioned the fire is out but this is what it looked like.

the fire department says they were called out to the store twice overnight. looters set small fires inside. the building is damaged but it is saved. it's not going to be torn down or anything like that. all the merchandise inside is a loss due to smoke and water damage. it appears people were stealing anything -- clothes, tvs, diapers, even child safety seats for cars. this is video from down south in hayward. several people looted the tactical gun shop. according to the owner of the building, not the shop, two vehicles. eight people broke in and stole guns. not sure how many. police and the gun shop owner are reviewing the inventory. back out here live this is the looted overnight. these are employees that were cleaning up here. foe and steal

good monday morning. right now as we come up on 4:42 let's head outside to walnut creek as we check out our temperature trend today. it's just going to be slightly warmer, but we'll see the clouds linger and every now and then the sun peeking out from behind the clouds. by tomorrow temperatures start to ramp up. so we'll talk more about that and the microclimate forecast coming up in a few minutes. and, kari, we're going to go out to 580 in dublin where we're looking at traffic coming toward us westbound. going away from us looking for any disabled rig on the off ramp, one of the exit signs past the blue and white one thatay lowe's. no problem for the flow but we'll make sure that's the case. something going on in the south bay coming up. good morning. i'm rahel solomon at cnbc

headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wal strehier. stocks rallied into the close friday as president china and t crackdown on hong kong's independence is being viewed as less confrontational as expected. data on china's factory activity is also adding to the market positivity this morning. markets coming off their best week since early april and second straight positive month. meat packing plants have reopened, but prices are expected to remain high at least through the time being. consumers are paying more for ground beef as meat production is still affected by covid-19 and grocery distributors struggle to fill orders. supermarkets say panic buying has tailed off and many stores reduced limits on purchases but restaurants resumed buying food as they reopen and that's keeping supplies tight. at the retail level beef prices are up 22% and pork prices 18% from a year ago. and quarantine extreme, a

new report from creditcards.com a streaming service was added during the height of the virus lockdown. more than half say they streamed more in march, april and may. people admit to sharing their account with someone they don't live with. overin out with temperatures around the bay area in the upper 50s and low 60s. and it's going to reach in some spots into the mid-80s. that's nothing compared to what we're going to see by the middle of the week. i'll talk more about that come up in a few minutes. i was hoping the temperatures would hang on. right now we're hanging on to the fact traffic is relatively light. some curfews still in effect. that and your commute. we'll see what pattern is building this morning.

cool the rest of the week. here is our live look outside in san francisco as we get started on this monday morning. we're just seeing a few clouds in the distance as we check out concord and our temperature trend for today. expected to be mostly in the upper 50s as we get started this morning. a lot of people heading out the door heading to work. a mix of sun and clouds as temperatures reach into the low 70s early in the afternoon. eventually reaching into the low 80s today. in concord we'll see a high of 83 degrees. 82 in livermore. san jose up to 80 degrees. napa today will reach 81. you can see the seven-day forecast already up at the bottom of the screen. our temperatures are going to get really hot over the next few days. as the heat builds, it really starts to peak as we head to wednesday. thursday we're starting to come back down, and if you can believe a chance of showers again this weekend. it was nice to get that rain in my garden over the weekend. there may be north bay communities that could see some rain as we head to sunday. a lot of changes ahead here.

let's get we're in the low 80s today, low 90s tomorrow, and then some mid-90s as we head to wednesday, as we go to the end of the week into the weekend it cools down. once again more clouds, gusty winds, and that chance of the showers in the north bay happening on sunday. a lot to watch out here. as we head over to mike, you've been watching the commute. how is it looking for us this morning? not quite as dynamic as your temperatures for the week. that's a pretty good stretch of temperatures there. we're looking at the roadways where it's mostly green and what we would expect right now. the traffic flow, many curfews, many cities remain in effect until 5:00. we shouldn't see anybody who is not supposed to be out there who is not an emergency worker out there. looking at westbound 580 out of the altamont pass slowing. that's a pattern we've come to expect. we're in the fifth week of the

slowing. for today they are bringing the express lanes back into service as far as paying for them, 680, for example, through walnut creek and 237. i'm watching a report of a fire near downtown san jose. northbound 280. around 11th, no lanes blocked and it sounds like everything should be under control but i'm going to track that with no slowing on our sensors. a live look shows you the bay bridge toll plaza is very calm, very clear. last week the first two work days, tuesday and wednesday, we did have those metering lights on. we may have it starting this week on monday we'll see if the pattern sticks in. back to you. >> thanks, mike. turning back to our breaking news for you this morning, another night of tension and unrest across the u.s. this is after the death of george floyd in police custody. many protests turned destructive with acts of violence including some at the flash point from resistance in minneapolis where we find "today in the bay's" jay gray who has the latest. >> reporter: overnight waves of

frustration and at times fury. across the country tense confrontation between protesters and police at times escalating out of control. this crowd in boston burning a patrol car and at one point tossing a tear gas canister back at police n. new york a line of officers slowly walking back hundreds of protesters. in washington flames raging in a park just across from the white house. looters breaking into a row of shops in los angeles. and in birmingham, alabama, a crowd turns its anger to a confederate monument. in minneapolis, the city that's been the flash point for the outrage in violence since george floyd's death, an overwhelming show of force. dozens of protesters refusing to empty the streets at curfew are arrested. the national guard locking down what, for the first time in a week, are mostly quiet streets here. though earlier this tanker

barrels into a crowd of thousands, many jumping onto and some into the cab. somehow no one was injured. the driver arrested. >> i think the incident just underscores still the volatile situation we have out there. >> reporter: a situation that has millions on edge right now. protesters insist they'll continue their peaceful demonstrations here while police, sheriff's deputies and the national guard say they will make sure it stays that way. jay gray, nbc news, minneapolis. 4:52 right now. a large donation made by the san francisco 49ers owner debartolo is raising eyebrows, relating to george floyd's death, but it's causing unrest among some former 49ers teammates at this point. citing discrimination announced the 49ers would donate $1

million to local and national groups creating change. that gesture sparked a heated social media exchange between eric reid and torrey smith. reid, you might remember, joined colin kaepernick in kneeling during the national anthem which led to so much controversy. the niners chose not to re-sign him and kaepernick never played again. coming up on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> reporter: the scammers are going to try to fool you under the guise of contact tracing and covid-19. i'm chris chmura. we'll show you how to spot their tricks next. but first, happening now tropical storm amanda killed at least seven people in el salvador as heavy rains flooded city streets and triggered mud slides. an 8-year-old boy died when his home started to collapse. 10 to 15 inches of rain fell across el salvador, southern guatemala and western honduras. it's expected to wke its center moves further inland.

we're hearing a lot about contact tracing and health officials and even the governor says it is vital to containing the coronavirus. >> but scammers are lining up to take advantage. right now to consumer investigator chris chmura with a warning from the federal trade commission. >> reporter: good morning. california public health wants to connect the dots. if this person tests positive, the state wants to alert all of the people this person contacted and offer them testing. public health launched these public service announcements. >> if you've been exposed to covid-19, here is what you can

expect. you'll receive a call from a public health worker who will help you understand your infection risk. >> reporter: that call is where the federal trade commission expects to see scammers. th'l as contact tracers trying to scamp. so how do you know if a call, text, or email is legitimate? first, here is what you need to know. the contact tracing program is being run by a new state program called california connected. california connected says callers will only share health information about possible exposure. they will not ask for any of your personal information like your social security number or bank information and also are not going to charge you anything. if a contact tracing caller starts asking for money, hang up and report them to county public health. the state says it might send a text message or email, a real one will tell you to expect a call from california connected. a phony message might include a nk for you to tap on. never open a in an unknown text or email message. it could expose you to hackers.
